Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation of the inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the energy sector by energy supply in Khon Kaen province, Thailand. Studied areas are classified into 3 categories, which are city centre metropolitan, rural village and academic campus. The studied areas are Khon Kaen metropolitan, Nonthong village and Khon Kaen University (KKU), respectively. The GHG inventories of these areas are calculated and compared. GHG emissions are calculated by type of energy supply, which are electricity, petrol, LPG and CNG. We have found that 77 percent of GHG emissions in Khon Kaen metropolitan come from electricity consumption. In contrast, 59 percent of GHG emissions in Nonthong village come from the use of petrol. However, there is only a slight difference between the GHG emission contributions from two major sources of greenhouse gases in Khon Kaen University, where electricity use and petrol use contribute 50 and 42 percent, respectively. Finally, An insight into different characteristics of areas would help regulators to design suitable GHG reduction measures for each community. Some suggestions for GHG reduction measures were made.

Abstract:
Traction forces that vehicles use to propel their wheels depend on efficiencies of motors, power transmissions, and vehicle constructions. Behavior of driver on acceleration or deceleration varies responding to road conditions, traffic lights, and driving styles. Average speed estimation of the vehicle under known road conditions can be obtained from the standard driving cycles such as the urban driving cycle by NEDC and the highway fuel economy test cycle (HWFET) by EPA. An urban area, Khon Kaen province located in Northeastern part of Thailand, mostly has flat and rough road conditions that have not been well recorded. In this study a GPS device was installed on a midsize vehicle to record speed and time on roundtrip test drives. In this paper, the data on speed of the vehicle traveled from Department of Electrical Engineering, Khon Kaen University to four nearby locations were investigated than compared with standard driving cycles. These data offer greater knowledge and development in power consumption of electric vehicles and transportation sector.

Abstract:
Abstract The occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetonitriles (HANs) in three water distribution networks (Thapra, Kota, and Khon Kaen University (KKU)) in Khon Kaen Municipality, Thailand, from November 2015 to December 2016 was investigated. The highest THMs and HANs were 584 μg/L and 30 μg/L, respectively. Chloroform was the dominant species of the THM pool and trichloroacetonitriles were the dominant species for HANs. Water treatment plants using free chlorine (Thapra and Kota) formed more THMs than the plant using ClO2 (KKU). In the summer season, more brominate THMs were observed. In many locations, total THM concentrations were found to be higher than the drinking water standard of the Provincial Water Authority of Thailand. The concentration of THMs tended to increase with greater distance from the water plants (as water aged), while HAN concentrations decreased with distance, potentially because they were undergoing hydrolysis in the pipeline.

AbstractBackground: Infective endocarditis (IE) is an important cause of child morbidity and mortality, but the current burden of the disease in Thai children is unknown. Objectives: To determine the current burden of IE in Thai children.Patients and Methods: The records of all children aged <15 years admitted to Khon Kaen University Hospital from 1992 to 2011 were reviewed. Results: Of 69,822 admissions, 56 patients fulfilled the modified Duke criteria for definite IE giving a rate of 0.8 cases per 1,000 admissions. Age at diagnosis was 7.9 ± 3.8 years (range, 8 days to 14.8 years). There was congenital heart disease in 38 (68%) patients, rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in 10 (18%), and no previous heart disease in 8 (14%). RHD was a less frequent underlying disease during the latter half (2002-2011) of the period studied (1/34 vs. 9/22, P < 0.001). Blood cultures were positive for pathogens in 34 (61%) patients with 11 cases of Streptococcus viridians and 8 cases of Staphylococcus aureus infections. Vegetations on echocardiography were present in 46 (82%) patients. For 8 embolic events, patients with large vegetations had a higher rate (4/6) than patients with small and no vegetations (4/50) (P < 0.003). In-hospital mortality was 11%. Eight patients with S. aureus infection had a higher mortality (5/8) than 26 patients (1/26) infected with other pathogens (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The changing epidemiology of pediatric IE was toward fewer children with RHD. Mortality among children with IE was higher in those with S. aureus infection.

On December 4, 2016, Jatupat Boonpattararaksa, known by his nickname “Pai,” then a law student at Khon Kaen University in northeastern Thailand, was arrested and accused of violating Article 112 of the Thai Criminal Code, or defaming, insulting, or threatening the king, queen, heir-apparent, or regent. Two days prior, he had shared to Facebook a biography of the new king, Maha Vajiralongkorn, or Rama X, who became king following the death of his father, Bhumipol Adulyadej, Rama IX, on October 13, 2016. The BBC Thai biography was candid and highlighted Vajiralongkorn's string of wives, his four abandoned sons, and his conferral of a military rank on his pet dog, as well as his recent bike rides for charity (BBC Thai 2016). Over 2,600 people shared the BBC Thai link, but Pai was the only person to be arrested in December 2016 and the only person to be prosecuted to date (TLHR 2017a). The complaint that led to Pai's arrest was filed by Lieutenant Colonel Phitakphon Chusri, a Khon Kaen–based soldier who has followed him closely.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges experienced in teaching and learning Bahasa Indonesia for foreigners during covid-19 as well as to find out the strategies and solutions undertaken during online learning. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative using case study approach in Bahasa Indonesia course at Khon Kaen University. The subjects in this study were 3 teachers and 2 students of Bahasa Indonesia class. The finding shows some challenges of learning Bahasa Indonesia such as barriers in communication, the low ability of self-regulated learning owned by students, and the lack of control over the morals and behavior of students during distance learning. While, the solutions offered are still technology-based learning, making short videos as learning material to improve emotional relationships between students and teachers, reducing the level of difficulty and prioritize meaningful learning, and conducting multi-literacy learning. On the other hand, the techniques used are producing teachers' labs, conduct self-assessment as a reflection of self-regulated learning, and involving parents as substitutes for instructors in controlling values and morals. Self-regulated learning, as well as parental involvement, are extremely needed.

Abstract:
Background and Objective. Provocative factors are one causative factor of seizure attacks in persons with epilepsy (PWE). There are limited data of prevalence and major provocative factors in Asian populations.Methods. This study was performed at the Epilepsy Clinic, Khon Kaen University Hospital. The patients who aged 15 years or over, who had been treated at least 3 months with at least one antiepileptic drug, and who were followed up for at least one year were included. Data of seizure control and triggers were collected retrospectively from medical records. Data analysis was performed to identify independent provocative factors.Results. A total of 382 PWE met the study criteria. The mean age was40.4±0.8years. Approximately 44% of the patients had at least one provocative factor. By multivariate analysis, the independent provocative factors with the first three highest adjusted odds ratios were sleep deprivation (adjustedOR=8.64, 95% CI 3.73–19.99), alcohol consumption (adjustedOR=6.76, 95% CI 1.44–31.78), and feeling stressful (adjustedOR=2.97, 95% CI 1.29–6.86).Conclusion. Almost half of seizure attacks may be caused by provocative factors in Thai PWEs and some factors may be preventable. Avoidance of these factors should be emphasized to epilepsy patients for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of integrating resistant genotypes of Jerusalem artichoke with Trichoderma harzianum isolate T9 to control Alternaria leaf spot caused by Alternaria spp. under two fertilization regimes and to determine whether T9 application induced chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase activity in Jerusalem artichoke leaves. Six Jerusalem artichoke varieties (resistant varieties JA15, JA86, and JA116 and susceptible varieties HEL246, HEL293, and JA109) and three disease control methods (a non-inoculated control, application of T. harzianum T9, and fungicide sprays (propiconazole at a rate of 30 mL/20 L of water, 375 ppm)) was conducted in two separate trials (different fertilization regimes) at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand. Resistant genotypes controlled Alternaria leaf spot effectively. Application of Trichoderma showed low efficacy to control Alternaria leaf spot, but in specific susceptible genotypes—HEL246 and HEL293—the application of Trichoderma could reduce disease severity up to 10%. The application of Trichoderma was associated with a rise in production of chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase in HEL246 seedlings. The number of Trichoderma propagules in soil, as well as the extent of colonization of roots and leaves, were monitored. The results indicated that application of Trichoderma had higher propagules than non-inoculated control. Neither varietal resistance nor the disease control methods used in this study impacted the yield or yield components of Jerusalem artichoke.

Abstract:
AbstractBackground: Rheumatic fever (RF), rheumatic heart disease (RHD), and congenital heart disease (CHD) are still major problems among Thai school children. Objective: To examine trends in the prevalence of RF/RHD and CHD along with the socioeconomic status of school children in urban Khon Kaen, northeastern Thailand. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional survey of 8,555 school children aged 5-15 years from 4 schools in urban Khon Kaen from January to March 2006. Pediatric cardiologists examined the school children and all cardiac diagnoses were confirmed by echocardiography. Socioeconomic data were also collected. Schools were divided into high and low socioeconomic status (SES) schools, based on the prevailing levels of parental education and household income. All positive cases of heart disease were followed and reviewed at a university hospital up to December 2013.Results: Of 8,555 children examined, 2 had RF/RHD, and 10 had CHD. The prevalence of RF/RHD was 0.23 per 1,000 (95% CI 0.03-0.84), and the prevalence of CHD was 1.2 per 1,000 (95% CI 0.56-2.15). Prevalence of RF/RHD among urban school children in the center of northeastern Thailand had declined from 1.13 to 0.23 per 1,000 since 1986. The indices of socioeconomic development revealed marked improvement during this 20 year interim. The prevalence of RF/RHD was higher among low SES schools (4.6 per 1,000) compared with high SES schools (0 per 1,000).Conclusion: There is a low prevalence of RHD in school children in this region compared with the period before 1986.

Abstract:
This paper introduces an alternative approach of how to build the institutional repository, the multi-platform IR, for research institutes whose internal research units have existing IRs. Firstly, it describes the strategy of IR that harvests data from existing various-platform local repositories, allows researchers to manually input their publication data, provides administrative tool to manipulate the IR database, and includes output interface and search tool for end user. Then the program based on Drupal framework using real data from libraries of Khon Kaen University is provided to demonstrate the investigated strategy. The program perfectly performs all required tasks and could potentially be an example for future IRs of research institutes who would like to consolidate and aggregate existing local IRs.

Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses the diverse impacts of the Sinsai Roo Jai Ton research project based at Khon Kaen University from 2016 to 2019. Designed as a puppet performance by university students working with local artists in northeastern Thailand (Isan), the project inspired many other groups interested in making puppet performances by collaborating with local artists in Isan communities. Beyond collaborative performances, the project developed new interests in students who participated in the project and helped develop new types of teaching and learning, of research, and creating contemporary performances from artistic materials in local Isan communities such as narratives, stories, folk singing and playing music, murals, folk-dance, traditions and rituals, by using modern drama/theatre concepts and techniques as tools to find creative methods to present a new contemporary performance, to communicate new voices, ideas and aesthetics to audiences and to shape new modes of Isan identity.

Abstract:
Cyathus sp. isolates from three areas in Thailand (Khon Kaen University, Nam Nao National Park and Phu Ruea, Loei Province) were morphologically characterized by their peridiocarp, peridioles and basidiospores. This allowed to assign most isolates to five Cyathus species: C. berkeleyanus, C. earlei, C. pallidus, C. stercoreus and C. striatus. Phylogenetic analysis of ribosomal ITS sequence data yielded three groups of Cyathus isolates and unidentified species group. The Pallidum group including KKUNN1, is closely related to C. berkeleyanus (DQ463355.1), KKUITN2 (KU202745) and KKUITN3 (KU202751) are closely related to C. pallidus (DQ463356.1). The Ollum group includes C. africanus and C. hookeri. The Striatum group, such as KKUITP2 (KU202744) and KKUITP3 (KU202743) are closely related to C. stercoreus (DQ463356.1). The LSU sequence data suggest that KKULN2 and KKULN3 are closely related to C. pallidus (DQ463336.1), whereas KKULP2 and KKULP3 are closely related to C. stercoreus.

Abstract:
The study aims at appraising gender differences in health-related practices, and health behaviour among university students of the Khon Kaen University, northeast Thailand, using a self-administered questionnaire. Of 539 university students, there were 155 males, 384 females, with mean ages 19.7 (±1.2) and 19.6 (±1.1) years, respectively. Persistent health problems were not significantly different between male and female students (12.9% vs. 15.4%). An average body mass index (BMI) was significantly different between male and female students (20.2 ± 2.1 vs. 19.8 ± 2.1). Female students reported positive health habits, in terms of drinking, smoking, sun protection, tooth brushing, fruit consumption, conscious efforts to avoid fat and cholesterol, over men, while regular exercise and safety belt use were more likely practised among male students. Using ANOVA and pairwise multiple comparisons, female students demonstrated better health eating habits than men (p=0.0001). Coronary heart disease preventive habits between the medical and non-medical faculty was greater for female students than for male students (p=0.0006 for gender; p=0.0001 for faculty). Health behaviour (combination of health eating habits, deliberate nutritional practices and coronary heart diseases preventive behaviour) was found to be better practised among women than men (p= 0.0001). These findings, therefore, should focus attention on university students as a target group for health education.

Abstract:
Winged beans (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L.) DC.) are grown as a vegetable legume crop in Thailand. All parts of the plant, including pods, seeds, leaves, flowers, and tubers are edible and are rich in protein and nutrients. Although the major consumption of winged bean is based on pod and tuber yields, only the people of Myanmar and Indonesia utilize winged bean tubers as food materials. The usefulness of the winged bean as an alternative crop for staple food and feed can shed some light on the impact of winged bean. Therefore, the evaluation of the dual purpose of the winged bean based on pod tuber yields is the objective of this study. In this study, ten-winged bean accessions—six accessions obtained from introduced sources and four accessions obtained from local Thai varieties—were laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the Agronomy Field Crop Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand from September 2019 to April 2020 and from October 2020 to April 2021. Data, including total pod weight, number of pods, pod length, 10-pod weight, and tuber weight were recorded, and the proximate nutrient and mineral contents in the tubers were also determined. The results revealed that the principal effects of year (Y) and genotype (G) were significant for total pod weight and the number of pods. Moreover, the Y × G interactions were principal effects upon the total pod weights and tuber weights. The results indicated that superior genotype and appropriate environmental conditions are key elements in successful winged bean production for both pod and tuber yields. The winged bean accessions W099 and W018 were consistent in both experimental years for pod and tuber yields at 23.6 and 18.36 T/ha and 15.20 and 15.5 T/ha, respectively. Each accession also proved high in tuber protein content at 20.92% and 21.04%, respectively, as well as significant in fiber, energy, and minerals. The results suggest that the winged bean accessions W099 and W018 can be used for dual-purpose winged bean production in Thailand.
