The main aim of this thesis is to reveal the importance of the development aid in Kenya and to demonstrate, on the example of Slovak republic, which type of aid plays more important role -- wheather the official or unofficial aid. Effectivness of aid in Kenya is evaluated on the basis of correlation of the amounts of development aid and indices which show improvement or degradation of economic and social situation of the country. The significance of the official and unofficial aid is evaluated by comparing the projects that are supported by ODA and projects supported by non-governmental organizations on the basis of financial criterium and the reach of the projects. The contribution of this thesis is to show effectivness of development aid in poor countries on the example of Kenya. The work has three chapters. The object of the first chapter is to present economic and social situation in Kenya and individual factors which can help her to get over the underdevelopment. The second chapter offers characteristics of individual donors and evaluates the relevance of development aid. The last chapter presents concrete projects of ODA of Slovak republic and of Slovak non-governmental organizations and evaluates which of the two types of aid is more important.

The thesis analyses development cooperation in Kenya, including an example of personally realized development project. The goal of the thesis is to find out what is the current state and direction of development cooperation in Kenya, demonstrate some of the problems of Kenya and their possible solutions using an example of personally visited region and realized development project and to determine whether this project corresponds to the current trend of development cooperation in the world and in Kenya. The first chapter characterizes the current political, economic and social situation on Kenya. Following parts analyze the Kenyan development strategies and current trends in the area of development cooperation at the global level and in Kenya. The last chapter describes personally realized development project which is then evaluated from the point of view of new paradigm of development cooperation and concerning the overall impact.

This thesis explores the work of Japanese film-maker Mizoguchi Kenji (1898-1956) through an analysis of key film texts in their social, cultural and industrial contexts. Since coming to international prominence in the 1950s, Mizoguchi has been placed in western accounts of Japanese cinema, alongside Kurosawa and Ozu, as one of that country’s most celebrated auteurs. As we shall see, this positioning has tended to cast Mizoguchi in a certain critical light which has subsequently been challenged from different perspectives. Mizoguchi’s film career, which began in 1923, spanned the silent era and sound films, continued under Imperialist rule (1930-1945) and the American occupation (1945-1952), but gained world attention only in the last four years of his life. His life and films have since been the subject of academic studies, festival retrospectives and television documentaries, both in Japan and in the west (notably the United States). He is acclaimed, like Federico Fellini, Satyajit Ray and Ingmar Bergman, as one of the handful of film-makers who have had a profound influence upon world cinema, although in the west his reputation has remained under the shadow of his better-known countrymen Kurosawa and Ozu. This study will seek to critique rather than celebrate that legacy. But Mizoguchi’s career as a whole also has much to tell us about the history of Japanese cinema and its relationship to culture and society. And in re-focussing critical attention upon the context which informed his work, this thesis will offer a re-appraisal of his auteurist status, and suggest new ways of considering the issue of authorship.

This thesis describes the results of a study of 33 tephra layers found within two peat sections near Anchor Point and Homer, Alaska, on the lower Kenai Peninsula. Numerous lower Cook Inlet volcanoes have been active through the Holocene. Tephra layers found at these two sites provide a partial record of their eruptive activity. The hazards that accompany this activity have increased as populations and commercial activities expand and air traffic over the region increases. The tephras analyzed for this study provide an initial geochemical database for the lower Cook Inlet volcanoes. The database is available in electronic format at the U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Volcano Observatory. The Anchor Point and Homer sections contain tephras from Augustine, Iliamna, and possibly other volcanoes in the region. Anchor Point, the principal section for this study, yielded ten 14C ages ranging from 645 ± 85 cal yr BP at a depth of 14 cm to 8810 ± 205 cal yr BP at 270 cm. Seventeen tephra layers from Anchor Point and 16 from Homer were characterized by stratigraphic position, age, and grain-discrete major-element geochemical analysis by electron microprobe. Nine tephra layers are correlated by geochemical analysis between the Anchor Point and Homer sections. Several newly discovered tephra layers have been correlated with source volcanoes, three with Augustine and at least seven with Iliamna Volcano. The average recurrence interval of tephra fall events at Anchor Point is approximately 520 yrs.

Miyazawa Kenji (1896-1933) was writing in the early 20'" century, yet he is currently the most prolifically published literary figure in picture book form and these pictorialisations are widely promulgated to children and throughout cultural and educational institutions in Japan. Given Kenji's prominence as a devoutly Buddhist author with a unique position within Japanese literature, the thesis operates on the premise that the picture books are working, inter aha, to decode or encode the inherent Buddhist ideologies of self, identity and subjectivity and that the picture book re-versions are attempting to be 'authentic' to these. (Unlike many other works adapted for picture books, Kenji's original words are left intact.) Such selflother interactions are important to the construction of identity because childhood itself is an ideological construction premised on assumptions about what it means to be a child and what it means to 'be'; in other words, "such fictions are premised on culturally specific ideologies of identity" (McCallum, 1999: 263). Picture books, with their two forms of narrative discourse, pictures and words, are more ideologically powerful than words alone because the pictures also carry attitudes and therefore doubly inscribe both the explicit and implicit ideologies inherent in the words. -- By utilising Miyazawa Kenji's non-humanist Buddhist ideologies as a basis, this investigation compares how different artists are (re-)inscribing these ideals in the most frequently pidorialised versions of his children's tales. It is primarily an investigation into how the artistic responses re-situate or respond to ideologies of self and subjectivity inherent in a select corpus of focused pre-existing texts. Ultimately, the thesis shows how different pictures can shape story and how the implied reader is interpellated into certain subject positions and viewpoints from which to read the texts. <p> Streams in the Kenai River watershed are characterized by a fish-rich environment, with competing interests between commercial industry and recreational users. Resource managers strive to balance the needs of both these user groups while maintaining the sustainability of the resource. The ability to estimate future river conditions could help maintain the resource, and a strong, sustainable economy on the Kenai Peninsula. </p><p> This research used the Army Corps of Engineers Hydrological Modeling System (HMS), which transforms rainfall to river discharge. The main goal was to define a set of parameters that were calibrated using an event based strategy, and concurrent rainfall and discharge data. The model was calibrated and validated in three sub-basins located in different environmental settings (i.e. lowlands, mid, and high elevation). In addition, the Kenai River watershed, as a whole, was modeled. </p><p> Due to limited concurrent datasets, a combination of current and historic rainfall and discharge data was used in the calibration. Over the period of time between the historic data and the current data, no major changes in the watershed were detected. </p><p> Model results at the sub-basin and watershed scale provided reasonable results over the modeling period. Each sub-basin maintained errors below 10% for the calibration and only slight increase in the error for the verification trials. It was found that during an extreme precipitation event, the model did not perform within reasonable bounds.</p>

Hlavním cílem mé diplomové práce je analyzovat současný stav cestovního ruchu v Keni, jeho význam v národním hospodářství a zjistit, zda má země dostatek předpokladů být destinací cestovního ruchu. Stanovila jsem si dva dílčí cíle: 1. Navrhnout, jakou novou strategii by měla Keňa uplatňovat v rozvoji cestovního ruchu, aby z části dokázala zmírnit chudobu svých obyvatel, tzn. jak by cestovní ruch mohl pozitivně ovlivnit životní úroveň keňských obyvatel. Budu se věnovat především alternativním formám cestovního ruchu. 2. Zjistit, jak si Keňa stojí v rámci cestovního ruchu mezi ostatními africkými zeměmi. V diplomové práci pracuji s následujícími hypotézami, které se pokusím potvrdit či případně vyvrátit. Hypotéza 1: Keňa má dostatek předpokladů být destinací cestovního ruchu. Hypotéza 2: Rozvoji cestovního ruchu nejvíce brání nedostatečná suprastruktura a nevzdělané obyvatelstvo. Hypotéza 3: Keňa disponuje dobrými podmínkami pro rozvoj alternativních forem cestovního ruchu. Hypotéza 4: Keňa má před sebou velkou budoucnost v oblasti cestovního ruchu v rámci afrických zemí. Hypotéza 5: Keňa se začíná orientovat na nové formy cestovního ruchu. Záměrům a cíli diplomové práce odpovídá struktura členění.

The thesis examines the Kenya's cut-flower industry in the wider context of global commodity networks. The Kenya's floriculture sector as a part of these networks has been influenced by notions of environmental and social responsibility in the past two decades. The first part of the thesis describes floriculture in Kenya and the cut flower supply chain. The second half analyses current ethical trading practice in the flower industry in Kenya. In this respect codes of conduct which embody notions of responsible business in practice are discussed here. In view of the fact that codes can't guarantee adequate working conditions to flower farm workers in many cases the thesis tries to explain why this concept of ethical trade failed.

L'historiographie de la Révolution Française au japon est marquée comme en France par l'apparition de deux tendances opposées ; dès les années cinquante, donc plus tôt qu'en France, deux écoles, celle de Tokyo et celle de Kyoto, entrent en conflit. Kawano Kenji (1916-1996) est l'un des représentants les plus marquants de cette deuxième tendance, celle de Kyoto. A travers l'évolution personnelle de ce chercheur, sont abordés des problèmes qui recouvrent partiellement ceux que connait l'historiographie française à la même époque, mais qui témoignent aussi de préoccupations plus particulièrement japonaises. Au premier rang, le problème de la transition du féodalisme au capitalisme, et celui qui en découle de la modernisation, économique et politique. Mais l'apparition de l'école de Kyoto est aussi à rattacher plus largement à la situation particulière que connait au Japon la science historique, à la manière dont est écrite l'histoire dans ce pays, et aux structures de recherche en milieu universitaire. Au delà, les rapports de l'histoire avec les autres champs des sciences humaines entrent en ligne de compte, dans une perspective qui recoupe en partie la démarche de Fernand Braudel. Se pose aussi la question de l'influence des modèles de pensée d'origine étrangère, comme l'école des annales et la nouvelle histoire, ou en particulier dans le cas de la Révolution française, les recherches publiées en langue anglaise.

The architecture and morphology of a mountain range is fundamentally controlled by the combination of rock uplift and distribution of precipitation. This relationship attributes fluctuations in climate to the erosion of orogens, sedimentation rates, and geodynamics of the crust. Glaciers are the most effective climate driven erosive processes, where the frequency of glacial periods has a direct impact on the structure of mountain ranges through time. The late Cenozoic global cooling period was the beginning of a series of many glaciations which increased erosion in orogens experiencing fast rock uplift. We characterize the threshold for the onset of effective glacial erosion and record the increase in erosion rate during the late Cenozoic in the Chugach and Kenai Mountains of Alaska. We utilized low temperature thermochronometry and cosmogenic dating to constrain the spatial and temporal distribution of exhumation and glacial history in order to characterize the net effect of glaciers on an orogen that experiences slow rock uplift. We constrain the spatial distribution of exhumation and characterize the landscape along the Kenai Peninsula, underlain by the transition from flat slab to normal subduction. The region is characterized by old AHe ages which mimic the subduction angle of the down going plate and decrease away from an exhumational hotspot at a syntax in the Chugach Mountains. We attribute the long term exhumational characteristic of the Kenai Peninsula to subduction and underplating of sediment shed from the accreting Yakutat microplate to the east. A delineation of the glacial history using 10Be cosmogenic dating depict a series of glacial advances which date to the early and late Wisconsin. We find that the asynchronuity of glaciation across maritime and continental Alaska is controlled by steep orographic precipitation gradients which result from upper plate deformation. Finally, we observe an increase in erosion since the late Cenozoic using both AHe and cosmogenic dating and conclude that it is possible for the onset of effective glacial erosion in regions that experience slow to moderate rock uplift and that climate drives erosion rates in these regions.<br>Ph. The thesis discusses economic development and fight against poverty in Kenya.The aim is to prove that the development assistance is not the the main incentive for the economic development in Kenya and the kenyan government should focus on alternative development paths. The paper tries to analyze development assistance and to find arguments against it, describes other forms of capital inflow, such as foreign trade, foreign investment and microfinance. The first chapter defines the basic concepts and puts the arguments for and against development aid. The second chapter discusses alternative paths of development. In the third chapter the paper starts with the analytical section where political and economic situation in Kenya, development aid and business environment are analyzed. The importance of foreign trade, foreign investment and microfinance is demonstrated. The last chapter analyzes the selected microfinance institutions in Kenya and it contains a case study from the field.

This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the "phenomenon" of politicization of etnicity in Kenya, its impacts on temporary situation and future development of the country. Through the analysis of the sources and development of the phenomenon it makes an effort to explain the motives of the post-election violence in 2007 and review the temporary constitutional reform process focused on its impacts on political ethnization and minimalization of the social conflict. However for a long time, Kenya used to be perceived as a politically stable and prosperous African country, where many European tourists spent their holidays, the post-election violence in 2007 harshly damaged the positive international reputation of the country. Fortunately, an agreement between the two main presidential candidates was promptly reached and finally in August 2010 Kenyans peacefully passed the constitutional reform. There are doubts, whether they manage to reconcile the latent grievances of the past and settle ethnic conflicts of the Kenyan society to become a model to other multiethnical countries in Africa.

This thesis is focused on the elimination of slums in Kenya. It is currently facing a huge challenge - improving the quality of life of slum dwellers. Despite the large amount of efforts developed to promote the slums in Kenya, the situation remains problematic and local slums has already grown to such proportions that it was not easy efficient and sustainable. Thesis is divided into three subsequent chapters. The first chapter focuses on the economic, political and social situation in Kenya. In the second chapter I explain term slum, it's history, the life of slum dwellers and I also think about causes of their origin and subsequent dynamic urban sprawl. The third chapter is focused on the actual Kenyan slums and projects dedicated to tackle the challenges of their elimination. My goal is to identify the causes that lead to the extension of slums. Further I want to analyze how the issue of slums in Kenya is solved and whether these projects are effective and sustainable.

This dissertation aims to examine the manner in which the concept of autonomy (jiritsu) is treated in modern and contemporary Japanese literature. This examination will be performed by analysing the autonomous attitude of a contemporary Japanese writer Nakagami Kenji (1946–1992). This dissertation focuses on examining Nakagami Kenji’s ambivalent attitude towards his act of writing. We will explore the manner in which his act of writing appears to be a paradox between self-identification and the integration into the collective. Then, we will observe the possibility in which Nakagami’s ambivalent attitude is extended to cover Maruyama Masao’s relative definition of autonomy and Karatani Kōjin’s interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s notion of freedom and responsibility. Nakagami’s attempt is certainly not confined to only his works. The notion of autonomy may be applied to perceive a similar thought that was represented by previous writers. We will also examine various never-ending autonomous attempts expressed by Sakaguchi Ango, Miyazawa Kenji and Nakahara Chūya. Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)<br>This dissertation aims to examine the manner in which the concept of autonomy (jiritsu) is treated in modern and contemporary Japanese literature. This examination will be performed by analysing the autonomous attitude of a contemporary Japanese writer Nakagami Kenji (1946–1992). This dissertation focuses on examining Nakagami Kenji’s ambivalent attitude towards his act of writing. We will explore the manner in which his act of writing appears to be a paradox between self-identification and the integration into the collective. Then, we will observe the possibility in which Nakagami’s ambivalent attitude is extended to cover Maruyama Masao’s relative definition of autonomy and Karatani Kōjin’s interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s notion of freedom and responsibility. Nakagami’s attempt is certainly not confined to only his works. The notion of autonomy may be applied to perceive a similar thought that was represented by previous writers. We will also examine various never-ending autonomous attempts expressed by Sakaguchi Ango, Miyazawa Kenji and Nakahara Chūya. For this dissertation I studied groundwater and surface water interactions in the Kenai Lowlands, Alaska. In particular, I examine two important aspects of groundwater and surface water interactions: 1) Groundwater's influence on surface-water temperature; and 2) Groundwater's role in forming hydrologic flow paths that can connect uplands to streamside wetlands and streams. Chapter 2 investigates the controls on stream temperature in salmon-bearing headwater streams in two common hydrogeologic settings: 1) drainage-ways, which are low-gradient streams that flow through broad valleys; and 2) discharge-slopes, which are high gradient streams that flow through narrow valleys. The results from chapter 2 showed significant differences in stream temperatures between the two hydrogeologic settings. Observed stream temperatures were higher in drainage-way sites than in discharge-slope sites, and showed strong correlations as a continuous function with the calculated topographic metric flow-weighted slope. Additionally, modeling results indicated that the potential for groundwater discharge to moderate stream temperature is not equal between the two hydrogeologic settings, with groundwater having a greater moderating effect on stream temperature at the low gradient drainage-way sites. Chapter 3 examines the influence of groundwater on juvenile coho salmon winter habitat along the Anchor River. Two backwater habitats were selected from the larger set of 25 coho overwintering sites from a previous study for an in-depth hydrologic analysis. The results from chapter 3 showed that the type of groundwater discharge (i.e., focused versus diffuse groundwater discharge) can play an important role in determining habitat suitability in these backwater sites. During winter, focused discharge from a local groundwater seep maintained higher surface-water temperatures and higher concentrations of dissolved oxygen compared to the site with more diffuse groundwater discharge. Chapter 4 investigates the linkages along hydrologic flow paths among alder (Alnus spp.) stands, streamside wetlands, and headwater streams. Chapter 4 tested four related hypotheses: 1) groundwater nitrate concentrations are greater along flow paths with alder compared to flow paths without alder; 2) on hillslopes with alder, groundwater nitrate concentrations are highest when alder stands are located near the streamside wetlands at the base of the hillslope; 3) primary production of streamside wetland vegetation is N limited and wetlands are less N limited when alder stands are located nearby along flow paths; and 4) stream reaches at the base of flow paths with alder have higher nitrate concentrations than reaches at the base of flow paths without alder. The results from chapter 4 showed that groundwater nitrate concentrations were highest along flow paths with alder, however no difference was observed between flow paths with alder located near versus alder located further from streamside wetlands. Vegetation had a greater response to N fertilization in streamside wetlands that were connected to flow paths without alder and less when alder stands were near. Finally, higher nitrate concentrations were measured in streams at the base of flow paths with alder. The combined results of this dissertation showed that, in the Kenai Lowlands, groundwater and surface water interactions have a direct influence on the local ecology and that a fundamental understanding of the hydrology can aid in the successful management and protection of this unique and important ecosystem.

The aim of my Thesis is to analyze the way how Kenya gained independence, how the process of democratization had conducted and the development in the 21th century. The reason for the focus on Kenya is that it is a country which I am interested in and I want to get the new information. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives information about the current economic, geographic, demographic and political situation in the country. The second chapter focuses on the historical development till 1944. Includes description of the oldest inhabitants of the planet Earth, the original inhabitants of the country, settlers and colonizers. Year 1944 is chosen deliberately, this is the year when first Kenya had been elected to the National Assembly. The third chapter deals with the situation in the country until 1963, when the country was granted independence. This chapter deals with the rebellion Mau - Mau, congresses at which was discussed the constitution of an independent country, important personal proces sof independence - the first and the second president Jomo Kennyat and Daniel Arap Moi's regime. The fourth chapter gives information about the process of democratization. Here I describe how the process of democratization in Kenya had conducted and all the things that happened in the country since independence. The fifth chapter seeks to answer the question of why we can not say that Kenya is a democratic state. Describe here the notion of tribalism, which has a major impact on what is happening in the country. The members of the nation are loyal to their ethnicity in any case, and therefore it is not possible to develop democracy in the country in the literal sense.

Avec une telle dichotomie, opposant "bonne" démocratie et "mauvais" autoritarisme, il ne peut y avoir de pays qui soit vraiment démocratique tout en étant autoritaire. De même, tous les autres problèmes relatifs à une réalité en devenir ne peuvent pas être saisis dans un tel cadre théorique. Les théâtres du Moyen-Orient et de l’Afrique du Nord montrent pourtant que nous ne pouvons pas discuter les questions de la démocratisation sans prêter attention aux questions de dépendance de l'économie rentière, de l'histoire et des relations internationales. En Tunisie, en mettant en place un système efficace de répartition des rentes dans les différents secteurs de l’économie, le pouvoir a créé une classe moyenne favorable au régime autoritaire. Ce dernier bénéficie du soutien des États-Unis et de la France qui fournissent une assistance technique dans les domaines de l’éducation et de la culture, investissent et offrent une importante aide économique. Et c’est ainsi qu’il est parvenu à maintenir un système autoritaire durable<br>There are obvious limits to the theory of democratization focusing on the actions of political players and their strategies, as it often neglects both social and economic history. Illustrating the dichotomy between the "good" being democracy, and the "bad" being authoritarianism, this theory shows that there can be the existence of a country that is democratic while being authoritarian at the same time. However, all other problems related to such a theoretical framework are often than not considered to be a reality. The Middle East and North Africa both show that we cannot discuss issues of democratization without paying attention to matters involving the rentier economy, history and international relations. In Tunisia, by establishing an efficient distribution of rent in various sectors of the economy, the ruling power has created a middle class supporting the authoritarian regime. Also, found within the scheme is the supporting logistics provided by the United States and France, both providing technical assistance in the areas of education and culture, invest and substantial economic aid. The powers that be enjoy popular support because people fear the government. They do not fear the current use of power in place, but the arbitrary use of it that the rulers have control over. The aim of the project is to develop multivariate measurement anda,analysis methods of the skeletal muscle physiology. One of the methods used to scanthe muscle is functional ultrasound. In a study performed by the project group datawas aquired, where test subjects were instructed to follow a certain exercise scheme,which was measured. Since there currently is no superior method to analyze the result-ing data (in form of ultrasound video sequences) several methods are being looked at.One considered method is called Independent Vector Analysis (IVA). IVA is a statisticalmethod to find independent components in a mix of components. This Master’s Thesisis about segmenting and analyzing the ultrasound images with help of IVA, to validateif it is a suitable method for this kind of tasks.First the algorithm was tested on generated mixed data to find out how well itperformed. The results were very accurate, considering that the method only usesapproximations. Some expected variation from the true value occured though.When the algorithm was considered performing to satisfactory, it was tested on thedata gathered by the study and the result can very well reflect an approximation of truesolution, since the resulting segmented signals seem to move in a possible way. But themethod has weak sides (which have been tried to be minimized) and all error analysishas been done by human eye, which definitly is a week point. But for the time being itis more important to analyze trends in the signals, rather than analyze exact numbers.So as long as the signals behave in a realistic way the result can not be said to becompletley wrong. Previous issue date: 2009<br>Mudança estrutural e desemprego parecem ser características do processo de desenvolvimento econômico. O objetivo dessa tese é estudar a dinâmica da mudança estrutural usando a noção de setor verticalmente integrado e o modelo de produção com trabalho apenas de Pasinetti (1973, 1981, 1988, 1993). No Capítulo I, “Introdução”, apresentamos o objetivo da tese e a relevância de se usar um modelo multi-setorial de crescimento com taxas de crescimento e comportamento diferenciados tanto dos setores quanto das famílias para lidar com a questão do desenvolvimento econômico e com a mudança estrutural que o caracteriza. A questão do consumo sempre foi negligenciada em modelos de inspiração sraffiana, muito mais preocupados com o lado da produção ao contrário de outras escolas keynesianas. No Capítulo II, fazemos uma extensão ao modelo pasinettiano para contemplar diferentes perfis de consumo e entender como a heterogeneidade das famílias contribui para explicar a mudança estrutural. Verificamos que essa heterogeneidade se mostrou importante para a explicar a necessidade da emergência de instituições, como um banco central, para garantir a estabilidade de preços (através de uma escolha adequada de numerário) e uma taxa justa – no sentido de preservar o trabalho incorporado nas mercadorias - para transferir poder de compra entre as famílias ao longo do tempo (a taxa ‘natural’ de juros de Pasinetti). Uma ilustração numérica do modelo se encontra no ApêndiceA. Apesar da dificuldade da manutenção do pleno emprego em um modelo de mudança estrutural e do impacto da idéia de oferta ilimitada de mão-de-obra na literatura sobre o desenvolvimento econômico, essa abordagem foi ignorada pelas escolas pós-keynesianas. No Capítulo III, é feita uma extensão ao modelo de produção com trabalho apenas para considerar a dualidade entre os setores. O modelo dualista de produção com trabalho apenas e diferentes perfis de consumo é uma interpretação pasinettiana do modelo dualista proposto por Arthur Lewis (1954) do ponto de vista de um modelo de mudança estrutural. O resultado da análise nos pareceu promissor porque ilumina o papel que os setores de subsistência têm na economia, não apenas como reserva de mão-de-obra a ser usada pelos setores modernos para se expandir, mas também para estabilizar a demanda efetiva. Naturalmente, a presença cada vez maior dos setores de serviços na economia é também uma manifestação de mudança estrutural. No Capítulo IV é examinado quanto os setores de serviços contribuem para a produtividade do trabalho da economia como um todo e de cada um dos setores em particular no Brasil entre 1990 e 2003, usando a noção de setor verticalmente integrado desenvolvida por Pasinetti (1973). Os resultados obtidos evidenciam que os setores de serviços têm menor produtividade que os demais setores, mas essa diferença diminui quando consideramos a produtividade total ao invés da produtividade direta. A razão principal é o efeito induzido pela produtividade maior dos outros setores sobre os setores de serviços. Todavia o comportamento dos setores de serviços não é homogêneo, o setor “Comunicações”, no caso, apresenta produtividade direta do trabalho bastante elevada e não muito distante da produtividade total, sendo que o efeito induzido dos setores agrícolas e manufatureiros, apesar de menor do que os outros setores de serviços, ainda é expressivo. A base de dados e as tabelas auxiliares usadas nessa análise estão no Apêndice B. Finalmente, no Capítulo V, “Conclusão”, apresentamos as conclusões da tese e fazemos duas digressões. A primeira digressão, sobre consumo, ressalta a importância do aprendizado nas relações de consumo e a necessidade de se considerar o contexto institucional para se definir o objeto desse aprendizado. Na segunda digressão, sobre o emprego, discutimos como o desemprego (ou subemprego) se manifesta como privação da autonomia do indivíduo e como mecanismo gerador de exclusão social e a necessidade de se identificar o tipo de desenvolvimento econômico que se deseja. Terminamos a tese sugerindo extensões e pesquisas promissoras que podem ser feitas nessa mesma linha de pesquisa. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>Structural changes and unemployment seems to be characteristics of economic development processes. The purpose of this thesis is to study the dynamic of structural change using the notion of vertically integrated sector and the pure labour model developed by Pasinetti (1973, 1981, 1988, 1993). In Chapter I, we present the objective of the thesis and the relevance of using a multi-sectoral growth model with different growth rates and behaviour of both sectors and families to deal with the issue of economic development and structural change. The question of consumption has always been neglected in models of Sraffian inspiration, much more concerned with the production side as opposed to other Keynesian schools. In Chapter II, we extend the pure labour model in order to deal with different consumption profiles and to understand how the heterogeneity of families help to explain the structural change. We found that this heterogeneity proved to be important for explaining the need for the emergence of institutions like a central bank to ensure price stability (through an appropriate choice of numéraire) and a fair rate - to preserve the labour incorporated in commodities - for transferring purchasing power of families over time (the Pasinetti’s 'natural' rate of interest). An illustration of the numerical model is in Appendix A. Despite the difficulty of maintaining full employment in a model of structural change and the impact of the idea of unlimited supply of labour in the literature on economic development, this approach has been ignored by the post-Keynesian schools. In Chapter III, Pasinetti’s pure labour model is extended to consider dualism among sectors. The dual pure labour model with different consumption profiles is a Pasinettian interpretation of the dualistic model of Lewis’ inside structural change model point of view. The result seemed promising because it illuminates the role of the subsistence sector in the economy, not only as a reserve labour force to be used by modern sectors to expand, but also to stabilize the effective demand. Of course, the growing presence of service industries in the economy is also a manifestation of structural change. In Chapter IV, it is examined how much the services sectors contribute to the labour productivity of the economy as a whole and for each of the sectors in particular in Brazil between 1990 and 2003, using the notion of vertically integrated sector developed by Pasinetti (1973). The results show that the services sectors have lower productivity than the other sectors, but the difference diminishes when considering the total productivity instead of direct productivity. The main reason is the effect induced by increased productivity of other sectors on the services sectors. However the behaviour of the services sector is not homogenous, the sector "Communications" in the case, has direct labour productivity very high and not far from the total productivity labour, and the effect produced by the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, although lower the other service sectors, is still significant. The database and the auxiliary tables used in this analysis are in Appendix B. Finally, in Chapter V, we present the conclusions of the thesis and make two digressions. The first digression, on consumption, highlights the importance of learning in consumer relations and the need to consider the institutional context to define the object of learning. In the second digression, on the employment, we discussed how the unemployment (or underemployment) is expressed as the deprivation of personal autonomy and as the source of social exclusion and the need to identify the type of economic development that we want. This thesis attempts to give the increasing importance of Ottoman port cities in the urban hierarchy during the nineteenth century and analyzes the urban transformation of these cities under the forces of changing administrative and socio-economic structure of the empire. The impact of European economic penetration and Ottoman Tanzimat Reforms were indicated as major causes for this changing structure.
Beirut, being one of the major port cities of the Ottoman Empire is studied as a case study. The changing administrative and socio-economic structure of the Empire created an urban transformation which changed the city to a cosmopolitan trade capital from a small fortified port city.

Tout au long de leur histoire, les Japonais ont cultivé précieusement leurs propres traditions, tout en assimilant lescultures voisines, celles d’Asie continentale (Chine, Corée), puis celles apportées par l’Occident. Pourtant, aujourd’hui,au début du XXIe siècle, leur vie quotidienne est marquée par le monde occidental et il nous semble que « la traditionjaponaise » commence à tomber en désuétude. Le mot « tradition » prend même une couleur exotique à leurs yeux, etdésormais, ce sont les Occidentaux qui tournent leur regard vers la tradition japonaise. Parmi eux, deux compositeursfrançais, Laurent Martin (1959-) et Jean-Luc Hervé (1960-). L’objet de leurs recherches est le moteur de leur créationmusicale et leur intérêt pour le Japon ne se limite pas à des stéréotypes. Laurent Martin s’intéresse au premier chef à lalittérature japonaise et Jean-Luc Hervé est attiré avant tout par l’agencement du paysage japonais (architecture, jardins).Tous deux sont en quête de ce qui est ignoré ou oublié des Japonais eux-mêmes : « la tradition japonaise », qui est digned’être perpétuée ou remise à jour. Les centres d’intérêt de ces deux compositeurs ont nourri le sujet de notre recherche.Après avoir étudié les particularités des cultures japonaise et française, leurs points communs et ce qui les différencie,nous analyserons Poèmes japonais de Laurent Martin et Effet lisière de Jean-Luc Hervé sous divers angles. À partir deces deux modèles musicaux, nous nous demanderons comment les Japonais eux-mêmes peuvent appréhender leurspropres traditions au sein de la société moderne<br>During their long history, the Japanese people had managed at the same time to cultivate carefully their own traditionswhile integrating the surrounding cultures, first those of continental Asia (China, Corea), then the Western cultures. Andyet, nowadays, it seems that the daily life of the Japanese people has become more and more westernized while the socalledJapanese tradition is receding. For the Japanese, the term itself of “tradition” seems to take an exotic meaning andhenceforth, Westerners are now mainly taking interest in the Japanese tradition, and among them, two contemporaryFrench composers, Laurent Martin (1959-) and Jean-Luc Hervé (1960-). The object of their research constitutes thedynamic of their musical creation and their interest in Japan is not confined to stereotypes. Laurent Martin’s maininterest lies in Japanese literature while Jean-Luc Hervé is attracted above all by the layout of Japanese landscapes (inarchitecture and gardens). Both are delving into what the Japanese people are ignoring or forgetting, i.e., the “Japanesetradition” which merits to be perpetuated and brought up to date. The fields of interest of the two composers are theobject of this present research. After studying the particularities of Japanese and French cultures, their commun featuresand their differences, we will analyse Laurent Martin’s Poèmes japonais and Jean-Luc Hervé, Effet lisière from variousperspectives. From those two musical models we will then ask ourselves how Japanese people can assess their owntraditions within modern society

Rozprawa powstała w następstwie badań nad specyfiką systemu politycznego Republiki Kenii, która jest państwem wieloetnicznym. W Kenii w 2010 roku został wprowadzony system polityczny typu power-sharing, w którym nastąpiło zmniejszenie koncentracji władzy i czerpania z niej korzyści przez dominujące wielkością i siłą grupy etniczne dzięki dopuszczeniu do udziału w rządzeniu i procesach decyzyjnych elit politycznych wywodzących się z innych grup etnicznych. Służą temu specyficzne instytucje (rozumiane jako zespoły reguł) odnoszące się bezpośrednio lub pośrednio zwłaszcza do kwestii ustanawiania i funkcjonowania egzekutywy, legislatywy, partii politycznych, systemu wyborczego, struktury terytorialnej i decentralizacji. Hybrydowość systemu kenijskiego polega na łączeniu instytucji dwóch odmiennych modeli power-sharing: centrypetalizmu i konsocjonalizmu. Celem rozprawy była identyfikacja i zbadanie funkcjonowania centrypetalnych i konsocjonalnych instytucji w kenijskim systemie politycznym oraz stwierdzenie, jaki jest wpływ ich łączenia w ramach jednego systemu na łagodzenie istniejących napięć etnicznych oraz osiąganie wyższego poziomu stabilizacji politycznej w Kenii. Ponadto celem rozprawy było przeanalizowanie sposobów, w jaki instytucje polityczne pochodzące z dwóch przeciwstawnych na płaszczyźnie teoretycznej modeli power-sharing się uzupełniają dla realizacji tych celów. Zakres rozprawy obejmował następujące kwestie: problematykę systemów politycznych; teorię power-sharing, w tym modele centrypetalny, konsocjonalny i hybrydowy; problematykę etniczności, grupy etnicznej i konfliktu etnicznego; historię polityczną i specyfikę wieloetniczności Kenii; instytucje kenijskiego systemu politycznego, w szczególności należące do systemowych rozwiązań typu power-sharing.<br>The dissertation was written as a result of research on the specificity of the political system of the Republic of Kenya, which is a multi-ethnic state. In Kenya, a power-sharing political system was introduced in 2010, within which took place: decreasing in the concentration of power and deriving of benefits by ethnic groups dominating in size and power, due to admitting political elites originating from other ethnic groups to participate in the governance and decision-making processes. This was achieved by specific institutions (understood as sets of rules) relating directly or indirectly, in particular, to the issue of establishing and functioning of the executive, legislature, political parties, the electoral system, territorial structure and decentralisation. The hybrid nature of the Kenyan system consists in combining the institutions of two different power-sharing models: centripetalism and consociationalism. The aim of the dissertation was to identify and examine the functioning of centripetal and consociational institutions in the Kenyan political system and to determine the impact of combining them within a single system on alleviating the existing ethnic tensions and achieving a higher level of political stabilisation in Kenya. Moreover, the aim of the dissertation was to analyse the formula in which political institutions derived from two power-sharing models which are theoretically opposed to each other, complement to each other in order to achieve these goals. The scope of the dissertation covered the following issues: political systems; power-sharing theory, including centripetal, consociational and hybrid models; issues of ethnicity, ethnic group and ethnic conflict; the political history and specificity of Kenya's multi-ethnicity; institutions of the Kenyan political system, in particular those belonging to systemic power-sharing solutions.

Cette recherche porte sur le langage cinématographique (ou mode de représentation) adopté par Mizoguchi en contraste avec le style classique hollywoodien. Notre hypothèse est que le refus de Mizoguchi de recourir au découpage classique et au gros-plan procurerait au spectateur une expérience de perception qui tendrait à se rapprocher de celle vécue par un spectateur de théâtre ou le témoin d’une action se déroulant dans notre monde physique.
Mizoguchi a débuté son métier au début des années 1920. Le cinéma japonais venait tout juste de prendre la voie d’un art nouveau en quittant son statut de simple captation de spectacles théâtraux. L’industrie cinématographique japonaise était alors en incubation marquée par diverses influences occidentales. Nous nous pencherons plus particulièrement sur les questions stylistiques à partir du moment où le cinéma japonais s’engageait dans le parlant en imitant le style classique hollywoodien. Ce cinéma dominant devenait une norme que Mizoguchi décida de ne pas suivre pour préférer un style caractérisé par des plans-séquences. Ce style plus « neutre » et «objectif » allait être encensé par Bazin après la guerre au moment où ce dernier découvrit notamment Welles et Wyler.
À partir de plusieurs extraits filmiques, nous analysons le plan-séquence mizoguchien comme substitution à une série de plans rapprochés qui se serait imposé normalement avec le style classique hollywoodien. Et ce, afin de discuter des enjeux de réalisme et de théâtralité soulevés par Bazin.<br>This research focuses on the film language (or mode of representation) chosen by Mizoguchi in contrast to the Hollywood classical style. Our hypothesis is that Mizoguchi’s refusal to resort to traditional cutting and close-up would give the viewer an experience of perception that would tend to be get closer to the one experienced by a stage audience or viewers witnessing an action taking place in our physical world.
Mizoguchi made his entry into the profession in the early 20s. At that time, Japanese cinema just recently became a new art by leaving its status of a mere capture of theatrical performances. The Japanese film industry was being incubated with various Western influences. We will focus specifically on stylistic issues from the moment the Japanese cinema engages in talkies by imitating the Hollywood classical style. This dominant style became a standard practice which Mizoguchi decided not to follow to prefer sequence-shots. The long takes style was to be later praised by Bazin for its neutrality and objectivity when he discovered Welles and Wyler after the Second World War.
Through analysis of film excerpts, we compare Mizoguchi’s sequence-shots with cutting that would usually take place with the Hollywood classical style. This is to discuss the issues of realism and theatrics raised by Bazin.
