Abstract:
Ken Loach has been playing an important role for the British cinema for more than five decades now. His work has gained international regocnition and recieved various prestigious awards. Some of his films were even quite successful at the box office, nevertheless many people have still not heard of him. That is regrettable, because Loach is without doubt one of the best in his field. This paper is meant to show what distinguishes his films from the work of other directors and explains why his films are of such great value. Loach's career can be broadly divided into three stages, which will be specified in the first chapter of the paper. Afterwards three examples were chosen to illustrate Loach's working methods and the results of these. The films Kes (1969), Riff-Raff (1991) and My Name Is Joe (1998) are dealt with in separate chapters in chronological order, in this way the development of Loach's career can be reproduced. First the contents and backgrounds of the particular films will be briefly explained, followed by the analysis of important aspects of Loach's work based on the examples.

Abstract:
Ken Russell (1927-2011) was a renegade talent and the self-styled enfant terrible of British cinema. His legacy as a film-maker consists of a large number of films on the lives of artists, mainly composers. But Russell’s approach to artist biography was highly unorthodox: rather than reconstruct a factual account he offered a deeply personal interpretation of artists’ lives based on his own understanding of their work. In a programmatic text for his film on Mahler (1974), Russell explained that his films ‘evolve through a stream of consciousness in which the man and the myth, the music and its meaning, time, place, dream and fact all flow and blend into the mainstream of the film itself’ and that ‘my film is simply about some of the things I feel when I think of Mahler’s life and listen to his music’.This book is an attempt to explain what that statement means and to unpack its implications for the practice of life writing. It takes a baroque approach to performance and performativity to show how Russell not simply made highly inventive films on other artists, but also constructed those films as a kind of self-portrait. Russell’s work then becomes a performance of self through art. In four chapters of detailed analysis this book reconstructs Russell’s method, from the very first films he made for the BBC in the early 1960s through his major feature films of the 1970s and 1980s.

Abstract:
ix, 100 p. : ill. (some col.)
In 1972 ceramist Ken Price (b. 1935) embarked on Happy's Curios , a six-year long project that he described as an homage to Mexican folk pottery. It ended with a 1978 exhibition of the same name held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The project and the related exhibition integrated and critically investigated three common classifications of cultural objects: fine art, folk art, and craft. This thesis argues that the Happy's Curios project deploys these categories in a manner that challenges and deconstructs how they are used. The thesis offers a critical history of the Happy's Curios project and its reception in order to interrogate how the project engages the taxonomy of fine art, folk art, and craft, as well as its relevance to a broader art historical context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze Ken Loachs movie Looking for Eric (2009). The analysis seeks to establish how the movie narrative presents formal and conceptual aspects that enable us to compare the constitutive elements of a football match with possibilities of explanations for Postmodernity oriented by the framework of Historical Materialism. In order to do so, it will be necessary to understand Fredric Jamesons notion of Cognitive Mapping, to depict how it is possible to situate a subjects historical connections in the context of Postmodernity. Nonetheless, it will be necessary to comprehend how the working class cultural practices can be an interesting sign for the application of that same concept, doing so by the assessment of important notions such as the existence of Dominant, Residual and Emergent cultural practices, as established by Raymond Williams, as well as the possibility of social change through Ernst Blochs idea of Utopia. These ideas are depicted in the work being analyzed through the manifestation of historic value in cultural objects that come from the Cultural Industry. The narrative seeks to establish how these elements can constitute what Pierrre Nora repute as Places of Memory and, if signified through a diferent perspective, could be a bridge for the establishment of historical connections between the individual and society.

Abstract:
Demand for equal rights tends to be accompanied by assimilation of ethnic subordinates while the recognition of their separate identity is liable to justify unfair segregation. When an ethnic minority is aware of this dilemma, what identity are they to claim and what ideology do they present? By looking at contemporary local activism in Okinawa, Japan, this dissertation tries to give an empirical answer to this question. In Okinawans' historical experience, both their sameness as and difference from the Japanese turned out to be disadvantageous for the people. Local activists can support neither their Japanese identity nor Okinawan identity. As a result, although they struggled against the central power of the state, their activism can not be fully embraced within the category of multiculturalist movements. The body of this dissertation consists of a historical reconstruction of citizens' movements and a sociological analysis of activists' discourse on Okinawa-Japan relations. The ethnography focuses on a particular generation of educated local people, who form the mainstream of local activists in post-reversion Okinawa, and tries to illuminate what impact the reversion movement had on them and how it shaped their thought and actions thereafter. Chapter 1 describes the way in which Okinawan intellectuals re-contextualise obsolete religious tradition into their environmentalist or pacifist movements. Chapter 2 addresses the moral ambiguity of modern collective identities and demonstrates, with the Japanese as an example, that moral values change depending on transient international power relations. Chapter 3 focuses on the empirical historical context, the reversion movement, in which a category of Okinawan intellectuals realised this moral ambiguity. Chapter 4 examines an expression of regional identity, the Ryukyuan Arc, by which Okinawan activists tried to overcome the principle of modern social collectivity. Chapter 5 discusses how Okinawans' perception has historically changed in regard to their position in Japanese society.

Abstract:
American society possesses strong, if not basic, stereotypes for each hair color: the "dumb" blonde, the "intelligent" or "serious" brunette, and the "spitfire" redhead. In contemporary entertainment culture, blonde women have achieved unique status beyond the stereotypes accorded to their brunette and redheaded counterparts. Revered and reviled simultaneously, these women cannot be ignored or dismissed. The convention of the "dumb blonde" is at the heart of this issue. When scrutinized, it is possible to discern at least four distinctions of this stereotype: the perceived as truly dumb, or innocent, blonde (Johanna in Sweeney Todd); the bombshell blonde (Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Mae West in Dumb Blonde); the dumb-but-actually-intelligent blonde (Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Galinda in Wicked); and the comedic blonde (Adelaide in Guys and Dolls). These characters presumably share more than their hair color and sex. By researching these blonde stereotypes, commonalities will be discovered and assessed for their applicability in character research. As this thesis explores the creation of Audrey in Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies, a methodology for creating this type of character will be created. Through research and analysis of the various blonde stereotypes, an in-depth character and script analysis, and a journal of the creation process, it is my intention to reveal how a non-superficial portrayal of this character is possible and can be duplicated. Audrey's "blonde" traits will also be explored as they relate to the character's function within the play, emphasizing the ways her specified blondeness serves the play's needs. Analysis of the blonde stereotypes, script and character analyses, and the rehearsal journal will not only create a system for creating this type of character, but also will illuminate why this character type is important to comedic theatrical literature.

Abstract:
This research aims at understanding the aesthetical-political project of the English filmmaker Ken Loach in the course of the history of political art, and as a result of the historical process of crisis of the Left and fragmentation of the working class, intensified throughout the second half of the 20th century. We observe the ways in which the work of Ken Loach establishes relations between the making of a form which possesses a rescue of formal elements (such as melodrama, naturalism, Italian neorealism and Czech New Wave) that have a utopian potential in their origin, and the search for themes that make the class struggle explicit. The refunctionalization of those aesthetical materials brings him closer to the Benjaminian conception of History and the political assumptions of the epic theater of Bertolt Brecht. The movies used as basis for the analysis are Land and Freedom (1995) and Carlas Song (1996), movies whose themes emphasize moments of real states of exception, such as the Spanish civil war and the Nicaraguan revolution. Besides, both films bring about the discussion over the role of political cinema, its possibilities and limitations inside the cultural industry and the socio-historical conjuncture of the end of the 20th century

Abstract:
After being for a long time in the shadow of its Tanzanian counterpart, Kenyan fiction has recently come into the foreground with writers such as Kyallo Wadi Wamitila, Rocha Chi-merah, Mwenda Mbatiah and Ken Walibora. The paper deals with his second novel Kufa kuzikana. Although Kufa Kuzikana is a powerful accusation of how ruthless ethnic feelings still inform many people from the intellectuals and top politicians to the uneducated villagers, the novel does contain a positive message as well in that it shows how true friendship can overcome ethnic and other differences and survive even in the most adverse circumstances.

Abstract:
African contemporary situation is sensibly marked by troubles, that determine its World level : political, social, economical and human realities. Before this general and increasing degradation, Ken Bugul and Calixthe Beyala wonder about writing evolution and adaptation, about African writers mission in current period. These preoccupations define two interests : The « women » subject (through the feminine sexuality and emancipation) and African Policy (through updating postcolonial literature). This work consist in analysing the scriptural treatments of these main themes in the works of Ken Bugul and Calixthe Beyala between 1983 (The crazy baobab of Ken Bugul) and 2006 (The golden piece, of the same author)

Abstract:
The thesis proposes a comparative analysis, both in thematic and formal terms, regarding the representation of women’s corporeality in a selection of texts by two authors belonging to the contemporary French-language literary universe: Louise Dupré (Sherbrooke, Canada, 1949) and Ken Bugul (Malem-Hodar, Senegal, 1947). After a first introductory part, focused on a contextualization and diachronic presentation of the evolution of Quebec and Senegalese literature and on the importance, in both territories, of female and feminist intervention, the second and third sections will focus respectively on the work of the two writers, of whom, after outlining their individual biographical and authorial paths, a selection of six works will be analysed: the poetic collection "La peau familière" (1983), the play "Tout comme elle" (2006) and the novel "L'album multicolore" (2014) for the first one, and the autobiographical triptych composed of "Le baobab fou" (1982), "Cendres et braises" (1994) and "Riwan ou le chemin de sable" (1999) for the second one. The fourth part will therefore present a final comparison between Dupré's and Bugul's broken body representation, showing how, perhaps unexpectedly, the works of two authors who at first sight seem distant and different converge, as will also be confirmed by the interview with Dupré and Bugul included in the appendix, towards a rich dialogue of content and aesthetic analogies, among which stand out the recurrence of the autobiographical gesture, a style marked by a fragmentary word, the visceral importance of the maternal connection and the recognition of love as the unique and salvific message of universal hope.

Abstract:
This thesis is intitled«The identity crisis in some novels of Ken Bugul, Leonora Miano and Abla Farhoud» is an analysis of some novels of three French female writers. It is based on the general assumption of the existence of minority group in French literature including that of women writers whose texts have shy echo in the literary field and the novel expresses more opacities of identity crisis. It grabbed the texts of these writers on their context of emergence and how their provisions, their positions and stances draw and identity crisis rooted in the trajectory.Their writing shows an interactive brands binomial text/context. Thus, the study shows that writing deconstructed and installs the identity crisis which is sexual, religious and cultural. It upsets the ticket aesthetics and fragmentations values and social codes, like motherhood and fatherhood. Social play on the definition of identities and fragmentation reaches the relationship between self and other. The identity problem which states especially the connoted language and riting the transgression of gender and language codes cover important issues that are social, literary and institutionnel. This thesis load to positive results. In particular, it establishes the flow of certain identities, even those that appear at first glance as immutable in power of social. In contemporary times the experiences are increasingly rare. From this context, this study aims to understand what are the potentiating life experiences. To achieve these objective we choose the qualitative method with a focus on literature review. A Systematic Review of Literature in data bases SciELO and Lilacs, 17 articles were selected were selected. From that we identified nine major thematic areas of concentration where the potentiating life experiences could be observed: arts; education; personal experiences; psychology; religion and spirituality; community; healthy; family; job. After the methodological approach and data analysis, we noticed that the potentiating Life experiences are beyond a closed concept. Understanding these experiences are moving toward various possibilities, like it could be found in different areas of life; they appear as significant moments of personal history of the people and also seem to act as an important factor for the development of consciousness. . Abstract:
The intellectual world of the late Ming literati was without question one of great richness and complexity. The focus of the present study, however, is limited to an examination of Wang Ken, the man, his key philosophical beliefs, and his role in the founding of the T'ai-chou School of thought. In exploring the genesis of Wang Ken and his school of thought, certain aspects of the social milieu are examined in order to reach a better understanding of how the larger environment and this radical intellectual movement became intertwined. In other words, I have attempted to discern and define the interplay of the most important creative minds of the time, and particularly those of the elite class with this group. As a teacher and thinker Wang Ken exercised a considerable influence on his times, contributing in the process to the new permissiveness so characteristic of the latter half of the Ming dynasty. In this regard, the present study also represents an attempt to discover the basic patterns underlying Wang Ken's thought, as well as the T'ai-chou School's responsiveness to dramatic changes in society. In doing so, we perceive an implication of intellectual autonomy in the form of social and political protest against imperial autocracy. Also, the spread of his faith in an attainable and intelligible sagehood among the lower classes, gradually blurred the dividing line between elite and commoner. Finally, the assertions of Wang Ken and the T'ai-chou School indeed stimulated a new sense of self-awareness and self-worth. Nevertheless, it is because of its radical rejection of the established social, political, and intellectual order that the T'ai-chou School has been branded as heterodox. As a result, the frustration of its aspiration for a more genuine humanity was inevitable, as this intellectual movement fell victim to the forces of orthodoxy and conformity.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The writing of intimacy in Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan is an expression of pain related to childhood and particularly to the relationship with the mother. This study aims to analyse the fictionalisation of the writers' experiences in the corpus and to identify the symbolism at the poetic and thematic level. It appears that the two authors, although belonging to two cultural and geographical areas, write their intimacy to repair the suffering they have undergone since childhood on the one hand, and that through their discourses they manage to heal the world in a form of empathy with the reader on the other hand. This work is based on sociology and theories of autobiography which allow us to grasp the imaginary of the authors from their original environment that is the family, by tracing their biographical, social, and literary trajectory. This itinerary shows that the uneasiness of the authors can be read in their writings through a series of disruptions of social and aesthetic codes at the sexual, linguistic, and generic levels. Any form of strict classification is rejected. From the biographical elements present and reinvested from one text to another, this work attempts to propose intimacy to redefine a certain register of the contemporary extreme genre so called "biofictional". This work is divided into three parts of two chapters each. The first part entitled “Scenography of intimacy: chronotope and characters” consists in examining the spatio-temporal considerations and the conscious or unconscious embedding elements which legitimize the literary cartography of the poetics of intimacy and allow us to read the postures of Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan in the corpus. Subsequently, the second part “Poetics of intimacy” proposes to see how, through the writing of intimacy, the authors manage to decompartmentalize the codes within the novel itself, on the one hand, and to show that a dynamic of aesthetic recognition runs through t he texts of Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan. In the end, the third part entitled "The themes and symbolism of intimacy in Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan" brings out the figurations and postulates of the writing of intimacy at the personal, socio-cultural and political level of on the one hand, and the new aesthetics that emerge on the other hand. Keywords: Intimacy, writing, family, autobiography, poetics, sociology
