Abstract:
Vernacular architecture represents a great resource that has considerable potential to define principles for sustainable design and contemporary architecture. This publication is the result of an overall aim to produce a valuable tool for analysis regarding vernacular heritage through different assessments, in order to define principles to consider for sustainable development. This was possible through a comprehensive reflection on the principles established and the strategies to recognise in different world contexts. The present publication was the result of an in-depth approach by 46 authors from 12 countries, concerned with the analysis and critical assessment of vernacular heritage and its sustainable perspective. The book presents 8 chapters addressing operational definitions and synopses advances, regarding the main areas of vernacular heritage contribution to sustainable architecture. It also presents 15 chapters and 53 case studies of vernacular and contemporary approaches in all the 5 continents, regarding urban, architectural, technical and constructive strategies and solutions. VERSUS, HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW: Vernacular Knowledge for Sustainable Architecture is the result of a common effort undertaken by the partners ESG | Escola Superior Gallaecia, Portugal, as Project leader; CRAterre | École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble, France; DIDA | Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy; DICAAR | Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy; and UPV | Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. Abstract:
A key objective of the modern development of society is the observance of ecological and socio-economic unity in human life and comprehensive improvement of environment and quality of life should be considered in close connection with the quality of the natural landscape. The formation of scientific understanding of the unity of society and nature is driven by the need for practical implementation of such unity. This defines the focus of this monograph. Given the overall assessment of the current state of the environment in Azerbaijan, considers the scenarios for the future development of the area. The prospects of the use of biotechnology in integrated environmental protection. In the framework of the above to address complex social, environmental and production problems in Azerbaijan developed scientific basis of integrated system of industrial farms — biclusters with a closed production cycle through effective utilization of regional biological resources, whose interactions and relationships take on the character of vzaimodeistvie components for obtaining focused final result with high practical importance. Microbiological, biochemical and technological processes are the basis of all development of biotechnology. Presents the development will help strengthen the ties between science and production, establishing mechanisms to conduct applied research in the field of innovation and creation of knowledge-based technologies in solving current and future environmental problems in Azerbaijan. We offer innovative ideas distinguishes the potential need for their materialization into new products, technologies and services, including the widespread use of digital technologies to design dynamic digital environmental map in space and in time. Equity in Health Policy Assessment: Region of the Americas. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275122914.

Full text
Abstract:
The Region of the Americas has prioritized the achievement of health equity—“the absence of avoidable or remediable differences among groups of people, whether these groups are defined socially, economically, demographically or geographically” (WHO)—both through regional agreements, such as the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas (2017), and by reporting progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the Sustainable Development Goals) (2015). Public sector policy is the principal initial lever through which both national and local governments institute and finance actions toward accelerating the achievement of equity in health. This study assessed 32 national health plans to report on whether and how countries in the Region are integrating the achievement of health equity into strategic lines of action in the health sector. It provides a snapshot of approaches and advances, allowing for knowledge sharing among countries on options for attention to equity in health policy. It will also facilitate future monitoring of trends in the integration of health equity aims and approaches in policies. The study found that stated overall commitments to health equity are common, as are commitments toward the disaggregation of data and monitoring of inequalities, while other elements of health equity like, for example, the identification of populations in situations of vulnerability, receive less attention. While further study is needed on the implementation and impacts of approaches in specific programmatic actions, the study provides useful insights to inform efforts for a stronger framework for health equity action toward the Region’s goals for 2030.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we discuss prospects for a future computational neuropsychology. Computerized approaches to assessment, the ability to implement life-like scenarios in a controlled virtual environment, and teleneuropsychology offer promise for expanding available approaches to cognitive remediation and self-monitoring. Computational models are also available increasingly for integrating neuroimaging into the assessment process. Neuropsychologists can use neuroimaging to develop new frameworks for neuropsychological testing that are rooted in the current evidence base on large-scale brain system interactions. This will allow for traditional assessment of discrete areas of neurocognitive functioning to be brought in line with recent findings that highly nuanced relations exist among brain networks. Furthermore, the new findings from systems neuroscience may allow for the development of neuropsychological assessments with greater accuracy and increased targeted testing. Neuroinfomatic approaches offer computational neuropsychology an approach to knowledge sharing via well-defined neuropsychological ontologies and collaborative knowledgebases.

Abstract:
This article looks at the parties and voters in emerging democracies. It describes the weak and unstable nature of the connections between parties and voters in new democracies. It addresses the question of what explains partisan cleavages and party choices about which voters to mobilize, and reviews familiar institutionalist and structural explanations for how parties mobilize voters. The article also offers an alternative framework to understand the mobilization strategies that parties choose. The last section focuses on an assessment of the state of one's theory and knowledge about parties and voters in emerging democracies.

Abstract:
This section provides key knowledge on the pathogenesis and natural history of epididymitis and scrotal abscess, as well as providing a framework for the assessment, investigation, and management of patients presenting with these conditions. The information provided links to the knowledge and clinical skills requirement of Intermediate stage topics ‘Urinary Tract Infection’ and ‘Emergency Urology’, within the syllabus of the United Kingdom (UK) Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project (ISCP) Urology Curriculum (https://www.iscp.ac.uk/). There is a lack of data concerning the incidence and prevalence of these conditions. Previous estimates from UK general practice suggested incidence rates of epididymo-orchitis of 38/10,000 male person-years. A recent study of first presentations of epididymo-orchitis in UK general practice has reported a lower incidence of 21/10,000 male person-years in 2007. However, the true figure is likely to be higher, given that many patients will present directly to urgent care facilities.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to assess different issues related to measuring the social impact of social investment strategies, and more specifically of publicly provided services. The chapter starts with a short discussion of the role played by services in the social investment strategy, as these services are often considered to be a more appropriate social investment instrument than cash transfers. This is illustrated by discussing the distributive effects of two types of publicly provided services, namely childcare and education. A literature overview is presented of how the employment and inequality effects of these services are measured. Both first-order and second-order effects are considered, thereby also indicating gaps in knowledge for a proper assessment of such services in the framework of social investment.

Full text
Abstract:
Cause and effect understanding is the highest form of scientific knowledge. In epidemiology, demonstrating causality is difficult because of the long and complex natural history of many human diseases and because of ethical restraints. Epidemiologists should: hold the attitude that all judgements of cause and effect are tentative; understand that causal thinking demands a judgement; be alert for the play of chance, error, and bias; always consider reverse causality and confounding, utilize the power of causal models that broaden causal perspectives; apply guidelines for causality as an aid to thinking and not as a checklist; and look for corroboration of causality from other scientific frameworks for assessment of cause and effect. The ultimate aim of epidemiology is to use knowledge of cause and effect to break links between disease and its causes and to improve health. The application of erroneous knowledge has serious repercussions.

Full text
Abstract:
A Clinician’s Guide to Learning Disabilities provides succinct descriptions of the various types of learning disabilities that affect educational achievement, illustrated with numerous case studies. Clear descriptions of educational assessment best practices and score reporting simplify the interpretation of psychoeducational reports. An entire chapter on historical context and legal framework describes obligatory supports for students with learning disabilities in all settings. Chapters on preschool assessment and the transition to post–high-school college and career expand the scope of the book beyond the school years. Clinicians who work in nonschool settings view learning disorders through the lens of DSM-5. They may be surprised at IDEA requirements and how the law works to identify and serve students with learning disabilities. Clinicians may not be aware that DSM-5 is not familiar in the school setting and that their diagnoses and recommendations may not have their intended effect. Through detailed examination of relevant special education requirements and procedures, this text addresses and clarifies the confusion that clinicians and families often experience about the lack of diagnostic congruence and differing terminology between DSM-5 and IDEA. No other book describes learning disorders and the psychoeducational evaluation process for mental health clinicians who work with these children and adolescents. A chapter on referral and collaboration will inform clinicians who seek deeper educational knowledge about their clients to better guide students and their families.

Abstract:
Palliative Psychology: Clinical Perspectives on an Emerging Specialty is the first book that proposes palliative psychology as a new specialty defining the roles and competencies of psychologists working in the palliative care setting in the US context. As proposed and defined in this book, palliative psychology is a specialty for licensed psychologists interested in providing psychological assessment and interventions to patients with serious and advanced illness and their family caregivers. The psychologist’s involvement can begin after a diagnosis of serious illness and continue during treatment, transition of care, during the dying process, and in bereavement. This book follows the framework developed by the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, which identifies eight domains of specialist palliative care. The chapters of the book explore each of the domains, describing some of the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes that palliative psychologists should develop to become competent palliative care professionals. Tables and clinical case vignettes are used throughout the book to illustrate important clinical aspects related to the work of palliative psychologists.

Abstract:
This book is a reader-friendly introduction to the ethical thought of Immanuel Kant. It is structured as a guide to living in accordance with Kantian ideals of rationality and freedom, despite our human flaws, failings, and weaknesses. The book draws on a wide selection of Kant’s writings so as to make his ethical framework accessible and thought-provoking for modern readers, as well as responsive to contemporary ethical concerns. Part One provides an overview of Kant’s general ethical framework, starting with his conception of freedom and his view of human nature. It covers his account of moral motivation, the three main formulations of his categorical imperative, key Kantian concepts like respect, autonomy, dignity, and love, and it also includes a broad overview of Kant’s entire system of duties. Part Two takes up Kant’s views on self-knowledge and moral assessment of ourselves and others. Part Three consists in an overview of seven crucial Kantian vices: servility, arrogance, contempt, gossiping, mockery, deceitfulness, and drunkenness. Part Four sets out five Kantian life goals—self-development, cheerfulness, reserve, beneficence, and gratitude, while Part Five focuses on Kant’s remarks on social relationships, including friendship, romantic encounters, politeness, and dinner parties. Part Six concludes with Kant’s argument for being hopeful about moral progress, even in the face of despair and disillusionment about the current state of the world. The book aims to present Kantian ethics as an appealing guide for life, one that emphasizes freedom, self-improvement, and optimism about the future.

Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of various frameworks for organizing and measuring foundational academic and workplace competencies that are needed for broad career success and expands on research on work readiness standards and benchmarks. Foundational competencies and career success are thoroughly defined, with discussion about blending and assessing the combination of knowledge, cognitive and noncognitive skills, and behaviors important for success. Examples of how foundational competencies are used in the workplace and in educational settings are highlighted with recommendations on building a common language between educators and employers. To support this common language, linking foundational competency assessments and credentials to labor market outcomes is critical. These frameworks can be used by education-to-career continuum stakeholders to develop authentic learning experiences that incorporate work-based foundational competencies into kindergarten through 12th grade and postsecondary education programs.

Reber, Arthur S., and Rhianon Allen, eds. The Cognitive Unconscious. Oxford University PressNew York, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197501573.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The material in The Cognitive Unconscious began as a master’s thesis that examined the manner in which knowledge of fairly complex, patterned material could be acquired without any conscious effort to learn it and with little to no awareness of what had been learned. It was dubbed implicit learning and, over more than fifty years, became a vigorously researched area in the social sciences. The Cognitive Unconscious brings together several dozen scientists from a variety of backgrounds and presents a broad (and deep) overview of how the exploration of the cognitive unconscious grew from that first study to a domain of research to which contributions have been made by sociologists, neuroscientists, evolutionary biologists, modelers, social and organizational psychologists, sport psychologists, primatologists, developmentalists, linguists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, and measurement and assessment researchers. The core message seems fairly straightforward. Unconscious, implicit cognitive processes play a role in virtually everything interesting that human beings do. The implicit and explicit elements of cognition form a rich and complex interactive framework that make up who we are. The volume has contributions from over thirty distinguished authors from nine different countries and gives a balanced and thorough overview of where the field is today, a bit over a half-century since the first experiments were run.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out why an SIA is of timely and crucial importance for European member states to meet the challenges of increased poverty and social exclusion, demographic ageing and increasingly knowledge-based societies, as well as to deliver on the EU’s objective of upward social convergence. The chapter outlines the key elements of an SIA that the European Commission has sought to take forward in its policy guidance. The Commission’s efforts to support reforms in this direction are discussed, ranging from the mobilization of governance instruments and funds, to financial support for research, innovation, and capacity building, and the development of assessment frameworks in support of evidence-based policy reform. Finally, the chapter explores some potential avenues for further work, at both EU and country level, to support and monitor the implementation of policy reforms.

Lackey, Jennifer. The Epistemology of Groups. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199656608.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Groups are often said to bear responsibility for their actions, many of which have enormous moral, legal, and social significance. The Trump Administration, for instance, is said to be responsible for the U.S.’s inept and deceptive handling of COVID-19 and the harms that American citizens have suffered as a result. But are groups subject to normative assessment simply in virtue of their individual members being so, or are they somehow agents in their own right? Answering this question depends on understanding key concepts in the epistemology of groups, as we cannot hold the Trump Administration responsible without first determining what it believed, knew, and said. Deflationary theorists hold that group phenomena can be understood entirely in terms of individual members and their states. Inflationary theorists maintain that group phenomena are importantly over and above, or otherwise distinct from, individual members and their states. It is argued that neither approach is satisfactory. Groups are more than their members, but not because they have “minds of their own,” as the inflationists hold. Instead, this book shows how group phenomena—like belief, justification, and knowledge—depend on what the individual group members do or are capable of doing while being subject to group-level normative requirements. This framework, it is argued, allows for the correct distribution of responsibility across groups and their individual members.

Full text
Abstract:
With this book we present a selection of articles that critically deal with (internationally comparative) large-scale assessments. We acknowledge that studies such as PIAAC are often designed, financed and implemented on the basis of neo-liberal worldviews. Nevertheless, we would like to use the articles that are presented here to show the various ways in which adult and continuing education can benefit and learn from the knowledge that they generate. In PIAAC, for example, there are huge differences between the surveyed variables and the theoretical frameworks on literacies and literacy practices that the New Literacy Studies (NLS) have brought out. This book features eleven articles, which – with the NLS’s theoretical considerations and points of criticism in mind – find new and alternative evaluations and interpretations of the data. Not only can they show effects of marginalization on a large scale, but the data can also provide information about mechanisms of power in relation to literacy and basic competencies.

Full text
Abstract:
Diversity training is an important and widely used component of organizational diversity management initiatives. This chapter reviews theory and research on diversity training design, delivery, evaluation, and effectiveness. The review suggests that in the past 10 to 15 years of research, advancements have been made on several fronts. The research literature on diversity training includes frameworks for pretraining needs assessment, learning models to guide diversity training design choices, and empirical evidence of diversity training’s impact on training outcomes. However, the review also notes two major shortcomings. First, research has emphasized diversity training’s effect on short-term changes in trainees’ knowledge and attitudes, neglecting longer-term changes in their skills and behavior. Second, research has emphasized diversity training’s effect on individual-level learning outcomes, neglecting its impact on team- and organization-level outcomes. These shortcomings are unlikely to be addressed unless scholars and practitioners engage in more collaborative field-based research on diversity training.

Full text
Abstract:
Policy dissemination research is focused on understanding and addressing these barriers and can be defined as: the study of the targeted distribution of scientific evidence to policymakers to understand how to promote the adoption and sustainment of evidence-based policies. Policy dissemination research studies can be classified as audience research studies—which are formative assessments of policymakers’ knowledge, attitudes, and uses of research evidence and policy contexts—and intervention studies, which test the effectiveness of different policymaker-focused dissemination strategies. Outcomes of policy dissemination research studies include self-report policymaker research utilization, self-report policymaker support for evidence-based policies, and observed policymaker research utilization. There is also a need to grow the field of policy implementation research and integrate theories, frameworks, and methods across the fields of public administration research, political science, and implementation science. Among the topics covered in this book, policy dissemination research is among the least developed.

Full text
Abstract:
The authors present the most relevant factors and considerations involved in the intersection between behavioral science and firearms. The intent is to provide a comprehensive review of these issues in the context of the professional literatures in these areas and to serve as an informational and educational source for a wide range of readers and as a reference text for practitioners, institutional and law enforcement personnel, legislators, and academicians and students in fields such as psychology, criminal justice, and public health. Concepts are presented using a best-practices model that encourages and promotes empirically supported practice, research, policy, and overall decision-making. This book is distinct from all others published in this area, given its inclusion and integration of the following: (1) a focus on the behavioral science of firearm-related matters; (2) review of the professional literatures and case law/legal statutes, particularly as related to firearm development and use, laws, regulations, violence, suicide, and safety; (3) considerations and information from various relevant areas: psychology, sociology, criminal justice, law, and others specific to the general public (e.g., media); (4) presentation of a framework for the assessment of civilians seeking firearms permits, reinstatement of their firearms subsequent to revocation, and considerations for relevant others, such as military, law enforcement and corrections personnel, and security and armed guards; (5) issues related to treatment and self-care in the context of firearm use and ownership; (6) a focus on how the principles and empirical knowledge within behavioral science can inform and improve firearm-related policy, practice, and research.

Full text
Abstract:
Winning at the Acquisition Game is a collection of the best materials, insights, tools, and templates which comprise the popular Mergers and Acquisitions course taught in the MBA and Executive MBA programs at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Each chapter provides readers with practical knowledge and tools to help them understand the entire mergers and acquisitions (M&A) process from pre-deal strategy and due diligence, through transaction valuation, negotiations, and closing, to post-deal implementation, workforce motivation, innovation for revenue growth, and results measurement and reporting. As a result, readers will gain valuable insights into the entire M&A process, from beginning to end, connecting traditionally distinct, “siloed” functional expertise across the process. Case examples in the chapters describe how each stage of the process has been implemented by companies across various industries. Each chapter concludes with a set of discussion questions and a self-assessment that readers can use to determine their firm’s current level of M&A capability. Practical frameworks, tools, and templates are also provided in an “M&A Workbook” that readers can apply to their own transactions, now or in the future.
