Duncan, Helen. "Prioritisation of proactive sewer maintenance using serviceability as a key performance indicator." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2073.

Full text
Abstract:
In sewerage asset management, there has been a concerted move away from primarily assessing system capacity, to focus on 'serviceability' as a key performance indicator. In the UK, water regulators have imposed an expectation on water companies to significantly lower the risk posed to customer serviceability from the sewerage industry. Proactive maintenance is the main vehicle by which asset managers aim to achieve this outcome. This thesis outlines the development of a methodology which ranks network pipes in order of risk to serviceability. The tool is base on the Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) principle that risk is a function of failure consequence and likelihood and in exception to other recently developed tools, this method focuses the analysis towards data which is readily available within the industry and aims to avoid data where reliability is in doubt, such as records of past events. The tool consists of an initial screening process to eliminate those pipes which are at a significantly reduced likelihood of flooding before each remaining pipe is scored according to various factors which affect consequence and likelihood of flooding. Final risk scores, and therefore rankings are then achieved through the combination of consequence and likelihood scores. Appropriate scores and weightings have been achieved through customer research, discussion with industry representatives and the completion of an additional study into trends in failure likelihood. The methodology is a decision support tool developed to aid sewerage asset managers in their role in balancing risk to customer serviceability against cost of intervention, by providing a measure of risk which is not dependent on poor quality data.

Yafele, Aylwin. "Key performance indicator disclosures by large UK private and public listed companies." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2012. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/20762/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the degree of compliance by large UK private and public listed companies with the Companies Act 2006 section 417 (6) requirement to disclose KPIs in their annual reports. Specifically, the study investigates the extent of KPI disclosures by 410 UK companies comprising the largest 205 private limited and largest 205 public listed companies. The study also examines whether corporate governance mechanisms and company specific characteristics influence the extent of KPI disclosures in the annual reports of these companies. The extent of KPI disclosures in this study is measured using three indices to quantify KPI disclosures. Some hypotheses for the independent variables were developed and tested using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression method to determine whether corporate governance and company specific characteristics are associated with the extent of KPIs disclosure by private, public listed and the pooled companies. In terms of the extent of disclosure, the results suggest that approximately 51% of private companies and 90% of public listed companies disclose at least one KPI in their annual reports. The OLS regression results indicate that corporate governance mechanisms (proportion of non-executive directors, board size and director share ownership) and company specific characteristics (company size and profitability) are significantly associated with the extent of KPI disclosures by private, public listed and the pooled companies. The frequency of board meetings and multinationality do not significantly explain disclosure extent and comprehensiveness. The overall conclusion of this research is that private companies do not seem to comply with the requirements to disclose KPIs and that corporate governance mechanisms are important in ensuring compliance with the requirement to disclose KPIs. The results have important implications for policy makers and accounting regulators such as the Accounting Standards Board in general, and in particular the Financial Reporting Review Panel (FRRP) which is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that large private and public listed companies comply with extant regulatory framework.

Hamwi, Tayfe Built Environment Faculty of Built Environment UNSW. "The performance measurement of healthcare facility management: A way forward." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Built Environment, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43637.

Full text
Abstract:
Facilities management is emerging rapidly as a distinct and critical field of study and professional practice for all sectors of the economy. In the past it has tended to be regarded as a service function and subsumed within other areas such as engineering, the built environment and business management. The health sector is an important part of the overall FM industry because it represents a driver of capital works that is both extensive and expensive. The health sector building requirements are growing, demand regular maintenance and upgrading, and are critical to core business. An extensive literature review revealed that there has been minimal published research into the development and implementation of a central feature of effective FM, namely, performance management. Performance management provides the primary evaluation and planning tool for FM, in that it identifies the performance indicators that are meaningful to FM and core business, provides measures for those indicators and enables projective planning and benchmarking to be undertaken. This research study assesses the possibility of developing a comprehensive performance measurement system for FM in the healthcare sector. The research has two main aims: - To identify the knowledge gaps in current FM performance measurement systems in general, and for the healthcare sector in particular. - To investigate the possibility of benchmarking FM performance across the healthcare sector using a weighted assessment across all categories of performance. In order to meet the research purpose and data collection requirements from the relatively limited number of FM experts who specialise in the health sector, the research methodology employs a combination of a case study approach as an exploratory tool, and a phenomenological approach as the main qualitative design. In achieving the aims and objectives, this research helps in improving FM practice in the healthcare sector through: - Providing facility managers with a comprehensive study which highlights the achievements and knowledge gaps in FM and its performance measurement - Providing top management with a study for the effectiveness of developing decision support strategy to make effective and efficient changes to their facility management practices - Facilitate the implementation of benchmarking techniques in the health sector, in order to improve the performance of the healthcare sector FM over time. The study concludes that developing aggregate/collective KPIs for each performance measurement category of possible measure (social/quality, financial, environmental, functional, and technical) is feasible. However, before being able to develop and implement that approach an improvement to the current FM practices is required. The improvement can be achieved via either a voluntarily or compulsory commitment from top management towards FM in the organizations. This commitment should be implemented with an appropriate hierarchy from the bottom to the top. The key components include: establishing the contribution of FM to the success of the overall business in financial terms; setting agreed FM objectives; deriving meaningful general KPIs; defining the data required for each KPI; establishing the system for collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data; and conducting the benchmarking process for continual improvement.

Widerståhl, Christopher. "Effektiv försvarslogistik?" Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Logistik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-110679.

Full text
Abstract:
The Swedish Defence Materiel (Försvarets Materielverk -FMV) faces a major redirection of its activities with an associated with reorganization. The new business is to deliver Defense Logistics Services to the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten - FM). There is no existing Swedish definition for the term Defense Logistics. One purpose of this study has been to provide a proposed definition. FMV also requires a procedure for identifying relevant measurements, Key Performance Indicators (KPI), for arbitrary defense logistics systems, which can indicate whether the Defense Logistics Services delivered are effective or not.   In order to create a definition, the first step in this study is has been to examine what the theory says about methods for crafting definitions. There implied a need for a large literature review, with the purpose of identifying how and what other organizations, business and theories relate to and how they use the term of Defense Logistics. The information from the literature review was used as inspirational input when applying the improvements method, which is one of the methods available when crafting definitions.   The second purpose of this study has been to develop a procedure for identifying KPI:s related to Defense Logistics. This was also solved by a large literature review that identified existing logistical measurements and explained what KPI:s are and how they are used. The above logistical measurements together with measurements developed and derived from the definition were used to form a "comprehensive list" of possible Performance Indicators (PI).   During the design of the procedure it was recognized that it was not feasible to create a generic method for every possible defense logistic system. It was therefore proposed, as future work is, to categorize systems with similar characteristics into system types. With e.g. total cost analysis and other empirical experience as a basis, KPI can be chosen for each system type and thereby forming "net lists" for each generic system type. If the part interested in measuring a defense logistics service is interested in further narrowing the "net list" of KPI, a couple of questions are provided to assist in this, based on the concerns of the interest party.

Singh, Karmjit. "A framework for sustainability performance assessment for manufacturing processes." Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2019. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/169827.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainable manufacturing methods make it possible to develop products in ways which minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and save natural resources whilst being economically sound. The concepts of sustainability in manufacturing being are still fairly broad, in scope, and need to be more focused and firmly established at the process, machine or factory levels. This project proposes a structure for manufacturing with a main objective to develop a sustainability framework which encompasses various production processes. Structured information models for the seamless flow of information across the design and manufacturing domains, for selected manufacturing processes, are defined. The thesis work identifies key performance indicators (KPIs) for the assessment of manufacturing sustainability and performs analysis of selected unit manufacturing processes and their sub-processes with the aim of proposing a methodology for determining science-based measurements of the manufacturing processes affecting these KPIs. The theoretical foundations established are then used to develop a model that could evaluate sustainability of selected manufacturing processes and their respective process plans providing a basis for inter-process comparison and selection of the most sustainable process plan. The proposed framework is presented in form of a manufacturing planning computer-based package which is designed to to consider different influencing factors such as product information, part geometry, material related physical and processing properties and the manufacturing equipment operating data. The thesis presents a number of case studies which have been published in international journals. The case studies present estimates of the manufacturing sustainability KPIs for a number of production methods. These estimates have been verified with available shop floor data. The work in the thesis makes it possible to establish manufacturing industry equipped to deal the challenges of the future when sustainability will be the major factor up on which the quality of success will be determined.

Shamsaei, Azalia. "Indicator-based Policy Compliance of Business Processes." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23476.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Business process compliance management has recently attracted a lot of attention in both business and academia as it enables organizations to not only control and monitor their business processes from a legal point of view but also to avoid financial penalties and undesirable consequences to their reputation. Objective: This thesis aims to provide a framework that would enable organizations to: 1- Discover business processes that violate regulations, laws and policies; 2- Discover the importance level of business processes based on the organization’s goals; 3- Determine the impact of compliance-related process modifications on business goals, including conflicting goals between stakeholders, and on policies; and 4- Enable organizations to measure the level of business process compliance for one or multiple policies. Methodology: A systematic literature review in the area of goal-oriented business process compliance management and measurement has been conducted, which showed that balancing legal compliance obligations with business objectives remains a difficult challenge. A new Indicator-based Policy Compliance Framework (IPCF), which combines policy and rule models together with models capturing business goals (with their relative importance to the organization) and business processes, has been proposed. This framework builds on the User Requirements Notation (URN), which is the first international standard to combine goal modeling with scenario modeling. The intents and objectives of policies have been modeled, as well as the goals and business processes of organizations, and indicators are used to measure the compliance level of policies. This enables the detection of non-compliant business processes and the evaluation of the impact of compliance-related process modifications on business goals. Human resource policies and business processes are used as an example to illustrate the method. Aerodrome security regulations and business processes are then used to validate the method in a real-life environment. Comparisons to related work, evaluation against different sets of criteria, and tool support complement the framework validation. Results: The Indicator-based Policy Compliance Framework enables organizations to discover business processes that violate policies as well as other types of rules, regulations, and laws. Guidelines for modeling legal text with URN’s Goal-oriented Requirement Language (GRL) are proposed. Furthermore, IPCF helps determine the impact of compliance-related process modifications on business goals, including conflicting goals between stakeholders, and on policies. In addition, as policies sometimes apply differently to different types of organizations, a new profile for GRL, with suitable stereotypes, well-formedness constraints, and a modified analysis algorithm defined for GRL model families is used to evaluate the satisfaction level of individual goal models that are members of a larger family model. Finally, the proposed IPCF enables organizations to measure the level of business process compliance for one or multiple policies, and such measures can be visualized directly in URN models but also through interactive Business Intelligence portals, for a wider diffusion.

Devenish-Meares, Peter. "A strategic analysis of the performance of the telephone banking channel." University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Business, 2003. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001421/.

Full text
Abstract:
The telephone-banking channel, delivered through call centres, has become an integral part of the distribution mix of retail financial institutions. To get the greatest competitive advantage from this channel, the strategic orientation, structural and behavioural aspects of the call centre must be aligned with its operational-service and sales-performance objectives. Unfortunately, while considerable managerial effort is expended developing call centres, often their performance results remain uncertain or uncommunicated. There are indications also that financial institutions should not underestimate active market orientation benefits; innovative, strategic-thinking and progressive structures; flexible, empathic leadership, and, valuing supportive human resource strategies. Our survey of Australian deposit-taking institutions investigates the extent to which strategic and behavioural aspects are aligned with its operational-service and sales-performance objectives. Specifically, managerial approaches to IT development, competitive positioning, leadership delegation, market research attitudes and product orientation were considered. Approaches to trust, conflict, morale and reward, and, key performance indicator (KPI) choices were sought also. Results show sales performance is positively related to more externally focussed strategic orientations. Reinforcing the importance of innovative human resource practices, performance is also related positively to psychosocial climate in general and employee reward and morale, in particular. This extension of management theory urges financial service leaders to actively contemplate one of its most important resources, people. Further, the survey itself indicated that while the majority of institutions continue to use operationally based key performance indicators, such as minimum call duration, the ability of the call centre to generate sales revenue is also being recognised. In summary, given the size and potential of the telephone-banking channel, this research encourages further, urgent exploration of strategic relationships among the channel, its market, performance measures and comprehensive people-centred HR strategies aimed at developing high employee trust, and satisfaction.

This work consists of an analysis of the automotive sector in Portugal in the years 2019 and 2020 and the consequences of the pandemic, through the construction of a Dashboard that allows companies in the sector to quickly and effectively analyse the data without having to process them. In addition, it enables companies to analyse their performance through graphs and tables. This Dashboard is built with data from the MotorData platform, which belongs to the Portuguese Automobile Trade Association, ACAP, which has represented for over 100 years the entire national automotive sector. This analysis overcomes the previous problem of only being available to companies the information on the number of monthly registrations by brands. With this work companies are not only able to see the number of registrations by brand, models, type of energy and segment, but also to know their performance in the market. An analysis of the data obtained in MotorData for the pandemic period was also carried out and it was concluded, for instance, that the lockdown was responsible for 49% reduction on the sale of light vehicles.

Abstract:
A problem that is prevalent for testers at Ericsson is that performance test results are continuously generated but not analyzed. The time between occurrence of problems and information about the occurrence is long and variable. This is due to the manual analysis of log files that is time consuming and tedious. The requested solution is automation with an algorithm that analyzes the performance and notifies when problems occur. A binary classifier algorithm, based on statistical methods, was developed and evaluated as a solution to the stated problem. The algorithm was evaluated with simulated data and produced an accuracy of 97.54 %, to detect trend breaks. Furthermore, correlation analysis was carried out between performance and hardware to gain insights in how hardware configurations affect test runs.

Westerdahl, Robert, and Martin Yngemo.

Abstract:
The goal of this master thesis is to supply management at Saab Aeronautics with information and tools that allow for fast and effective insight into the manufacturing process. Additionally it aims to suggest improvements concerning measurements and the use of data for the internal workshops. The method of creating good performance indicators will also be part of the deliverables to Saab for future use. The master thesis is based on Analytics for Management by Tanima Chowhury and Louise Sandén, an earlier master thesis which describes a method for generating KPI:s. Furthermore the master thesis intends to answer some research questions, these questions are based around how well Analytics for Management can be adapted to a large organization like Saab and an evaluation of their previously used KPI:s. The main changes to the method as described in Analytics for Management are regarding differences in the data collection and the addition of a fourth phase. The new fourth phase uses the output from the previous three phases that are described in Analytics for Management, to assess which KPI:s are most suitable for top managerial use. The first phase utilizesthe company vision and strategy, to create suitable tactical goals. In this project, this translates to the company strategy getting linked to goals set up for the internal workshops at Saab Aeronautics. After this, in the second phase, the goals are used to produce KPI:s for the workshops. The output of phase two is therefore the chosen KPI:s that have been confirmed with management. The third phase uses the KPI:s and aims to evaluate the measurement system to either improve it or create it, if nonexistent. This part has been intentionally reduced in this report due to complexity. The fourth phase, evaluates out which KPI:s should be selected and how they should be visualized to create a good overview for management. The main result or output of the master thesis report consists of two parts, the method of generating KPI:s and the actual generated KPI:s. The KPI:s created during the master thesis are very similar to the KPI:s previously used, but improved. This indicates that the previous KPI:s is use at Saab were up to standard. However, the underlying data and traceability was not. These results generate good value for the future and the findings underline an important area. However, according to the authors, the main value should consist of highlighting the defective underlying data and solutions created to solve the problem

Abstract:
In the information age, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are commonly used for business performance measurement in organizations; however there’s no single best way about how to implement KPIs, which means that a company can select any arbitrary suitable KPIs. The thesis will do research and investigations based on existing academic theory and a case study in an international logistic company. The research was aiming at helping organizations to develop and implement successful KPIs that are effective, complete, and aligned with their business strategy and which conforms to scientific theories for how KPIs can be implemented. I designed a framework which was combined with the critical factors of successful KPIs in the scientific theories, the framework was designed for helping companies diagnosing and improving the effectiveness, completeness and alignment of their KPIs. . The aim was fulfilled by successfully testing the proposed framework in a case study. The result from the case study shows that there was a gap between how the KPIs are used and the scientific theories of how they should be used. However the framework need to be further tested in future research for a general usefulness.

Abstract:
This research aims to contribute to the body of knowledge and advancement in the debates regarding 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM) vs. 'Best Fit'. The main objective of this research is to investigate PMS existing in the Department of Administration of Justice in Botswana. The research identifies gaps between 'Best Practice PMS (HRM) and PMS which currently exists in the department and suggests changes in order to reduce gaps between 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM) and PMS current practice. The research also explores the applicability of 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM) in the context of a developing country. According to the 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM) the core process entails observing the internal and extemal environment of an organisation, planning and designing a PMS, acting on the PMS and reviewing the PMS. The 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM) process, frameworks and PMS contextual factors were used to guide data collection and data analysis in this research. The department as selected because of its importance in Botswana regarding its responsibility for issues relating to the constitution, human rights, safety, reliability, stability, independence, impartiality, gaining confidence and respect inside and outside the country. This research aims to address some of the gaps identified in the literature reviewed. The literature revealed that most of the previous studies concentrated on the PMS and performance measurement systems in private organisations, particularly on PMS in the context of developed countries. This research adopted a single-case study approach in order to gain in-depth understanding regarding PMS existing in the case under investigation. Purposeful sampling technique was applied to select the department as case in the public sector in Botswana. Quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were used. The key findings from this research suggest that, to a certain degree, the department followed the PMS existing in the department was Key Performance Indicators (KPI), Based PMS. The major gaps identified in this research include the lack of integration of HR strategy into PMS and organisational vision, strategic goals and objectives not linked with team and individuals. Furthermore, the department used a 'Top-Down' approach to PMS. Although there were some strengths to KPI-Based PMS existing in the department, there were some departures from 'Best Practice' PMS (HRM). The research suggests that integration of a HRM strategy into PMS; linking department's vision, strategic goals with team and individuals; training and developing staff in PMS; a bottom-up approach to PMS and training and developing managers would enhance PMS in the department. Furthermore, improving communication, commitment, support and ownership by senior and middle managers in the department would strengthen the KPI-Based PMS. Since PMS is a new concept in Botswana, future research should further explore and inv estigate the usage and impact of PMS in the department and the public sector at large. Findings from this research have provided the context under which KPI-Based PMS could be applied. Though findings are specific to Department of Administration of Justice in Botswana, multiple case studies would further strengthen research regarding the applicability of a KPI Based PMS in the context of a developing country.

Abstract:
This study investigates different ways to use Microsoft SharePoint to publish data in the form of charts and tables from a software system as a part of a business intelligence effort. The purpose is to provide accurate and up-to-date statistics automatically on a corporate website instead of manually creating it. An application was developed to serve as middleware between the SharePoint server and the data source. Different options were analyzed, both client-side and server-side components. It was found that using the SharePoint .NET client API is an efficient way to achieve this goal, especially in an IT environment where development of SharePoint server-side components isn’t a viable option due to IT security concerns. The study describes a way to initiate a small-scale BI implementation without large budgets or firm commitments in the organization. It uses a web collaboration tool that is common in larger businesses and shows a way to interface in-house developed data sources. What SharePoint API to use was restricted from a IT security and stability standpoint in this thesis. This restriction is likely to apply also on other larger organizations where a similar initiative is driven from outside the IT department. It was found that automating the generation of production reports could save significant time compared to manually creating them.

Abstract:
The overall objective of the study is to plan and recommend the most appropriate city environment that can foster the dynamic interactions necessary to implement sustainable and adaptable smart city projects for the purpose of enhancing the quality of the natural environment. Specific research approaches have been applied to answer the separate research questions, which is a performance indicator approach combined with a literature review. The Smart City level of Tshwane is measured, and it is further analysed how this contributes towards environmental sustainability on a city level. Even though environmental issues persist in the City of Tshwane, it was observed that there exists a direct correlation between smart city implementations and the improvement of environmental sustainability, from international examples. It is thus evident from the study that smart city initiatives applied in all city activities facilitate the enhancement of resource efficiency within a city. This ultimately contributes to improving the environmental performance, quality, liveability and sustainability within the cityscape. In order to achieve this, the Smart City level of a city needs to be measured and evaluated to establish a baseline supported by existing data to best inform an integrated approach in planning and implementation procedures (Bosch, et al., 2017). Smart city technologies and implementations create the setting for possible significant changes towards environmental sustainability. Key Terms: City of Tshwane, Smart City, ICT, environmental sustainability, environmental performance, evaluation, EUROCITIES CITYkeys’ Key Performance Indicator Framework, Key Performance Indicators, city-level, and literature review.

Abstract:
During the 2009 economic recession, United States business leaders cut marketing expenditures between 33% and 50% more than they did for any other business expenditure to mitigate financial loss because business leaders often regard marketing as an expense and not an investment. Since there is not a widely applied marketing measurement standard, this multiple-case study focused on finding key performance indicators that healthcare and sales small business leaders in eastern United States with less than 500 employees, and marketing evaluation practices in place, used to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing. Institutional theory was used as the conceptual framework to explore the key drivers behind marketing measurement practices. The focus of this study was on the experiences of 4 small business leaders in Atlanta, Georgia, and Baltimore, Maryland, who have developed financial and nonfinancial strategies to measure their marketing performance. Data collected for this study included 20-minute interviews with each participant, strategic plans, and field notes. A modified van Kaam and triangulation approach was used for data analysis to identify themes, which included the need to tie marketing measurement to the product or service offering and drive revenue or traffic to their business. The results of the study may benefit practitioners who work on social change strategies because the conclusions clarify effective marketing practices and increase well-being of customers. Further, this study provides recommendations for successful marketing measurement strategies that may help businesses meet the needs of community members.

Abstract:
This subject concerns, in a general way, the obsolescence management and the consideration of components life cycle in a multi-technological complex system. Rank 1 Suppliers in direct link with their customers make a commitment to guarantee a life of 20 years of their subsets, where their suppliers propose components with short life cycle of the order of 4 – 5 years. These subsets have to remain adaptable and upgradable with regard to permanent evolutions of needs, standards and technologies.“Unconsideration” of these elements has for consequences of the industrial risks which requiring:• The implementation of adapted means of storage, the consideration of guarantee quality and of mountability, and the taking of financial risks (on / under estimations, problems during the storage and components degradation).• Put in place a "serial project" aiming at redesigns a component supporting a function, become impossible to supply, while maintaining it compatible with the interface.• The search of solutions, allowing adapting the means and the products to the application of new standards / norms and needs. The target of this thesis is to study the obsolescence according to the complementary angles of: performance, structure, functions and features of the systems. These researches should allow, in obsolescence engineering, to determine a set of methods or tools for the control of the industrial risks. This thesis will lean on a set of real cases which obsolescence management is considered as a critical element. The studies have to allow formulating recommendations regarding conception of new subsets whose partial obsolescence, will not damage the features offered by the compound finished products, standards of choice during the design, to identify the life cycles of components and to explore the management of the obsolescence through concrete cases, on products at present marketed.Secondly, it will be necessary to look for the predictability and the adaptability of the system in what would be the next technological step.Allow by the anticipation, to act before undergoing. Which gains could be realized by a company mastering the guarantee of supply without discontinuity and without excess of production?

Abstract:
Food is one of the strongest influences affecting both human health and the environment. The food sector is responsible for a substantial share of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, and the demand for more sustainable diets has, therefore, increased. The individual is starting to realize one's own possibility to contribute to a more sustainable society, and people are willing to change their habits to become more sustainable. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to create holistic KPIs for sustainable food systems that encourage improvement. The KPIs aim to measure and quantify sustainability from three perspectives: environmental, economic and social sustainability. The methodology used is a framework consisting of five focus areas aiming to create sustainability indicators. The purpose of the five focus areas are to establish vision, indicator framework, indicator selection, stakeholder participation and lastly communication design and strategy. 13 KPIs have been developed, focusing on electricity usage, water usage, GHG emissions, waste management, well-being and expenses. The target group, aimed to use the KPIs, consists of students living in Sweden, making the KPIs adjusted to a student’s lifestyle. The KPIs range from 0-100 %, and a final sustainability ranking is provided through a weighted average of the 13 indicators. The indicators are presented in a radar chart to increase awareness of the students' everyday habits and aim to encourage improvement to increase the sustainability ranking.

Sedehi, Arya. "Evaluating the impacts of enterprise resource planning on organizational performance for small to medium enterprises in manufacturing." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53563.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s fast-paced global economy has intensified the demand for manufacturing companies to make their products more quickly and with higher quality to meet heightened consumer expectations while reducing costs. This competitive environment requires small to medium enterprise’s (SMEs) to implement well-designed business processes and leverage information technology (IT), such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, within their facilities to become more agile, flexible, and integrated to meet changing market demands. Issues emerge when facility managers lack reliable data on performance and costs, which subsequently impairs even basic decisions for resource allocation or process improvement. Although the benefits of a successful ERP implementation in large firms are recognized, there is a general lack of empirical IT productivity literature focusing on SMEs. This research is expected to contribute to a framework for performance measurement, providing facility decision-makers with important metrics for analyzing their firm’s ability to improve upon competitive priorities. Employing the Delphi process, key performance indicators (KPIs) including time, speed, quality, and cost, and corresponding performance measurement metrics, investigations are conducted between traditional manufacturing processes in SMEs and processes enhanced through ERP adoption. In this longitudinal case study, significant improvements are observed in production operations relative to time following ERP implementation including a reduction in the defect rate, total manufacturing cost, and scrap rate along with increases in on-time delivery and flexibility.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
How does one know that a project is on track? What criterias should be monitored between the Gates so that specified criterias is obtained at the Gate? Which measuring points are needed? At what intervals should the progress be measured? How does the project manager present the progress to its stakeholders in a successful manner so that the stakeholders understand the status and decide upon corrective actions if needed? A key factor in successfully managing projects between phases and Gates would most presumably lie in the ability to see the progress of tasks between the gates. The objective of this Master thesis is therefore aimed to contribute with knowledge regarding how to achieve a sound progress between the Gates of the project so that specified gatecriterias will be obtained at the Gate. This Master thesis will also seek to contribute knowledge about how to communicate the progress to its stakeholders in a successful manner whereupon the following questions where put: 1. What indicators are suitable to use in the project management process when following the project progress between the Gates in accordance to previous research and leading practice findings? 2. How can the progress be communicated to its stakeholders so that it will be easy to follow the progress of the project between the Gates? 3. What measurement intervals are considered to be suitable when following the progress between Gates? 4. How can indicators be designed/developed based on a specific business requirements? A hermenuistic qualitative study with an inductive approach was conducted. Since the author of this thesis works at the company where the study was conducted the method contains many elements of action research. A summary of recommendations from research and leading practice were compared with results obtained in the benchmarking study and the case study from which conclusions were drawn. A total of 23 semi-structured interviews were conducted during the benchmarking study and the case study with the intention of understanding the needs of information at the specific business and to understand which factors that could be considered as success factors. The progress of the work can be considered as an explorative design process in which the author successively have designed and developed suitable Key Perfomance Indicators, KPI’s based on a specific business requirements. The results shows that modern research has come to an insights that the progress of a projects consists of more factors than the three indicators "Scope, time and cost" recommended at the early stages of using project as a working method. The different phases of the project require different actions and efforts and interventions, various stakerholders requires different information, different levels of the project management has different needs for follow-up and require different levels of detailed information, why a balanced combination of some 15 different Key performace Indicators (KPI's), designed for the unique needs of each project and activity is recommended. The study shows that the success of communicating project progress lies in the way cooperation is based in the project. It is recommended that the communication structure is designed so that a holistic perspective and a "red thread" in forum and dialogue are obtained. Visualization of progress and participation of all stakeholders at pulsmeetings were found to be a prerequisite for successful results. Regarding an appropriate interval, it is concluded that each interval are recommended to be set on the basis of need since the needs of dialogue for each indicator varies with the progress of the projects. However, communication using the principle "rather babysteps - often and short, than elephant paces - seldom but long" is recommended. Based on the results from the study, the thesis ends with recommending suitable indicators, suitable communication structure and suitable intervals designed uniquely for the specific business in the case study.

Introduction and background: The 1990s crisis and the global financial crisis year 2008 shows the same indications that the property market was affected negative. The Swedish Property companies had a difficult time on the market when the crisis led to decreased property trade and financing problems for the Property companies. The Swedish property companies became less attractive on the market and contributed to a drop in prices on investment property. Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to examine if there is any relation between the Swedish Property companies impairments on their investment property and the global financial crisis year 2008. Method: The essay is based on a quantitative study where we examined Swedish Property companies’ annual reports. We answered our questions and our purpose from the empirical data that we collected from the annual reports. Conclusions: The study resulted in that we found a correlation between the Swedish Property companies’ impairments on their investment properties and the global financial crisis year 2008. However, we found that the Swedish Property companies’ impairments were lower than market indications prove.

Abstract:
Pay per click (PPC) advertising over the past few years has gained importance and companies invest larger amounts of money into it. There are more PPC systems in the market from which to choose for advertising. Which PPC system is appropriate to use for a specific campaign? This thesis consists of four chapters (excluding introduction and conclusion). The first chapter clarifies terms, talks about the basic characteristics of the subject and gives an idea of the importance of the topic (position of pay per click in the market of internet advertising). The second chapter characterizes three PPC systems (and their principles) which the author considers to be the most important in the Slovak market. The third chapter is important for the characterisation of different types of PPC campaigns. In it the author used his own classification of PPC campaigns. Two case studies are analysed in the fourth chapter. According to them an evaluation of the suitability of selected PPC systems is made (using induction method). The first three chapters are based on an analysis of available literature, the fourth part on the author's own experiences.

Abstract:
Automotive SPICE is used to evaluate the efficiency of the development processes for OEMs and ECU suppliers. It is a domain specific version of SPICE. Many automotive manufacturers are demanding Automotive SPICE level 2 from their suppliers. Application life cycle management solutions specific to automotive industry focus more on standardisation yet providing very little information about performance of processes. This thesis shows how Business Intelligence (BI) solutions can be helpful in achieving Automotive SPICE level 2 compliance and as comprehensive reporting tools. Moreover the evaluation of approaches for implementation of different BI systems has shown that commercial solutions can be beneficial for small to medium size suppliers. Implementing a BI solution can also point out possible improvement opportunities and bad practices for an organisation. The implemented BI system can only be efficient and useful if the underlying data is accurate and responsive.

Abstract:
Business Management is central to all organizations, a popular approach is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), but how this method should be adapted and used prevails over shared opinions. There have been many previous studies on the actual implementation phase and therefore this study intends to investigate the maintenance phase of BSC. At the centre of this study is experienced leaders with extensive BSC experience and their views about which motives that are critical when successfully maintaining a balanced operations management. We conducted a qualitative study, in which a goal-driven selection with criteria-driven focus was mainly applied. Five people in senior positions were interviewed about their experience working with BSC. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded and then analyzed by a theoretical analysis model created by ourselves. The model was compiled by disagreements, gaps and lack of opinions in BSC literature and research articles. The model was then used to analyze the empirical data. The results that emerged from this study showed that there are areas that affect, promote and inhibit balanced operations management. These areas need to be handled, combined and adapted to their own operations, furthermore the study also shows that BSC is a method that creates conditions for sustaining a balanced business management, given that the method is used correctly. The study is written in Swedish.

Abstract:
Revenue management is a thoroughly researched field of study and it is widely used in several different industries. The Revenue Management Department at the airline SAS (Scandinavian Airline System) serves to maximise the profit of the company’s flights. At their disposal they have a number of tools, which use KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) as a measurement. The KPIs are used in prognosis to determine future initiatives, and to analyse and verify results. SAS does not know if the KPIs they focus on to measure performance are the most relevant for optimisation of revenue for their flights. In an attempt to simplify the use of SAS’ optimisation system we have performed a correlation analysis on a set of selected KPIs and assessed the influence relationships between these KPIs, in order to identify pivotal KPIs. Furthermore, we have researched origindestination control and the network effect to broaden the scope of the investigation. We have presented the work and the results in this thesis. The correlation analysis was performed using data, spanning a two-year period, for domestic flights (within Sweden) provided by SAS. The results of the analysis showed that the assessed KPIs could be divided into three groups; within each group the KPIs are closely correlated. As a result, we concluded that to focus on one KPI in each group should be adequate for evaluating performance. The three pivotal KPIs are revenue passenger kilometre, cabin factor and revenue per available seat kilometre. We have recommended SAS to continue working with origin-destination control and that the pivotal KPIs should be used as a measurement for the network, as well as measurements such as net leg revenue. Additionally, we have suggested that SAS conducts equivalent or similar analyses in other suitable areas to identify or confirm pivotal KPIs.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-87).
Non-profit humanitarian relief organizations have typically been unable to measure the performance of their supply chains due to an inability to centrally capture data from operations. With the recent development and implementation of information technology systems that can support the logistics function of these organizations, the data is now available to measure performance, but what is still lacking is a central framework of metrics that measures performance according to the organization's strategic goals. First, this thesis reviews the best practices noted in performance measurement systems of the logistics functions in military and commercial organizations and applies them to the humanitarian sector. Second, the thesis suggests a framework of key performance indicators to be implemented in an international non-profit humanitarian organization based on the unique strategic goals of the sector. The thesis then applies this proposed framework to two actual operations performed by this organization.
(cont.) The analysis performed herein proves that a measurement system would help strengthen the organization's ability to deliver goods to beneficiaries more efficiently and effectively. Finally, the thesis addresses feasibility issues of implementing a measurement system in the non-profit sector and also describes the next steps of opportunities related to measurement systems within humanitarian logistics.

Abstract:
Monitoring key performance indicators (KPI) give practitioners immersive experience that is priceless when it comes to decision making and performance-enhancing in software companies. Used together with different tools that enable visualization of KPIs, users obtain big advantages that enable quick troubleshooting and detections of errors that could emerge in a product or a system. Many studies have been followed out in the field of data visualization using KPIs and digital dashboards. Still, the subject of KPIs providing valuable information to companies that are developing HR and payroll systems is relatively unexplored. The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate how essential KPIs should be visualized on a digital dashboard using a case company that focuses on developing HR and payroll systems. To investigate the phenomenon, five different interviews were conducted, and a digital dashboard was developed. The interviewees that participated in the empiric data collection were employees stationed in different teams with various authorities and experiences in the field of dashboards and KPIs. Previous works in the field of data visualization indicates that KPIs can be used and presented in various ways. When presenting KPIs on a dashboard, there are different factors that are of big influence of how successful the visualization gets. There are no complete templates on how KPIs should be visualized, however there are guidelines on how a dashboard could be shaped. Something that previous works and different interviewees in the present study agreed on was that a dashboard should consist of 4 to 8 KPIs. Too many KPIs can decrease the chance of obtaining the advantages that monitoring and visualizing KPIs on a digital dashboard can bring. Something that emerged from the study is the importance of first identify what to visualize and then implement how. Among the answers during the data collection, many interviewees found the number of users that were logged in on their products as something that would be useful to monitor. The reason for this was partly that the interviewees considered that by monitoring these numbers, it could increase the pride among the colleagues. The interviewees thought that it might boost morale among the employees if they visualized the many users of the products they are developing.

ROSSETTI, ANDREA. "Model checking business processes." Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/241895.

Abstract:
Business Process Management systems are often used to improve the productivity of organizations and companies. For such systems, it is important to control all the variables (among them the time) and the status of all the stakeholders that are involved into the processes. This task aims at improving the employee satisfaction, the estimation of time and criticalities, and the control of business processes of an organization. In spite of this important task, most of the companies base their analysis on very simple process models. This work presents a Semantic Timed Model Checking algorithm for Business Processes. It has been used as a basic tool in several scenarios such as process selection, process validation, and process monitoring. The approach relies on: 1) a representation of business processes based on semantically annotated timed transition systems (ATTS), 2) a representation of specifications based on a semantically annotated version of timed computation tree logic (AnTCTL), and 3) an efficient model checking algorithm. The ATTS allows us to take into account the temporal evolution of a business process, with its temporal constraints. This is based on Timed Transition Systems. The importance of semantics is also widely recognized. Indeed, semantics allows us to provide a non-ambiguous meaning to process activities and variables. According to the mainstream, the semantics relies on Description Logic. As a consequence, this work presents an integration of timed transition systems and semantic representation technologies in an efficient way. The AnTCTL allows us to represent the traditional performance indicators with a well-founded semantics. Furthermore, it is possible to define a new set of indicators that it is not possible to define with the traditional business process models. The model checking algorithm is an integration of traditional timed model checking techniques with semantic reasoning. This algorithm has been proved to be sound and complete and PSPACE-Complete. This work can be considered the first step towards the use of semantic timed model checking in problems of performance analysis for Business Processes. The proposed approach has been applied to real world case studies.

Abstract:
[EN] Judo is a complex sport where many multidisciplinary key variables, i.e. strength, power, speed, technical and tactical abilities, motivation or estrés management, which have a significant impact on the final result of combats have been identified. However, these studies have usually focused on either only one or a few variables from the same ambit instead of considering a full set of heterogeneous multidisciplinary variables at the same time, which are of different ambits such as physical, tactical-technical, psychological or lifestyle and, at the same time, assessing their impact over judokas' performance. Additionally, once these multidisciplinary variables are identified, it is a complex process to determine which ones are directly linked with the capacity of the athlete for reaching his/her strategic objectives, which can be defined as the main medium-long term strategic goals (i.e. to get the classification for the Olympic Games) and which, therefore, condition the judokas efforts and planning. Then, this Doctoral PhD Thesis develops a methodological proposal for identifying, priorisiting and quantifying the impact of a set of multidisciplinary variables on the strategic performance of judokas, providing a more complete and global vision and, extensively, valuable additional information to make important decisions such as designing training plans or planning the competitions calendar. To this end, a Multi-Criteria Decision Technique, the Analytic Network Proces, is applied, which allows to jointly evaluate and quantify such a set of multidisciplinary variables, which are heterogeneous and which many of them lack of historical data and whose impact on the judoka's performance is very difficult to determine. In this sense, it is also necessary to take into account the existence of other type of relationship, the inter-relationships between the multidisciplinary variables, which should also be assessed. Then the next relationships between variables are considered: Relationships between a set of multidisciplinary variables of judo that are affecting to the judoka's performance. Inter-relationships between the judo multidisciplinary variables. Inter-relationships between the strategic objectives that represent the judoka's performance. Therefore, this Doctoral PhD Thesis is structured as follows: In Chapter 1, the approach and structure are presented. In Chapter 2, a literature review is carried out, justifying the research gap and identifying the main judo multidisciplinary variables. In Chapter 3, a practical study of the importance of the tactical-variables in judo is carried out, analysing all the judo ellite tournaments of 2019. Chapter 4 presents the methodological proposal, justifying initially the application of the Analytic Network Process and then the phases of the methodology. In Chapter 5, the methodological proposal is applied to the High Performance Judo Center of Valencia, where a judo expert group applies the phases of the methodology for the under 66 kgs category. In Chapter 6, the main conclusions as well as the future research lines are presented.

Abstract:

In this thesis the Third-Party Logistics (3PL) partnership between the Japanese trading company Gadelius and the European logistics provider Mahé is investigated. This was done as a case study, mainly taking place on location at Gadelius’ headquarter in Tokyo.

The purpose has been to identify and evaluate the fulfilment of initial objectives, both with respect to agreed on terms and expectations of each party, analyze the reasons behind result and provide recommendations for the future.

In terms of what is strictly defined and agreed on in the contract the partnership is principally fulfilled, but this setup is not good in terms of how full 3PL-effects could be achieved.

The not so strictly defined parts of the contract stating that Mahé should work proactively are however not fulfilled to the same degree. This is connected to the lack of a dedicated Mahé representative being integrated into the OtD-team at Gadelius.

Because of this Gadelius’, to begin with very high, expectations on effects have become unrealistic, which has contributed to bad sentiments against Mahé and their capabilities. This has further been enhanced by Key Performance Indicators that don’t fully match the essential objectives with the partnership.

To change the situation two possible ways for the future are presented. If Gadelius’ focus is on indirect cost reductions an expanded partnership should be chosen, while a focus on direct cost reductions and a need for an easier change implementation call for a more limited partnership. For both alternatives new ways for measuring performance are suggested.

Abstract:
The web and mobile web traffic is growing rapidly due to service accessibility in densely populated areas and massive usage of smart hand held devices (smartphones, pads and Internet dongles). This is a challenge for mobile operators and service providers, because it forces systematically increasing network throughput capacity and in parallel to keep this investment on profitable basis. On the other side, the user satisfaction with mobile broadband service should be considered as well, in order to balance the user expectations and mobile operator investments. Our work provides extensive QoE study for different conditions in sense of mobile web service, web content, network conditions and end user device. Finally, the obtained results create basis for more dimensional overview of mobile web QoE and allow to recognize quality and saturation thresholds based on network parameters. Further, obtained data provide base for design three prediction models for prediction of MOS (one for notebook, one for mobile device) and acceptability.

Abstract:
This thesis presents two contributions. The first contribution is the study of key performance indicators to monitor physical and virtual machines activity running on VMware and KVM hypervisors. This study highlights performance metrics and provides advanced analysis with the aim to prevent or detect abnormalities related to the four main resources of a datacenter: CPU, memory, disk and network. Thesecond contribution relates to a tool for virtual machines with pre-determined and / or atypical behaviors detection. The detection of these virtual machines has several objectives. First, optimize the use of hardware resources by freeing up resources by removing unnecessary virtual machines or by resizing those oversized. Second, optimize infrastructure performance by detecting undersized or overworked virtual machines and those having an atypical activity

Abstract:
Organizations use Business Intelligence (BI) systems to monitor how well they are meeting their goals and objectives. Yet, very often BI systems do not include clear models of the organization’s goals or of how to measure whether they are satisfied or not. Several researchers now attempt to integrate goal models into BI systems, but there are still major challenges related to how to get access to the BI data to populate the part of the goal model (often indicators) used to assess goal satisfaction. This thesis explores a new approach to integrate BI systems with goal models. In particular, it explores the integration of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, a leading BI tool, with an Eclipse-based goal modeling tool named jUCMNav. jUCMNav is an open source graphical editor for the User Requirements Notation (URN), which includes the Use Case Map notation for scenarios and processes and the Goal-oriented Requirement Language for business objectives. URN was recently extended with the concept of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to enable performance assessment and monitoring of business processes. In jUCMNav, KPIs are currently calculated or modified manually. The new integration proposed in this thesis maps these KPIs to report elements that are generated automatically by Cognos based on the model defined in jUCMNav at runtime, with minimum effort. We are using IBM Cognos Mashup Service, which includes web services that enable the retrieval of report elements at the most granular level. This transformation provides managers and analysts with useful goal-oriented and process-oriented monitoring views fed by just-in-time BI information. This new solution also automates retrieving data from Cognos servers, which helps reducing the high costs usually caused by the amount of manual work required otherwise. The novel approach presented in this thesis avoids manual report generation and minimizes any contract with respect to the location of manually created reports, hence leading to better usability and performance. The approach and its tool support are illustrated with an ongoing example, validated with a case study, and verified through testing.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis was to develop and evaluate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and battery usage associated with Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (LiBESS) used as Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR). The investigation was based on three of Vattenfall´s LiBESS projects that use the same lithium-ion battery technology but vary in system rating and configuration. It was found that two of the most important KPIs are response time and energy efficiency. The response time describes how fast the system can respond to changes in grid frequency. Additionally, the energy efficiency describes how effectively the system can provide energy storage during service and it can be parametrized into the efficiency of the battery, converter and transformer. The results show that all the considered LiBESS can fulfill the response time requirements of 30 seconds for FCR provision. In the future stricter requirements for the response time in grid stabilization services will most likely be required. Nevertheless, the results showed that a well configured LiBESS can provide response times on the millisecond scale. The energy efficiency evaluation showed that the system energy efficiency decreased from 89% to 85% when the power increased from 50% to 100% of rated power. At 75% of rated power it was found that the converter had the lowest efficiency (92%) based on the analysis of the efficiency of all the system components. It was also found that the power consumed by auxiliary loads was nearly constant for the examined power rates and that it significantly reduced the energy efficiency. Lastly, the battery usage analysis showed that the battery often idles or operates at low power rates if the frequency dead-band of ±10 mHz is applied around the nominal value of 50 Hz. Moreover, the battery usage can be characterized by an average State of Charge of 50% and a maximum Depth of Discharge of 30% during both charge and discharge of the batteries.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Internet and intranets are viewed as capable of supplying "Anything, Anywhere, Anytime" and e-commerce, e-government, e-community, and military C4I are now deploying many and varied applications to serve their needs. Network management is currently centralized in operations centers. To assure customer satisfaction with the network performance they typically plan, configure and monitor the network devices to insure an excess of bandwidth, that is overprovision. If this proves uneconomical or if complex and poorly understood interactions of equipment, protocols and application traffic degrade performance creating customer dissatisfaction, another more application-centric, way of managing the network will be needed. This research investigates a new qualitative class of network performance measures derived from the current quantitative metrics known as quality of service (QOS) parameters. The proposed class of qualitative indicators focuses on utilizing current network performance measures (QOS values) to derive abstract quality of experience (QOE) indicators by application class. These measures may provide a more user or application-centric means of assessing network performance even when some individual QOS parameters approach or exceed specified levels. The mathematics of functional analysis suggests treating QOS performance values as a vector, and, by mapping the degradation of the application performance to a characteristic lp-norm curve, a qualitative QOE value (good/poor) can be calculated for each application class. A similar procedure could calculate a QOE node value (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) to represent the service level of the switch or router for the current mix of application traffic. To demonstrate the utility of this approach a discrete event simulation (DES) test-bed, in the OPNET telecommunications simulation environment, was created modeling the topology and traffic of three semi-autonomous networks connected by a backbone. Scenarios, designed to degrade performance by under-provisioning links or nodes, are run to evaluate QOE for an access network. The application classes and traffic load are held constant. Future research would include refinement of the mathematics, many additional simulations and scenarios varying other independent variables. Finally collaboration with researchers in areas as diverse as human computer interaction (HCI), software engineering, teletraffic engineering, and network management will enhance the concepts modeled.

Krishnapillai, Alagesan. "Understanding key performance indicators through driver measures." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28321.

Abstract:
Performance management is a vital part of every organization for its success and long term survival in the current competitive global market place. An organization needs a sound performance management framework to analyze its data to make strategic and tactical decisions. The weaknesses in today's performance management frameworks are linked to their inability to integrate strategy formulation with implementation. In our thesis, we introduce D river Measure Models that can define cause-and-effect relationship between d river measures and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for effective performance management and strategic alignment. Driver Measure Models make the performance management more dynamic as the operational activities are linked to strategies. Another contribution of the thesis is the identification of mathematical techniques to quantify relationships between KPIs and driver measures. Thesis makes an effort to show how mathematical techniques can be used for planning and forecasting outcomes while changing strategies. After conducting analysis using the mathematical techniques, organization can arrive at a set of operational tasks associated to driver measures which need to be executed to achieve its optimal result. Finally, we identified the essential set of criteria that a performance management framework needs to address through a literature survey and a gap analysis of existing frameworks. We created an extension to the Balanced Scorecard framework based on Driver Measure Models and support for the management of external factors to address these criteria and compared it to existing frameworks using a case study.
