Full textVacuum cleaners today are mainly designed to be attractive at the moment of purchase. The result is often devices with high power consumption and poor efficiency that are difficult to store in the typical cleaning cabinet. The aim of this project was to investigate the possibility of developing a vacuum cleaner that simplifies both use and storage and which also has an attractive design without compromising on its functionality or performance. In order to meet the targets, the project was initiated with a preliminary study in which the market's supply and users' needs were examined. The market research found that the vacuum cleaners that today claim to be super-functional visually expressed their functionality and performance in an exaggerated way. This often made them look like radio-controlled cars and appear to be misplaced in a natural home environment. During the user study, a survey demonstraded that the biggest problems users normally expericence are awkward use and problematic storage. A vision was created of a vacuum cleaner that is easily stored, easy to use and in a natural way fit into a home environment. The result was the vacuum cleaner Kompakt. The concept allows for smarter placement of internal components and reduction of unnecessary space within the vacuum cleaner body compared to a traditional vacuum cleaner. This results in a much smaller vacuum cleaner that is easy to store. Also included is an expandable hose, telescopic shaft, integrated dust container, extra nozzles and spherical wheels that allow the vacuum cleaner to rotate 360 degrees around its axis. On the upper side of the shaft is a display that allows easy adjustment of the vacuum cleaner controls. In addition, color, material and design choices make Kompakt's design considerably better suited to a home environment than the typical super-functional vacuum cleaner.

Full textA theoretical study of possible production systems for future production of a side panel made ofcomposite material and belonging to an urban city car has been carried out. The study has takenplace within Team H2politO at the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy. Three different productionvolumes have been analyzed considering dimensional limits, economy, production rate, machinery,material and environment. These have been set to 1 000, 10 000 and 100 000 components/year.Previous studies within the field have been analyzed, combined and used as a basis in order to arriveat an appropriate choice of production methodology regarding the different production volumes. Acomparison with production methods for the side panel if it would have been manufactured withaluminum has been made and the profitability of composite production has been evaluated.Production‐ and material data have been collected from the software CES EduPack and revised basedon study visits and interviews. The side panel has thereafter been edited and dimensioned in termsof recommendations for optimization of a future production. Modeling has been made usingAutodesk Alias Design, Photoshop and Edraw Max. Furthermore, overview plan drawings ofproduction plants have been made.The study has given results in terms of recommendations and requirement specifications for futureprojects within the field. For continued studies about the profitability of composite production, anaccurate study about different composite materials including tests of material characteristics issuggested. A detailed plan of the production plant with exact dimensions and technical data foroptimization of production time is also recommended. In addition to this, it is essential to develop abetter assembly system between the side panel and the roof panel as well as investigate thepossibility of a more profitable production method for medium‐ to large scale production ofcomposite details.

Full textAim: To investigate and compare the effect of different LED curing devices by measuring degree of conversion, curing depth and micro-hardness of a universal nanocomposite, based on the questions:- Does the actual irradiance of the curing lamps match the one specified in the product data sheets?- Can the curing process be done more efficiently by light curing with a higher irradiance and a shorter curing time?Materials & Methods: The material properties degree of conversion, curing depth and microhardness were measured for the Filtek Supreme XTE (3M ESPE) composite with different LEDs and after curing at different curing times (short, medium, long). The light curing units used in the study were L.E.Demetron II (Kerr), Mini LED (Satelec), D-Light Pro (GC), Epilar Deepcure-S (3M ESPE) and Flashmax P3 (CMS Dental). The spectral irradiance of the LEDs was obtained with a CCD spectrometer (Avantes Inc.) connected to an integral sphere (Gooch & Housego) with a fiber optic cable (Avantes Inc.). Data were analyzed with one- and two-way ANOVA test followed by Tukey test. Results: Short curing times and low irradiance results in lower values of the material properties compared to longer curing times and higher irradiance.Conclusion: The actual irradiance of the curing lamps is consistent with that stated in the product data sheets. Sufficient polymerization was achieved with all curing lamps at all curing times. The curing process can be made more efficient and/or be improved by adding more energy in less time. Extending the curing time has a positive effect on the material properties – an increased degree of conversion, depth of cure and micro-hardness.

Full textWhen a sailing yacht runs aground, it often sustains severe structural damage to the keel and the ship hull, and, as a consequence, expensive repairs. During the last few years the resulting costs of these incidents have increased; consequently it brings the keel attachment design to the fore. Conventional keels are mounted to the ship with the use of long keel bolts stretching from the keel bulb up through the hull laminate. These conventional solutions are in no way designed to withstand the forces acting on the keel attachment during severe grounding. Svea Teknik AB has developed and patented a new type of keel attachment that gives rise to elastic deformation in case of grounding, as well as good sailing performance. Compared to conventional keel attachments, this solution allows the boat to retard for a longer distance, thus effectively reducing the retardation. It also absorbs the kinetic energy in a better way, which reduces the damage to the boat and keel attachment. One of the key aspects associated to this product is that several insurance companies are prepared to offer the boat owner a reduced price for their boat insurance if the boat is equipped with a keel protective device. The construction is manufactured in steel and has been implemented in three copies of the sailing yacht Aspect 40. Svea Teknik now wishes to modify the design to be suitable for composite materials. This master thesis includes a pilot study of this particular keel attachment with the objective to replace the steel with a suitable fiber reinforced polymer. The focus is directed to the plate (also called membrane) to which the keel attaches, and is where the elastic deformation takes place. In this pilot study, the analysis is mainly focused on the strength and deformations that the membrane is subjected to, for different types of geometries, composite materials and composite fiber directions. SolidWorks Simulation integrated composite module is used in the analysis. The loads (primarly grounding-force and side-force) are calculated using the upcoming ISO 12215-9-standard, applied for small boats. The calculations are based on the data coupled to the sailing yacht Najad 355, which corresponds to loads approximately 50 % higher than for the Aspect 40. The simulation results show that it is difficult to achieve sufficient strength (with no permanent damage) and appropriate deformations, using geometries similar to the existing one. This is mainly due to the fact that the center part of the membrane is fixed to the boat hull and therefore limits the deformations and also increases the stresses within the membrane. Subsequent work resulted in a number of new concepts where this problem is reduced or eliminated. The most appropriate fiber direction with given loads is ±45˚ and the composite material should have high fracture strength in the orthogonal fiber direction.
