The aim of the article is to highlight the evolution of ideas in Soviet and modern historiography on (non)perception of scientific traditions of the Kharkiv Imperial University by the Institute of Public Education named after O. O. Potebnya (KhIPE). Research methods: problematic-historiographic, historical-chronological, comparative-historical; principles of systematicity and objectivity. Main results and scientific novelty: for the first time it has been considered in detail how researchers assessments have changed from denying the necessity of mastering the old principles of higher education to the perception of the Kharkiv Institute of Public Education named after O. O. Potebnia as the heir of the pre-revolutionary university with partial preservation of traditions. The coverage in the historical thought of the 20s of the 20th and the beginning of the 19th century of problematic issues related to the establishment and operation of the KhIPE is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the diversity of opinions and assessments of the KhIPE perceptions of the traditions of the Kharkiv Imperial University. The authors concludes that the traditions of the Kharkiv University were partially preserved in the work of the KhIPE, thanks to the inherited material base, and most importantly, the preserve of the main teaching staff, employees and part of the pre-revolutionary students. In historical science the KhIPE’s estimation as successor to the Kharkiv University is unstable. Soviet authors focused mainly on the refusal of the leadership of the People’s Commissar of Education of the USRR and the IPE on the forms of the liquidated imperial university. Meanwhile, the contemporary authors, on the one hand, emphasize the voluntarism and failure of the educational reform and 1933 forced restoration of universities by the Soviet power. On the other hand, the idea that the tradition of the Imperial University was more than accepted until recently was considered to be in keeping with the KhIPE traditions. The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the most radical reform in the history of domestic universities, the consequences and historical significance of which cause lively discussions among experts. The practical significance of the article is to change the priorities in teaching and promoting the history of the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. The originality of the study is due to the unbiased consideration of a wide range of used historiographical sources (scientific works and journalism). Type of article: theoretical research.

The emergence and evolution of the symbolic space of Kharkiv, one of the largest university centres in Ukraine, represent changes in the urban cultural landscape and the urban narrative of memory. Here, the transformations of sign-space (ritual practices and symbolism) in Kharkiv’s institutions of higher education are traced from the first half of the nineteenth century to the present time. The genesis of sign-space in the city’s institutes of higher education is an example of the transfer of western European university ideas to eastern European terrain, and their further adaptation there. The functioning of sign-space is studied in the fifteen largest institutions of higher learning in Kharkiv today. University symbols and rituals define a system of views of the modern university, its functions, and its ideals. Building a university sign-space is also interpreted as a competition for the symbolic environment of the city in which it exists. In this way, institutions of higher education seek not only to be represented in the urban milieu, but also to promote the consolidation of a certain part of the surrounding urban community. Kharkiv’s symbolic space as a university city is tightly knit but heterogeneous, representing a complex system and comprising a wide variety of visual and verbal elements. The current forms of visual (self)representation of Kharkiv’s universities are a synthesis of local and borrowed academic traditions. The “commercialization” and “service function” of the modern university clash with the “old” ideals of Enlightenment, a conflict reflected in the symbolic and ritual forms perceived by the university community.

A comparative study of the biography of outstanding doctors and scientists brothers Alexander and Pavel Shumlyansky is presented. It is shown that they made a significant contribution to the development and improvement of higher medical education in the Russian Empire at the turn of the XVIII — XIX centuries. Their activities contributed to the transition from the training of doctors in hospital schools to the academic educational process, which created the basis for the formation of university schools. Oleksandr Shumlyansky developed, and Pavel took part in the implementation of the system of university higher medical education, becoming the first dean of the medical faculty of Kharkiv University.

The purpose of the study is to review the representation of the local and temporal plane of the image of the city in the newspapers of Kharkiv higher education institutions in the 1960–1980s. Th e study uses printed publications of three higher education institutions of Kharkiv – Kharkiv State University and Kharkiv Polytechnic and Aviation Institutes. The research methodology. The study of the temporal dimension of the image of the city is performed following the principles of historical urbanism and imagology. Symbolic markers of urban space have been analyzed using the method of mental mapping. Th e method of oral history has also been used in the study. Th e concept of the outstanding linguist Yu. Shevelyov, who singled out several images of Kharkiv that existed in diff erent periods of its history has come to be the matrix of the study of the temporal image of the city. The scientifi c novelty of the study is that the article explores the image of Kharkiv through the prism of printed publications of higher educational institutions of the city for the fi rst time. The study has discovered that the history of Kharkiv was covered in a rather biased way in the Soviet print media, and some events that were inconvenient for the ruling regime were completely silenced. The presentation of the history of the imperial period of Kharkiv is fully adapted to the Soviet historical concept, in which the vision of the past passes through the prism of class struggle. There is no mention of the Cossack origin of the city and the era of Ukrainization. Instead, the importance of key moments in Soviet history for Kharkiv’s development is emphasized: the establishment of Bolshevik rule and the liberation of the city from the Nazi occupation in 1943. Kharkiv appears to newspaper readers as a largely industrial city and as a center of science and educationaft erwards. Th e brand of Kharkiv is much less mentioned as a city of students and youth. Kharkiv’s urban names are completely dominated by the names of Soviet party fi gures, participants in the struggle against the Nazi occupation, who were not always associated with the city’s past. In general, the mental map of Kharkiv in the pages of periodicals of Kharkiv higher education institutions depicts the city through the prism of Soviet fi gures, values, and symbols. Instead, there is almost no trace of urbanonyms that would be related to Kharkiv’s history. Conclusions. Th rough the prism of the Soviet view, the symbolic space of the city and the idea of its past, relevant to contemporaries, appear on the pages of periodicals of Kharkiv higher education institutions. Th e image of the city disseminated in periodicals served as a repeater of the Soviet vision of history and, in general, contributed to the education of Soviet values in thestudent environment. Modern for readers, Kharkiv looked like an industrial-scientifi c, purely Soviet, denationalized city, the names of objects and monuments of which refl ect mainly the Soviet worldview.

210-th anniversary of Kharkiv University foundation with its medical faculty passed into history. The community is always highly interested in the history of anniversaries because of the “milestones”. Issues of their origin and roots are particularly interesting. Kharkiv University Consortium was created and each member of the consortium tends to define its historical place in a single university space established in the city. As known the collection of finds from Alexandropol Kurgan was stored in the Commission for the Study of Antiquities (St. Petersburg) which was reorganized in the Imperial Archaeological Commission in 1859, and at the same time collection was given to the Hermitage. In 1932 by decision of the Parity Commission items from this barrow were transferred to the Ukrainian History Museum (now the M. F. Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum). The small part of collection was left in the Hermitage for electroplating. During World War II, the Kharkiv’s part of collection became almost negligible, so from more than 4000 finds more than 100 items were survived. After the war part of the collection (about 400 items) kept in the collections of the Archeological Museum of Kharkiv University. All past documentation was lost during the war. In the new inventory books, compiled after the war, the items were marked as numbers 74—88 under the year of receipt 1945. Any notes on the possible reasons for transferring things to university storage are absent. The collection of Alexandropol kurgan stored in the Archeological Museum of Kharkiv Karazin national university consists of the 165 round six-petal plaques, 120 seven-petal plaques, 19 round plaques with four holes along the edge, one (and one fragment) round plaque with six holes, 9 bronze crescent pendants, 12 bronze fragments of the ends of crescent and 19 small fragments from them, 64 tubular pierces (intact and in fragments), 7 silver plaques depicting the griffin and the fragment of silver typeset belt. Full publication of Alexandropol artifacts from the Kharkiv collection would make this complex appropriate to recreate the complete picture of the burial of Scythian chieftain and increase the further development of Scythian studies.

Despite the fact that Ilya Mechnikov was a zoologist, his contribution to the development of medicine is invaluable. The article reveals the details of the biography of this scientist, indicating the fact that his path to medicine was not accidental and began even earlier than his passion for zoology. Also, the article concerns the problem of the role of the Kharkiv University in the formation of Mechnikov as a scientist. Despite the wellknown assertion that this great scientist was self-taught and paved his own way to success in science, for he did not have sufficient resources to show his talents at a provincial university, the authors come to the conclusion that the biographies of Mechnikov’s contemporaries in Kharkiv demonstrate the opposite. Namely, that there were enough resources for young scientists at the Kharkiv University to fulfill their scientific ambitions, however, a series of certain circumstances did not allow the young Mechnikov to take full advantage of all opportunities he could have had in Kharkiv.

The growth, development, selection structure, and condition of Turkish hazelnut in the plantations of the parks of the Kharkiv National Agrarian University were studied in conditions of Kharkiv region. The article analyzes the growth of 22 to 40 years old Turkish hazelnut trees by height and diameter on five sites. In all cases, the hazelnut trees considerably exceeded the oaks by diameter and were slightly behind by the height. The Turkish hazelnut stands had a good selection structure and condition. An integrated approach to assessing the selection value of stands was used. Three of the five observed stands were found to be perspective by a combination of characteristics, i. e. suitable for the forest planting, protective stands creation, and landscaping. In all the surveyed plots, the trees produced viable seeds and seedlings and had a high degree of acclimatization in the Kharkov region.

The article is devoted to the memory of Yu.R. Penskii, a famous surgeon and clinician of the late 19th — early 20th century and the last dean of Kharkiv University, who made a significant contribution to the development of the higher medical school in Kharkiv.

The article analyses the problem of reducing the rating of natural sciences in youth. Possible options for solving this issue are considered. Based on the experience of young scientists of the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" (NTU "KhPI"), it is indicated on perspective directions of interaction between higher education and secondary school in order to increase the popularity of natural and technical sciences. One of the points of contact can be the foundation of a creative space for children, which will be the focus of STEM education, and promote a positive image of the natural and technical sciences.

In the work reviewed the little-known pages of life of the assistant professor of Kharkiv Imperial University. University, Professor of Kharkiv Higher Female Studies V. Kh. Davats. In particular, the scientific and teaching activities at the Kharkiv University and life in emigration are described. Particular attention is paid to the works of V. X. Davats on the history of the white movement.

The results of public opinion survey of Kharkiv region residents on public safety and trust in law enforcement conducted by Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs (Research Lab on Crime Enforcement) together with the Sociological Association of Ukraine, Kharkiv Regional State Administration and the Main Directorate of the National Police are presented. in the Kharkiv region in 2013–2021. The key indicators of the efficiency of law enforcement agencies of Kharkiv region and the problems of law enforcement activities at the local level from the public point of view are analyzed, the expectations of local residents from law enforcement agencies are determined, the problems of interaction with the police are considered. The publication contains empirical data and practical recommendations designed to implement specific tasks in the work of the police and other law enforcement agencies for the needs of the local community.

The results of sociological monitoring of the spread of addictive behavior among young people in Kharkiv "Youth and Drugs" and the results of the student module of Ukrainian Longitudinal study (ULS+) are presented. The "Youth and Drugs" study conducted since 1995 by the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs together with the Sociological Association of Ukraine with the support of the Department of Science and Education of Kharkiv Regional State Administration. The key indicators of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and misuse among young people, the prevalence of gambling, computer and Internet use, the structure of youth leisure, bullying, suicidal behavior, mental and behavioral disorders, etc. were analyzed. For educators, law enforcement, physicians, scientists and anyone interested in the prevention of addictive behavior.

The monograph reflects the problems of Russian psycholinguistics from the moment of its inception in Russia to the present day and presents its main directions that are currently developing. In addition, theoretical developments and practical results obtained in the framework of different directions and research centers are described in a concise form. The task of the book is to reflect, as far as it is possible in one edition, firstly, the history of the formation of Russian psycholinguistics; secondly, its methodology and developed methods; thirdly, the results obtained in different research centers and directions in different regions of Russia; fourthly, to outline the main directions of the further development of Russian psycholinguistics. There is no doubt that in the theoretical, methodological and applied aspects, the main problems and the results of their development by Russian psycholinguistics have no analogues in world linguistics and psycholinguistics, or are represented by completely original concepts and methods. We have tried to show this uniqueness of the problematics and the methodological equipment of Russian psycholinguistics in this book. The main role in the formation of Russian psycholinguistics was played by the Moscow psycholinguistic school of A.A. Leontyev. It still defines the main directions of Russian psycholinguistics. Russian psycholinguistics (the theory of speech activity - TSA) is based on the achievements of Russian psychology: a cultural-historical approach to the analysis of mental phenomena L.S. Vygotsky and the system-activity approach of A.N. Leontyev. Moscow is the most "psycholinguistic region" of Russia - INL RAS, Moscow State University, Moscow State Linguistic University, RUDN, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Sechenov University, Moscow State University and other Moscow universities. Saint Petersburg psycholinguists have significant achievements, especially in the study of neurolinguistic problems, ontolinguistics. The most important feature of Russian psycholinguistics is the widespread development of psycholinguistics in the regions, the emergence of recognized psycholinguistic research centers - St. Petersburg, Tver, Saratov, Perm, Ufa, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Kursk, Chelyabinsk; psycholinguistics is represented in Cherepovets, Ivanovo, Volgograd, Vyatka, Kaluga, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Abakan, Maikop, Barnaul, Ulan-Ude, Yakutsk, Syktyvkar, Armavir and other cities; in Belarus - Minsk, in Ukraine - Lvov, Chernivtsi, Kharkov, in the DPR - Donetsk, in Kazakhstan - Alma-Ata, Chimkent. Our researchers work in Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, China, France, Switzerland. There are Russian psycholinguists in Canada, USA, Israel, Austria and a number of other countries. All scientists from these regions and countries have contributed to the development of Russian psycholinguistics, to the development of psycholinguistic theory and methods of psycholinguistic research. Their participation has not been forgotten. We tried to present the main Russian psycholinguists in the Appendix - in the sections "Scientometrics", "Monographs and Manuals" and "Dissertations", even if there is no information about them in the Electronic Library and RSCI. The principles of including scientists in the scientometric list are presented in the Appendix. Our analysis of the content of the resulting monograph on psycholinguistic research in Russia allows us to draw preliminary conclusions about some of the distinctive features of Russian psycholinguistics: 1. cultural-historical approach to the analysis of mental phenomena of L.S.Vygotsky and the system-activity approach of A.N. Leontiev as methodological basis of Russian psycholinguistics; 2. theoretical nature of psycholinguistic research as a characteristic feature of Russian psycholinguistics. Our psycholinguistics has always built a general theory of the generation and perception of speech, mental vocabulary, linked specific research with the problems of ontogenesis, the relationship between language and thinking; 3. psycholinguistic studies of speech communication as an important subject of psycholinguistics; 4. attention to the psycholinguistic analysis of the text and the development of methods for such analysis; 5. active research into the ontogenesis of linguistic ability; 6. investigation of linguistic consciousness as one of the important subjects of psycholinguistics; 7. understanding the need to create associative dictionaries of different types as the most important practical task of psycholinguistics; 8. widespread use of psycholinguistic methods for applied purposes, active development of applied psycholinguistics. The review of the main directions of development of Russian psycholinguistics, carried out in this monograph, clearly shows that the direction associated with the study of linguistic consciousness is currently being most intensively developed in modern Russian psycholinguistics. As the practice of many years of psycholinguistic research in our country shows, the subject of study of psycholinguists is precisely linguistic consciousness - this is a part of human consciousness that is responsible for generating, understanding speech and keeping language in consciousness. Associative experiments are the core of most psycholinguistic techniques and are important both theoretically and practically. The following main areas of practical application of the results of associative experiments can be outlined. 1. Education. Associative experiments are the basis for constructing Mind Maps, one of the most promising tools for systematizing knowledge, assessing the quality, volume and nature of declarative knowledge (and using special techniques and skills). Methods based on smart maps are already widely used in teaching foreign languages, fast and deep immersion in various subject areas. 2. Information search, search optimization. The results of associative experiments can significantly improve the quality of information retrieval, its efficiency, as well as adaptability for a specific person (social group). When promoting sites (promoting them in search results), an associative experiment allows you to increase and improve the quality of the audience reached. 3. Translation studies, translation automation. An associative experiment can significantly improve the quality of translation, take into account intercultural and other social characteristics of native speakers. 4. Computational linguistics and automatic word processing. The results of associative experiments make it possible to reveal the features of a person's linguistic consciousness and contribute to the development of automatic text processing systems in a wide range of applications of natural language interfaces of computer programs and robotic solutions. 5. Advertising. The use of data on associations for specific words, slogans and texts allows you to predict and improve advertising texts. 6. Social relationships. The analysis of texts using the data of associative experiments makes it possible to assess the tonality of messages (negative / positive moods, aggression and other characteristics) based on user comments on the Internet and social networks, in the press in various projections (by individuals, events, organizations, etc.) from various social angles, to diagnose the formation of extremist ideas. 7. Content control and protection of personal data. Associative experiments improve the quality of content detection and filtering by identifying associative fields in areas subject to age restrictions, personal information, tobacco and alcohol advertising, incitement to ethnic hatred, etc. 8. Gender and individual differences. The data of associative experiments can be used to compare the reactions (and, in general, other features of thinking) between men and women, different social and age groups, representatives of different regions. The directions for the further development of Russian psycholinguistics from the standpoint of the current state of psycholinguistic science in the country are seen by us, first of all:  in the development of research in various areas of linguistic consciousness, which will contribute to the development of an important concept of speech as a verbal model of non-linguistic consciousness, in which knowledge revealed by social practice and assigned by each member of society during its inculturation is consolidated for society and on its behalf;  in the expansion of the problematics, which is formed under the influence of the growing intercultural communication in the world community, which inevitably involves the speech behavior of natural and artificial bilinguals in the new object area of psycholinguistics;  in using the capabilities of national linguistic corpora in the interests of researchers studying the functioning of non-linguistic and linguistic consciousness in speech processes;  in expanding research on the semantic perception of multimodal texts, the scope of which has greatly expanded in connection with the spread of the Internet as a means of communication in the life of modern society;  in the inclusion of the problems of professional communication and professional activity in the object area of psycholinguistics in connection with the introduction of information technologies into public practice, entailing the emergence of new professions and new features of the professional ethos;  in the further development of the theory of the mental lexicon (identifying the role of different types of knowledge in its formation and functioning, the role of the word as a unit of the mental lexicon in the formation of the image of the world, as well as the role of the natural / internal metalanguage and its specificity in speech activity);  in the broad development of associative lexicography, which will meet the most diverse needs of society and cognitive sciences. The development of associative lexicography may lead to the emergence of such disciplines as associative typology, associative variantology, associative axiology;  in expanding the spheres of applied use of psycholinguistics in social sciences, sociology, semasiology, lexicography, in the study of the brain, linguodidactics, medicine, etc. This book is a kind of summarizing result of the development of Russian psycholinguistics today. Each section provides a bibliography of studies on the relevant issue. The Appendix contains the scientometrics of leading Russian psycholinguists, basic monographs, psycholinguistic textbooks and dissertations defended in psycholinguistics. The content of the publications presented here is convincing evidence of the relevance of psycholinguistic topics and the effectiveness of the development of psycholinguistic problems in Russia.

Abstract The principles of quality assurance of higher education are considered in the work. The analysis of aspects of quality assurance of the educational process of higher technical education on the example of Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics is given. Measures to develop a quality system of higher education at the university level are proposed as well. Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack) is a promising cereal crop that has a number of economically valuable properties that are absent in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The research was conducted at Uman National University of Horticulture (Ukraine) in a long-term stationary experiment, founded in 1964. The aim of the work was to study the influence of long-term application of different fertilizer systems (mineral, organic and organo-mineral) on the yield and grain quality of spring triticale. It has been established that in the conditions of high air temperature and soil moisture deficit, mineral and organo-mineral fertilizer systems have an advantage. In sufficient wet conditions, all studied fertilizer systems are highly efficient. Spring triticale (Kharkiv Hlibodar variety) has a high reaction to fertilizers, as grain yield increases from 6.3–6.6 to 9.0–9.5 t ha-1 (р≤0.05). Mineral and organo-mineral fertilizer systems have the greatest effect on protein content. In conditions of sufficient moisture, all levels of mineral and organo-mineral fertilizer systems significantly increase the protein content in spring triticale grain. In arid conditions, saturation of crop rotation area with N90P90K90 (M2), N135P135K135 (M3) and Manure 9 t +N46P68K36 (OM2), Manure 13.5 t + N69P102K54 (OM3) is preferred. It should be noted that spring triticale is quite reactive with fertilizers, as the protein content increases from 13.2–14.0 to 15.2–16.0% (р≤0.05) depending on the fertilizer system. The high influence of fertilizer system and year factors on yield and protein content in triticale grain has been established. It should be noted that spring triticale grain yield varies most from the weather conditions of the growing season.

This paper reveals the process of creating a career guidance 3D quest game for applicants who aim to apply for IT departments. The game bases on 3D model of computer science and information technologies department in the National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute”. The quest challenges aim to assess the digital competency level of the applicants and first- year students. The paper features leveraged software tools, development stages, implementation challenges, and the gaming application scenario. The game scenario provides for a virtual tour around a department of the 3D university. As far as the game replicates the real-life objects, applicants can see the department's equipment and class-rooms. For the gaming application development team utilized С# and C++, Unity 3D, and Source Engine. For object modeling, we leveraged Hammer Editor, Agisoft PhotoScan Pro, and the photogrammetry technology, that allowed for realistic gameplay. Players are offered various formats of assessment of digital competencies: test task, puzzle, assembling a computer and setting up an IT-specialist workplace. The experiment conducted at the open house day proved the 3D quest game efficiency. The results of digital competence evaluation do not depend on the testing format. The applicants mostly preferred to take a 3D quest, as more up-to-date and attractive engagement.

Rapid development of modern technology and its increasing complexity make high demands to the quality of training of its users. Among others, an important class is vehicles, both civil and military. In the teaching of associated subjects, the accepted hierarchy of teaching aids includes common visual aids (posters, videos, scale models etc.) on the first stage, followed by simulators ranging in complexity, and finished at real vehicles. It allows achieving some balance between cost and efficiency by partial replacement of more expensive and elaborated aids with the less expensive ones. However, the analysis of teaching experience in the Military Institute of Armored Forces of National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (Institute) reveals that the balance is still suboptimal, and the present teaching aids are still not enough to allow efficient teaching. This fact raises the problem of extending the range of available teaching aids for vehicle-related subjects, which is the aim of the work. Benefiting from the modern information and visualization technologies, we present a new teaching aid that constitutes a spherical (360° or 3D) photographic panorama and a Virtual Reality (VR) device. The nature of the aid, its potential applications, limitations and benefits in comparison to the common aids are discussed. The proposed aid is shown to be cost-effective and is proved to increase efficiency of training, according to the results of a teaching experiment that was carried out in the Institute. For the implementation, a tight collaboration between the Institute and an IT company “Innovative Distance Learning Systems Limited” was established. A series of panoramas, which are already available, and its planned expansions are presented. The authors conclude that the proposed aid may significantly improve the cost-efficiency balance of teaching a range of technology subjects.

The technology of the automated pedagogical diagnostics is analysed. The testing strategy, oriented for pedagogical diagnostics purpose, and grading algorithm, which corresponds to Ukrainian school grading standards, are suggested. "Expert 3.05”software for automated pedagogical testing is designed. The methods of administration of the database of the test items are proposed. Some tests on the mathematical topics are prepared with "Expert 3.05". The approbation of these tests in the educational process of Kharkov National Pedagogical University named after G.S.Skovoroda is analysed.
