Abstract:
LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract in English only.Sit-up is a popular exercise for both athletes and health fitness participants. It is almost universally accepted as an effective training method of abdominal strength and endurance. The 1-minute timed sit-up (modified sit-up) test, modified from the straight-legged sit-up with hands locked behind the head, is widely used in the health fitness testing such as Physical Best of AAHPERD, National Children and Youth Fitness Study (NCYFS & NCYFS II) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and Survey of Health Related Fitness & Lifestyle of Working Population Aged 20-39 in Hong Kong conducted by Hong Kong Physical Fitness Association etc. Although the modified sit-up was assumed to be a safer test than the straight-legged sit-up, researchers are still not satisfied with it. Are there any problems with sit-up test? Is the curl-up test developed by Robertson and Magnusdottir (1987) safer and more valid and reliable than the modified sit-up test? All such queries are being discussed in this article.

Abstract:
This study compared the visuomotor development of young children in Hong Kong and the USA assessed on the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Bender-Gestalt test. 744 children aged 4:6 to 8:5 years from 6 kindergartens and 6 primary schools in Hong Kong were administered the Modified Bender-Gestalt test. The Qualitative Scoring System was used to measure the children's visuomotor development. Their visuomotor scores were then compared with norms for children in the USA. Analysis indicated significant differences across all age groups of 4:6 to 8:5 years in 6-mo. units. Consistent with previous research, children in Hong Kong outperformed their western peers. Percentile scores and T scores for children in Hong Kong in each age group were reported.

Abstract:
After the change of sovereignty in Hong Kong from Britain to China on July 1st, 1997, the status of Putonghua (the language of the new Chinese ruler) has been formally recognized in addition to Cantonese (the vernacular language) and English (the international and ex-colonizer’s language). Four years after the political handover, a Matched-guise test was conducted on a total of 1048 local Hong Kong Secondary 4 students. The aim of this study was to ascertain the respondents’ subjective reactions towards the three languages when the city was undergoing significant political and socio-economic changes. The results showed that the Cantonese guise was rated the highest on traits of solidarity, the English guise the highest on traits of power, whereas the Putonghua guise was rated the lowest in both dimensions. Although the study started from a micro perspective investigating the attitudes of the respondents towards the three target languages and their speakers, the research results helped to reveal the vitality of the three target languages in post-colonial Hong Kong and suggest directions for language education.

Abstract:
Objective: To establish an olfactory test in the Hong Kong Chinese population. Study design: Prospective analysis of the results of a combined olfactory test (COT) for patients with olfactory dysfunction and for normal subjects attending a secondary and tertiary ear, nose and throat centre.Method: Our COT was based on and modified from the Connecticut Chemosensory Research Centre test. It consisted of an odour identification test involving nine substances and a threshold test using a series of threefold dilutions of 1-butanol. From September 1998 to June 2002, 188 Hong Kong Chinese patients with olfactory dysfunction and subjects with normal olfaction were prospectively recruited. The subjects were categorized into normal, hyposmic and anosmic groups. The olfactory function of the main group of subjects (n = 153) was assessed with the COT by a blinded observer and also quantified with a visual analogue scale; the results were analysed to validate the discriminative ability of the COT. Another subgroup of subjects (n = 35) was tested with the COT twice with a two-week interval to evaluate test–retest reliability. Results: There were 42 normal, 68 hyposmic and 43 anosmic subjects within the main group (total n = 153). The identification scores, threshold scores and combined olfactory scores were statistically significantly different between the anosmic, hyposmic and normal groups of subjects (p < 0.001). The combined olfactory score correlated with the visual analogue score and the correlation coefficient was 0.56 (p < 0.01). The mean time spent on each COT was 8.6 minutes (standard deviation = 3.4 minutes). The test–retest reliability of the COT was satisfactory, with a one-way model intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.87 (n = 35).Conclusion: The satisfactory discriminative ability and test–retest reliability of the COT have been demonstrated in this study. The COT is a feasible method for assessing sense of smell in the Hong Kong Chinese population.

Abstract:
Performance in an assessment is not the reflection of just one’s knowledge and skills;motivation also plays a part. When the stakes of the assessment are low, it is logical to assume that students will have lower motivation to perform well in it. The Diagnostic English Language Tracking Assessment (DELTA) diagnoses and tracks students’ English language progress during their years of study at three universities in Hong Kong. Although the DELTA is a low stakes assessment, students get a report with their DELTA measure and detailed feedback on their performance. This study provides insights into test motivation as well as how useful students find a diagnostic report is to their language learning by ways of questionnaire survey and group interview, so as to explore students’ perceptions of test stakes and test value. The survey includes the Student Opinion Scale by Sundre and Moore (2002),which measures students’ motivation during the test; and a feedback usefulness scale specifically designed for this study to measure students’ perceptions of the usefulness of the diagnostic report. The results show that both scales are valid instruments to be used in this context and students are not motivated whilst sitting the test although they find the DELTA report quite useful. Data from the students’ interviews provide further information as to students’ motivation before and after the DELTA. In general they are not motivated before the test and their motivation to work on their English after the test largely depends on their perceived usefulness of the DELTA report. Lastly, as L2 motivation is a dynamic entity which will not remain constant over time, the study also demonstrates how Dörnyei and Ottó’s (1998) process model of L2 motivation can be adapted in explaining students’ test preparation and test taking process in low stakes diagnostic tests.

Abstract:
The chapter discusses a digital scholarship project collaborated between the Department of Communication Studies and the University Library of Hong Kong Baptist University. The main objective of the project is to develop a publicly accessible website to showcase the various research methodologies used in 14 studies conducted by the first author as well as their findings. These 14 studies were carried out to analyze how materialism affected children and youth in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macao (Macau), and Singapore. The website shares original data sets, research instruments, interview transcripts, and drawings of interviewees. More importantly, research results are visualized in an interactive manner. It is hoped that the website could facilitate other researchers to develop models, test hypothesis, and conduct cross cultural analysis on materialism. The website is also designed to provide guidelines for educators and parents to counteract the undesirable effect of commercial communication to children and youth. This chapter discusses the research and the digital projects, marketing strategies of the website, and self-reflection of the first author.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is located at the mouth of Lingdingyang Bay. The east and west artificial islands are on both sides of the Lingdingyang Dahao Deep Channel. The waters of the artificial islands are deep and rapid, and the currents impact the artificial islands frontally, which is likely to cause major changes and adjustments in the underwater topography near the artificial islands, eventually forming a new pattern of the local beach evolution centred on the artificial islands. In the engineering design stage of the bridge, the Lingdingyang two-dimensional tidal current and sediment mathematical model was used to simulate the underwater topography near the artificial island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge based on the verification of the measured basic data. The simulated results show that the impact of the artificial island on the water and sand environment of the Lingdingyang waters is concentrated in the waters of 5 km upstream and downstream of the artificial island. The results of the erosion and deposition changes of the underwater topography before and after the construction of the artificial island from 2009 to 2019 show that the trend of the seabed erosion and deposition changes caused by the construction of the artificial island is basically consistent with the prediction results of the mathematical model, which provides good evidence for the applicability of the mathematical model.

Abstract:
Introduction: The present study attempts to capture the dynamic connection between the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and stock indices of select Asian emerging economies like China, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Thailand, along with the volatility in the select stock markets occurring out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: The study period begins on January 1, 2019 and continues up to April 6, 2022. The Bai-Perron test for the identification of structural breaks and the Wald test for the determination of short-run causality are used. Granger causality test measures the existence of uni-directional or bi-directional causality. To capture the volatility, Dummy-GARCH (1,1) along with EGARCH are used. Results: The results reveal the existence of causality over the short-run among the indices and COVID-19, as well as the existence of ARCH and GARCH effects in most of the stock indices, which may have occurred due to the external shock of the pandemic. Conclusion: The stock markets across the globe are experiencing depressed sentiment, which is replicated in the numerous crashes in the stock indices in all parts of the world.

Abstract:
In Hong Kong, the maximum test load is required to be maintained constant for 72 hours during loading tests of piles according to the loading test procedures in the Code of Practice for Foundations 2017. Such a long duration of maintained loading is uncommon in pile loading tests overseas. In the paper, the behaviour of driven H-piles under maintained loading will be studied using creep settlements measured during the 72 hours of maintained loading of piles from various sites in Hong Kong. The reason for such a long period of maintained loading is not discussed in the literature. The paper aims to address the more fundamental issues of (a) usefulness of maintained loading if any, (b) whether it is meaningful to conduct maintained loading at peak test load and (b) whether the period of maintained loading can be reduced the time needed for loading test.

Abstract:
An in-situ push-out test was carried out on a 3.4m diameter, 12m high trial suction caisson to determine the ultimate uplift capacity and, in particular, the shaft friction that could be generated along the walls of the caisson. The test was performed in the south-eastern waters of Hong Kong in ground conditions comprising soft clay with alluvial sand at the caisson tip. Numerical back-analysis of test reveal that considerable suction was generated at the caisson base due to a combination of the relatively high rate of loading adopted in the test and the silty nature of the alluvium. Inferred friction values generated on the outside wall of the caisson are found to be in line with existing data reported in the literature.

Abstract:
Hong Kong-Zhu hai-Macao Bridge, connecting world famous tri-cities in China, will consists of three different construction elements: a man made peninsula, a world’s longest and widest immersed tunnel and a cross-sea bridge. The key point of this megastructure is the construction of the immersed tube tunnel construction. The accuracy of tunnel element positioning directly determines the quality of tunnel construction. In order to study the behavior of elements during its lowering to the sea bed, the scaled model test has carried out in the Key Laboratory of High-speed Ship Engineering of Ministry of Education, Wuhan, China. Experiment was carried out to investigate the motion responses of the tunnel element in the immersion under wave and current actions and the tensions acting on the controlling cables of its immersing system. A concise description of the model wave-current test is carried out, and the variation of motion responses of the tunnel element and cable tensions against wave, current and immersing depth were obtained, which could be a guidance to the construction of the immersed tunnel of Hong Kong-Zhu hai-Macao Bridge.
