Abstract:
Objective To compare maternal morbidity between women undergoing delivery of twins who intend to labor with those women who do not intend to labor. Study Design This was a retrospective cohort study of women undergoing delivery of twins in a single maternal–fetal medicine practice between January 2005 and February 2018. We identified women with a twin delivery at gestational age ≥24 weeks and determined if they intended or did not intend to labor. Maternal outcomes were compared between the groups. Results A total of 788 patients were included, of whom 404 (51.3%) intended to labor and 384 (48.7%) did not intend to labor. Women who intended to labor had a high rate of vaginal delivery (VD; 79.7%). Overall, 45 (5.7%) women required blood transfusion; this was not significantly different between the groups (6.2 vs. 5.2%, p = 0.54). Women who intended to labor had a shorter hospital stay and lower blood loss. There were no significant differences for all other maternal outcomes. Conclusion In patients undergoing twin delivery, women who intend to labor have similar maternal morbidity compared with women who do not intend to labor. This supports current guidelines recommending providers offer a trial of VD for twin pregnancies.

Abstract:
Background: There is evidence of destructive effects of oxytocin use during labor on neurodevelopment. Purpose: This meta-analysis pooled all observational studies to determine the association between labor induction and the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children. Methods: All observational studies (case-control and cohort) were reviewed until September 2020 after searches of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, the gray literature, and conference proceedings. The pooled odds ratios (ORs), relative ratios (RRs), and 95% confidence intervals (CI (swere calculated as random effect estimates of association among studies. Results: All observational studies were reviewed, including 4 cohort studies including 2,885,743 participants and 3 casecontrol studies including 51,135 participants (10,961 with ADHD and 40,174 in control groups) with a sample size of 2,936,878 participants. The pooled estimates of OR and RR did not indicate a significant association between labor induction and ADHD among children (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.90–1.35) and (RR, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.96–1.24).Conclusions: The findings showed that labor induction is not associated with an increased risk of ADHD among children. However, more studies are needed to investigate the relationship between labor induction and ADHD.

Abstract:
Past studies have tended to investigate the relationship between trade and child labor under the traditional trade theories, while assuming that the trade in homogenous goods and the results show inconclusive evidence of a relationship. Hence, it would be interesting to investigate the trade effects of differentiated goods on child labor in the setting of the new trade theory. This study attempts to investigate the trade-induced child labor effects (selection, scale and technique effects) in selected Asian countries over the period from 1999 to 2013. The countries consist of the major South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, namely: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka and selected ASEAN countries, namely: Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, where child labor is most common. The results of this study confirm that the total impact of trade on child labor also needs to account for the selection effect, in addition to the scale and technique effects. The findings imply trade liberalization hampers the child labor market in the context of the trade in differentiated goods.

Abstract:
This article has 3 main objectives: (1) to assess the prevalence of child labor in Colombia, (2) to identify factors associated with child labor, and (3) to determine whether social protection programs have an association with the prevalence of child labor in the country. Using a cross-sectional study with data from the Colombian Demographic and Health Survey 2010, a working child was defined as a child who worked during the week prior to the survey in an activity other than household chores. Through descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariate regressions, it was found that child labor was associated with gender (boys were more likely to work), older age, ethnicity (children from indigenous communities were more likely to be workers), school dropout, disability (children with disabilities were less likely to be working), subsidized health social security system membership, and lower number of years of mother’s schooling. Furthermore, the results of this study suggest that children beneficiaries of the subsidy Familias en Acción were less likely to be working and that social protection programs were more effective to reduce child labor when targeting the lowest wealth quintiles of the Colombian population.

Abstract:
This cross-sectional study assessed the association between smoking and child and adolescent labor among 3,269 individuals 10 to 17 years of age in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, in southern Brazil (excluding higher income census tracts) in 1998. Adjusted hierarchical analysis was performed using Poisson regression. Prevalence of child labor was 13.8%. Current smoking prevalence was 6.3% in the sample as a whole (15.7% among working versus 3.4% among non-working children). In the multivariate analysis, smoking was significantly associated with child labor, with a prevalence ratio of 1.75 (95%CI: 1.30-2.36). Smoking was also associated with family characteristics (lower maternal schooling, mother currently without husband/partner, household members with alcohol or drug problems, single mother, and history of serious injuries), and the children's characteristics (age greater than 16 years, inadequate school performance, and externalizing behavior). The findings point to smoking as one of the harmful consequences of child labor and suggest the workplace as an appropriate target for smoking prevention.

Quispe, Trinidad Almendra Kristell, and Anchante Jhosselyn Milagros Villacrez. "Association between the number of hours that an adolescent from 10 to 17 years old performs domestic activity and the presence of pain." Bachelor's thesis, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/656054.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The pain in general, located in different areas of the body, presents with higher prevalence in adolescents. At the national level it is estimated that three out of four children between 6 and 17 years of age dedicate approximately 11 hours a week to activities within their home, which implies repetitive mechanics, muscle overloads and as a consequence the presence of pain. Objectives: Determine the association between the number of hours an adolescent does household activities and the presence of pain. Design: Cross sectional analytical observational that analyzes a secondary population data base of the INEI in urban and rural areas of the 24 departments of Peru and in the Constitutional Province of Callao. The data collection period was from October to December 2015. Patients/Materials: The secondary base of the INEI was included for children and adolescents from 10 to 17 years old. The dependent variable was defined as the presence of pain in the back, head or bones. The independent variable was defined as the number of hours dedicated to domestic activities and was categorized. The descriptive analysis shows absolute and relative frequencies for the categorical variables and in the bivariate, the Chi2 test was used. Finally, in the multivariate analysis, the Poisson model was used considering the 95% confidence intervals. Results: The results obtained according to our objectives show that adolescents who perform domestic activities for a time greater than 3 to 13 hours have a 10% lower risk of presenting pain compared to those of 1 to 3 hours (CI = 0.84 - 0.97) and a p value = 0.007. In a multivariate analysis adjusted to area, region, sex, age (years) -categorized, reason for which they carry out domestic work, adolescents who carry out dangerous tasks and work outside the home; adolescents who perform domestic activities in a time greater than 3 to 13 hours have a 5% lower risk of presenting pain compared to those of 1 to 3 hours (CI = 0.87 - 1.04) and a value of p = 0.320 Conclusion: Our study was able to determine that there is an association between the number of hours an adolescent performs domestic activities and the presence of pain.

Objective: Several studies had shown that use of antibiotics might be associated with the adverse outcome of pregnancy, while similar researches on antibiotic use during pregnancy in Taiwan remains inadequate. In this study, we would like to evaluate the association between child labor and the prescription patterns of antibiotics in pregnant women from outpatient clinic in Taiwan. Methods: Data set of a randomly sampled cohort registry in Taiwan, provided by the National Health Research Institutes was used. Pregnant women over 20 years old during 1999 to 2010 were included in this study. The prescription patterns of antibiotics in these women from outpatient clinic were described, and the association between child labor and the use of antibiotics was further evaluated with Chi-square test and Logistic regression model. Results: 88,533 pregnancies were identified. 53,549 (60.48%) were exposed to antibiotics, and 34,984 (39.52%) of them were not. Most pregnant women (n=47,523) were between 20 to 29 years old. 2,939 (3.32%) pregnant women had miscarriage, while 85,594 (96.68%) delivered their babies successfully. A total of 167,902 antibioitcs prescriptions were observed during 1999-2010 among these pregnant women. We found that the number of antibiotics prescriptions decreased from 28,820 to 5,330 during 2000-2004. The antibiotics exposure rate of these pregnant women was 60.48% per year during 1999-2010. The most frequent length of each antibiotic treatment was between 3 to 7 days per treatment in average. Beta-lactam (penicillins) was the most commonly prescribed antibiotics class with 25.61% prescriptions among all, and amoxicillin was the most-dispensed antibiotics. Upper respiratory infections amd inflammatory disease of cervix, vagina, and vilva are the major diagnosis among the top 10 antibiotics treatments. The most frequently used FDA pregnancy risk categorized-antibiotics were category B antibiotics. We found that use of antibiotics during pregnancy significantly decreased the odds (OR 0.66, 95CI:0.61−0.71) of miscarriage compared to the unexposed group. Antibiotics were more likely to be prescribed after the first prenatal exams, while pregnancy category D antibiotics were mosly prescribed before the first prenatal exams. Conclusion: We found that the use of antibiotics in pregnant women decreased after the drug guideline of antimicrobials changed in 2001. Also, we suspected that there is an impact on the number change of antibiotics prescriptions during 2003-2004 by the incident of SARS in 2003. Finally, we conclude that the antibiotics treatments were well controlled with the physicians’ careful selection of antibiotics’ FDA pregnancy risk category. Since infections are risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes, treatments with antibiotics may decrease the risk of miscarriage.

Okharedia, Akhabue Anthony. "The legal implications of harmonising labour laws in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/7762.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to explore the need for, and the legal implications of, harmonising labour laws in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Chapter One highlights a number of factors that call for the harmonisation of labour laws in the SADC region and discusses some of the reasons why labour laws are not well developed in the region. The influence of globalisation on labour standards in southern Africa and the influence of regionalism on the harmonisation of labour laws are discussed at length. The inference that could be drawn from this discussion is that for a regionalisation process in southern Africa to be successful, there is an urgent need to harmonise the region’s labour law system. This thesis confirms that Southern Africa has many lessons to learn from the regional harmonisation of labour law in the European Economic Community and the current European Union. The implementation of international labour standards in southern Africa is investigated. The main areas examined include (1) freedom of association, (2) collective bargaining, (3) forced labour and (4) discrimination. The findings of this investigation show that there is no uniformity in the implementation of International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards in the SADC region and, therefore, it is recommended labour law should be harmonised in terms of ILO standards. In respect of the benefits to be derived from the harmonisation process, an empirical investigation was conducted in the SADC region and the following is recommended: the harmonisation of labour law in the SADC region will help with the implementation of ILO standards, protection of workers against the economic power of employers in the workplace and maintaining similar benefits for migrants in the region.

When the United States joined the Great War—World War I—in April 1917, the Commonwealth of Kentucky remained both progressive and regressive. On the one hand, Progressives led by Governor Augustus Owsley Stanley and others had passed laws regulating child labor, workers’ compensation, and other socially beneficial measures. On the other hand, just ten years before war broke out in Europe, the state legislature had passed the Day Law, officially establishing segregation in schools. Abstract:
Commander Stassen returned to his naval duties after the San Francisco Conference adjourned. The war in Europe had ended. The United Nations was a major preoccupation in this period, and he used the momentum of the conference to publicize his convictions about the relationship between US foreign policy and the United Nations. He addressed his message to young Republicans, encouraging them to bring “an expanded vision of the realities of world conditions. The continuing clash with Russia at the UN makes it imperative that our Republican party proposes a positive far-reaching foreign policy in 1948 and seek Democratic agreement upon it as a bipartisan policy and enlist general public approval for it as an American policy.” Stassen’s passion for restructuring the United Nations to make it a fit vehicle for association with US foreign policy never dimmed. Confident of his ability to achieve higher office, Stassen decided not to run for the US Senate in 1946. This was a race he could have won against isolationist representative Henrik Shipstead, a paragon of Minnesota’s Farmer-Labor Party.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses freedom of association (FOA) and collective bargaining (CB) in global supply chains. FOA and CB rights are internationally recognized as core and fundamental human rights of global citizens. Thus, in 1998 when the International Labour Organization recast its objectives to promote “decent work,” FOA and CB were among the “core labor rights,” along with the freedom from child and forced labor and freedom from discrimination. The chapter uses diverse datasets from brands, auditing firms, multi stakeholder institutions (MSIs), and Better Work to assess FOA and CB in the global apparel industry and substantiate the arguments. The breadth of the data permits systematic and comprehensive analysis of the incidence and nature of FOA violations and the influence of FOA and CB on overall labor standards in the industry. FOA and CB show great promise for improving compliance with codes of conduct overall — the expressed goal of private regulation — but FOA and CB are the least supported rights in current private regulation efforts. In other words, most companies with private regulation programs are eschewing the very rights that could potentially improve the functioning of their private regulation programs.

A descriptive cross-sectional study of children between 7-14 years was conducted in Delhi, India. Child labour and school-going children (n=1000) of the same socioeconomic background were selected to know the impact of child labour on the behavior patterns of the children. The convenience sampling technique was adopted across Delhi slums to select the children. Children were subjected to strength and difficult questionnaire (SDQ). Results indicated that total difficulty is more prevalent in child labor (45.2%) as compared to school-going children (36%). Social conduct problem is the most prevalent behavioral problem (43.2%) found in child labor. The association between working status and higher conduct problems were found to be statistically significant. A strong positive association was found between working status and difficulty score.
