For roughly two thousand years, the veneration of sacred fossil ammonites, called Shaligrams, has been an important part of Hindu and Buddhist ritual practice throughout South Asia and among the global Diaspora. Originating from a single remote region of Himalayan Nepal, called Mustang, Shaligrams are all at once fossils, divine beings, and intimate kin with families and worshippers. Through their lives, movements, and materiality, Shaligrams then reveal fascinating new dimensions of religious practice, pilgrimage, and politics. But as social, environmental, and national conflicts in the politically-contentious region of Mustang continue to escalate, the geologic, mythic, and religious movements of Shaligrams have come to act as parallels to the mobility of people through both space and time. Shaligram mobility therefore traverses through multiple social worlds, multiple religions, and multiple nations revealing Shaligram practitioners as a distinct, alternative, community struggling for a place in a world on the edge.

Monografija sledi ciljem projekta: obuditi starodavno povezanost življenja ljudi z rastlinami in jo predstaviti sodobnemu času na način, da bo služila trajnostnem čezmejnem turizmu, razvoju podeželja in sonaravnem ravnanju z okoljem. Rdeča nit projekta so ostanki gradišč ali kaštelirjev, kot se imenujejo v regiji od Krasa do Kvarnerja. Nekoč najmarkantnejše strukture v krajini so danes skoraj popolnoma pozabljena dediščina regije, ki je v prazgodovini tvorila enotno območje.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit Latin America particularly hard. In no other region of the world have so many people been infected with the virus as here. Influenced by the pandemic, poverty and inequality have increased, the economic crisis has worsened and, in some countries, authoritarian and repressive tendencies have grown, all of which poses enormous challenges for the region. This anthology is dedicated to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and pandemic policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. The articles it contains examine the consequences of the pandemic in terms of social inequalities, gender relations, violence against women, democracy, human rights, labour, the mobilisation of protest and environmental policy. They discuss what social and political lessons can be drawn from the pandemic experience in Latin America at the end of 2021, when the region is far from a post-pandemic era. Ob imenu Koroška imajo posamezniki različne asociacije. Večina nas verjetno pomisli na slovensko pokrajino ob meji z Avstriji, ali pa na avstrijsko pokrajino ob meji s Slovenijo. Ozemlje nekdaj enotne vojvodine je skozi zgodovino prehajalo med različne vladarje, ob razpadu Avstro-Ogrske pa je blo dokončno razdeljeno med dve novi državi. Sledili so diplomatski manevri, a del slovenskega naroda je ostal izven matične domovine. Pokrajina, ki je ostala na slovenski strani meje je znana po visokem deležu poraščenosti z gozdom in ležišči nekaterih rud, kar je v času industrializacije krojilo gospodarski ustroj te pokrajine. Črna in barvna metalurgija pa nista pustili pokrajine brez posledic – naravno okolje pa tudi naselja in njihovo prebivalstvo so in še vedno plačujejo davek onesnaženosti. Poleg obmejne lege in okoljskih bremen je tudi prometna odmaknjenost botrovala k slabšemu razvojnemu potencialu regije. Zadnja desetletja se kažejo premiki na bolje. Koroška je postala prepoznana kot zanimiva turistična destinacija, nekateri gospodarski subjekti so našli potencial v marljivi delovni sili, tudi prometna odmaknjenost bo počasi postala preteklost. Ob smelem prostorskem načrtovanju, sodobnih tehnologijah in nekaterih novih razvojnih priložnostih se bo tudi Koroška lahko postavila ob bok najrazvitejšim slovenskim pokrajinam. Določene izzive, s katerimi se pokrajina srečuje, avtorice in avtorji naslavljajo tudi v pričujoči znanstveni monografiji. Izpostavljene so tudi nekatere naravno in družbeno geografske prvine, ki so lastne Koroški, posamezna poglavja pa črpajo svoje vsebine tudi iz njene preteklosti.

How can we transform urban environments to encourage durability and mediate the social price of myriad risks and vulnerability?Our work here is to build a bridge from archaeology to mainstream architectural and design theory. The study of places, landscapes, and regions links the two fields. Architecture can be shaped and enhanced by the long-term cultural and geographic perspective afforded by archaeology; architecture can offer archaeology a ride into the future. We hope that our efforts are novel enough to be inspiring and connected enough to allow existing concepts to be furthered. The bridge unites three domains: material, social, and aesthetic. We look to the past to find material technologies—new engineering and conceptual solutions to an array of problems—and the past obliges with many examples. However, these technologies in their material aspects are only part of the story. The archaeologist sees them as playing a role in a system. This system, while mechanically functional, is also profoundly social: it includes administrative structures, but also innumerable other kinds of relationships—kin groups, neighborhoods, genders—that mirror the embedded relations between humans and nature. As in architecture, systems include semantics and aesthetics: not only are these forms pleasing to the eye, but they also tell stories of history and place and give identity and meaning to the lives in which they are enmeshed. This multi-functionality and multi-vocality are inherent in past systems.

This book describes the choices open to farming families in the Sahelian village of Kala, in central Mali. Life in this drought-prone region is harsh and full of risk to health, crops, and livestock, yet there are also opportunities open to the hard-working, audacious and lucky, bringing considerable returns if the timing is right. Three inter-related themes underlie the analysis of production and investment decisions faced by households; the role of risk, the long timeframe within which decisions are made, and the close links between economic performance and household size and organisation. Climatic variability and demographic uncertainty lie at the heart of domestic structures; the extreme vulnerability faced by single individuals means people cluster in large kin-based groups, pooling risks and providing protection. The very limited development of labour markets means that households rely almost entirely on their own members for their workforce, and generating the capital needed for investing in ploughs, wells, carts and livestock must stem from a good year’s grain surplus and migration earnings. Based on field-research over the period 1980-82, this study illustrates a successful response to making ends meet in a land abundant region, despite high risks of drought. A follow-up study of this village was published in 2020: Land, Investment, and Migration. Thirty-five years of village life in Mali (OUP).

This chapter explains the significance of baseball among the Nikkei, or the Japanese diaspora, in the United States. Throughout the history of their people in the United States, the national pastime resonated strongly among the Japanese from the time that its sojourners, the Issei, came to America to that of the Yonsei, the fourth generation. And, much more than a recreational activity, the game commanded respect as it grew to become part of their heritage. Baseball, as they organized and played it, also crossed geographical and generation boundaries. Rooted in the land of their forefathers, the Nikkei resurrected it in the American communities where they landed. “Their baseball” was metropolitan and rural and employed as a means to network with kin in other regions, and also shaped and demonstrated the Japanese American identity in profound ways.

Castle Rackrent's narrator, Thady Quirk, gives us four generations of Rackrent heirs - Sir Patrick, the dissipated spendthrift; Sir Murtagh, the litigating fiend; Sir Kit, the brutal husband and gambling absentee; and Sir Condy, the lovable and improvident dupe of Thady's own son, Jason. With this satire on Anglo-Irish landlords Edgeworth pioneered the regional novel and inspired Sir Walter Scott's Waverly (1814). She also changed the focus of conflict in Ireland from religion to class and boldly predicted the rise of the Irish Catholic Bourgeoisie.

In 1690, the Church of Scotland rejected episcopal authority and settled as Presbyterian. The adjacent Presbyteries of Stirling and Dunblane covered an area that included both lowland and highland communities, speaking both English and Gaelic and supporting both the new government and the old – thus forming a representative picture of the nation as a whole. This book examines the ways in which the two Presbyteries operated administratively, theologically and geographically under the new regime. By surveying and analysing surviving church records from 1687 to 1710 at Presbytery and parish level, Andrew Muirhead shows how the two Presbyteries filled their pulpits, related to civil authorities, how they dealt with problematic discipline cases referred by the Kirk Sessions, their involvement in the Union negotiations and their overall functioning as human, as well as religious, institution in late 17th- and early 18th-century Scotland. The resulting study advances our understanding of the profound impact that Presbyteries had on those involved with them in any capacity.

It contextualizes the genre’s sonic innovations, theological tensions, and political assertions within the larger framework of the socioeconomic and cultural transformations taking place in black America during the post–civil rights era. Through an examination of such gospel legends as James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, Shirley Caesar, the Clark Sisters, the Winans, Al Green, and Kirk Franklin, among others, the book explores the ways in which gospel music has provided an outlet for African Americans to express their spiritual, cultural, and regional identities. Organized chronologically, When Sunday Comes pivots around six principal questions: What were the major sonic transformations in gospel music between 1968 and 1994, and to what extent were those transformations reflective of creative shifts within other musical genres, particularly R&B, soul, funk, disco, and hip-hop? In what ways were gospel artists shaped by larger political developments in the United States, i.e., the rise and fall of the Black Power movement as well as the growing influence of the Moral Majority? To what degree were the soundscapes of gospel music reflective of regional dynamics? How did the political economy of the entertainment industry affect gospel artists’ commercial opportunities? The effects of oxytocin and vasopressin on the brain and behavior can be sexually dimorphic, especially during the course of development (Bales, Kim, et al., 2004; Bales, Pfeifer, et al., 2004; Bales, Plotsky, et al., 2007; Bielsky et al., 2005a; Carter, 2003; Thompson et al., 2006; Yamamoto et al., 2005; Yamamoto et al., 2004). Given the sexual discrepancy observed in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), these two neuropeptides, oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), have received attention for their potential role in ASDs (Green and Hollander, 2010; Insel et al., 1999; Leckman & Herman, 2002; Welch et al., 2005; Winslow, 2005; Young et al., 2002). Changes in either OT or AVP and their receptors could be capable of influencing symptom domains or behaviors associated with ASDs. Arginine vasopressin is androgen dependent in some brain regions (De Vries & Panzica, 2006), and males are more sensitive to AVP, especially during development. We hypothesize here that AVP, which has a unique role in males, must be present in optimal levels to be protective against ASDs. Either excess AVP or disruptions in the AVP system could play a role in development of the traits found in ASDs. In contrast, OT may possibly be secreted in response to adversity, especially in females, serving as a protective factor.

In Walking the Way Together, Kathleen E. Jenkins offers an in-depth ethnographic study of parents and their adult children who walk the Camino de Santiago. A Catholic visitation site of medieval origins with walking paths across Europe, the Camino culminates at the shrine of St. James in the city of Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, an autonomous region of Spain. It has become a popular point of religious tourism for Catholics, spiritual seekers, scholars, adventurers, and cultural tourists. In 2019, 347,578 people arrived at the Pilgrim’s Office seeking a certificate of completion; they had walked anywhere from 100 to over 800 kilometers. Like other sites of pilgrimage and tourism, the Camino has been deeply altered by media and digital technologies. The book brings alive family stories of investing in pilgrimage as a practice for strengthening kin relationships and becoming a part of each other’s emotional and spiritual understandings. The social and spiritual encounters that supported and inhibited these relational goals emerge as fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters describe walking for six hours or more each day through mountain, rural, and urban paths. They are stories of pleasant surprises, disappointments, lessons learned, and the far-reaching emotional power that the memory of ritual failures and successes can carry. Ultimately, they present the potential for pilgrimage to foster and maintain intimate ties in today’s fragile world, to build an engaged social consciousness, and to encourage reflection of digital devices and social medium platforms in the pursuit of spirituality.

The European museums and archives landscape provides rich collections of children's and youth drawings from different sections of the 19th and 20th centuries: A heritage of the children from war and peace periods. Who took the initiative to collect drawings from adolescents and then hand them over to museums and archives for safekeeping? Numerous European collections have emerged from an international exchange and private donations. Kritisches Glossar Hilfen zur Erziehung Im neu erschienenen Kritischen Glossar Hilfen zur Erziehung werden 54 Begriffe, die im öffentlichen und fachlichen Diskurs der Hilfen zur Erziehung eine zentrale Rolle spielen, kritisch analysiert und diskutiert. Die Leser_innen erhalten auf diese Weise einen umfassenden Einblick in aktuelle Entwicklungen, theoretische Zugänge und methodische Herangehensweisen in verschiedenen Feldern der Hilfen zur Erziehung. Der Band widmet sich zentralen Schlüsselbegriffen, die die Diskussion in der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe und insbesondere in den Erziehungshilfen prägen. Diese beeinflussen die Art und Weise, in der Fachkräfte ihr Denken und Handeln einordnen, reflektieren und deuten. Die einzelnen Stichworte in diesem Band sind auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen angesiedelt und betreffen neben Begriffen, die auf gesellschaftlich übergreifende Entwicklungen eingehen, konzeptionelle Entwürfe im engeren Feld der Hilfen zur Erziehung wie auch Techniken und Verfahren oder methodische Zugänge. El Secretario General de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, destacó que los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) son un faro para el mundo con un mensaje en el cual las naciones se han comprometido a asegurar una vida digna para todos, así como la salud del planeta para las generaciones futuras. Es así que el mejoramiento del nivel y calidad de vida de la población discapacitada en el espacio geográfico local, regional y universal, ha motivado a la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) a concertar con los gobiernos planes de desarrollo que garanticen la apropiación de los servicios de las TIC (tecnologías de la información y la comunicación) y las tecnologías emergentes, además de permitir la inclusión de esta población en el sector educativo, cultural y productivo. Colombia aceptó en el gobierno del presidente Santos las propuestas de la OMS y las incluyó en el conocido Plan Vive Digital, sobre el cual la universidad estructura un sólido trabajo investigativo que dimensiona la aceptación, apropiación y contextualización de las TIC en la población invidente, sordomuda y parapléjica. Es así como este libro pretende ser texto universitario y de consulta para todas aquellas personas que deseen tener pautas del proceso de educación inclusiva en Colombia. Este aborda el tema a través de cuatro capítulos detallados a continuación. En el análisis del índice de impacto de las TIC en la población con discapacidad, se estudiará el estado del arte de la educación inclusiva en Colombia y el uso de las herramientas TIC en las aulas de clases. Se analizarán las herramientas y metodologías que son utilizadas actualmente en la academia, las universidades y los colegios, y cómo ha sido la adaptación de estas personas con condiciones especiales a tales herramientas. También se abordará la normatividad que ha emitido el Ministerio de Educación Nacional buscando cubrir las necesidades de esta población en lo que respecta a la inclusión educativa. El estado actual de la inclusión educativa en Colombia y el uso de herramientas TIC se enmarca dentro de los ODS, ya que se habla de “Garantizar una educación inclusiva, equitativa y de calidad y promover oportunidades de aprendizaje durante toda la vida para todos” (ONU, s.f.), lo cual corresponde al objetivo de educación de calidad; al mismo tiempo, se tiene en cuenta la reducción de las desigualdades. En cuando al proyecto de investigación, se establece el “Diseño de un modelo de nuevas prácticas de aprendizaje para La educación inclusiva mediada por las TIC en la universidad colombiana para las personas con algún tipo de diversidad: Caso de estudio Universidad Libre, Sede Bosque Popular” (Universidad Libre de Colombia, 2018), el cual se presentó en la convocatoria 2018. En el desarrollo del software responsive de traducción de voz a texto E-APP, el eje central será la población con discapacidad auditiva; para ello, se ha desarrollado una solución tecnológica que permita la inclusión de dicha población dentro de las aulas de educación superior, lo cual da lugar a que las instituciones de educación superior puedan ofertarles todos sus programas académicos sin ninguna excepción. Esta solución de traducción de voz a texto incorpora nuevas técnicas de aprendizaje para la educación inclusiva mediada por las TIC en las instituciones educativas colombianas, ello para apoyar el ejercicio de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad a través de las TIC. Se indagará sobre la posibilidad de implementar un software para el apoyo del progreso cognitivo de niños diagnosticados con síndrome de Down, el cual se oriente a la educación especial que pueda servir de apoyo tanto a los educadores como a la población vulnerable.
