Abstract:
This article describes syphilis trends, characteristics of patients from 2000 to 2003 in France and trends of the benzylpenicillin benzathine 2.4 million UI sales from 2001 to 2003. The ongoing surveillance system for syphilis case reporting since 2001 has been set up in volunteer settings, mostly public settings where STI treatment is offered. Clinical case reporting is complemented by sexual behavioural data based on a self-administered questionnaire. From 2000 to 2003, 1089 syphilis cases were reported in France, increasing from 37 cases in 2000 to 428 in 2003. Overall, 96% of syphilis cases were in men with a mean age of 36.5 years and 70% of whom were born in France. The proportion of syphilis cases with HIV co-infection decreased over time from 60% in 2000 to 33% in 2003. The most affected area by the syphilis epidemic is the Ile-de-France region, mainly the city of Paris. The greatest proportion of syphilis cases diagnosed in men who have sex with men (MSM) were in the Ile-de-France region, where they made up 87% of cases, compared with 75% in other regions. Among the patients who completed the self-administered questionnaire on sexual behaviour, 83% reported having casual sex partners in the 3 months prior to their syphilis diagnosis. Trends in the sales of benzylpenicillin benzathine 2.4 million UI in private pharmacies are similar to those observed in the surveillance system, and increased between 2001 and 2003. In conclusion, syphilis transmission is still ongoing in France in 2003 and the role of unprotected oral sex in the transmission of syphilis should be emphasised.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article studies a group of nineteen Argentinean composers who settled in Paris between 1970 and 2000. In addition to social and political factors of Argentine history – including the last military dictatorship (1976–83) and the 1989 period of ‘hyperinflation’ (1989) – these composers wanted to develop their careers in a professional field with the history, size, and diversity of Paris. Since the 1970s, France began a strong state policy supporting the arts; this action promoted a process of internationalization of Paris's artistic life. Contemporary music was viewed by participants and creators as an open and cosmopolitan space. Although the paradigm of autonomy suggests that nationality is less relevant than the individuality of each composer, the latter continues to function as an identity marker and, therefore, as a classification strategy both in France and in Argentina.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Klezmer music, formerly practiced by Ashkenazi Jewish musicians to enliven celebrations linked to Jewish life in Eastern Europe, was enriched by migrations and impoverished by the numerous pogroms suffered by the Jewish people. Parallel to the "revival" of klezmer music in the United States in the 1970s, the Parisian klezmer music scene experienced a revival and it has since developed with various ensembles practicing exclusively klezmer music, others combining klezmer music and Yiddish singing, and educational ensembles. The klezmer music scene then stood out for its musical approach, at the crossroads of conservation and innovation. By adopting an ethnomusicological approach, this thesis explores the multiple dimensions of the current Parisian klezmer musical scene, focusing on its definition, its relationship to the context, its musical interpretation and its transmission. Through a precise analysis of the discourses, this thesis shows how the definition of the word "klezmer" evolves over time and adapts to the contexts of practice and the interpretations of the musicians, to sometimes differ from that given by the musicological writings. By adopting a comparative approach and thanks to the observation of Yiddish gatherings holding an important place in the international transmission of klezmer music, this thesis aims to enrich the understanding of Parisian cultural diversity by observing what place klezmer music holds in the landscape. Vallet, Anne-Claire. Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021EHES0019.

Full text
Abstract:
Vacant lots and derelict spaces along motorways, insofar as they are wastelands, have a temporary but chronic existence in the city. These wastelands may appear, from the outside, to be abandoned, unoccupied, and sometimes impenetrable. However, they often include shelters, tents or huts, little or not at all visible from the urban spaces that surround them. Based on an ethnography of these discrete, precarious and unstable situations, this doctoral dissertation in anthropology examines from within and through the lens of dwelling, wastelands located in the inner suburbs of Paris. What does the effacement of shelters tell about the "being-in-the-world" and the relationship to the city of their inhabitants? How does this visual disappearance make it possible to understand what constitutes a certain habitability of wasteland? How does this habitability differ from, and even how does it confront, appropriation? Effacement of shelters, “being-in-the-world”, and relationship to the city show that, among other things, these wasteland - seemingly useless, fenced, indeterminate, unsuitable as housing or shelter - are, within the determined, planned and controlled city, essential for those who, French or foreign, from Europe or otherwise, migrants or immigrants, staying for a short time or for a long time in the city, do not have their own space and are not protected by society, the City or the State

Abstract:

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 10, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA100054.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on a case study built around the analysis of the speeches produced by the various actors in the institutional fields concerned (the field of tourist accommodation for Airbnb, that of passenger transportation for Uber), I seek to highlight the strategies of the platforms to build their place in the social space. I use different analytical grids to understand the strategies implemented by Airbnb and Uber: the dynamics of platform business ecosystems developed by strategic management research, the megamarketing grid defined by Kotler in 1986, neo-institutional theory and its latest developments concerning institutional work and the question of legitimacy. I find that Airbnb and Uber have each mobilized their megamarketing skills in their own way to build their business ecosystem and legitimacy system, which is a real support for their institutional conquest. These different expressions of their strategies are also embodied in the institutional work process, which is oriented towards negotiation for Airbnb and confrontation for Uber. The results of the institutional process have similarities between the two cases: constitution of the legitimacy systems necessary to interpret the role of these two platforms, legal recognition of the activities permitted by the platforms and their producer sides, adjustment of the offers of established professionals. This work provides a glimpse of a platform life cycle model, taking into account the dynamics of these organizational forms and those resulting from institutional work and their quest for legitimacy

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the monetization potential of non-market values in the environmental sector, for public decisions, through the analysis of two examples : renewable energy produced by photovoltaic solar panels and household waste management. Thus, it was necessary to create a valuation weighting factors reference base, so as to convert the impact of quantitative flows (tons of C02 , kg of nitrogen oxide emissions. . . ) into monetized value (euro per C02, euro per kgNOx. . . ). The economic and environmental assessments of the installation of photovoltaic panels on municipal buildings in Paris show a resulting social cost. Concerning domestic waste management in Paris in 2007, monetized data brought forth several interesting facts : environmental benefit of recycling, environmental performance of the SYCTOM incinerators. . . The analysis was undertaken by pursuing a 30 year projection. This analysis served as a reference to study the effectiveness of actions to improve the future environmental performance thus highlighting another benefit of monetization, which is the possibility to develop and analyze scenarios under budget constraint. The results based on WF coming from different studies and settings are weak but preferable to the lack of data which may lead to potentially arbitrary decisions and therefore contrary to environmental interest (secondary effects not taken into account, mobilizing budget for limited effects. . . ). These verifiable results with ranges of uncertainty represent support of discussion around a single aggregate indicator easier to handle and more comprehensible than multiple physical flows of impacts. A wide set of referenced WF accompanied by rules of use and rules of evolution would allow developing interest in monetization in France and thus generating decision tools

Which are the issues posed for the construction of a church in the urban fabric of the third millennium? Which are, currently, the places of worship -more or less visible- capable of attracting the faithful, the inhabitants but also migrants or visitors in transit? What kind of conflicts can the construction of a church, or more generally of a sacred space, create in a neighborhood and which could be the conditions to avoid it?In some cases, places of worship contribute to reinforce the feeling of belonging and/or identity, they are also points of orientation in the cities, which exceeds the scale of their communities, opening up to other confessions, also. They participate in urban life through many events that we can qualify within culture. This paper interrogates the notion of sacred space from the spatial point of view, through the analysis of the churches built in Rome and Paris, after the Great Jubilee, but also from the standpoint of individual and collective representations.Between tradition and future, attractiveness and repulsion, beyond the symbolic dimension (brand) of the sacred building, the thesis places the question of methodological processes that lead to the construction of a space both real and virtual.Final argument, the comparison between the Italian and French experiences can help to identify the differences between the two systems, the issues of a technical and sociological nature,in order to identify the manner in which we can overcome the monofunctional and restrictive use of the worship site,in favor of multi-functional uses, both internal and aggregated, which allow a wider ownership of these spaces,in an era where the churches are, gradually, more and more empty

Abstract:
The study of the frech press for the years 1970-1971 often shows a confined vision of the jordanian-palestinian conflict : King Husayn, représentative of a monarchy allied to the West, is viewed throughmajor thematics which still remain. The political system itself apparently rely on the Hashemite monarch whereas ministers did play a key role. Finally the army enable the study of the bedouin constituent of the society and the one of of the major archetypal figures whether it's a matter of the arabian-muslin values or the references regarding the mythical Arab Legion. The study of the Palestinians sers out the question of identity which has been tackled by comparing with other nations. Then comes the question of militant organizations framework Furthermore it's through the repercussions of the urban guerilla tactics and the plane hijackings that the palestinian conflict found itself defined by the journalists. As for the civilians in the majority of both sides, they were rarely taken into account even through they were the main victims of the fighing, from the label of civil war or fraticide applied to the conflict. "Black September" shows the persistency of the radings frame remaining today from the moment one's study a conflict which specificities are the opposition between "progressives" and "reactionaries" a characteristic for seventies

Abstract This book was about to go to press when we heard from Paris that the Papin affair had made a spectacular return to public attention in France. Two films, both produced by the same company (ARP), were released at the end of 2000—a fictional reconstruction of the crime and the events leading up to it (Les Blessures assassines/Murderous Wounds, directed by Jean-Pierre Denis), and a documentary inquiry into the crime and its aftermath (En quete des soeurs Papin/In Search of the Papin Sisters, directed by Claude Ventura).

Abstract:
Recent films set in Paris have called attention in various ways to the diversity of cultures, beliefs, and languages that come together in the French capital. This chapter examines four films characterized as ‘activist’. Whether it is a question of the intersecting fates of Malian or Romanian immigrants in the French capital in Austrian director Michael Haneke’s Code inconnu (2000), the life-or-death situation of an Algerian immigrant who has been forced into prostitution in Coline Serreau’s Chaos (2001, France), the purposely hilarious socio-political activism of a young woman whose father is an immigrant from Algeria and whose newfound love is of Jewish descent in Michel Leclerc’s Le nom des gens (2010), or the spontaneous kindness a witness to a fatal hit-and-run accident shows to the Moldavian victim’s wife in Catherine Corsini’s Trois mondes (2012), it is clear that these filmmakers have turned an attentive eye to the injustices that mark the experience of those from elsewhere whose trajectories have brought them to the City of Lights.

Abstract:
Minority language maintenance and childhood bilingualism have attracted attention and generated a significant number of publications over several decades. As an emerging and increasingly critical domain which provides a microscopic view of daily interactions, family language policy (FLP) is still a relatively new field of study in Sociolinguistics in France. Very little research, in which field studies are included, has been carried out since 2000. This short article attempts to analyse first-hand data collected in 2019 from ten Chinese families living in the Île-de-France region. A mixed approach, including quantitative, qualitative and sociolinguistic ethnography, was adopted. Four of the ten families were selected for study in greater detail. Surveys, interviews, recordings and onsite observations are the main methods used to collect data for this paper. This FLP case study tries to gain an insight on how Sinitic languages are maintained and handed down in the Parisian Chinese diaspora; the results of this study are also compared to FLP studies carried out in other Chinese diasporas.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a set of real-world examples of how the process used for decision-making dramatically affected the outcome and shows how different voting rules would have led to different choices. Examples include the 2000 U.S. presidential election (Bush vs. Gore, with Nader intervening) and the choice of finalist candidates in the 2016 U.S. presidential election (Clinton vs. Trump). It also includes a famous vote by 11 wine judges in France in 1976 (sometimes called “Judgment of Paris”), where we have the actual preferences of the judges. American wines won the blind taste-testing, shocking the French and eventually leading to the “democratization of the wine world . . . a watershed in the history of wine.” This chapter shows that even votes by small numbers of people can have significant effects and that the choice of voting method in part determined which wine “won” the contest.

Abstract:
Marc Knobel is a French Jew who has devoted his life to fighting neo-Nazism, a fight that has taken him repeatedly to the Internet and American websites. In February 2000, Knobel was sitting in Paris, searching the Web for Nazi memorabilia. He went to the auction site of yahoo.com, where to his horror he saw page after page of swastika arm bands, SS daggers, concentration camp photos, and even replicas of the Zyklon B gas canisters. He had found a vast collection of Nazi mementos, for sale and easily available in France but hosted on a computer in the United States by the Internet giant Yahoo. Two years earlier, Knobel had discovered Nazi hate sites on America Online and threatened a public relations war. AOL closed the sites, and Knobel assumed that a similar threat against Yahoo would have a similar effect. He was wrong. AOL, it turned out, was atypical. Located in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, AOL had always been sensitive to public relations, politics, and the realities of government power. It was more careful than most Internet companies about keeping offensive information off its sites. Yahoo, in contrast, was a product of Silicon Valley’s 1990s bubble culture. From its origins as the hobby of Stanford graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo, Yahoo by 2000 had grown to be the mighty “Lord of the Portals.” At the time, Yahoo was the Internet entrance point for more users than any other website, with a stock price, as 2000 began, of $475 per share. Yang, Yahoo’s billionaire leader, was confident and brash—he “liked the general definition of a yahoo: ‘rude, unsophisticated, uncouth.’” Obsessed with expanding market share, he thought government dumb, and speech restrictions dumber still. Confronted by an obscure activist complaining about hate speech and invoking French law, Yang’s company shrugged its high-tech shoulders. Mark Knobel was not impressed. On April 11, 2000, he sued Yahoo in a French court on behalf of the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism and others. Yahoo’s auctions, he charged, violated a French law banning trafficking in Nazi goods in France.

Dewolf, Yvette, and Charles Pomerol. "The Parisian Basin." In The Physical Geography of Western Europe. Oxford University Press, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199277759.003.0023.

Full text
Abstract:
The Parisian basin is a geographical entity whose limits are easily defined by the Armorican massif, the Massif Central, the Vosges, the Ardennes, and the English Channel. Both Burgundy and Poitou are transitional areas. The Paris basin, a more restrictive term, corresponds according to some geologists (Cavelier and Lorenz 1987) essentially to the Tertiary ‘part’ of the basin: the Île de France and surroundings. The relief of the Parisian basin results from two sets of factors: tectonic and climatic. These have operated from Triassic times until the Pleistocene and have led to the development of a geographically simple whole in its gross structure and form. However, within this framework individual natural regions (or geotypes) may be recognized. The Parisian basin is frequently considered as a model for sedimentary basins, displaying as it does, a classic framework of sedimentary formations (Pomerol 1978; Cavelier and Pomerol 1979; Cavelier et al. 1979; Pomerol and Feugueur 1986; Debrand-Passard 1995). This is evident from the geological map of France, and on the related cross-section. Indeed, the section shows the superposition of strata in a subsiding area, with a maximal thickness (3,200 m) in the Brie country. This arrangement illustrates the geometric definition of the Parisian basin, an intracratonic basin, 600 km in diameter, limited towards the west by the Armorican massif, the south by the Massif Central, the east by the Vosges, and the north-east by the Ardenno-Rhenan massif. The following geological overview is based upon the previously mentioned studies and the geological time scale. However, the analysis of the evolution of these sedimentary areas from Triassic to Neogene shows that the area named as the ‘Parisian basin’ was included in successive palaeogeographies (which were strongly influenced by adjacent seas) and overflowed across the basement regions that now act as the limits of the basin. The chronological order of the geological formations involved in the evolution of the Parisian basin according to Robin et al. (2000) is used in the following text. During the Triassic, the future Parisian basin was a gulf of the German Sea. This sea transgressed westwards and reached the meridian of Paris during the Keuper.

Abstract:
Learning a foreign language is not merely about learning its words and its grammar but is also learning about concepts, intellectual skills and such (Cummins, 2000: 18-19) that l that are usable skills in the first language. Many authors seem to think that this is mostly related to metalinguistic abilities (Bialystok, 2001; Garfinkel et Tabor, 1991; and others, see Gaonac’h: 2006). These skills, during early childhood, seem to be closely linked to later literacy competences, including reading and writing. Indeed, Cummins explains through his CUP theory that these skills are “linked and interdependent” (2001: 18) for additive bilingual subjects, who have a high proficiency in both of their languages. As these researchers worked mostly on balanced bilingualism in children, we are wondering if these advantages could also be seen on monolingual children who learn a second language at school in the pre-literacy years. If this was the case, how would the second-language learning influence and help develop first-language abilities and literacy? Would it be possible to easily develop a method for children in all types of schools, without the g generally high costs (financial and human) of a bilingual education? The aim of this presentation is to explore how this could be effective and if it is, how we could apply this easily in any setting. It uses a c ase-study currently taking place in Paris, France, following 38 French-speaking children during two years from age 5 to age 7.
