In order to help physics teachers who face the new curricular proposal introduced by the National Curricular Parameters for high schools, this work has the objective to evaluate whether the texts “Leituras de Física”, produced by the Physics Teaching Reelaboration Group, from the Physics Institute of São Paulo University, allow the development of some competences related to the concept of heat. In this study, we also research the application of kellyan experience cycle (anticipation, investment, encounter, confirmation/disconfirmation, constructive revision), using this material, to high school students, during thirty classes of fifty minutes each, in which the two first involved the anticipation phase. After the interventions, we applied the post-test, with two intentions: to allow the student to make a great constructive revision and to diagnose if the student had developed the expected competences. The comparison of results obtained in pre-test, in interventions and post-test showed that this didactic resource, used in a experience cycle, contributed not only to the development of specific competences related to the concept of heat, as well permitted that the students could progress in their capacity to read and write texts. Therefore, the methodology applied in this research, besides familiarizing the participants with the specific language of physics, allowed them to develop the necessary competences to analyze scientific news.
A fim de colaborar com o professor de física, que se vê diante dessa nova proposta curricular trazida pelos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do ensino médio, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar se os textos de “Leituras de Física”, produzido pelo Grupo de Reelaboração do Ensino de Física, do Instituto de Física da Universidade de São Paulo, possibilitam o desenvolvimento de algumas competências relacionadas ao conceito de calor. Neste estudo, pesquisamos, também, a aplicação do ciclo da experiência kellyana (antecipação, investimento, encontro, confirmação/desconfirmação e revisão construtiva), utilizando esse material, a alunos do segundo ano do ensino médio, em trinta aulas de cinqüenta minutos cada, das quais as duas primeiras contemplaram a fase de antecipação. Após as intervenções aplicamos o pós-teste com duas intenções: permitir que o aluno ao respondê-lo fizesse uma grande revisão construtiva e diagnosticar se o aluno tinha desenvolvido as competências esperadas. A comparação dos resultados obtidos no pré-teste, nas intervenções e no pós-teste mostrou que esse recurso didático, utilizado num ciclo da experiência, contribuiu não só para desenvolvimento de determinadas competências relacionadas ao conceito de calor, como também permitiu que os alunos avançassem na sua capacidade de leitura e interpretação de textos. Assim, a metodologia empregada nesta pesquisa, além de familiarizar os aprendizes com a linguagem particular da Física, possibilitou o desenvolvimento de competências necessárias para analisar e interpretar notícias científicas.

Abstract:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative pathological condition of the appendicular joints which affects the cartilage and underlying bone. OA is relatively common in both the archaeological and clinical context, and a significant amount of research has been conducted on this osteological condition. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the incidence, demographic prevalence, and general severity of hip and knee OA in a Roman-Christian period (50 A.D-450 A.D) population sample from the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. The bioarchaeological sample originates from the Kellis 2 cemetery which is associated with the ancient town of Kellis. The town of Kellis is believed to have been a prosperous economic hub in Egypt, located in the Western Sahara Desert approximately 250 kilometers west of the Nile. The skeletal samples (n=135, 83 females and 51 males) was visually assessed for the osteological characteristics of OA in the hips and the knees. Joint surfaces of the hip include the acetabulum and femoral head. Joint surfaces of the knee include lateral/medial tibio-femoral compartments and the patellofemoral compartment. The ages of the individuals assessed in this study range from 19-72 years, and have been divided into five age categories which were then cross-tabulated with sex and OA incidence in order to determine demographic prevalence of OA. Findings indicate that age is a significant etiological factor of OA prevalence for both males and females. Males are afflicted by the disease significantly more than females in the hips (F: (L) 3.6%, (R) 5.9% and M: (L) 13.7%, (R) 13.7%) and also slightly more affected in the knees(F: (L) 17.5%, (R) 18.3% and M: (L) 22.9%, (R)21.3%). The acetabulum tends to be more arthritic than the femoral head for both males and females. Femoral condyles tend to be more arthritic than tibial condyles for both males and females.; The patello-femoral compartment tends to be the most arthritic part of the knee while the medial condyles of both tibiae exhibit virtually no OA (with the exception of one individual). The joint surface observed with the highest OA prevalence is the femoral surface of the patella (F: (L) 17.5%, (R) 15.9% and M: (L) 21.3%, (R) 21.3%). The highest prevalence of OA by joint complex is observed on the left knee in males (22.9%), and the lowest prevalence of OA is observed on the left hip of females (3.6%). Both hip and knee joints have higher prevalence of unilateral OA manifestation than bilateral. Isotopic and archaeological evidence indicates that the individuals at Kellis maintained an agricultural subsistence regime, and that the males within the population may have been highly mobile migrating to and from the Dakhleh Oasis. Subsistence agriculture has its necessary physical demands which may have been a contributory factor to OA rates. Males show higher OA rates than females throughout the joints of the legs. Sexual dimorphism of OA for the hips is suggestive of sexual divisions of labor. OA of the knees lacks sexual dimorphism therefore the knee joint complex of males and females were likely subjected to similar levels of mechanical loading. It can be concluded based on the OA data that males and females exhibit similar activity, or biomechanical stress levels in the knee joint complexes. Males exhibit significantly higher pathological manifestation of OA in the hip joint complexes, indicative of higher levels of mechanical loading in the hip joint complex which can theoretically be attributed to sexual divisions of labor or perhaps terrestrial mobility.

Abstract:
The Kellis 2 cemetery site within the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt provides a unique study opportunity due to the large number of infant, perinatal, and fetal individuals that have been recovered. Several of the infant and fetal remains have undiagnosed circular defects on the temporal bone, and others have undiagnosed lesions on the zygomatic bone. Of the 268 individuals under one year of age that have been analyzed from the Kellis 2 cemetery, twenty-six individuals have the temporal bone defect and six have the zygomatic bone lesions. A survey of clinical and paleopathological research provided possible pathological conditions that could cause abnormalities such as defects or lesions on the temporal bones or zygomatic bones in the fetal and infant population. For this study, the temporal bone defects and zygomatic bone lesions were macroscopically observed and a descriptive analysis was created. The information garnered from the literature survey was then compared to the individuals from the Kellis 2 cemetery that had the temporal bone defects and zygomatic bone lesions to create a differential diagnosis. A differential diagnosis of the temporal bone defects includes mastoid emissary vein defects and petrosquamous sinus anomalies. A differential diagnosis of the zygomatic bone lesions includes scurvy. Contributing factors may also have been present in order for these defects and lesions to occur. Creating a differential diagnosis of the defects and lesions can provide information on the health, growth, and morbidity of the youngest members of the society related to the Kellis 2 cemetery.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to examine mortuary practices in the Romano-Byzantine period Kellis 2 cemetery located in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. The first research objective examines the relationship between age, sex and grave substructures of 701 burials in Kellis 2 cemetery. The aim of this research objective was to determine if the presence and style of grave substructures were influenced by sex or age. Although not statistically significant, GIS analysis revealed that most of the graves in the Kellis 2 cemetery have no associated substructures, but of those that did have associated substructures,adult male burials were more likely to have a substructure than adult females or juveniles. Moreover, males and females aged from 22 to 50 years were more likely to have an associated substructure than younger and older individuals. In the juvenile age categories, newborns and children aged 1 to 5 years were more likely to have an associated substructure than the other juvenile age categories. This may be related to the second research objective which focused on the spatial relationship between infant and adult burials in the Kellis 2 cemetery. The second objective was to determine if infants were more likely to be buried between two adults, perhaps representing family units. GIS and statistical analysis revealed that the infants in the Kellis 2 cemetery were more likely to be buried closer to each other or to adult females than to adult males. Of those 25 infants buried between two adults most of them were either buried between two adult females, or between an adult male and female. Only three infants were found buried between two males. Interestingly, many of the adult females buried in close proximity with an infant were of child-bearing age. GIS was a very useful tool for examining questions of mortuary practices, particularly in examining spatial relationships between variables recorded for the Kellis 2 cemetery.

The objective of this study was to investigate, in a class of future teachers of UFRPE, studying the discipline: "Fundamentos e Vivências em Práticas Interdisciplinares", which the conditions, obstacles and possibilities, so that the contemporary science contributes by through the training of teachers for the necessary renewal of science education. For that, we turn to the case of fractals, taking as a basis the Theory of Personal Constructs of George Kelly (1963), more specifically, the Cycle of Experience. The interlocution was structured in five stages through which students had the opportunity to anticipate and invest in building an interdisciplinary and complex thinking and later confront the new information gained from their preconceptions about the relationship between concept of fractals, the emerging paradigm and the traditional paradigm, with the possibility to modify the preconceptions. Data analysis allowed the following conclusion: the traditional and modern approach, the mathematical rigor of students and predominantly classic relations between the concept and adaptation to the current world have been enriched by a posture in which the dialogue with the uncertainty favors the development of knowledge and thinking. And besides, that is from more complex relationships that stands the perception of interdependence as well as the ideas of contemporary science.
O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar, numa turma de licenciandos da UFRPE cursando a disciplina: Fundamentos e Vivências em Práticas Interdisciplinares, quais as condições, obstáculos e possibilidades, para que a ciência contemporânea contribua, através da formação de professores, para a necessária renovação do ensino de ciências. Para tanto se recorreu ao caso dos Fractais tendo como base a Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais de George Kelly (1963), mais especificamente o Ciclo da Experiência. A intervenção foi estruturada em cinco etapas, através das quais os alunos tiveram oportunidade de antecipar e investir na construção do pensamento interdisciplinar e complexo e, posteriormente, confrontar as novas informações adquiridas com suas concepções prévias sobre as relações entre o conceito de fractais, o paradigma tradicional e o paradigma emergente vindo a modificá-las. A análise dos dados permitiu a seguinte conclusão: a postura moderna tradicional, o rigor matemático dos alunos e as relações predominantemente clássicas estabelecidas entre o conceito e adequação ao mundo atual foram enriquecidas por uma postura onde o diálogo com a incerteza favorece o conhecer e o pensar e que é a partir das relações mais complexas que a percepção de interdependência se sobressai, bem como as ideias da ciência contemporânea.

Abstract:
The inclusion of human fetal skeletons in the archaeological record can reveal much about past cultures' perception of life and death. The preservation of fetal remains in the archaeological record is a rarity, and the discovery of pathological skeletons is even rarer. A fetal skeleton from a Roman period cemetery (c. 31BC - 303AD) in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, displays what are thought to be classic skeletal indicators of the neural tube defect, anencephaly. The published literature concerning the skeletal diagnosis of anencephaly is scant so in order to diagnose this individual it is pertinent to create a diagnostic standard. The purpose of this thesis is twofold – first to create a quantitative standard from which researchers can determine the presence of anencephaly in the archaeological record, thus ruling out trauma or taphonomic processes as reasons for missing cranial elements. The second objective of this research is to conduct a qualitative comparison in order to diagnose the individual from the Dakhleh Oasis. A comparative analysis of nine documented anencephalic skeletal remains housed at the Smithsonian Institute was conducted to create a diagnostic standard for the skeletal characteristics of anencephaly. The comparative analysis of the Dakhleh specimen supports the diagnosis of anencephaly.

Este trabalho se propõe a analisar as contribuições dos recursos digitais aos analógicos no favorecimento da aprendizagem da Geometria, mediada pela Libras para alunos surdos. Nossa investigação está apoiada nos pressupostos teóricos da Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais de George Kelly (1963) e foi desenvolvida por meio da seguinte condução: um recorte sobre a história da educação do surdo e sua construção identitária. No segundo momento, o ensino de matemática para alunos surdos, em que apresentamos algumas pesquisas. Seguimos discorrendo concisamente sobre os recursos analógicos e os recursos digitais, avançamos com uma sucinta abordagem sobre a Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais de George Kelly e finalizamos com a análise da intervenção, cujo tema é o ensino de polígono convexo regular, que se encontra subsidiado no Corolário da Experiência conduzida pelo Ciclo da Experiência Kellyana. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são alunos do 8º ano do Ensino Fundamental da EDAC. Os registros foram feitos por meio de fotos, filmagens e notas de campo. A observação participante deste estudo de caso nos revelou que a aprendizagem do aluno surdo está intimamente relacionada à proficiência em Libras, ao conhecimento da história da educação do surdo e o pertencimento à comunidade surda por parte do professor regente da disciplina. Finalizamos, destacando a importância do uso de metodologias específicas e de recursos digitais e analógicos que possibilitem associar a imagem à Libras para favorecer a compreensão de conceitos geométricos muitas vezes abstratos pela exploração do visual.

This paper aims to analyze the contributions of the digital to analog resources in fostering learning of geometry, mediated pounds for deaf students. Our research is supported by the theoretical principles of Personal Construct Theory of George Kelly (1963) and was developed through the following conduct: an outline of the history of education of the deaf and their identity construction. In the second phase, the teaching of mathematics to deaf students, in which we present some research. Followed by talking briefly about the features analog and digital resources, move forward with a succinct approach to Personal Construct Theory of George Kelly and finalized with the analysis of the intervention, whose theme is the teaching regular convex polygons, which is subsidized in Corollary Experiment conducted by Cycle Experience Kellyana. The research subjects are 8th graders of elementary school of EDAC. The records were made using photos, video footage and field notes. Participant observation of this case study has revealed that learning of deaf students is closely related to proficiency in Pounds, knowledge of the history of education of the deaf and the deaf community belonging to the ruling by the subject teacher. As considerations emphasize the importance of the use of specific methods, as in this case with the use of digital and analog features which favor the realization of geometrical abstract concepts often the possibility of visual exploration.

Distance Education is a mode of delivering education that allows new opportunities of access to higher and continuing education. In this context, the supervised curricular stage requires the compulsory presence, according to the legislation. This research presents a methodological proposal based on George Kelly's Theory of Personal Constructs, whose objective is to analyse the contributions of the experience of the Supervised Curricular Stage V, organised and based on Kelly's Experience Cycle (KEC), towards the construction of a reflexive teacher's practice, as well as to relate the conceptions of managers and classroom teachers of stage field schools, about aspects that favor and/or difficult the performance of the graduate students in the school. Participated in the study a representative of the Executive Secretary of Education, six school principals and six classroom teachers from stage field schools, who took part in the first phase. Besides these, nineteen licentiate students from the course of Licentiate in Physics from UFRPE/UAB also participated in the second phase. The methodology used was organised as a KEC, which has five phases, allied to the work of Cooperative Group. The analysis of the results showed the need for integration between the institutions involved in the formation process of the future teacher. The reflective process started by the KEC enabled the evolution of conceptions of licentiate students/trainees, contributing to their learning.
A Educação a Distância (EAD) apresenta-se como uma modalidade de educação que proporciona novas oportunidades de acesso a cursos superiores e formação continuada. Nesse contexto, o Estágio Curricular Supervisionado precisa da obrigatoriedade de momentos presenciais, de acordo com a legislação. Esta pesquisa apresenta uma proposta metodológica, baseada na Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais de George Kelly, que tem como objetivo analisar as contribuições da vivência do Estágio Curricular Supervisionado V, organizado com base no Ciclo da Experiência Kellyana (CEK), para a construção de uma prática docente reflexiva, assim como relacionar as concepções de gestores e professores regentes de escolas campo de estágio, acerca de aspectos que favorecem e/ou dificultam a atuação do licenciando/estagiário na escola. Participaram do estudo um representante da Secretaria Executiva de Educação, seis diretores de escolas e seis professores regentes de escolas campo de estágio, que fizeram parte da primeira etapa. Além desses, dezenove licenciandos do curso de Licenciatura em Física da UFRPE/UAB também participaram na segunda etapa. A metodologia utilizada foi organizada como um CEK, que possui cinco fases, aliado ao trabalho de Grupo Cooperativo. A análise dos resultados revelou a necessidade da integração entre as instituições envolvidas no processo de formação do futuro professor. O processo reflexivo desencadeado pelo CEK possibilitou a evolução das concepções dos licenciandos/estagiários, contribuindo para sua aprendizagem.

The Modern Physics insertion in High School, along with its postulates and theoretical patterns that can’t be practiced or demonstrated, brings additional difficulties to the Physics teaching-learning process. A feasible alternative to minimize the problems consists in carrying out experiments analogue to certain events of the Modern Physics. Another problem consists in the lack of skilled high-school graduated teachers in order to work with the new context. Therefore, the objective of this work was to investigate the construction process of the Relativity of Simultaneity, concept through the use of an experimental apparatus, with students of Physics of Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). Thus, it was chosen the Personal Construct Theory as a methodological-theoretical purpose, and it was developed an experimental appararatus, involving an electronic circuit to control a LED (light-emitting diode), matrix that permits analogies with a light beam behavior interacting with different obstacles. The results showed that the developed experimental pattern was decisive concerning the promotion of cognitive conflicts, making students review their initial concepts and consequently, reorganize them, considering some aspects as: time, distance, constancy of the light speed and events that happen at the same time, which are essential to the purpose concept comprehension; The Relativity of Simultaneity.
A inserção da Física Moderna no Ensino Médio, com seus postulados e modelos teóricos que não podem ser diretamente vivenciados ou demonstrados, trazem dificuldades adicionais para o ensino-aprendizagem de Física. Uma alternativa viável para minimizar os problemas que daí advêm consiste na utilização de experimentos análogos à certos acontecimentos da Física Moderna. Outro problema consiste na falta de preparação dos professores formados para o Ensino Médio para atuarem no novo contexto. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o processo de construção do conceito de Relatividade da Simultaneidade, através do uso de um aparato experimental, com alunos do Curso de Licenciatura em Física da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco – UFRPE. Para tanto, foi escolhida a Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais como pressuposto teórico metodológico, e foi desenvolvido um aparato experimental, envolvendo um circuito eletrônico para controlar uma matriz de LED (Diodo Emissor de Luz), que permitisse analogias com o comportamento de um feixe de luz ao interagir com distintos obstáculos. Os resultados indicaram que o modelo experimental desenvolvido foi determinante no sentido de promover conflitos cognitivos, que levaram os alunos a reverem suas concepções iniciais e, conseqüentemente, reestruturá-las, considerando alguns aspectos, como: tempo, distância, constância da velocidade da luz e eventos que ocorrem ao mesmo tempo, essenciais para a compreensão do conceito proposto; a Relatividade da Simultaneidade.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of iron catalyst thickness on the straightness of growth of carbon nanotube microelectromechanical systems (CNT-MEMS). One of the key benefits of CNT-MEMS is that they can potentially have very high aspect ratios. One of the challenges in attaining these high aspect ratios is maintaining device straightness; as these devices get taller, the edges tend to curve rather than grow straight vertically. Scanning electron mi- croscope images of samples grown using various iron catalyst thicknesses show that both straight growth and relatively good edge definition can be achieved using iron thicknesses between 7 and 8 nm. Below this thickness, individual CNT are well-aligned, but CNT forests are not necessarily straight. Above this thickness, the CNT forests are relatively straight, but individual CNT are not well-aligned and edge definition is very poor. Iron availability for CNT growth is also affected by a device's or feature's proximity to other regions of iron. By using an iron catalyst thickness ap- propriate for straight growth, and by adding borders of iron around features or devices, a designer can greatly improve straightness of growth for CNT-MEMS.

Histology is a technique that has any number of diagnostic uses in modern hospital laboratories. However, as a scientific method employed in the study of ancient and mummified remains, it appears to have lost its popularity.This project explores the advantages and limitations of histology as a technique for such studies. In order to do so, soft tissue and bone samples from ten early Roman Period mummies (30 BCE – 250 CE) from the Kellis 1 cemetery in the Dakhleh Oasis have been histologically examined.While this project focuses on the scientific technique of histology, and its application for the study of ancient remains, it also aims to be cross-disciplinary by incorporating scientific results from the ten mummies with the historical data and archaeological remains uncovered during excavations of the Kellis site. By bringing the results of science and Egyptology/archaeology together, it hoped that a better understanding of ancient Egyptian society could be achieved.

This work refers to an ethnographic case study conducted by two teachers of physics acting in 1st year high school classes of two Federal Institutions of Education located in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. Its goal was to identify the key aspects of the assessment considered by teachers of physics in the course of the evaluative process, examining the relationship between these aspects and what the Political-Pedagogic Project (PPP) recommends to the institutions in which the teachers work. Therefore, the methodology applied was organized as a Kelly’s Cycle of Experience, in five stages, which had the prospect of engaging the subjects in a process of interpretation and reinterpretation of designed and lived reality. The analyses were based on George Kelly’s Theory of Personal Constructs and on the evolution of ideas of Assessment defined by Guba and Lincoln as Generations of Evaluation. At the end of the research we realize that both the training courses and the political-educational projects exerted influence on the teachers’ evaluative practice and, because the courses of initial training had not appreciated systematic studies on assessment, their practices often reproduced the way in which they were evaluated as students. On the other hand, the guidelines about assessment contained in the institutions’ PPP and the teachers’ continuing education also offered subsidies so the teachers, each one in his particular way, submitted concepts of assessment and evaluative practices in an innovative view.
Este trabalho refere-se a um estudo de caso etnográfico realizado com dois professores de Física atuantes no 1º ano do Ensino Médio de duas Instituições Federais de Ensino localizadas na Região Metropolitana do Recife. Seu objetivo foi identificar os principais aspectos da Avaliação considerados por professores de Física, durante o processo avaliativo, analisando as relações existentes entre esses aspectos e o que recomenda o Projeto Político-Pedagógico (PPP) das instituições em que os professores atuam. Para tanto, a metodologia empregada foi organizada como um Ciclo da Experiência de Kelly, com cinco etapas, que tinham a perspectiva de engajar os sujeitos em um processo de interpretação e reinterpretação da realidade concebida e vivida. As análises foram fundamentadas na Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais de George Kelly e na evolução das idéias da Avaliação definidas por Guba e Lincoln como Gerações da Avaliação. Ao final da pesquisa percebemos que, tanto os cursos de formação, quanto os projetos político-pedagógicos exerceram influência nas práticas avaliativas desses professores e, pelo fato dos cursos de formação inicial não valorizarem estudos sistemáticos acerca da Avaliação, suas práticas avaliativas muitas vezes reproduziam a forma pela qual eles foram avaliados enquanto alunos. Entretanto, as orientações sobre Avaliação contidas nos PPP das instituições e a formação continuada dos professores também ofereceram subsídios para que os professores, de uma forma ou de outra, cada um ao seu modo, apresentassem concepções de Avaliação e práticas avaliativas numa perspectiva inovadora.

The current research deals with the constructive revision – in the cognitive structure of first year students in a public high school state, in the Uniform Rectilinear Motion (URM) conception, evolving from the Aristotelian to Galilean thinking. Students have a natural difficulty in understanding the existence of motion without a prime mover action – a Galilean concept – since they can only observe it in complex laboratory experiments or as a result of mental idealization. Differently, the Aristotelian conception permits an easier comprehension since it can be demonstrated from the sensorial observation of everyday experiments. In this work, through pedagogical activities based in the Kelly’s Experience Cycle (KEC), part of the Personal Constructs Theory (PCT), formulated by George Kelly, examined the URM concepts, as per Galileo and Aristotle and revised basic concepts of Physics related to the research topics of concern to the students, we intend to investigate whether the KCE is appropriate for the desired conceptual revision asking the following question: how to promote, among first year students in a public high school, the revision of Aristotelian thinking introducing Galilean logic? In order to reach our objective we did a didactic intervention based in moments of Cycle. The results obtained, indicate a quantity considerable of students that change from aristotelian’s conception to galilean’s conception. At the end of the research we came to the conclusion that the KEC method is appropriate to promote a change of students’ conception
Trata a presente pesquisa da revisão construtiva, na estrutura cognitiva dos alunos do 1º ano do ensino médio de uma escola pública estadual, da concepção de movimento retilíneo uniforme (MRU), do pensamento aristotélico para o galileano. Observa-se a dificuldade dos estudantes em compreender a existência de movimento sem a ação da força, oriunda da dificuldade de sua visualização no cotidiano, pois sua ocorrência exige condições laboratoriais de alta complexidade ou mentalmente idealizadas. A concepção aristotélica é de mais fácil verificação, pois origina-se da observação de eventos do nosso cotidiano. Neste trabalho, através de atividades fundamentadas no Ciclo da Experiência Kellyana (CEK), que faz parte da Teoria dos Construtos Pessoais (TCP), de George Kelly, nas concepções de MRU, segundo Galileu e Aristóteles e em conceitos básicos de Física, pretendemos investigar se o CEK é adequado para a desejada revisão conceitual, respondendo à seguinte indagação: Como promover entre alunos, a revisão do pensamento aristotélico para o de Galileu? Para a consecução da mudança, realizamos uma intervenção didática, baseada nos momentos do Ciclo. Os resultados obtidos indicaram uma quantidade relevante de alunos que passaram de uma concepção aristotélica para uma concepção galileana. Ao final do trabalho concluímos que o CEK é um método apropriado para promover uma mudança de concepção dos estudantes.

This thesis presents the results of Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) study of Li-ion battery active materials. The measurements have been performed on LiMn2O4 cathodes and graphite anodes extracted from commercial Li batteries at different states of charge and health. The study has been focused on measurements of Li spatial distribution and transport properties in the active electrode materials. Special attention has been paid to influence of fatigue caused by high C rate cycling on Li spatial distribution and local diffusion coefficient. Electrochemical Strain Microscopy (ESM) has been used to access Li transport properties at the nanoscale in LiMn2O4 cathodes. Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) has been used to examine Li spatial distribution in graphite anodes. ESM has been implemented and used in a single frequency mode out of the contact resonance for the first time. Signal-to-noise ratio analysis has been performed for a number of single- and multi-frequency modes used in ESM. The analysis allowed to establish criteria for a proper cantilever choice and an experimental setup for the optimized detection of surface displacements via lock-in amplifier. Transport properties of Li+ mobile ions in fresh and fatigued LiMn2O4 battery cathodes have been studied at the nanoscale via ESM using time-and voltage spectroscopies. Both Vegard and non-Vegard contributions to ESM signal have been identified in electrochemical hysteresis loops obtained on the fresh and fatigued samples. In fresh cathodes the Vegard contribution dominates the signal, while in fatigued samples different shape of hysteresis loops indicates additional contributions. Non-uniform spatial distribution of the electrochemical loop opening in LiMn2O4 particles studied in the fatigued samples indicates stronger variation of Li diffusion coefficients in fatigued samples’ as compared to the fresh one. Time spectroscopy measurements have revealed suppressed local Li diffusivity in fatigued samples by more than two orders of magnitude as compared to the fresh one. We attributed such reduction of the diffusion coefficient to the accumulation of point defects induced by high C-rate cycling and accompanied structural instability. This mechanism can be specifically important for high C-rate cycling. Li spatial distribution in fresh and fatigued graphite cathodes has been accessed via KPFM using a 2-pass amplitude modulation mode. Core-shell and mosaic surface potential structures have been observed on the fatigued and fresh anodes, respectively. The observed surface potential distributions have been attributed to the apparent Li concentration profiles in graphite. The core-shell potential distribution has been attributed to the remnant Li ions stacked in graphite particles causing irreversible capacity loss. The mosaic potential distribution has been attributed to inactive Li inside graphite at the starting stage of cycling. The results corroborate the “radial” model used to explain the specific capacity fading mechanism at high C rate cycling in Li-ion batteries.
Esta tese apresenta os resultados do estudo de Scanning Probe Microscopia (SPM) de materiais de baterias de ions de litio. As medidas foram executadas na cátodos de LiMn2O4 e ânodos de grafite extraidos de bateriais de litio comerciais em diferentes estados de carga e fadiga. O estudo concentrou-se na medição da distribuição de Li e propriedades de transporte dos materiais de eletrodo ativo. Especial atencao tem sido dada a influencia do ciclo de fadiga da elevada taxa C na distribuicao especial dos ions de Li e coeficiente de difusao. Microscopia de tensão eletroquímica (ESM) tem sido usada para acessar Li transporte propriedades em nanoescala em cátodos de LiMn2O4. Microscopia de força de sonda Kelvin (KPFM) tem sido usada para acessar a distribuição espacial de Li em anodos de grafite. ESM foi implementada e usada em um modo de única freqüência de ressonância o contato pela primeira vez. Análise de relação sinal-ruído foi feito para um número de monomodo e multimodo usados no ESM. A análise permite estabelecer critérios para um cantilever e uma instalação experimental para a detecção mais sensível de deslocamentos superficiais. Propriedades da mobilidade dos ions de lition em catodos de bateria LiMn2O4 frescos e fatigados foram estudados em nanoescala via ESM, espectroscopia de tempo e espectroscopia de tensão de transporte. Contribuições como sinal Vegard e non-Vegard ESM foram identificadas em ciclos de histerese eletroquímica obtidos em amostras frescas e fatigadas. Em cátodos frescos o sinal Vegard dominante, enquanto em amostras envelhecidas, a diferente ciclo de histerese indica contribuições adicionais. Distribuição espacial não-uniforme do ciclo aberto eletroquímico em partículas de LiMn2O4 foram estudadas nas amostras fatigadas indicando mais forte variação do coeficiente de difusão de Li das amostras fatigadas em microescala em comparação com a outra amostra. Medições de espectroscopia de tempo revelaram a ausencia de difusidade local em amostras fatigadas por mais de duas ordens de magnitude em comparação com a outra. Atribui-se tal redução do coeficiente de difusão o acúmulo de defeitos de ponto induzida pelo Ciclo de elevada taxa C e acompanhadas de instabilidade estrutural. Este mecanismo pode ser especialmente importante para ciclo de elevada taxa C. Distribuição espacial de Li em cátodos amostras fresca e fatigada grafite foi analisaa via KPFM no modo de modulação de amplitude 2-pass. Estruturas de superfícies potenciais core-shell e mosaico têm sido observadas em ânodos fatigados e frescos, respectivamente. As distribuições de superfícies potenciais observadas foram atribuídas para os perfis de concentração Li aparentes em grafite. Distribuição potencial core-shell tem sido atribuída para o ions remanescentes de Li empilhados em partículas de grafite, causando perda irreversível de capacidade. A distribuição de potencial de mosaico tem sido atribuída a Li inativo dentro do grafite na fase inicial do ciclo. Os resultados corroboram o modelo "radial" usado para explicar o mecanismo de desvanecimento de capacidade específica a alta taxa de C em baterias de íon-lítio.

O escritor australiano Peter Carey promove, em seu romance True History of the Kelly Gang, cuja primeira publicação ocorreu em 2000, a reinterpretação de um período histórico e também de um personagem da época, que se tornou uma figura forte na cultura australiana. A tradução desta obra foi publicada no Brasil em 2002 com o título A história do bando de Kelly. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar os efeitos que o estabelecimento de uma colônia penal causou na cultura e na literatura australianas, e a utilização do texto literário - sobretudo esta obra de Carey - como espaço de debate sobre a identidade nacional e de questionamentos ou respostas à antiga metrópole. Para tanto, este trabalho traça, em primeiro lugar, um panorama da história da Austrália, até a época em que viveu Ned Kelly, um fora-dalei que se tornou herói popular e ícone nacional, e do desenvolvimento da literatura no país. Em segundo lugar, são analisados alguns aspectos deste romance, entre os quais a crítica ao sistema colonial britânico, a oposição centro-margem representada pelo conflito entre as autoridades e o bando de Kelly, e o uso da variante australiana do inglês. Desta forma, procuramos mostrar que, neste romance, parte da história da Austrália - em especial o período colonial e o sistema de degredo, cuja influência ainda se faz sentir nos dias de hoje - são problematizados e colocados em discussão.
The Australian writer Peter Carey reinterprets, in his novel True History of the Kelly Gang, whose first publication took place in 2000, a historical period and also a character of that time who has become a strong figure in Australian culture. The translation of this book was published in Brazil in 2002, with the title A história do bando de Kelly. This Master's Degree Thesis has the objective of analyzing the effects that the settlement of a penal colony had on Australian culture and literature, and the use of literary texts - especially this work by Carey - as a space for debate on national identity and for questioning or striking back at the former centre. In order to do so, this work firstly presents a panorama of Australian history, up to the time Ned Kelly, an outlaw who became a popular hero and a national icon, lived, and a survey of the development of Australian literature. Then, some aspects of this novel are analyzed, such as the critique of the British colonial system, the opposition centre-margin represented by the conflict between the authorities and the Kelly gang, and the use of the Australian variant of English. Thus, it is possible to show that, in this novel, part of Australian history - particularly the colonial period and the transportation period, whose influence can still be felt nowadays - is questioned, discussed and reevaluated.

Underneath the romance, comedy and exoticism, South Pacific is a story that questioned core American values, exploring issues of race and power at a time when these topics were intensely relevant-the original opened just four years post WWII, on the heels of Roosevelt's aggressive expansionist response to domestic instabilities. Much has been written about the depiction of war and racial prejudice in South Pacific. However, examining such topics in the context of their cultural and political moment (both in 1949 and 2008) and through the lens of Terry Eagleton's unique take on morality, is not only a fascinating study, but an intensely relevant and unchartered endeavor. This work concerns the evolution of an American code of ethics as it has been reflected and constructed in both Broadway productions of Roger and Hammerstein's South Pacific (c.1949, 2008). Specifically, it examines the depiction of WWII, America's imperialistic foreign policy, and the function of American patriotism in light of Terry Eagleton's theories surrounding an evolving code of ethics in 20th/21st century America. By so doing, this thesis uncovers answers to the following questions: What were the cultural and political forces at work at the time South Pacific was created (both in 1949 and 2008), and how did these forces influence the contrasting depictions of war, imperialism and patriotism in each version of the musical? In what ways were these productions reflective of a code of ethics that evolved from what Eagleton would classify as moral realism (prescriptive of behavior) to moral nihilism (reflective of behavior)? How did the use of this increasingly reflexive moral code make this politically controversial musical more palatable, and therefore commercially viable during the contrasting political climates of WWII and the recent war on Iraq? Determining answers to questions such as these enables us as a society to look back on our history-on our mistakes and triumphs-and recognize our tendency to find pragmatic justification for our actions rather than acknowledging the possibility of the existence of objective truth, which remains unchanged through time and circumstance.

Abstract:
Drug Delivery Systems represent a useful strategy to improve water solubility, improper dissolution rate, permeation or absorption, bioavailability, little pharmacokinetics and physical-chemical stability of natural substances as essential oils (EOs), peptides and khellin. In the last years a remarkable number of publications on the antimicrobial and antifungal activity of EOs appeared in the literature, strongly motivated from the growing resistance. Khellin, instead, is a natural furanochromone, extracted from the plant Amni visnaga, having anti-vitiligo, antiinflammatory and analgesic activities. Considering this context, the aim of my PhD project was the design, optimization, characterisation and study of performance of nanocarriers loaded with the over cited compounds for topical, transdermal and oral delivery. All nanocarriers were physically and morphological characterized, their stability over time were evaluated as their ability to encapsulate and release the active principles. The EOs of Salvia triloba, Rosmarinus officinalis and Artemisia annua were chemically characterized, encapsulated in appropriate liposomal formulation and tested for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal or antibacterial activities. Khellin were loaded in ascosomes, vesicles prepared with Ottanoyl or Decanoyl-6-O-Ascorbic Acid Esters, in order to obtain nanocarriers value for topical and transdermal activity with added antioxidant. The structural and physical characteristics of the resulting colloidal dispersion were compared to conventional liposomes and further investigated by SAXS and DSC as their permeation and antioxidant capacities. Finally, were developed and optimised semisolid formulations of khellin vesicles which were tested also for the potential liver toxicity of khellin on rats. Moreover, khellin was loaded in a Nanostructured lipid carrier specifically ideated for oral administration. After the conventional characterization and the stability test in gastrointestinal medium, the system were evaluated for its permeation capacity through PAMPA assay and Caco-2 cells. To conclude, a synthetic conjugated peptide (PalmSA1-III), have been loaded in vesicular systems in order to enhance its permeation in the skin and test its activity in fibroblasts for its protective effect against collagen degradation. The findings on all the over cited drug delivery systems suggest that these formulations can decrease the natural substances limits and optimize their biological properties proving to be useful in clinical practice after further investigations. I DDS rappresentano una strategia utile per migliorare la solubilità in acqua, la dissoluzione, la permeazione o l'assorbimento, la biodisponibilità, la scarsa farmacocinetica e la stabilità fisico-chimica delle sostanze naturali come oli essenziali (EO), peptidi e kellina. Negli ultimi anni sono state pubblicate numerose pubblicazioni sull'attività antimicrobica e antimicotica degli OE, fortemente motivate dalla crescente resistenza dei microrganismi ai farmaci convenzionali. La kellina, invece, è un furanochromone naturale, estratto dalla pianta Ammi visnaga, con attività anti-vitiligine, antiinfiammatoria e analgesica. Considerando questo contesto, l'obiettivo del mio progetto di dottorato è stato la progettazione, l'ottimizzazione, la caratterizzazione e lo studio dei nanocarrier caricati con i composti sopra citati per uso topico, transdermico o orale. Tutti i nanocarrier sono stati caratterizzati fisicamente e morfologicamente, e sono state valutate la loro stabilità nel tempo e la loro capacità di incapsulare e rilasciare i principi attivi. Gli EO di Salvia triloba, Rosmarinus officinalis e Artemisia annua sono stati caratterizzati chimicamente, incapsulati in un'adeguata formulazione liposomiale e testati per le loro attività antiossidanti, antinfiammatorie, antimicotiche o antibatteriche. La kellina è stata caricata in ascosomi, vescicole preparate con ascorbil ottanoato o decnoato, al fine di ottenere un ottimo nanocarrier per uso topico e transdermico con capacità antiossidante ed ad alta permeazione. Le caratteristiche strutturali e fisiche della risultante dispersione colloidale sono state confrontate con i liposomi convenzionali e ulteriormente studiate con SAXS e DSC. Infine, sono state sviluppate e ottimizzate formulazioni semisolide con gli ascosomi di kellina, testate anche per la potenziale tossicità epatica sui ratti. Inoltre, la kellina è anche stata caricata in un veicolo lipidico nanostrutturato (NLC) appositamente ideato per la somministrazione orale. Dopo la caratterizzazione convenzionale ed il test di stabilità nel mezzo gastrointestinale, tale sistema è stato valutato per la sua capacità di permeazione attraverso il dosaggio PAMPA e le cellule Caco-2. Per concludere, un peptide coniugato sintetico (PalmSA1-III) è stato caricato nei sistemi vescicolari al fine di migliorare la sua permeazione nella pelle e testare la sua attività nei fibroblasti per il suo effetto protettivo contro la degradazione del collagene. I risultati su tutti i sistemi di consegna dei farmaci sopra citati suggeriscono che queste formulazioni possono ridurre i limiti delle sostanze naturali e ottimizzare le loro proprietà biologiche dimostrando di poter essere utili anche nella pratica clinica.
