Abstract:
The 4-color theorem was proved by showing that a minimum counterexample cannot exist. Birkhoff demonstrated that a minimum counterexample must be internally 6-connected. We show that a minimum counterexample must also satisfy a coloring property that we call Kempe-locking. The novel idea explored in this article is that the connectivity and coloring properties are incompatible. We describe a methodology for analyzing whether an arbitrary planar triangulation is Kempe-locked. We provide a heuristic argument that a fundamental Kempe-locking configuration must be of low order and then perform a systematic search through isomorphism classes for such configurations. All Kempe-locked triangulations that we discovered have two features in common: (1) they are Kempe-locked with respect to only a single edge, say x y , and (2) they have a Birkhoff diamond with endpoints x and y as a subgraph. On the strength of our investigations, we formulate a plausible conjecture that the Birkhoff diamond is the only fundamental Kempe-locking configuration. If true, this would establish that the connectivity and coloring properties of a minimum counterexample are indeed incompatible. It would also imply the appealing conclusion that the Birkhoff diamond configuration alone is responsible for the 4-colorability of planar triangulations.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough Margery Kempe (1373-1440) probably never had regular contact with a Jewish person, she depicts the Jews as symbols of evil in her autobiographical Book. Despite the rebellious nature Kempe displays to patriarchal authorities in the church by refusing to behave as a nun, to wear black, or to remain in a cloister, she is entirely orthodox in portraying the Jews as Christkillers in her vision of the Crucifixion. This anti-Judaic ideology appears in the Gospels and in official doctrine, beginning with Augustine, continuing with Pope Gregory I the Great, and worsening with Aquinas and the Franciscan and Dominican friars in the lourteenth century. Medieval drama, especially the N-Town Passion Play (which Kempe may have seen) provides a striking analogue tor Kempe's vision at Calvary. Kempe, extraordinary in some ways, is entirely conventional in her dratnatiration of the Jewish soldiers as dcicides.

Abstract:
On March 30, 1984, I was given the privilege of delivering the introductory speech at the first American Medical Association (AMA) meeting exclusively for child abuse and neglect. Although one might wonder why 22 years lapsed between the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) publication of the milestone article by Henry Kempe1 and the first meeting, the fact remains that the AMA is now paying attention to the needs of abused children and their families. My talk at this conference came just 3 weeks after the death of Henry Kempe, some 20 years almost to the date when he asked if I would like to be involved with his study of the battered child syndrome.

Abstract:
My thesis project is an adaptation of The Book of Margery Kempe into the form of a play. Considered to be the first autobiography in English, The Book of Margery Kempe tells the story of Margery Kempe, a fourteenth century woman who experienced visions of God, Jesus and the Devil and who became famous in England as a religious mystic. Her visions inspired her to travel alone throughout England, Europe and the Middle East and meet with some of the most powerful religious figures of her time. She inspired controversy through weeping copiously during religious ceremonies and speaking publicly of her visions and was put on trial at York, Cawood and Leicester for heresy. Margery Kempe recorded her experiences in the form of a book with the aid of a priest, as she was illiterate. Her book is one of the few existing examples of medieval women’s writing, and provides a unique insight into the treatment of individuals who experienced visions during the medieval era. My play examines how the tradition of female mystical piety influenced Margery Kempe’s interpretation of her visions, and how her experience relates to that of individuals today who are diagnosed with conditions such as schizophrenia, temporal lobe epilepsy, postnatal psychosis and postnatal depression. In considering the latter, through the support of my supervisory committee member Dr. Todd Handy, I have read scholarly work from the fields of neuroscience and psychology. My play does not seek to diagnose Margery Kempe from the perspective of neuroscience and psychology, but rather to imagine how her experience of having visions might relate to that of individuals who are diagnosed with psychiatric and neurological conditions that are associated with hallucinations today. My play juxtaposes modern psychological perspectives on the phenomenon of hallucinations with medieval Christian beliefs regarding visions to demonstrate how cultural attitudes affect the treatment and perception of symptoms associated with madness, and how Margery Kempe coped with experiencing visions that set her apart from the rest of her community.

Abstract:
In fourteenth-century England, a form of lay spirituality emerged, influenced by the writings and example of the famous mystics, both English and continental, of that period, but much affected by other developments as well. Against the background of socio-economic and political change, the emergence of lay spirituality is examined, with particular emphasis upon continuity and change within the church, the religious instruction of the age, and the spirituality of the English mystics. Finally, the sole surviving written record of lay spirituality of the period, The Book of Margery Kempe, is investigated, along with its author, Margery Kempe - pilgrim, visionary, and aspiring mystic.

Abstract:
This paper describes a mechanism design methodology that assembles standard components to trace plane curves that have a Fourier series parameterization. This approach can be used to approximate complex plane curves to interpolate image boundaries constructed from points. We describe three ways to construct a mechanism that generates a curve from a Fourier series parameterization. One uses Scotch yoke linkages for each term of Fourier series which are added using a belt drive. The second approach uses a coupled serial chain for each coordinate Fourier parameterization. The third method uses one constrained coupled serial chain to trace a specified plane curve. This work can be viewed as a version of the Kempe Universality Theorem that states that a linkage exists that can trace any plane algebraic curve. In our case, we include belts and pulleys, and obtain linkages that trace curves that have Fourier parameterizations.

Abstract:
Baranov truss is a structural framework composed of revolute jointed bars. It is also regarded as an Assur kinematic chain (briefly termed AKC) in viewpoint of kinematics. Based on Grübler mobility criterion, these AKCs with zero DoF should be generally unmovable. However, under some specified dimensional constraints, they have the constrained motion. In the paper, we focus on identifying mobility constraints of the simplified planar 7-bar Type-I Baranov-truss (AKC-I) linkage and on synthesizing one novel family of movable focal-type 7-bar linkages. In the beginning, applying the vector-loop approach produces the algebraic relations between structural parameters and angular variables of the simplified 7-bar such linkages. Next, by Sylvester elimination method, we attain one algebraic polynomial, which is function of an input variable only, and propose the mobility dimensional constraints of such truss architecture. Moreover, following the graphical technique for generating Kempe focal linkages, we systematically synthesize eight kinds of new movable focal-type 7-bar Baranov-truss linkages by removing one specified redundant link. These synthesized linkages further confirm the accuracy and availability of the derived mobility dimensional constraints.

Abstract:
The Kemper County Project has demonstrated Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG™) at a 2-on-1 Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle (IGCC) facility located in Kemper County, Mississippi. Kemper is the largest IGCC project in the world, the first to use lignite as fuel, the first to capture and sell CO2, and the first to produce multiple byproducts from initial startup. The facility features two Siemens SGT6-5000F gas turbines, each capable of operating on a high-hydrogen syngas produced in the Transport Gasifiers from locally mined lignite. Using high-hydrogen syngas requires unique modifications to the combustion turbine design. Flame-diffusion combustors, rather than dry low-NOX designs, prevent flashback caused by the high hydrogen content of the syngas. Also, ports added to the turbine compressor casing allow air to be extracted from the compressor and used elsewhere in the plant, supplying up to one half of the air required by the gasifier. The Kemper facility has achieved the integrated operation of both gasifiers, including the production of electricity from syngas by both combustion turbines. Turbine operation on the high hydrogen syngas was smooth both during normal operations and during transitions, with efficiencies meeting or exceeding expectations. This paper describes the Kemper plant design, focusing on the combustion turbine design unique to Kemper. The paper also discusses turbine design challenges specific to Kemper, provides an overview of the robust control scheme used on both syngas and natural gas co-firing operations, and provides preliminary operational and performance results, including inspection findings.

Abstract:
The wicked sustainability challenges of current socio-technical systems, crossing the planetary boundaries vital for human life, call for fundamental and radical change in the form of transitions. These sustainability transitions require a knowledge basis of relevant actors in the system, which intermediary structures organizing knowledge transfer can support. Over the last decades, sustainability researchers have not only increasingly studied the dynamics of transitions (Rip and Kemp 1998; Geels 2002; Papachristos et al. 2013), but have also gained insights on activities contributing to the acceleration of transitions and the sup-portive role of intermediaries in that regard (Wieczorek and Hekkert 2012; Kanda et al. 2018; Kivimaa et al. 2019). This paper revisits the literature on the dynamics of transitions, the activities of intermediaries in contributing in order to formulate implications of the characteristics of sustainable development and sustainability transitions and the related knowledge types for the organization of knowledge transfer by regional intermediaries.
