Abstract:
Koh Phi Phi Don is among the most visited island tourism destinations in Thailand. Due to the island’s topography and development patterns, most accommodation suppliers on the island are likely to be exposed to a range of climate change impacts, particularly sea-level rise, which can pose a severe risk to the local tourism operations. This study aimed to explore perceptions of climate change adaptation actions in response to impacts typically associated with climate change. This study, furthermore, investigated possible obstacles, barriers, and incentives influencing decision-making processes of accommodation owner-managers (the private sector) to adapt to climate change. The investigation builds on 81 surveys and 12 in-depth interviews. The findings provide evidence that most of the sampled businesses already implemented (consciously or not) climate change adaptation measures, such as insurance coverage, water treatment appliances, and staff training on emergency responses. Through a concentration of power on the island, their action is hindered, which creates a barrier to a sustainable and climate risk-informed development pathway.

Abstract:
Constructed wetlands (cws) for wastewater treatment may be part of the answer to the urgent need for a change in the approach to wastewater treatment in developing countries. Although thailand has several cws, there have been no studies of their sustainability. To remedy this, the sustainability of three promising cws in very different settings was assessed. These were located at koh phi phi, a world-renowned international tourist and holiday resort; sakon nakhon, a northeastern provincial capital; and ban pru teaw, a small post-tsunami village on the andaman coast. Key stakeholder interviews, questionnaires and household interview surveys, together with existing data and on-site measurements of the key pollutant content of wastewater were used to evaluate the systems. Results show that major management and treatment problems have emerged in the projects at koh phi phi and ban pru teaw due to the lack of post-construction personnel development and maintenance; but on the other hand, sakon nakhon is the first cw in thailand to obtain iso 9001 certification. The results reveal the importance of the socio-cultural dimension of sustainability; public perception, awareness and knowledge, local expertise and clear roles for institutions could explain the differences in sustainability of the cws. The environmental benefits and the low operation and maintenance costs are also important for sustainability, by justifying the system and avoiding user payments.

Abstract:
Addition of adrenalin (10−4moll−1) to trout erythrocytes in an unbuffered saline resulted in a rapid acidification of the extracellular medium. This process was inhibited by amiloride (K½10−4moll−1) and by the removal of extracellular Na+. The rate of acidification was a saturable function of extracellular Na+ concentration. When extracellular pH was maintained constant by continual titration with KOH, adrenalin induced a transient burst of H+ efflux. During this period the loss of cellular H+ equivalents was approximately equal to the net gain of Na+, providing evidence for a Na+/H+ exchange with a stoichiometry of 1. The steady state following stimulation with adrenalin could be disturbed by changes in extracellular pH. After the addition of adrenalin, intracellular pH (pHi) was increased by 0.2-0.3 units but did not exceed extracellular pH, as required if the Na+ and H+ concentration ratios came into equilibrium. The increase in pHi in stimulated compared with control cells was maintained approximately constant over a wide range of pHo, suggesting that pH equilibration by the Jacob-Stewart cycle was operating normally and that the activation of Na+/H+ exchange provides an offset to the normal relationship between pHi and pHo. The steady state results from a balance of an increase Na+/H+ and CI−/HCO3− exchange with an increased rate of Na+ pumping and next KCl efflux. In a buffered saline, adrenalin caused a 22–46% increase in the oxygen-carrying capacity of trout erythrocytes. It is suggested that this was due to a Root effect of trout haemoglobin caused by cellular alkalinization when the Na+/H+ exchange mechanism was activiated. This observation suggests that many published values for oxygencarrying capacity of fish blood require re-evaluation.

Krabi Province is located on the Andaman Sea, about 814 kilometers from Bangkok along National Highway No. 4 head to the south, with an area of 4,708 square kilometers (https://th.wikipedia.org,2020). The area consists of upland mountains, plains, and more than 154 islands; it is rich in mangrove forests and there is a river of about 5 kilometers long, that flows through the city into the Andaman Sea. Krabi Province is the main tourist city in the Southern Andaman Coast (https://www.tourismthailand.org, 2020). It is famous for its scenic view and breathtaking beach and island. It has the most beautiful coral reef vistas, in the world which makes the city a great spot for coral diving. Its tourist attractions include hot springs, a wildlife sanctuary, sea caves, flourishing coral reefs and exotic marine life, limestone cliffs that draw rock climbing enthusiasts from around the world, and national parks that include the island paradises of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. The top 5 foreign tourists that visited Krabi Province in 2018 are citizens of China, Malaysia, England, Germany and France. Krabi has 592 accommodations with 21,853 rooms in total around the province. It can be said that Krabi Province is an important tourist destination of the Andaman Coast after Phuket. Availability of infrastructure, accommodation, airports, seaports, travel connections between tourist spots within the province, and tourist attractions both on land and in the sea has attracted tourists from all over the world to travel continuously to the area every year. They are responsible for the consistent growth of Krabi tourism service industry. Therefore, the aim of this research is to study the readiness of relevant agencies to support the provincial tourism growth using the responsible tourism model of key tourism stakeholders within the province and related agencies - involving government agency, tour operators and community-based tourism. The tsunami of December 2004 destroyed infrastructure in many coastal areas in South-East Asia. In January 2005, the Danish Government gave a tsunami relief grant to Thailand to re-establish the wastewater management services in some of the areas affected by the tsunami. This paper describes the systems which have been built at three locations: (a) Baan Pru Teau: A newly-built township for tsunami victims which was constructed with the contribution of the Thai Red Cross. Conventional septic tanks were installed for the treatment of blackwater from each household and its effluent and grey water (40 m3/day) are collected and treated at a 220 m2 subsurface flow constructed wetland. (b) Koh Phi Phi Don island: A wastewater collection system for the main business and hotel area of the island, a pumping station and a pressure pipe to the treatment facility, a multi-stage constructed wetland system and a system for reuse of treated wastewater. The constructed wetland system (capacity 400 m3/day) consists of vertical flow, horizontal subsurface flow, free water surface flow and pond units. Because the treatment plant is surrounded by resorts, restaurants and shops, the constructed wetland systems are designed with terrains as scenic landscaping. (c) Patong: A 5,000 m2 constructed wetland system has been established to treat polluted water from drainage canals which collect overflow from septic tanks and grey water from residential areas. It is envisaged that these three systems will serve as prototype demonstration systems for appropriate wastewater management in Thailand and other tropical countries.

ABSTRACT Antibodies against enterocin A were obtained by immunization of rabbits with synthetic peptides PH4 and PH5 designed, respectively, on the N- and C-terminal amino acid sequences of enterocin A and conjugated to the carrier protein KLH. Anti-PH4-KLH antibodies not only recognized enterocin A but also pediocin PA-1, enterocin P, and sakacin A, three bacteriocins which share the N-terminal class IIa consensus motif (YGNGVXC) that is contained in the sequence of the peptide PH4. In contrast, anti-PH5-KLH antibodies only reacted with enterocin A because the amino acid sequences of the C-terminal parts of class IIa bacteriocins are highly variable. Enterocin A and/or pediocin PA-1 structural and immunity genes were introduced in Lactococcus lactis IL1403 to achieve (co)production of the bacteriocins. The level of production of the two bacteriocins was significantly lower than that obtained by the wild-type producers, a fact that suggests a low efficiency of transport and/or maturation of these bacteriocins by the chromosomally encoded bacteriocin translocation machinery of IL1403. Despite the low production levels, both bacteriocins could be specifically detected and quantified with the anti-PH5-KLH (anti-enterocin A) antibodies isolated in this study and the anti-PH2-KLH (anti-pediocin PA-1) antibodies previously generated (J. M. Martı́nez, M. I. Martı́nez, A. M. Suárez, C. Herranz, P. Casaus, L. M. Cintas, J. M. Rodrı́guez, and P. E. Hernández, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 64:4536–4545, 1998). In this work, the availability of antibodies for the specific detection and quantification of enterocin A and pediocin PA-1 was crucial to demonstrate coproduction of both bacteriocins by L. lactis IL1403(pJM04), because indicator strains that are selectively inhibited by each bacteriocin are not available.

Primary and secondary aminoalkylphosphanes R2N-(CH2)m-PH2 (R2 = Me2, nBu2, C5H10, C4H8O, 2-(1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinyl); m = 2, 3, 6, 10, 11; 1-6) or [R2N-(CH2)m]2PH (7, R2 = C5H10; m = 2) are accessible by aminoalkylation of PH3 with ω̃ -chloroalkylamines R2N-(CH2)m-Cl in the superbasic medium DMSO/KOH (DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide). By selective N-quaternization of 1, 2, 4-6 with R'I (R' = Me, CnH2n+1; n = 6-8, 12, 16, 18) in the two-phase system CH2Cl2/H2O novel primary phosphanes [R'R2N-(CH2)m-PH2]+I- (11-16f) with quaternary ammonium groups in the alkyl side chain are obtained. The water solubility of 11-16f decreases with increasing chain length (n) of R′ 11 (R = R' = Me; m = 2) shows a trans conformation at the C2H4 bridge according to an X-ray structural analysis. Protonation of 1, 2, 4, 5 with HCl affords the water-soluble hydrochlorides [HR2N-(CH2)m-PH2]+Cl- (19-22). The cationic primary phosphanes 11-16f are stable towards oxygen. By oxidation of 11 with one or two equivalents of H2O2 the primary phosphane oxide [Me3N-(CH2)2-P(O)H2]+I- (23) or the phosphonous acid [Me3N-(CH2)2- P(O)(OH)H]+I- (23a) are formed. Hofmann degradation of 11 or 16c with KOH yields phosphirane in good yields. Reaction of 1, 2, 4-6 (L) with Fe2(CO)9 at ambient temperature yields stable complexes (CO)4FeL (26-30). Under more rigorous conditions Fe3 clusters (31, 32) with free R2N groups are obtained.

Under more rigorous conditions secondary phosphines R2PH (R = Me, n-Bu, CH2=CH–CH2) are also accessible in good yields. Using 1,3-dibromo(chloro)-propane or -butane diprimary phosphines H2P–(CH2)2–CHR–PH2 (R = H, Me) are obtained, while 1,4-dibromopentane in a high yield cyclization reaction leads to 2-methylphospholane (12) with a chiral C-atom in a-position.

All-solid-state supercapacitors have gained increasing attention as wearable energy storage devices, partially due to their flexible, safe, and lightweight natures. However, their electrochemical performances are largely hampered by the low flexibility and durability of current polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based electrolytes. Herein, a novel polyvinyl alcohol-polyethyleneimine (PVA-PEI) based, conductive and elastic hydrogel was devised as an all-in-one electrolyte platform for wearable supercapacitor (WSC). For proof-of-concept, we assembled all-solid-state supercapacitors based on boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) intercalated graphene electrodes and PVA-PEI based gel electrolyte. Furthermore, by varying the electrolyte ions, we observed synergistic effects between the hydrogel and the electrode materials when KOH was used as electrolyte ions, as the Graphene/BNNS@PVA-PEI-KOH WSCs exhibited a significantly improved areal capacitance of 0.35 F/cm2 and a smaller ESR of 6.02 ohm/cm2. Moreover, due to the high flexibility and durability of the PVA-PEI hydrogel electrolyte, the developed WSCs behave excellent flexibility and cycling stability under different bending states and after 5000 cycles. Therefore, the conductive, yet elastic, PVA-PEI hydrogel represents an attractive electrolyte platform for WSC, and the Graphene/BNNS@PVA-PEI-KOH WSCs shows broad potentials in powering wearable electronic devices.

W pracy omówiono polihydroksyalkanolany, biopolimery o ogromnym potencjale. Scharakteryzowano ich właściwości i zastosowanie, zwracając uwagę na takie ich zalety jak biozgodność (brak toksyczności w stosunku do organizmu), podatność na biodegradację, czy właściwości termoplastyczne, zbliżone do tworzyw sztucznych. Niestety, pomimo wielu zalet, PHA nie są powszechnie wykorzystywane, głównie ze względu na wysoki koszt ich wytwarzania i oczyszczania. Dlatego w celu obniżenia kosztów podejmuje się działania w kierunku zastąpienia podczas hodowli drobnoustrojów źródła węgla tanimi materiałami odpadowymi. Kolejnym sposobem zmniejszenia kosztów produkcji PHA jest wykorzystanie modyfikowanych genetycznie mikroorganizmów. Alternatywą może być także poszukiwanie nowych metod wyodrębniania biopolimeru z komórek. Dobrym pomysłem może być także łączenie chemicznych i mechanicznych metod oczyszczania PHA. PHA bardzo często wykorzystywane są w medycynie, zastępując tworzywa sztuczne, gdzie istotne są właściwości materiałów oraz ich podatność na biodegradację. Niestety, ze względu na cenę, do wytwarzania polimerowych przedmiotów użytku codziennego, polimery syntetyczne wykorzystywane są częściej.

A new species of Apocynaceae from Cambodia, Sarcolobus cambogensis McHone & Livsh., is described and illustrated. Specimens of the new species, all from the Central Cardamom Region, Koh Kong Province, have morphological characters diagnostic of Sarcolobus (truncate stylehead apices and oblong corpuscula). Like Sarcolobus luzonensis (Warb.) P.I. Forst. and S. borneensis (van Steenis) P.I. Forst., S. cambogensis has a rheophytic, shrubby habit, unusual in both Sarcolobus and Apocynaceae. It differs from the latter two species in its broader leaves, larger corona, and wider caudicles.

Analiza modelnih otopina nakon ispitivanja migracije provedena je pomoću UV/Vis spektroskopije. Zbog utvrđene hidrolize PHB-a pod utjecajem modelnih otopina nemoguće je odrediti migraciju MMT-a iz kompozita PHB/MMT. Diferencijalna pretražna kalorimetrija (DSC) potvrdila je razgradnju PHB-a. Provedenim istraživanjem ukazalo se na potencijal uporabe UV/Vis spektroskopije kod ispitivanja utjecaja modelnih otopina na polimerne kompozite.

Abstract:
In the pelleting process, mash feed passes through a conditioner were it is exposed to steam under high pressure and pushed through the die to form pellets. To determine the effect of adding different amounts of water and different thermal processing parameters on the pellet conversion percentage, pellet durability index (PDI) and solubility of protein in KOH of broiler feed. The processing factors were combined in a 4x2 factorial scheme: four moisture addition levels (0%; 0.7%; 1.4%; 2.1%), and two thermal processes (conditioning-pelleting or conditioning-expanding-pelleting). Eight samples of each treatment were collected to evaluate quality parameters. The feed used in this study was a typical corn-soybean broiler diet processed in a commercial feed mill. The pellet conversion percentage and PDI responded linearly and positively in the range of 0 to 2.1% moisture addition. Positive and linear equations relating moisture addition in the conditioner with pellet conversion percentage and PDI were obtained (p<0.001). Expansion improved PDI and pellet percentage respectively by 18% and 21% when compared to simple conditioning-pelleting feed processing. However, an adverse effect on protein quality was observed when higher processing temperature was used. No particle size effect was observed for conditioned-expanded-pelleted feed. Medium particle size resulted in better PDI and higher pellet conversion percentage (p < 0.001) compared to coarse grinding (% pellets – 66.97% versus 64.96%; PDI – 77.30% versus 66.10%).

Titan đioxit được điều chế từ quặng ilmenit Bình Định bằng phương pháp kiềm hóa với tác nhân phân hủy quặng là dung dịch KOH. Vật liệu titan đioxit được điều chế trong điều kiện: nồng độ KOH phân hủy quặng 80 %,nồng độ H2SO4 dùng để phản ứng với chất rắn thu được ở dạng bột nhão là 4 M, tỉ lệ giữa khối lượng quặng ilmenit và thể tích axit H2SO4 là 1 : 9 và nhiệt độ nung kết tủa TiO(OH)2 là 600 oC. Vật liệu TiO2 thu được tồn tại cả hai pha anatas và rutil nhưng pha anatas chiếm ưu thế hơn với cường độ pic mạnh và sắc nét, kích thước hạt trung bình khoảng 25 nm và diện tích bề mặt riêng là 47,8 m2/g. Kết quả khảo sát sự phân hủy xanh metylen trên xúc tác TiO2 cho thấy, hoạt tính quang xúc tác của TiO2 được điều chế từ quặng ilmenit Bình Định với nguồn sáng kích thích bức xạ UV là khá tốt.

A quaternized polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane was synthesized by grafting a dimethylimidazolium end-capped side chain onto PBI. The organic–inorganic hybrid membrane of the quaternized PBI was prepared via a silane-induced crosslinking process with triethoxysilylpropyl dimethylimidazolium chloride. The chemical structure and membrane morphology were characterized using NMR, FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDX, AFM, SAXS, and XPS techniques. Compared with the pristine membrane of dimethylimidazolium-functionalized PBI, its hybrid membrane exhibited a lower swelling ratio, higher mechanical strength, and better oxidative stability. However, the morphology of hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation, which facilitates the ion transport along hydrophilic channels, only successfully developed in the pristine membrane. As a result, the hydroxide conductivity of the pristine membrane (5.02 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C) was measured higher than that of the hybrid membrane (2.22 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C). The hydroxide conductivity and tensile results suggested that both membranes had good alkaline stability in 2M KOH solution at 80 °C. Furthermore, the maximum power densities of the pristine and hybrid membranes of dimethylimidazolium-functionalized PBI reached 241 mW cm−2 and 152 mW cm−2 at 60 °C, respectively. The fuel cell performance result demonstrates that these two membranes are promising as AEMs for fuel cell applications.

Crosslinked membranes have been synthesized by a casting process using polybenzimidazole (PBI) and poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC). The membranes were quaternized with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) to obtain fixed positive quaternary ammonium groups. XPS analysis has showed insights into the changes from crosslinked to quaternized membranes, demonstrating that the crosslinking reaction and the incorporation of DABCO have occurred, while the 13C-NMR corroborates the reaction of DABCO with PVBC only by one nitrogen atom. Mechanical properties were evaluated, obtaining maximum stress values around 72 MPa and 40 MPa for crosslinked and quaternized membranes, respectively. Resistance to oxidative media was also satisfactory and the membranes were evaluated in single direct ethanol fuel cell. PBI-c-PVBC/OH 1:2 membrane obtained 66 mW cm−2 peak power density, 25% higher than commercial PBI membranes, using 0.5 bar backpressure of pure O2 in the cathode and 1 mL min−1 KOH 2M EtOH 2 M aqueous solution in the anode. When the pressure was increased, the best performance was obtained by the same membrane, reaching 70 mW cm−2 peak power density at 2 bar O2 backpressure. Based on the characterization and single cell performance, PBI-c-PVBC/OH membranes are considered promising candidates as anion exchange electrolytes for direct ethanol fuel cells.

Cilj istraživanja je procijeniti podudarnost veličine rezidualnog tumora, izmjerene magnetskom rezonancijom (MR) i patohistološkom dijagnostikom (PHD) u pacijentica s karcinomom dojke nakon provedene neoadjuvantne kemoterapije (NAK) te procijeniti mogući utjecaj ypT stadija tumora na nepodudarnost veličina izmjerenih navedenim metodama. Ispitanici i metode: U retrospektivno istraživanje uključeno je 50 pacijentica. Uključni kriterij su pacijentice kod kojih je učinjen operativni zahvat uz prethodno proveden NAK karcinoma dojke, na što je odgovor praćen s najmanje dva MR pregleda. Veličina tumora na MR-u uspoređena je s veličinom na PHD-u (zlatni standard) pomoću regresijske analize Passing-Bablok te je izračunat njihov koeficijent korelacije. Analizirana su sva odstupanja i podudarnosti veličine, kao i eventualni utjecaj ypT stadija tumora na razliku između dviju metoda. Razlika od ± 0,5 cm u veličini tumora procijenjenih slikovnom metodom i u PHD nalazu smatrale su se podudarnima veličinama. Rezultati: Srednja vrijednost veličine rezidualnog tumora na MR-u iznosila je 19,1 ± 17,71 mm, dok je na PHD-u iznosila 16,87 ± 18,19 mm. Izračunati r koeficijent korelacije iznosi 0.64 (p &lt; 0.001). Provedenom analizom potvrđeno je da nema značajne razlike izmjerenih veličina tumora na MR-u i PHD-u (p = 0.552) te se metode mogu smatrati podudarnima. Nije uočena statistički značajna razlika u ovisnosti o ypT stadiju tumora koja bi utjecala na nepodudarnost veličina. Zaključci: Među dvjema metodama nema konstantnog niti proporcionalnog odstupanja u mjerenjima te se metode mogu smatrati podudarnim. MR dojke je dobra metoda za procjenu veličine rezidualnog tumora dojke kod pacijentica koje su podvrgnute neoadjuvantnoj kemoterapiji usporedno s PHD-om (zlatni standard).

The contamination of soils and waters with organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), affect a large number of sites worldwide that need remediation. In this context soils amendments can be used to immobilise PAHs while maintaining soil functioning, with biochar being a promising amendment. In this experiment, phenantrene (Phe) was used as a frequent PAH contaminating soils and we studied the effect of three biochars at 1% applications to three different substrates, two agricultural topsoils and pure sand. We evaluated the changes in soil properties, sorption-desorption of Phe, and mineralisation of Phe in all treatments. Phe in pure sand was effectively sorbed to olive pruning (OBC) and rice husk (RBC) biochars, but pine biochar (PBC) was not as effective. In the soils, OBC and RBC only increased sorption of Phe in the silty soil. Desorption was affected by biochar application, RBC and OBC decreased water soluble Phe independently of the soil, which may be useful in preventing leaching of Phe into natural waters. Contrastingly, OBC and RBC slightly decreased the mineralisation of Phe in the soils, thus indicating lower bioavailability of the contaminant. Overall, biochar effects in the two tested soils were low, most likely due to the rather high soil organic C (SOC) contents of 2.2 and 2.8% with Koc values in the same range as those of the biochars. However, OBC and RBC additions can substantially increase adsorption of Phe in soils poor in SOC.

Summary Background: Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is an inhibitor of fibrinolysis. The PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism is associated with elevated plasma levels of PAI-1. Over- expression of PAI-1 and impaired fibrinolysis in homozygous carriers of the 4G/4G PAI polymorphism may lead to abnor- mal placental formation and increased risk of fetal loss (FL). The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of this polymorphism in patients with FL in a Serbian population. Methods: The study was carried out in a group of 203 women (91 controls and 112 women with FL). The presence of PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism was detected by PCR-RFLP analysis. Results: Slightly increased frequency of the PAI-1 4G/4G genotype was observed in the study group compared to the controls (32.1% vs. 30.8%). The frequency of PAI-1 was highest in women experiencing FL in the second trimester of pregnancy (50%), but this difference was not statistically sig- nificant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that PAI-1 4G/4G might be a risk factor for FL occurring in the second trimester of pregnancy. Further studies are required in order to determine the role of PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism in the etiology of FL.

Bamboo-based activated carbon was made using the activating agents KOH and KMnO4 at high temperature. This study examined the ability of unmilled and ball-milled bamboo activated using KOH or KMnO4 to fulfil the activated carbon standard parameters. Chemical activation was done using KOH and KMnO4 at 2.5% and 5% concentration, heated at 800 °C, and steamed for 1 hour. Sample size was reduced to 500 nm using high energy ball-milling at 500 rpm for 80, 150, or 180 min. Analysis included the yield, water content, ash content, volatile matter content, burn-off weight percentage, morphology analysis, functional groups (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR), crystallinity analysis (X-ray diffraction, XRD), and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) analysis. Ball-milling treatment for 150 min produced activated carbon of 449 nm in size and a particle distribution index (PDI) score of 0.66. Ball milled activated carbon from the experiment had a pore radius ranging from 1.18 to 2.49 nm. The activated carbon that met the criteria of ANSI/AWWA B604-12 (2012) standard for moisture content, iodine number, and JIS K 1474 (1967) standard for methylene blue adsorption level and surface area were milled activated carbon with activator KMnO4 2.5%.

ABSTRACT Polyclonal antibodies of predetermined specificity for pediocin PA-1 (pedA1) have been generated by immunization of rabbits with a chemically synthesized C-terminal fragment of this bacteriocin (PH2) conjugated to the carrier protein keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). The sensitivity and specificity of the PH2-KLH-generated antibodies were evaluated by the development of various enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs)—a noncompetitive indirect ELISA (NCI-ELISA), a competitive indirect ELISA (CI-ELISA), and a competitive direct ELISA (CD-ELISA)—and by immunodotting. All immunoassays indicated the existence of pedA1-specific antibodies with high relative affinities and adequate sensitivities in the sera of immunized animals. The limits of detection of pedA1 in MRS medium (Oxoid Ltd., Basingstoke, United Kingdom) were found to be 2.5 μg/ml by immunodotting and 1 μg/ml in the NCI-ELISA. However, the CI-ELISA enhanced the limit of detection of pedA1 to 0.025 μg/ml, while the amount of free pedA1 required for 50% binding inhibition was 10 μg/ml. Moreover, the CD-ELISA increased the affinity of the PH2-KLH-generated antibodies for pedA1; the limit of detection of pedA1 was less than 0.025 μg/ml, and the 50% binding inhibition value was reduced to 0.5 μg of pedA1/ml. All immunoassays and the slot dot assay detected the presence of pedA1 in the supernatant of the producing strain Pediococcus acidilactici 347, with no reactivity or negligible immunoreactivity with the supernatants of other lactic acid bacteria producing or not producing different bacteriocins. The approaches taken for the generation of antibodies and the development of immunoassays could prove useful for the generation and evaluation of antibodies of predetermined specificity for other bacteriocins of interest in the food industry.

Kod svih novodijagnostikovanih pacijenata sa karcinomom dojke određivanje ER, PR i HER-2 je danas obavezno. Mada je merenje uPA i PAI-1 tehnički validovano, do danas nije klinički rasprostranjeno i to uglavnom zbog zahteva za minimalnom količinom svežeg ili sveže zamrznutog tkiva. Određivanje ovih proteina može da se iskoristi kao pomoć pri selekciji »limfni čvor negativnih« pacijenata s karcinomom dojke kojima nije potrebna adjuvantna hemoterapija. Mada se dosta koristi u postoperativnom praćenju i praćenju terapije u poodmaklom oboljenju, klinička vrednost CA 15-3 i drugih serumskih markera nije joŠ uvek validovana u studijama nivoa dokaza I. Nedavna poboljšanja u razumevanju biologije karcinoma dojke i paralelno povećanje mogućih opcija tretmana treba da vode ka poboljšanju ishoda ove veoma hetrogene bolesti. Onkolozi joŠ uvek imaju teškoće u odabiru specifičnih strategija tretmana prema molekularnim karakteristikama oboljenja svakog pacijenta ponaosob.

The Centre for Biodiversity Genomics conducted intensive collection in Prince Edward Island National Park; Nature PEI citizen scientists and naturalists contributed specimens from across the island from several different habitats. This provincial list is dominated by the araneoid families, Linyphiidae, Theridiidae, and Araneidae, with 55, 27, and 22 species, respectively. Several non-native species, such as the theridiid Eurasian False Black Widow Spider (Steatoda bipunctata (L.)) and the araneid Red-sided Sector Spider (Zygiella atrica (C.L. Koch)), have been collected in several locations on the island, suggesting that they are well established. This work highlights the effectiveness of collaboration among citizen scientists, naturalists, and professional researchers to further our knowledge of species diversity and distributions.

Abstract Background New treatment approaches for complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) are needed. DSTA4637S is a THIOMABTM antibody-antibiotic conjugate consisting of an engineered human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that binds to wall teichoic acid at the surface of S. aureus, a protease-cleavable linker, and a novel rifamycin class antibiotic, dmDNA31. This Phase 1b study assessed the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of DSTA4637S in patients with complicated SAB. Methods Multicenter, double-blind, placebo controlled, multiple-ascending dose clinical trial. Patients 18–79 years old with complicated SAB requiring at least 4 weeks of IV anti-staphylococcal standard-of-care (SOC) antibiotics were randomized to receive 4–6 doses of 15, 45, and 100 mg/kg IV DSTA4637S or placebo (6 active:2 placebo) every 7 days in combination with SOC antibiotics. Patients needed ≥ 1 blood culture positive for S. aureus collected within 120 hours prior to randomization. Patients were followed for 120 days after the end of treatment. Results Twenty-five patients with complicated SAB (bone & joint, n=14; endocarditis, n=5; other endovascular, n=5; pneumonia, n=1) were randomized and received 1–6 doses of study drug (19 active:6 placebo). Nine patients (36%) had MRSA. Ten patients completed ≥4 doses of DSTA4637S. The most common treatment-related adverse events were infusion-related reactions (IRRs) (5/19), and abnormal serum color (5/19)/skin discoloration (3/19 (due to dmDNA31). IRRs were not dose-dependent and were reversible with supportive care. Ten of 19 patients (40%) discontinued study drug (9 DSTA4637S,1 placebo); 4/19 (21%) due to IRR. DSTA4637S recipients showed no dose-related changes in laboratory values or vital signs vs. placebo. Observed exposures (Cmax and AUC) were lower in patients immediately after dosing compared to a prior study in healthy volunteers; minimal accumulation occurred. No obvious trends in exploratory bacterial and inflammatory biomarkers were observed between treatment groups. Conclusion DSTA4637S in patients with complicated SAB demonstrated increased IRRs and decreased exposure compared to healthy volunteers, highlighting the importance of Phase I studies of novel treatments in infected SAB patients and not simply healthy controls. Abstract Biodegradable metallic implants are materials that serve as a temporary implants and scaffolds. They degrade directly in vivo and therefore eliminate need for secondary surgical intervention. They are often made of metals such as magnesium, iron, zinc and can be modified by coating with the inorganic or polymeric layer. In this work iron-based biomaterial was prepared and modified with polymeric (polyethyleneimine, PEI) layer. Its degradation behavior was studied under conditions of simulated body fluids at 37 ± 0.2 °C in the form of static immersion tests. It has been shown that the surface modification caused an acceleration of degradation of the material and also had an influence on the corrosion mechanism.

Abstract Introduction: The objective of this paper is to analyse the correlation between pain and the degree of disability, and the lesions shown on radiological examination of KOA. Material and method: The study encompassed 31 female patients (42 knees) aged 51-70 years, with diagnosed idiopathic knee osteoarthritis. Medical history and analysis of previously performed x-ray scans were conducted. The history included questions regarding pain (VAS, WOMAC index) and the maximum marching distance, the presence of oedema and instability as well as disability in everyday life (WOMAC index). The radiological lesions were assessed using the Kellgren and Lawrence Grading Scale. Moreover, the widths of the joint spaces were measured. Results: The patients’ pain in everyday activities (WOMAC) showed a positive correlation with the presence of osteophytes (r=0.32), and the intensity of the pain on the VAS correlated with the presence of joint osteophytes (r=0.46) and with the elevation of the intercondylar eminence (r=0.32). The other disorders on the x-ray image did not correlate with the pain. Positive correlations were identified between the presence of oedema (r=0.57) and instability (r=0.39), and the presence of lesions in the patellofemoral joint. The patients’ disability in everyday activities (WOMAC) showed a negative correlation with the width of the joint spaces (r<-0.34). However, no correlations were observed between the remaining x-ray lesions and the WOMAC index. Conclusions: Only a small number of subjects showed a correlation indicating an interdependency between the painful sensations and the degree of disability versus the progression of radiographic lesions. Among the KOA risk factors, it is worth noting the presence of obesity which, in these studies, affected more than half of the female patients.

On deprotection of 2 - 4 with trimethylchlorosilane in the presence of phenol the HCl adducts of the ortho-aminophenylphosphines 5 -7 are formed which may be deprotonated with KOH or NaOH to give the neutral phosphines 5a -7a. The novel secondary phosphine 8 with two ortho-aminophenyl groups is accessible by cleavage of the P-C bond in 7a with metallic lithium and subsequent hydrolysis. The bifunctional P,N ligands 6 or 6a are alternatively accessible by Pd-catalyzed P-C coupling of ortho-iodoaniline with phenylphosphine. If a 1:1 stoichiometry is employed in the coupling reaction of ortho-iodoaniline and phenylphosphine the chiral secondary phosphine 9 is formed.
