Abstract:
The article discusses the influence of N. Leskov’s works on S. Durylin’s writings. It proves that Durylin’s literary critique on Leskov focuses on the idea of search of the god and ideal, the idea pervading Leskov’s literary heritage. Durylin was one of the first to recognize the ex- amples of worldly holiness in Leskov’s narratives. He creates characters of saints living in the world in each of his own writings as well. Durylin interprets Leskov’s image of Russia as the mythologem (author’s interpretation of the sociocultural myth) of Holy Rus’. In light of this mythologem, Durylin’s Russia is the Imperial Russia, which is, like the city of Kitezh, idealized and irretrievably lost. Leskov also affected his poetics: he dedicated his Troitsyn Den’ (The Whit Sunday) to Leskov, wrote his own novels in the unique genres created by Leskov (e.g., a novel-chronicle: Soboriane (The Cathedral Clergy / The Cathedral Folk) – Kolokola (The Bells)). Durylin repeated the storylines of several Leskov’s short novels, used some of Leskov’s narrative strategies. This research shows various similarities of Durylin’s and Leskov’s works. The conclusion is that Leskov’s character and esthetics were reviewed Durylin’s works.

Abstract:

Kaminski, Jason. "Kolokol : spectres of the Russian bell." University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/421.

Full text
Abstract:
Kolokol: Spectres of the Russian Bell, submitted by Jason Kaminski in fulfilment of the requirements of PhD (Humanities and Social Sciences) candidature at the University of Technology, Sydney, is an interpretative history of Russian bells (kolokola) and bell music (zvon). As a cultural object and sign, the Russian bell is associated with ideas of transcendence, and ideological and creative ‘vision.’ This interpretation of the signification of the kolokol as a sign arises directly from the perception that the bell is essentially a physical (anthropomorphic) body that is capable of ‘projecting’ or ‘transcending’ itself in the form of a spectrum. This essential ‘spectrality’ defines a history of the Russian bell as an instrument of magical, spiritual and religious ritual, as a cultural artefact associated with changing ideological movements (paganism, Christianity and communism) and as a sign represented synaesthetically in image, sound and text. Ethnographic and campanological studies observe that the kolokol ‘reflects Russian social history like a mirror’, representing the ‘voice of God’ or Logos as an aural or ‘singing’ icon, pointing to the primordial origins of language. This dissertation further investigates the idea that the kolokol acts as an ‘acoustical mirror’ and ‘ideological apparatus’: a medium or spectre through which Russian history and culture is interpellated and reflected. The various logical streams (storytelling, legend, script, text, song, cultural theory, philosophy and ethnography) that contribute to this dissertation form a textual ‘polyphony’ through which the essential meanings and ‘personae’ of the kolokol as a cultural object are interpreted. The bell is regarded as presenting an enigma of signification that must be resolved through investigation and definition. The thesis concludes that the kolokol acts as an iconic sign of the creative ‘Word’ (Logos) and as a symbolic sign that implies a ‘bridge’, copula or psychic ‘hook’, articulating the relationship between the cosmos and consciousness, the material and spiritual, the real and imaginary. Keywords: Russia, Russian History, Russian Arts, Russian Music, Russian Poetry, Russian Political History, Russian Orthodoxy, Russian Revolution, Bell-founding, Bell Music, Bell-ringing, Campanology, Iconology, Kolokol, Zvon. Kolokoto, Mamotsekua Gladys. "The role of school management in promoting healthy learning environments for Grade R learners / Mamotsekua Gladys Kolokoto." Thesis, North West University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13150.

Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of school management in promoting healthy school environments for Grade R learners in the Sedibeng West District. A literature review revealed that there are two types of health programmes: those that support the curriculum and those that are part of the curriculum. School managers have to focus on both in their efforts to promote health in schools. South African schools adapted a Whole School Approach in creating and sustaining healthy environments. Whole School Approach includes the development of health policies, health education, community, learner, teacher involvement, nutrition and prevention of communicable diseases. A qualitative research approach was used and data was generated by means of interviews, documents, photographs and narratives. Four research sites were purposefully selected and four principals, three Heads of Departments for Foundation Phase, four health coordinators and four Grade R practitioners participated in this research. Only one of the research sites had a School Based Health Centre. The study revealed that curriculum-based health programmes including physical education, physical activities and health education were effectively implemented although they were not effectively monitored and evaluated. Health programmes supporting the curriculum include nutrition, first aid and health services. Both health services and nutrition were effectively implemented and monitored whilst there were serious problems with first aid. Practitioners were not trained for first aid, in the three schools where first aid kits were available were not checked therefore not replenished. In one school there was no first aid kit, thus, there was not much focus on precautionary measures in the participating school. There was therefore, no strategies in place for the management of health programmes that support the curriculum.

Koloko, Mampai Rosie. "The role of the school management team in implementing the development appraisal system / Mampai Rosie Koloko." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2879.

Full text
Abstract:
The research deals with the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) which was introduced in 1998 to address the professional development of teachers in the Republic of South Africa. This process was influenced inter-alia by the following challenges which seem to be faced by teachers, namely: development of teachers' professionalism, personal growth, and promotion of teachers. The purpose of this research was to determine the role of the school management team (SMT) to implement the required Development Appraisal System (DAS) as part of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). The focus of this research was the professional development of teachers, which inevitably involves the role of the school management team (SMT) in implementing the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) in schools. The role of the School management team was subsequently studied in relation to the implementation of the DAS policy with a focus on the composition of the SMT, the roles, responsibilities and core duties of the different members of the SMT. The collected information from the literature review formed a basis for the development of a management plan as part of a theoretical framework for the school management team to effectively implement the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) in the school. The research made use of a qualitative case study to determine the extent of the role of the school management teams to implement the Development Appraisal System policy in a primary school in the Lichtenburg APO. Data was collected through the use of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The target population of this research was the members of the school management team as well as purposefully selected teachers from a specific school. Findings include amongst other insufficient competence of school management members to implement the Development Appraisal System effectively. Guidelines were accordingly formulated for the improvement of the expertise of the school management team to implement the Developmental Appraisal System in the school that serves as the study population for the qualitative case study. The research concluded that if the Developmental Appraisal System is effectively implemented according to policy and by taking into account the needs of the teachers; it may be to the benefit of all stakeholders of the school community.

Kolokoto, John Bob. "An exploration of strategies used in the teaching of geometry in senior phase / John Bob Kolokoto." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/14407.

Full text
Abstract:
The unsatisfactory performance of learners m geometry specifically and mathematics in general, as revealed in SACMEQ and TIMMS reports, is an indication of the difficulties experienced by learner~ in dealing with geometry. In response to many years of learners' challenges with geometry, the South African curriculum must advocate reforms in teaching strategies applied by educators to teach geometry. The purpose of this study is to understand the challenges that educators face in the teaching of geometry in order to explore and recommend strategies of teaching geometry that will assist educators to improve learners' understanding of geometry in the senior phase. Grade six and nine mathematics results indicate that learners' performance in geometry is of poor standard. This study was conducted in Moses Kotane West Area Office of the Not1h West Province of South Africa. A total number of 35 mathematics educators in 27 middle schools participated in the study by filling in questionnaires. Data were also collected through observation and interview. The constructivism theory provided a theoretical framework for the study. Data collected were analysed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 17.0 (SPSS 17.0) programme and conclusions were drawn. The study revealed that educators still used trad itional methods of teaching in the era of Outcomes - Based Education (OBE) when teaching geometry to learners. Amongst others, teachers do not use the OBE principles such as learner-centred approach, teacher facilitation and integration of knowledge in assisting learners to understand geometry. For most of the participating schools, educators sti ll follow teaching by telling rather than engaging learners in their teach in g. Reasons advanced by teachers in sticking to using methods used before the introduction of OBE include lack of pedagogical content knowledge and learner-centred instructional methods. The teachers attribute the use of the traditional teaching methods to lack of proper training and also resistance to change. The study further revealed that the majority of educators' workshops are concentrated on algebra content knowledge and less on strategies that educators should use to teach geometry. Tn view of the findings in this study, some interactive teaching methods such as problem solving, visualisation and co-operative learning are recommended and could be used for further studies in order to achieve better application of teaching strategies for geometry in our schools.

Abstract:
Urban policies of the brownfields regeneration process constitute an actual topic and they are the subject of intense debate. These are often abandoned, possibly even contaminated and unused buildings, which must first be regenerated in order to be reused. The emergence of existing brownfields was the result of social and economic changes in the 1990s, which are associated with the gradual abandonment of buildings after former industrial activity. This paper deals specifically with the Svitava industrial zone located in the second largest city of the Czech Republic in the city of Brno. The goal of this paper is to present the Svitava industrial zone as a persistent barrier and at the same time a potential development area, moreover the aim is to analyze the brownfields located in this area. The analysis shows that in the area defined from the Brno-Maloměřice and Obřany district to the south along Masná street, there are thirty-one registered brownfields after the former predominantly industrial activity. These are neglected places, which represent barriers to further development but are also potential development areas that the private investors are interested of.

Abstract:
COVID-19 epidemic struck the world with exceptional speed, severity and breadth. Globalisation contributed to the rapid spread of this modern-day “plague” to all corners of the world. Economies have always been sensitive to certain types of shocks in the past. Today, thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, the concept of resilience is gaining prominence and the importance of the concept of resilience is growing, both in research and in economic policymaking. COVID-19 crisis shows how it has reduced the resilience of key systems to shocks and allowed failures to cascade from one system to others. A systems approach based on resilience must be proposed to prepare socio-economic systems for future shocks. The paper aims to shed a summary on the fundamental aspects of resilience in terms of theoretical concept, but especially pay attention to the current strategies oriented on resilience, with a specific focus on the European Union approach.

Abstract:
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism is a widely discussed topic nowadays. However, this article does not address the global impact of the pandemic. The focus is on government’s decisions, which to some extent may be the cause of the impact on tourism. The government is responsible for setting specific measures to prevent the spread of the disease and is also responsible for implementing tools in order to eliminate the effects of the crisis and stimulate an economic and social activity. The aim of this article is to present an evaluation of government’s measures from the perspective of tourism entrepreneurs. The research focuses on the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic, which hit the country in the spring of 2020. The respondents of the research were entrepreneurs in the catering and accommodation sector with their premises in Mikulov. Data were collected using electronic questionnaires. Their return rate was 27%. To complement the qualitative data of the research, an interview was conducted with a destination coordinator. The findings reveal that overall, entrepreneurs rated government’s measures as negative in the context of their business. Their economic result fell by more than 75% and they also recorded a significant loss of clientele. Entrepreneurs were very critical of the overall actions of the government, which according to them, created confusion. On the contrary, they assessed the government’s support positively.

Abstract:
Various spatial actors can reduce costs, raise efficiency of activities and contribute to the social development of the territory also through the own community. A community is a fellowship of citizens or other spatial actors who are united by a common interest in relation to a space in which they want to contribute to a certain socio-economic change. Community initiatives are, in essence, found mainly on the bottom-up principle, from the initiative of local actors who are interested in meeting their needs together with other individuals or entities. Similarly, in some cases also top-down institutions in local development utilize membership base, or partnership to achieve its goals. The aim of this paper is to shed a light on the importance of community development, to demonstrate the importance of active communities for the development of local society and economy through case studies of model examples of good practice. In this paper, we compare a selected community initiative in local development established according to law (top-down), and due the activity and enthusiasm of local people (bottom-up). The results hypothesize that bottom-up community initiatives may grow faster and provide wider benefits to the institution's activities, but are less stable and do not provide a strong basis for the long-term sustainability of community initiative funding.

Abstract:
The research focuses on studying climate change awareness and climate-friendly activities among different socioeconomic groups in the city of Košice, Slovakia. Public awareness is a key element when tackling complex issues demanding wide-ranging compliance across sectors and individuals. In order to assess the perceptions and activities related to the climate change, we analyze the data stemming from survey conducted during the last quarter of 2019. Applying latent class cluster analysis to the sample of 368 observations, we were able to identify four types of respondents. These groups differ in the degree of vulnerability to adverse conditions due to climate change. This study sheds light on how different groups of citizens perceive the threat of climate change impacts in their everyday lives and how they act in order to adapt. Such findings can be applied by policymakers at both national and local level when designing and communicating socially just measures reflecting the needs of all major types of citizens. The paper identifies four different groups of residents based on their perceptions of climate change and their activities to adapt. Each group needs to be considered separately when designing adaptation strategy in order not to exacerbate existing socioeconomic inequalities. The findings also point to the need to strengthen municipality's activities in the area of climate change education.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to verify the existence of a market failure in the parking market in the city of Brno with regard to the possibility of providing public support for the construction or operation of parking garages. The paper deals with only one of the signs of market failure, which is the demonstration of imperfect competition. The existence of imperfect competition is conditioned by the dominant position on the market (market share of at least 40%). The market is defined on the basis of walking distance as a key factor for the use of a parking space and on the basis of the categorization of individual types of parking spaces (especially with regard to street parking and parking in car parks and parking garages and P + R parking). The performed analysis did not confirm the existence of imperfect competition on the parking market in the central part of the city of Brno.

Abstract:
Tourism is an inter-ministerial sector, significantly affecting the employment and development of regions. The paper aims to determine the impact of the epidemiological situation caused by the COVID-19 on the development of tourism in the regions of Slovakia based on the use of quantitative methods. Extensive travel restrictions caused a record drop in accommodation visit rate in 2020. The number of foreign visitors decreased by two-thirds year-on-year to the level of 1998. The visit rate in the Slovak Republic was mainly by domestic visitors. Despite the pandemic, in the third quarter of 2020, they exceeded last year's record numbers from the summer season. After considering the visit rate of domestic and foreign visitors, the number of visitors decreased the least year-on-year in the Žilina Region. The most significant year-on-year decrease in visitors was recorded in the Bratislava Region, where business clients were significantly absent. Gross sales decreased by almost half compared to the previous year. The highest gross sales were achieved by accommodation establishments in the Žilina Region. The number of overnight stays decreased year-on-year in all regions. However, the length of stays was significantly extended in the fourth quarter of 2020, thanks to the visit rate in spa towns.
