Aim of study: The interpretation of results of leaf analysis can be performed by nutritional balance methods, such as Kenworthy method (KW) and diagnostic levels of contents, whose achievements for cacao constitute the main objective of this work.Area of study: Bahia, Brazil.Material and methods: The database covered cacao trees in two cultivation systems: agroforestry systems and full sun. The reference populations were composed of plots with relative yield higher than the average plus half a standard deviation of each of these cultivation systems, in addition to a combined population of both systems.Main results: The norms of the KW method were compared by the t test, for mean, with 72% concordance; and F, for variance, 82% concordant. The diagnoses made based on specific norms per cultivation system and the general norm agreed on average of 91%. Potential response curves were obtained as a function of the Balanced Indices of Kenworthy (BIK) for each nutrient, by the boundary-line method, in addition to sufficiency ranges for BIK and for leaf contents for cacao.Research highlights: It is concluded that the general KW norms associated with the original Kenworthy ranges or the specific ranges for cacao are efficient in the nutritional diagnosis of cacao.

Both level of feeding and dietary composition have been demonstrated to influence bacterial colonisation and diarrhoea in the weaned pig (Smith & Hall 1968, Bertschinger et al 1978, Lecce et al 1983). Kenworthy and Allen 1966 proposed that “the stimulus to bacterial growth derives from the hosts response mechanisms to intestinal irritation” and that the enterotoxigenic E Coli “Acts as an exacerbating agent rather than a primary pathogen” (Kenworthy et al 1967).Several workers have suggested that the primary intestinal response is villus atrophy, an elevation in crypt cell mitosis (by up to x10) and crypt cell hyperplasia, associated with malabsorption, mal-digestion and increased intra-epithelial lymphocytes. Such a response is characteristic of a T cell mediated type IV hypersensitivity (Ferguson 1980). Miller et al (1984) have therefore suggested that one of the factors which may contribute to the aetiology of postweaning diarrhoea is a transient hypersensitivity to dietary antigens prior to the development of oral tolerance.

Abstract:

This study tests four hypotheses related to the much-cited work on density and automobile dependence by Newman and Kenworthy, using multivariate analysis and data for 157 large US urbanized areas. We find that density alone explains only a small fraction of the variation in vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and many confounders account for the differences in automobile dependence. We also find that it is not the localized density of individual neighborhoods that causes VMT to be lower in compact urbanized areas but rather the relative accessibility of neighborhoods to the rest of the region.

<p>Higher education continues to place an emphasis on service-learning, specifically within business and management sciences (Kenworthy-U’Ren & Peterson, 2005). A local academic business organization at a small institution chose to embark on a service-learning endeavor. The purpose of this study was for business majors, active in Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), and their advisors/professors to further investigate microlending and other business-related concepts through the use of service learning. Service was provided to the campus community, area high school Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students, and to the borrowers of their Kiva loans. The research, qualitative in nature, employed case study methodology. Themes emerged in academic, personal, and civic dimensions as a result of analysis of student responses to guided questionnaires.</p>

Abstract Certainly trickle (or drip) irrigation is not new to horticulture. In the early 1970s Chapin (1, 2, 3, 4), Gustafson (7, 8), and Hall (9) pioneered its use in horticultural crops in the United States. Kenworthy (10, 11, 12, 13) had introduced the concept of trickle irrigation to fruit growers in western Michigan by 1972. It appeared to be a “natural”; many growers already had deep wells (for hydrocooling cherries) available as excellent water sources. Since then the use of trickle irrigation has spread rapidly throughout the horticultural industry on a worldwide scale. Most draw on deep-well water or on canal, river, or lake water, which may require treatment, filtration or both to render it usable. However, the use of a trickle system for waste disposal was a new application of an existing technology.

La muestra del estudio estuvo conformada por 148 niños (78 y 70 respectivamente). A los participantes se les administró tareas neuropsicológicas relacionadas con las funciones ejecutivas de memoria de trabajo, inhibición y atención. Para evaluar el FE conductual, sus profesores cumplimentaron también el cuestionario Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF, Gioia, Isquith, Guy y Kenworthy, 2000). Los resultados evidenciaron diferencias entre ambos grupos en tareas neuropsicológicas de memoria de trabajo y atención. Especialmente importantes fueron las diferencias encontradas en todas las variables incluidas en el índice de metacognición del BRIEF cumplimentado por los profesores. Se comentan las implicaciones de estos hallazgos para la investigación y la práctica psicoeducativa.

El objetivo del presente estudio consistió en analizar la relación entre medidas neuropsicológicas y conductuales de funcionamiento ejecutivo (FE) y la comprensión lectora en estudiantes de último ciclo de Educación Primaria. La muestra del estudio estuvo conformada por 148 niños (62% de 5º curso; 38% de 6º curso) y sus profesores. Se administraron tareas neuropsicológicas relacionadas con las funciones ejecutivas de memoria de trabajo, inhibición y atención. Para evaluar el FE conductual, sus profesores cumplimentaron también el cuestionario Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy y Kenworthy, 2000). Los resultados evidenciaron una relación entre la comprensión lectora y diferentes medidas de FE evaluadas con ambos tipos de pruebas. La memoria de trabajo mostró una estrecha relación con la comprensión lectora en ambos casos. Entre las variables de FE conductual destaca también el peso de la resolución de problemas, la flexibilidad y la planificación. Se comentan las implicaciones de estos hallazgos para la investigación y la práctica psicoeducativa.

The communicative method has been criticized because in stressing the negotiation of meaning and the speakers intentions, accuracy has become a minor goal. Accuracy implies attention to form, for example, correct grammar and correct style, vocabulary and pronunciation It is true that we can communicate even though we make these kinds of errors, however, too many mistakes may hinder comprehension. Good pronunciation should be a goal in any course that attempts at communicating effectively. Abstract:

Soursop is a tropical fruit of economic importance in Mexico, however, there is scarce research on its nutrition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the foliar nutrient concentration in the vegetative state and to compare the nutritional diagnosis between the Kenworthy Balance Index (KBI) and Deviation from Optimum Percentage (DOP) in the soursop crop. The foliar concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn and B presented lower values than the reference standard. It was found concordance between KBI and DOP indices for the diagnosis in 91% of the orchards; the nutrients N, P, K, Ca, Mn and B were deficient in all orchards and excessive Cu (in 33% of the orchards), Fe and Zn (in 8% of the orchards respectively). However, the diagnosis of Mg, Fe, Cu and Zn in some orchards was contradictory due their adequate ranges with the KBI and deficient with the DOP. In general, with the two indices 25% of the orchards coincide with the decreasing order of the nutrients P<K<Ca<N<Mg<Mn<B<Zn<Fe<Cu. Although there were some similarities and differences in the nutritional diagnosis among KBI and DOP, the specific nutritional needs of each soursop orchard must be supply.

Abstract Calcifuges, represented by the blueberry and cranberry (Vaccinium spp.) and rhododendrons and azaleas (Rhododendron spp.), are an economically important segment of the horticultural industry. They share the common requirement of an acid soil, about pH 5.5 or below, and minimal nutrition. Indeed, overfertilization, particularly when plants are young, can cause foliar injury. Much nutritional research has been performed on these acid-loving plants from the aspects of fertilizer recommendations and soil management practices. It is not the purpose of this paper to review the nutritional requirements or recommendations of blueberries and other calcifuges. Such information can be found elsewhere (Eck, 1966; Joiner et al., 1983; Kenworthy, 1973; Kofranek and Lunt, 1975; Korcak, 1988; Trevett, 1962). Instead, the two-fold purpose of this paper is to first examine the role of selected elements (Mn, Al, Fe, Ca, and N) on blueberry growth in atypical soil/site environments and, second, to explore the potential variation within Vaccinium that may be beneficial in genetic selection for growth under these new situations.

A diagnose foliar é o método de maior relevância na definição e na interpretação do estado nutricional das plantas. A interpretação correta sobre o estado nutricional da cultura só é possível quando se regionalizam os valores de referência. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, determinar índices diagnósticos para interpretação de resultados de análise foliar de milho mediante o uso dos métodos de interpretação: Nível crítico (NC), Faixa de suficiência (FS) e Índices Balanceados de Kenworthy (IBK). Amostraram-se solos, folhas e produtividade em 120 lavouras de milho, nas safras agrícolas 2010/2011 e 2011/2012, na região do Alto Paranaíba, MG. Para gerar os índices diagnósticos pelos métodos FS e IBK a população foi dividida em duas subpopulações, com base na produtividade: acima ou abaixo de 11.795 kg ha-1. Os teores de nutrientes propostos como adequados pelos métodos citados foram semelhantes. A amplitude das faixas ótimas foi menor que a encontrada na literatura para milho. Os índices diagnósticos regionalizados pelos métodos NC, FS e IBK aumentam a confiabilidade ao diagnosticar talhões com as mesmas características das normas estabelecidas em relação a valores de referência universal.

Abstract:

El cultivo de la sandía (Citrullus lanatus, thumb) es de los que más requiere del factor hídrico, por lo que la implementación de una adecuada nutrición, aunado al uso eficiente del agua, puede ser una buena alternativa de manejo para los productores de este fruto en la región de Tolimán, Jalisco, y en otras regiones del país. Se realizaron muestreos de suelo y de agua para determinar su calidad para riego, así como del estado nutrimental del cultivo de la sandía mediante las metodologías del índice de balance de Kenworthy (IBK) y la desviación del óptimo porcentual (DOP). Los resultados muestran que el IBK es útil para los casos de muestras pequeñas y en estudios a nivel local (por valles y/o municipios). Asimismo, este estudio preliminar sugiere que el número de observaciones sea cuando menos de 48, porque así se tendrán tres rangos nutrimentales: alto, medio y bajo. Bajo este esquema se repartirían las observaciones en una población normal: 48 / 3 = 16 observaciones por rango, lo que es suficiente para determinar los valores reales, sin tener que hacer uso de la desviación estándar.

Perennial warm-season pasture grasses used in Florida become dormant in late fall and winter because of short days, cooler temperatures, and frosts. Many livestock producers may choose to establish cool-season annual pasture species to supplement their forage production. These plants are usually higher in total digestible nutrients (TDN) and crude protein (CP) than summer perennial grasses, translating into greater animal performance (Dubeux et al., 2016). Man må ha lisens fra rettighetshaver PAR, inc. for å kjøpe og bruke BRIEF. Litteratursøk: Seks norske artikler inneholdt relevant psykometrisk informasjon og ble inkludert i vurderingen. Psykometri: Det eksisterer ikke norske normer. Det er støtte for bruk av amerikanske normer da disse normene lå innenfor for 95 % konfidensintervallet for skårene i et norsk utvalg. Remarkably little is known in detail about the phonetics and phonology of naturally occurring conversational talk. Virtually nothing of interest is known of theinteractionalimplications of particular kinds of phonetic events in everyday talk: in particular about the ways in which participants in talk deploy general phonetic resources to accomplish specific interactional tasks. This is in part a consequence of the tendency of recent research on the phonological aspect of discourse to limit itself to ‘intonation’ as an area of primary interest. This work has moved away from the type of phonological analysis, such as that of Halliday (1967), that states intonational systems in terms of grammatically defined units or sentence types. Workers such as Brazil (1975, 1978, 1981), Brown, Currie and Kenworthy (1981), and Coulthard and Brazil (1981) have pursued Bolinger's suggestion that the relationship between intonation and grammar is ‘casual not causal’ and have sought to relate ‘intonation’ to discourse categories rather than to grammatical ones. These, and similar attempts to deal with aspects of discourse phonology, have suggested some organizational features which traditional linguistic accounts have not dealt with. On the whole, however, these recent attempts have been less than satisfactory for one or more of the following reasons.

Abstract:

Masalah-masalah kesehatan akibat penuaan terjadi pada berbagai sistem tubuh. Berdasarkan informasi data yang dikutip dari buku ajar geriatri, penyakit yang paling tinggi presentasenya adalah osteoartritis, yaitu mencapai 49% (Kuntaraf, 2002). Osteoartritis adalah penyakit pada sendi-sendi penahan berat tubuh yang bersifat progresif, non inflamasi, nonsistemik, dan recurrent (Reeves, 2009). Prevalensi osteoartritis lebih banyak terjadi pada usia di atas 35 tahun, terutama wanita di atas 55 tahun (Reeves, 2009). Dalam suatu survey radiografi pada wanita di bawah usia 40 tahun hanya 2% yang mengalami osteoartritis, pada usia 45-60 tahun mencapai 30% sementara pada usia di atas 61 tahun lebih dari 65% (Noer, 2006). Dari hasil observasi dari berbagai Rumah Sakit ditemukan bahwa osteoartritis lebih banyak menyerang wanita. Berdasarkan hasil studi pendahuluan di Puskesmas Mulyorejo Kecamatan Deli Serdang didapatkan bahwa jumlah lanjut usia yang selalu kontrol adalah 136 orang dan sebanyak 112 orang berjenis kelamin perempuan serta 87 orang diantaranya menderita osteoartritis. ketakutan dapat mempengaruhi respon pembuluh darah terhadap rangsangan vasokontriksi. Salah satu tehnik memberikan massage adalah tindakan massage punggung dengan usapan yang perlahan (Slow-Stroke Back Massage). Usapan dengan lotion/oil memberikan sensasi hangat dengan mengakibatkan dilatasi pada pembuluh darah lokal (Kenworthy et al, 2002). Vasodilatasi pembuluh darah akan meningkatkan peredaran darah pada area yang diusap sehingga aktivitas sel meningkat dan akan mengurangi rasa sakit serta menunjang proses penyembuhan luka (Kusyati E, 2006; Stevens, 2009).

This paper compares the treatment of English pronunciation in school textbooks from France and Poland, in order to see what resources teachers have at their disposal. It is limited to textbooks used at the secondary level of each education system. Recent research has shown that European teachers do not find teaching English pronunciation easy and that many are unsatisfied with their training in relation to teaching pronunciation (Bradford & Kenworthy 1991; Burgess and Spencer 2000; Henderson et al. 2012; Frost and Henderson, 2013; Iivonen, 2005). Textbooks are a widespread resource with the potential to alleviate a lack of extensive pedagogical training. The first part of this paper analyses pronunciation exercises in a representative sample of textbooks from each country. Pronunciation exercises were classified based on the degree to which they mobilize communicative abilities, according to the five categories of a Communicative Framework for teaching pronunciation (Celce-Murcia et al., 2010, p45): Description & analysis, Listening discrimination, Controlled practice, Guided practice, Communicative practice. The first category involves little risk-taking by the learner, usually focusses on form and allows little freedom. At the other end of the spectrum, communicative practice involves a focus on meaning and interaction, with the concomitant greater freedom to make mistakes. The exercises were then analysed to see which segmental and/or prosodic features they favoured and to what extent.

The research papers in this volume highlight some of the major issues in marine conservation and offer some exciting insights into future directions for research and management. It is particularly pleasing that the issue focuses on seagrasses, a component of marine biodiversity that is well recognized and with profound ecological significance, but has suffered widespread decline in its distribution over the past half century. The absence of any accurate inventory of seagrass resources makes it difficult to accurately assess the cumulative impact of human activity on them. However, the need to conserve seagrasses is well recognized and it is exciting to see the significant advances being made in bringing conservation biology techniques to seagrass research. The work of Waycott and Kenworthy (this issue) is clearly showing dramatic differences in the life-history strategies, genetic diversity and population structure of different seagrasses. It suggests that seagrasses are far from the homogenous organism that they seem to have been viewed as up until now. This also supports findings elsewhere which suggest that many of the classic paradigms regarding seagrass biology and ecology are based on inappropriate generalizations from a few species. For example, the work of Paling and others (in this issue) challenges the generally held view that we are unlikely to be able to transplant temperate species of seagrass back into disturbed areas.

For streams draining urban catchments, sediment transport capacity is the key driver of physical impacts including bed sediment removal and channel incision. The main unanswered question is the relative role of flow alteration compared to sediment supply in influencing sediment transport capacity. With this objective, we computed sand and gravel bed sediment transport capacity using the Wilcock and Kenworthy two-fraction bedload transport relation for nine streams in catchments covering a gradient of urbanisation. Computations were done for typical natural bed surface material, based on conditions in the least urban study streams. We compared transport capacity distributions and cumulative transport capacity over one-year between the streams. Transport capacity was up to three orders of magnitude higher in urban streams than in forested-catchment streams. This was driven overwhelmingly by the urbanisation-induced alterations to the flow regime, with only minor feedback from channel form changes. Transport capacity was two to three orders of magnitude greater than measured bedload transport in all but the least urban streams. This excess bedload transport capacity mobilises and removes bed sediment, produces channel incision and enlargement and reduces channel complexity. Rebalancing transport capacity with sediment supply therefore requires significant flow mitigation towards pre-urban conditions. Other responses, which may theoretically help to regain this balance – channel widening, grade control, increasing roughness, sediment augmentation – are either inappropriate or only feasible following flow mitigation measures.

Abstract:

This study was conducted to evaluate fertilization management based on fruit nutrient removal, soil nutrient-supplying capacity and tree nutritional status with standard nutrient values as a reference and the effects on fruit size and yield in Hass avocado trees. The soil chemical characteristics, foliar nutrient content interpreted with the Kenworthy balance index (KBI) method and fruit nutrient removal for a planned yield of 20 ton/ha were used to determine the fertilization management plan for the crop. The experimental area had soils with Andic characteristics and sandy loam texture, low cation exchange capacity and acidic pH. The farmer’s standard fertilization plan was based on excessive fertilizer doses for N, P, K and Ca, and an imbalance of P, Ca and micronutrients was observed with the diagnosis of plant nutrient status. The fertilizer plan based on the KBI method had an effect on yield variables in the second crop year, with an increase in production of 20 kg/tree as well as an increase in the percentage of fruits with a size higher than 22 (165–196 g/fruit) according to the Codex Alimentarius standards. These findings indicate that the reincorporation of minerals extracted by the harvest into the soil and the plant nutrient status are useful tools to guide crop fertilization management when fine-tuned to local soil chemical conditions and crop requirements to minimize nutrient losses.
