Abstract:
The primitive race of Soay sheep from the St Kilda archipelago in northwest Scotland has played an important role in narratives of the history of domestic sheep. The Soays, apparently a ‘Bronze Age’ race of sheep, were probably confined to the precipitous isle of Soay as soon as ‘Iron Age’ sheep were introduced to Hirta, St Kilda's main island, owing to the competitive edge of the ferocious Soay rams over the new arrivals. In the 1880s, Pitt-Rivers, following his archaeozoological interests, was the first to keep Soays in his park, their epic journey from the edge of the Atlantic to southern England enabled by his acquaintance with their owner. In the early twentieth century, Soays featured in animal bone reports for archaeological sites, were kept in parks and involved in breeding experiments, particularly around Horsham, Sussex (where their owner lived), and in Edinburgh. The transfer of 107 Soays to Hirta in 1934 and 1935, after humans had evacuated St Kilda, was a remarkable feat, enabling the important long-running Soay Sheep Project. The historical exploitation of ‘feral’ Soay sheep by the islanders of St Kilda has significant cultural ramifications.

Abstract:
In the nineteenth century in the island of St Kilda, faced with maternal mortality which reached 107.1 and excessive neonatal mortality, women went to Obe, now Leverburgh, in the island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides to be confined, often marooned therefor many months due to treacherous seas. Using family reconstruction techniques the reproductive history of some of these women is traced and these strategies assessed.

Abstract:
Forgotten, concealed histories can return with a vengeance to haunt the imagination of a nation. This article explores the seldom-discussed history of the abduction, long-term imprisonment and falsified burial of Lady Grange, who was kidnapped from Edinburgh by allies of her estranged husband, and then slowly transported to St Kilda where she spent the following nine years. It is a tale upon which James Boswell commented when he toured Scotland with Samuel Johnson, and which, in the wake of Boswell's commentary, entered the Gothic imaginary, first through the romances of Ann Radcliffe. Although marital imprisonment was sadly all too widespread during the eighteenth century, with numerous sources to choose from, the history of Lady Grange, blocked for four decades after her death, returned to haunt the pages of romances and periodical articles in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After examining what James Boswell wrote about Lady Grange, the article focuses on two romances of Ann Radcliffe, her 1789 The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne and her 1790 A Sicilian Romance. The article then looks at William Erskine's 1798 Epistle from Lady Grange and concludes by reflecting upon the unblocking of the story in the nineteenth-century periodical press.

Abstract:
Industrialisation, modernisation and urbanisation are common words used to describe an evolving community. General patterns are often linked to the meaning of the above words but can these patterns be applied to individual parishes on the agricultural countryside? The purpose of this study is to seek moving patterns and how they change during the 19th century in the parish of Västra Eneby, municipal of Kinda, Östergötland. The main thesis is that the study will show an increasing intensity of translocations over the parish border towards the end of the 19th century. The study is based on material from Västra Eneby’s church archives to establish statistical data beginning with 1809 and with a sample rate of 10 years, ending with 1909. The study consists of two main parts that links together in the results. Firstly all the marriages that took place are registered, with names and place of living etc. Then all the general movements across the parish border are registered and cross referenced with the marriages to search for matching entries. This gives a general idea of the moving patterns during the 19th century, both general and those in combination with the marriage. The results show an increasing amount of movements over the parish border closer to the 20th century. However there is no clear difference between sexes that follow through the whole duration of the time of the study. The movements linked to the marriages also increased in the end of the years in the study. Here a much larger share of women than men moved, although this share decreases towards the end of the time of the study. The study shows that earlier research from other parts of the country and world can be applied to the parish of Västra Eneby, although the differences between sexes are not that significant as other studies have shown.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Kilwa Kisiwani is an iconic Swahili stone town, its status and international renown exceeding any other. As discussed, it is also the town that has seen some of the largest-scale archaeological work, recovering a material record that bespeaks a thriving urban setting. Archaeological interest came on the heels of historical scholarship relating to the area; Kilwa is one of the few Swahili towns mentioned by both indigenous and foreign histories. The various versions of the Kilwa Chronicle give an account of the dynastic succession of Kilwa and of the deeds of its various sultans; together they are the earliest indigenous history of the coast. The oldest version was transcribed from oral form by João de Barros in his 1552 Da Asia (Freeman-Grenville 1962a: 89–93), while two other versions were both copied down in the nineteenth century (Strong 1895; Velten 1903). The Chronicles are similar in many aspects, although they differ on details and on the names of certain sultans. Debate over their veracity was quieted by the recovery of thousands of locally minted coins, and the dynastic lists were used as the basis for their interpretation (Album 1999; Brown 1991, 1992, 1993; Chittick 1965, 1967, 1973; Mitchell 1970; Walker 1936, 1939; Walker and Freeman-Grenville 1956). Indeed, the chronology of the Kilwa sultanate has been determined in the interplay between historical and numismatic evidence, the latter seen to act as an independent check on the less-reliable oral histories (cf. Fleisher and Wynne-Jones 2010b). This local historical record is bolstered by occasional mention in travellers’ accounts of the region. These are testament to Kilwa’s growing renown, but rarely offer much detail. In 1222, the Arab geographer Yakut referred to this ‘town in the country of the Zanj’ in his Geography and in 1331 an extended account was provided by Ibn Battuta during his travels on the coast (Freeman-Grenville 1962a: 27–32). These accounts echo a theme evident in the Kilwa Chronicles themselves: a distinction made between this town on its island, and the African continent that sits at its back.

Abstract:
Some remarks about pleonasms and tautologies from the point of view of a historian of language Summary The problems associated with redundance constitute an object of interest among the researchers of the modern Polish language. From the point of view of a historian, all of these problems are, or perhaps “should be” crucial, for redundance is a conditio which facilitates the existence of such an entity as language – in time. However, a historical perspective which could demonstrate at least the scale of this phenomenon in the entire history of the Polish language heretofore has not been provided. The article is devoted to instances of pleonasm and tautological structures, their variability and stability. As it turns out, many of them are relatively permanent; they have functioned in the Polish language for centuries. Even though they have received criticism in e.g. dictionaries of modern Polish usage, treated as erroneous in various teaching-related publications, they continue to appear in the spoken language and in texts which represent various styles, e.g: w dniu dzisiejszym (which has been a part of the Polish lexicon since at least the 16th century), cofać się do tyłu, miesiąc kwiecień etc. This fact prompts us to re-evaluate their status.

In the text the author takes into consideration educational biography of women. Starting from theoretical considerations on biography: thematic biography, autobiographical competences, history of learning and participation in education, the author highlights the issue of self-determination, placing it in the context of biography, which is the life story of the man. Empirical illustrations of earlier considerations are presented in the second part of the text. Abstract:
Artykuł „Doświadczyć podobnych widoków” — czyli słów kilka o italopisarstwie Marka Zagańczyka jest próbą interpretacji motywu podróży włoskiej, zawartego w trzech tomach eseistycznych Marka Zagańczyka: Krajobrazy i portrety, Droga do Sieny, Cyprysy i Topole.

PAST AND FUTURE ARE NOW… A FEW REFLECTIONS ON HOSPITAL OF THE TRANSFIGURATION FILM DIRECTED BY EDWARD ŻEBROWSKI The text is an attempt to look again at the realistic novel of Stanisław Lem Hospital of the Transfiguration from 1948 (part of the trilogy of the Time Not Lost) and its adaptation directed by Edward Żebrowski. However, this is not a dissertation on the indicated story or film, but rather an essay inspired by the book and film in order to make more general reflections on changes related to the problems of the 21st century and anticipation of future events, and thus: a metaphor of the world as a prison hospital for people who are “sick in the soul” and reflections on the human body and its disabilities.
