Abstract:
Thomas Hardy has been one of the best-loved novelists to Chinese readers for nearly a century, which is an uncanny phenomenon in the circle of literature reception and circulation in China. It seems that Hardy has some magic power to have kept attracting Chinese literature lovers with his keen insight into nature, profound reflection on humanity and whole-hearted concern about human fate in the vast universe. Hardy’s works saturated with nostalgic sentiments for the traditional way of rural life exert unusual resonance in Chinese readers in terms of receptional aesthetic. There is no denial that Hardy is rather loved and admired by generation upon generation of Chinese literates, which can find expression in his exceeding popularity among readers from all trades and walks, from all levels, which ranges from middle school students to professors. In China, his prestige ranks only after Shakespeare among English persons of letters.

Abstract:
Abstract The article explores whether reading Lene Ask’s documentary graphic novel Kjære Rikard (‘Dear Rikard’) may provide children and adults with training in, and an increased awareness of the importance of, emotional literacy and theory of mind. In order to investigate this question, the authors of the article conduct a close reading of Ask’s novel, using terminology from narratology, picture book and comics’ theory, and look for connections between the findings from the analyses and insights from reader-response theory and cognitive literary studies. The authors suggest that in combination, Ask’s fictive and documentarist drawings and the excerpts from the hand-written correspondence between young Rikard in Stavanger and his father, a missionary in Madagaskar in the 1890s, invite both children and adult readers to develop a keen sense of the value of emotional literacy and theory of mind.

The text by Derrida entitled, in English, Touching On – Jean-Luc Nancy is a text about neither ‘touching’ nor Jean-Luc Nancy, in any easy sense. Derrida never really gets started with touch and goes out of his way to correct Nancy's use of the term ‘deconstruction’. Following some exemplary cases of this in the book, this article demonstrates the technical differences between Derrida and Nancy that the former is keen to impress upon his readers.

Once again, we are entering the holiday season and it is a good time to thank all of the people who make RUSQ possible. First off, I would like to recognize the members of the RUSQ board for volume 55: Jenny S. Bossaller, PhD; Heidi L. M. Jacobs; Kate Kosturski; Scott Seaman; Carol Singer; Nicolette Sosulski; Laurel Tarulli; David A. Tyckoson; Chiang A. Wang; and Neal Wyatt, PhD. The board members are the first readers of submissions to the journal, and without their thoughtful critiques and keen suggestions for improvements, the pieces that we publish would not be as strong. The board members also offer guidance to the editor in terms of directions for the journals, and I am grateful for their help in making sure that RUSQ is valuable to our readers.

First of all we want to thank the general editors of the Nordic Journal of Linguistics for this opportunity to present to the readers of one of the most important linguistics journals in Northern Europe some specimens of sociolinguistic research. When we were approached by the general editors, we wholeheartedly agreed that this would be a good idea, although – or rather, precisely for this reason – sociolinguists in general have not been keen on publishing in NJL in the past. We have a modest hope that the present issue will change this.

Sir Hew Strachan of the University of St Andrews is the doyen of World War I studies. He approached his work from a serious multinational, multilingual, and comparative perspective. He was never afraid to challenge well-established interpretations and to add fresh analyses of concepts ranging from total war to trench warfare. He was always keen to include diplomacy, politics, imperialism, industrialization, and the sinews of war in his writings. From ‘origins’ to ‘consequences’, Strachan led his readers through the challenging shoals of Great War studies. One can hardly wait for the second instalment of his opus, The First World War: No Quarter.

Abstract:
Today’s students are accustomed to a world where information is available on-demand, anywhere and anytime. They bring this expectation to their academic world where they want to work cooperatively and flexibly, using the modern information processing tools and access with which they are familiar. New hardware platforms such as e-Readers and tablet computers have made substantial inroads in the consumer market. E-Readers are becoming more prevalent in universities – replacing the need for physical textbooks, lecturing notes and other academic documents. Many universities are now running pilot programs, while some are already using e-Readers. Tablet computers, apart from their ability to read, edit or create various types of information documents, also offer additional features such as collaborative and social networking services. This empirical research project investigated student perspectives on the educational use of e-Readers and tablets within the University of Cape Town. A questionnaire was distributed to a significant portion of the student population and stratified according to seniority and faculty. Quantitative data was gathered and analysed on themes ranging from awareness to preferences to facilitating conditions around e-Readers within the academic environment. The students sent a clear signal: that they are keen to embrace these new technologies and the advantages they offer. E-Books can be updated automatically and downloaded to e-Readers instantly from almost anywhere in the world. Students feel they would benefit greatly through the use of e-Readers and many believe they are set to replace books completely. Having access to a portable library of information in their backpacks would benefit both students and the environment. However, there are a number of barriers to the comprehensive introduction of these technologies, including the cost of the devices; cost, rights and file format of e-books; the need for a critical mass of textbooks available in digital format and device characteristics such as battery life, and ubiquitous Wi-Fi access.

Abstract:
AbstractThe East India Company began to establish lending libraries for soldiers at its stations in India from about 1891 and, by the early 1830s, the majority of those responsible for the day-to-day operation of these institutions were keen to stress their beneficial effect upon the readers who frequented them. In a series of reports that were written at this time station chaplains and commanding officers emphasised that reading was having a positive effect upon the men's behaviour. What also emerges from these reports is evidence of a contemporary belief that the ‘setting’ in which reading took place determined the degree to which the activity was beneficial.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the politics and multi-functionality of storytelling in Diana Abu-Jaber’s novel Crescent (2003). I argue that the strategic use of storytelling places Crescent as a complex hybrid text that projects the nature, and development, of Arab American literature in the contemporary era. In addition to having the practice of storytelling as an apparatus to project identity in Crescent, Abu-Jaber re-appropriates its empowered status in Arab culture as well as politicizes its image in the mind of her readers. Besides employing critical and analytical approaches to the novel, this paper relies on arguments and perspectives of prominent postcolonial and literary critics and theorists such as Edward Said, Suzanne Keen, Walter Benjamin, and Samaya Sami Sabry, to name a few.

Abstract:
The fortunes of the two weekly magazines Triunfo and La Calle reflect the decline of the Marxist left in Spain during the transition to democracy. While Triunfo evolved from a position of resistance under the Franco regime towards a pragmatism that disenchanted many of its readers, in 1978, the creation of the new weekly La Calle represented a rallying cry to a readership that had already begun to drift away from the Marxist left, both in political terms and in terms of the kind of publication it was keen to buy. The study of the two magazines in these crucial years of the transition serves to exemplify the demise of the Spanish left: with time, both lost their market niche to more moderate and more profitable publications.

To most readers, Aristotle's many references to nature throughout the first book of thePoliticsimply a foundational role for nature outside and prior to politics. Aristotle, they claim, pairs nature with necessity and, thus, sets nature as a standard that fixes the boundaries of inclusion and exclusion in political life. Through readings of Aristotle on the nature of citizens, slaves, and foreigners in thePolitics, this essay argues, in contrast, that, to Aristotle, nature, especially human nature, is changeable and shaped by politics. Through an analysis of Aristotle's philosophical and scientific treatments of nature in theMetaphysicsandPhysics, this essay demonstrates that in order to preserve what he takes to be characteristic and also constitutive of a distinctively human way of living—prohaireticactivity—Aristotle is especially keen to guard against any assimilation of nature to necessity.

The participants will be able to implement the CCF model in real estate firm valuation. The participants will be able to compare CCF and free cash flow to the firm (FCFF) models. The participants will be able to evaluate the benefits of CCF over FCFF. The readers will be able to construct the CCF valuation model for firm valuation. Case overview/synopsis On 19th April 2019, Mr Kai, an analyst tracking real estate firms was excited to present to his team a new robust technique of firm valuation suitable for real estate companies, namely, the CCF technique and was also keen to deliberate on its application. Though the investment scope using this technique could be located in Godrej properties (GP), a reputed brand and the largest listed real estate developer by sales in 2018, yet, he was concerned about the assumptions of growth of real estate industry in India, in general, and the GP in particular. Importantly, this was because the real estate market in India was undergoing many structural changes. For instance, the buyers’ preferences were changing and unsold inventory in the industry was at its peak. Under these market conditions, an announcement was made by GP about a target return on equity of 20% in 2018–2023 expecting a dominant place in the real estate market in India, which also carried the threat of jeopardizing the reputation of GP, if under any circumstance the target was not accomplished. In January 2020, the Russian-language bimonthly “Russia in Global Affairs” published an article on “memory politics” and related conflicts, following a roundtable hosted by the magazine (Rossiya, 2020). To our amazement, the discussion caused a very keen reaction, especially in Europe. Our modest publication was immediately dubbed as nearly a forge of Kremlin ideas regarding “memory wars,” which, of course, is flattering, but, alas, is not true. In general, the willingness to see behind everything a conspiracy of dark forces and the belief that everything happens for a reason, well-known to us from our own history, have now spectacularly become commonplace. So, since the topic triggered such a powerful response, we decided to take it further by asking members of the academic community in different countries how they assess the current state of affairs in “memory politics.” They came up with a very broad range of opinions, which we gladly share with our readers.

Abstract:
In this review of the novels and stories by the contemporary Russian author I. Bogatyreva, winner of numerous literary awards, including The Student Booker 2016, the critic highlights the principal motifs of her plots, including the motif of travel, pilgrimage, and the search of a certain human common ground: be it age, philosophy, or nationality. The paper also examines the chronotope and the writer’s use of mythological allusions, which permeate both her historical and modern day-based novels, only to conclude that ‘emerging adulthood’, a term from the psychological studies of young adults, is the most apt way to describe Bogatyreva’s prose. That the writer maintains keen interest in the subject is not only because of her role as ‘a real master of innovation in young Russian prose’ (quoted from the blurb on the cover of her prize-winning novel Kadyn), but due to its relevance for contemporary young adult readers, themselves in search of their models growing up and their future destiny.

Abstract:
Fitzgerald is considered by many to be the spokesperson of the 1920’s post-World War I, offering his readers a distinctive look into the Golden Age of the U.S.A.. This article focuses on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece The great Gatsby (2001) and its representation and criticism of the historical context in which author and novel are inserted: the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties of the United States of America. For this purpose, our critical framework is based on Bloom’s (2006) and Heise’s (2001) studies on the subject, targeting a pertinent dialogue with Fitzgerald’ s work. As a result of our articulation between the critical framework and the corpus, we were able to recognize how the American author managed to express in his work a keen perception of the social conventions and the morals of the Jazz Age, of both the overt (the parties and the ostentation) and the covert aspects (the emptiness of that society and the unspoken post-war dread) of his time.

Abstract:
A Modernist at heart, writing in the wake of the polyglot tradition firmly established in the first half of the twentieth century by Joyce's operatic Babels and Pound's symphonic Cantos, Robert Lowell was a poet who spoke in many voices, a master of linguistic personae. Switching with baffling ease from the “otherworldly” Puritanic gloom shrouding his recreation of his New England ancestors, to the very worldly evocation of his own personal life, he was a writer with a keen ear for layering various types of discourse within the span of one poem. What is more, as was the case with Joyce or Pound, his mastery of tone and voice enabled him to let his readers overhear what I am tempted to call a “cultural polyphony” sounding in each of his texts, in the fleeting utterance of one single word — or better still, as I hope to demonstrate, in the discreet note of one syllable, one letter.

Keen readers of the BJN will have noticed the recent appearance of ‘conflict of interest’ statements and of more complete descriptions of the contribution of each author to the publication. I have introduced these innovations in order to increase the transparency of the articles that we publish in the BJN; further strategies to increase accuracy, transparency and accountability of papers published in the journal will follow in order to encourage a climate of intellectual honesty and to decrease the risk of misconduct. In particular, the journal will follow as closely as possible the recommendations and guidelines of the Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE)(1) and of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)(2). COPE and ICMJE have made available a range of guidelines aimed at establishing best practice in scientific publishing. These include guidelines for authors and for the conduct of reviewers, editorial boards and editors. Many of the guidelines are already followed by the BJN, but others are not yet fully in place.

Abstract:
This article derives from an ongoing project to map regional print culture in twentieth-century Queensland. An essentially qualitative methodology combined survey questionnaires with selected follow-up interviews. Conscious of the focus on metropolitan reading within existing Australia Council studies (1990, 1995), we were keen to explore issues of cultural consumption, distribution, exchange and community identity in a regional context. Subsequently, however, we interrogated the notion of regionality itself and identified a reading sub-group within the larger sample of fifty responses, living outside larger regional centres like Rockhampton and Townsville. The study documents and explores reading patterns of this rural group whose experiences can all too easily be subsumed within the broader ‘regional’ category. Lyons' and Taksa's valuable study of New South Wales, Australian Readers Remember, makes this assumption, admitting to ‘a definite bias in favour of Sydney at the expense of country districts’ while acknowledging that ‘cultural attitudes differ in rural environments’ (1992: 22–23).

Full text
Abstract:
Dear editor, We read with interest the article “Prevalence of Anaemia in Children Diagnosed with Pneumonia in a Tertiary Hospital in Quito, Ecuador” in the recent issue of your esteemed journal and found it very useful and informative1. This article presents the prevalence of anemia in children with pneumonia. However, there are certain points we would like to comment and highlight which might bring more clarity to this issue and will be useful to the readers of JNPS. In the abstract (conclusion section), the authors have mentioned that “anaemia or nutritional deficiencies could be a risk factor for respiratory diseases”. The authors seem to draw a conclusion on “nutritional deficiencies” as a risk factor for respiratory disease without any evidence or data provided in the results. We feel that it should better be omitted from the conclusion. The authors have mentioned that they used physical findings such as: fever, tachypnea, breathing difficulties, rhonchi, crackles, and wheezing to diagnose pneumonia and them again have mentioned using WHO tachypnea threshold to diagnose pneumonia. It is very unlikely for all the 80 cases to have all the above listed physical findings. Diagnosis of pneumonia in children remains an important yet difficult clinical problem. WHO criteria which uses the presence of cough, fast breathing and chest indrawing to diagnose pneumonia may over-estimate the diagnosis of actual pneumonia2. Chest radiograph remains a diagnostic test of choice in hospitals3. The readers would be keen to know which diagnostic criteria the authors had used to diagnose pneumonia (either clinical or radiological?). If they had used the clinical criteria, what were the exact parameters used to diagnose pneumonia needs further clarification. The authors also need to reply the reason of not including cough and retractions in the inclusion criteria to diagnose pneumonia. The readers would also be keen to know that if any attempt was made to exclude pneumonia like illnesses e.g., bronchiolitis, asthma or cardiac diseases which can mimic pneumonia. The authors have mentioned that diagnosis of concomitant conditions that could affect anthropometric or haemoglobin parameters, or that could predispose to pneumonia were excluded. The readers would be interested to know (a) what anthropometric parameters or hemoglobin parameters were excluded and (b) what factors predisposing to pneumonia were excluded which is missing in the material and methods. The authors have concluded that anaemia is a frequent condition in paediatric pneumonia and could be a risk factor for respiratory diseases. The study done by the authors was a cross-sectional study which has always a chance of selection bias4. The increased prevalence of anemia in pneumonia patients could have been due to chance, we do not know. Therefore, it is very difficult to answer (in a cross-sectional study) either anemia is prevalent in children with pneumonia or not unless we have some cohort studies on the same. This should have been mentioned as one of the limitations of the study. The readers would be interested to know regarding any iron supplements in children aged more than 3 years which might be the cause of decrease prevalence of anemia in this age group. In the discussion section, the authors have tried to convince that anemia in the study groups was most likely due to iron deficiency. They have used hemoglobin, MCV and RDW to support the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia. The sensitivity and specificity of MCV to diagnose IDA is 61.7% and 59.1% respectively with a positive predictive value of 70% 5 whereas using RDW as a criteria to diagnose IDA has a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 53.4%6. In the discussion, the authors have emphasized iron deficiency as the cause of anemia in the cases. The authors need to explain that how can they be sure that all the cases of anemia in their study was due to iron deficiency without undergoing iron profile (serum ferritin, % saturation, TIBC). It is well known that with subclinical infection, serum iron concentrations are reduced, altering the synthesis of hemoglobin, the main indicator of anemia7. The readers would be interested to know if any attempts were made to exclude those subclinical infections from the enrolled cases with pneumonia.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the notion of “post‐literacy,” a presumption that posits reading will be transformed by electronic devices into an experience rather different than printed text readers encounter, and that, perhaps, a level of post‐literacy has already been reached given the plethora of e‐reading devices currently available.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses a literature review and commentary on this topic that has been addressed by writers and researchers.FindingsLibrarians would agree that there is increasing evidence of a digital shift in the reading habits of their patrons, thus supporting the premise of a post‐literate environment. In order to meet the challenge within this change environment, libraries will need to plan their collections and services expeditiously and measure their expenditures differently each year to serve a public keen on an interest in digital reading materials.Originality/valueThe value in addressing this issue is to consider some of the evidence suggesting that the transformation of reading from a traditional print engagement with text to a model that will be largely digital is currently underway.

Abstract:
The Spirit of Bandung is marked by its idealism, a state of mind few associate with the revolutionary Martinican physician and psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, who is perhaps best known for Les damnés de la terre, in particular its opening chapter on violence. And yet, Fanon’s work, too, is marked by a keen sense of hope as he urges himself and his readers, “[to] make a new start, develop a new way of thinking, and endeavor to create a new man.” As a clinician and philosopher who combined phenomenology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis in his work, Fanon draws our attention to the importance of healing the physical, affective, and epistemological wounds of anti-black racism by attending to the social relations that produce them. This paper takes as a point of departure Fanon’s “Letter to the Resident Minister (1956),” in which he resigns from his post as Médecin-Chef de service at the Psychiatric Hospital of Blida-Joineville in war-torn Algeria. More than a gesture, I argue that Fanon’s active withdrawal as a representative of French colonialism enabled Fanon to write Wretched of the Earth and raises the question of what role hopeful resignation can have in achieving decolonial healing.

This article presents a forum for the personal views of four significant contributors to the conceptualization and implementation of transition programming as it exists in this country today. These individuals were selected from among a number of active contributors to the transition movement as representative spokespersons for the field. The questions posed by the guest editors were developed from ideas and concerns that surfaced in the many manuscripts submitted for consideration in this special issue. Some of the issues raised in the questions reflect concerns expressed openly by professionals in the field, while others were inferred from more subtle or cautious statements. Each contributor received a set of questions to address. Each question was given to at least two contributors. They were encouraged to respond not only to their own set, but to any question of interest contained in other contributors' sets as well. As a result, a few questions were addressed by all four contributors. Their responses appear to reflect some consensus regarding the importance of the issues and trends suggested in the questions. Even so, the substance of their responses reflects a range of positions that would provoke keen consideration by readers.

Abstract:
Poetry reading is since 2011 part of the core content in the subject of Swedish at both primary and secondary level. However, to date there is little research on poetry pedagogy that may provide guidance to teachers and poetry reading pedagogy for secondary students is an especially understudied area. Early research has developed knowledge on poetry reception in class but little is known about how secondary students read and use poetry in their spare time. Knowledge of the leisure uses of poetry could have implications for pedagogy. The aim of this study is to map and develop knowledge of how keen readers of poetry became interested in the genre and use poetry today in their spare time. The material consists of 21 semi-structured online interviews. The analysis shows that participants tend to come from families that read and value literature. The participants generally develop an interest in poetry during late adolescence. Reading is the most common leisure activity. There is little online activity with poetry in the group. Many read poetry to be inspired and integrate what they read in other texts, images and music. Participants tend to prefer lyric poetry and a male western canon is dominant in their examples of favourite poets.

Abstract:
Writing news for newspapers and websites typically demands conformity to a style that promotes clarity and ease of reading, and includes a publication’s house style, that inflexible set of rules that ensures things—from minutiae like monetary values to the great events of history—are expressed consistently every time they are mentioned. Against a background of disruptive technological changes in the wider world of journalism, this article grew out of the authors’ interest in the new style demands that arguably have arisen with the advent of online publishing. If online readers have a different set of habits—and researchers assure us they do—then how is house style being changed to accommodate this? Are newspapers with websites differentiating their online copy from their print copy? Or are they still stuck with so-called ‘shovelware’? Keen to ensure the university production journalism courses on which they teach are reflecting industry practice, the researchers surveyed and interviewed reporters, subeditors and editors from titles across Australia and New Zealand to find out, and interviewed the online editor of NZ’s largest newspaper. The research supports our hypothesis—that newsrooms are aware of a need to develop style guidelines for their online news stories but most have yet to truly grapple with the issue.

Abstract:
Purpose: Singapore’s education system is known for its robust curriculum and excellent results. It is also a system of keen competitiveness and high pressure. This article addresses how such an education system responds to the issue of student well-being. Design/Approach/Methods: This article analyses the recent initiatives and shift in education philosophy in Singapore’s education system, which have a bearing on the issue of student well-being. Findings: This article argues that while there are direct efforts to address student well-being, the direction Singapore is taking is to pursue a holistic education paradigm, in which education is engaging, joyful, meaningful, and values-based. This article also argues that such a paradigm goes beyond the current well-being agenda and is aligned with a view that education should be about wholeness and purpose. While there are challenges associated with these changes, the Singapore experience suggests that the more we focus on holistic education, rather than interpret student well-being narrowly, the more wellness the students may actually and eventually experience. Originality/Value: This article brings to readers learning points from Singapore regarding student well-being, as the country grapples with change to develop a generation of young people, whose beings are and will continue to be well.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the legal paradigm of multiple Sharia' board directorship practice from the Sharia' law concept of Maslahah Al-Mursalah (public interest). Design/methodology/approach It uses a doctrinal research method that relies on the commonly referred sources of Quran and Sunnah, with a specific focus on Maslahah Al-Mursalah and, where applicable, commentaries by contemporary scholars, academics and practitioners as well as translations of classical book of Fiqh. This study scrutinises the polarity of views concerning the distinct Masyaqqah (necessity) surrounding the practice in discussion: the Masyaqqah that encourages and one that discourages the application of the practice. Findings This study is keen to suggest the industry to adopt a cautious approach and consider exploring a corporate governance framework that appraises the theoretical and practical Sharia' issues concerning its application in cognisance of its adversarial influence towards the sustainability of Islamic banking industry. Originality/value Since Murat Unal’s study of multiple Sharia' board directorships in 2009 and 2011, empirical works that scrutinise the practice from the Sharia' law perspective have remained limited or almost non-existent. It is aspired that this study may assist fellow readers and future researchers alike in evaluating and appreciating the divergent views surrounding the application of this practice in Islamic banking.

Abstract:
AbstractThe trend in the United States is to treat the underwater unexploded ordnance (UXO) problem the same as the land problem. This is fundamentally flawed. Not only must underwater sites be treated differently than land sites, but each underwater site must be treated differently, bringing to bear all possible solutions to develop the best course(s) of action. Although many sites will have similar assets applied to the solution, there will be no cookie-cutter solution. Because of the dynamic nature of the underwater environment, an underwater UXO operation is distinctly unique from a land operation. As the environment is dynamic, so must the solution be. Flexibility in planning and execution of the production operation is a necessity in underwater UXO activities. That fact requires a different type of work force; one trained and encouraged to innovate and keen to be involved in the planning process. The problem facing the underwater ordnance industry is a production problem: achieving production that must be safe, efficient, cost effective, and beneficial. The underwater UXO industry is heavily populated with experts in tactical operations involving defense explosives, i.e., mines, in military operations. That expertise must be balanced with professionals with production experience. This article will compile, analyze, and compare years of successful experience in underwater operations and UXO removal. At the conclusion, readers will have a better understanding of problems encountered throughout the planning and execution of underwater UXO removal actions and subsequent solutions.

The problem of studying the language of press in mass media is very important and practically significant. The competition that has developed in recent years on the publishing market, the large-scale offensive of the Internet, and the development of information technologies compel journalists working in periodicals, including Belarusian ones, to seek new forms of attracting reader’s attention and to keep their readers. The ability of the author of the publication to create the necessary level of attraction in communication with the interlocutor-reader depends not only on knowledge of the psychological component of this phenomenon, but also on the effective use of various means of communication, elements of different language levels (in particular, phonetics, graphics, syntax). In Belarusian periodicals published in Russian the potential of using emotionally and expressively colored elements as well as occasional words is growing, including non-standard formation.

Roseveare, Chris. "Editorial." Acute Medicine Journal 7, no. 2 (April 1, 2008): 62. http://dx.doi.org/10.52964/amja.0196.

Abstract:
Whether acute medicine registrars should have the opportunity to acquire a procedural skill during their training has been the subject of considerable debate over recent years. The issue often dominates discussion amongst trainees and trainers alike at national meetings; exchanges are frequently heated and prolonged, highlighting the strength of feeling on all sides regarding the challenges which this creates. So the inclusion of three articles relating to this subject within this edition of Acute Medicine is not in any way disproportionate. In the past, much of the debate has centred on the concept of the ‘Sanity Session’ – the idea being that specialist acute physicians might need some clinical activity outside the acute arena to help prevent ‘burnout’. The three articles in this edition focus more specifi – cally on the issue of bedside investigation in the clinical setting. Many of us will recognise the scenario of the acutely unwell, hypotensive patient, for whom an urgent echocardiogram or ultrasound would enable great strides towards a diagnosis. Extracting a radiologist or cardiologist from their respective departments often requires a talent for negotiation of which a member of the Diplomatic Corps would be proud. Access to the equipment and possession of the necessary skills to undertake such procedures at the bedside would be a great asset for any Acute Medical Unit. While some units are undoubtedly already making great strides in this direction, this often results from the enthusiasm of individuals, many of whom have been trained in other specialities before moving to Acute Medicine. The statement from the British Society of Echocardiography on p95 should be viewed as an important step in identifying a level of training in which is feasible for trainees in acute medicine. The Royal College of Radiologists has also recently produced recommendations for training in ultrasound, which is described in detail by John Lorains; Mark Mallet also highlights some of the practical challenges which may arise in establishing an acute medical ultrasound service. Readers of this journal may note a slight change in the format, with fewer ‘commissioned’ review articles than in previous editions. The editorial team has been pleased to receive an increased number of unsolicited articles over recent months, which has facilitated this change. As the speciality continues to develop, a larger number of research-orientated papers are also beginning to fi lter through, which will be included over future editions. This increased number of submissions requires that a more rigorous review process is introduced. This will require an expanded team of editorial referees in the future. If any reader is interested in volunteering to help in this way, I would be grateful if you could email me at the address on this page, indicating your areas of interest and expertise. In addition any feedback from readers regarding the future format of the journal would be most welcome. I am also keen to establish a ‘correspondence’ section for future editions, so if any of the articles in this edition have raised your heckles, or reminded you of similar experiences which you wish to share, I would be delighted to receive these.

Abstract:
Stefan Kisielewski’s intellectual struggle with Polish communism: Stefan Kisielewski (1911–1991) a Polish novelist, composer, music critic, essayist, feature writer and a politician, was an exceptional personage in post‑World War II Poland. In his features, published in Tygodnik Powszechny since 1945, in a light, ironic and allusive way to prevent censorship, he described the Polish reality that his readers were acquainted with, in a way that revealed the real causes of the phenomena he observed. The truth was simple: the communist reality was the result of politico‑economic system that was imposed based on a Marxist theory of economy. Kisielewski’s criticism of communism was not just a matter of a keen observation and sensible conclusions; it was based on his studies of Marxism that he began before World War II. In turn, in Wilhelm Röpke’s Die Gesellschaftskrisis der Gegenwart (1942), he found an accurate characterisation of the socialist economy and an explanation for its non‑functioning. The second important reason for his criticism of communism was Kisielewski’s Catholicism, which operated as a counter‑balance to Marxism, combined with the idea of a liberal‑democratic regime. In his later years, Kisielewski criticised the social teachings of the Catholic Church, and suggested a new idea that they were based on “the theology of profit” (a prefiguration of the encyclical Centesimus Annus) as an ideological justification of the attitudes necessary for the functioning of the market economy in Poland. He even suggested the implementation of a dictatorship to avoid long parliamentary democratic procedures, and in this way to establish a quick and effective market economy on the ruins of socialism.

Abstract:
MAMMALOGISTS who set out to acquaint themselves with a general understanding of the significance of genetics in conservation biology via Frankham, Ballou and Briscoe’s 2002 offering, Introduction to Conservation Genetics, may be forgiven a little reticence in tackling its successor, A Primer of Conservation Genetics. The first book was originally touted as providing an ‘accessible introduction’ to the field. However the substantial size of Introduction to Conservation Genetics - partly due to repetition of concepts among chapters intended to provide the basis for undergraduate lectures - may be sufficient to deter all but the keenest professional student. For readers whose ‘study’ time is concentrated into office coffee breaks, train commutes or bed-time reading A Primer of Conservation Genetics is an infinitely better choice (as it is for less-specialist undergraduate courses). Professional wildlife managers these days are expected or even legally compelled to incorporate genetic issues into management programs and/or avail themselves of multi-disciplinary sources of information including that provided by ‘molecular ecologists’. However the conservation genetics revolution has occurred sufficiently recently that it is only just beginning to infiltrate University teaching. Fortunately the false dichotomy between genetics and whole organism biology is breaking down, and the former is now recognised as providing valuable tools that undergraduate students are keen to master as part of a holistic education in biology. Nonetheless most practising wildlife managers have probably received little formal genetics training any relevance. A Primer of Conservation Genetics is ideal for absolute beginners as well as those seeking to consolidate knowledge. The authors bring to the book the wealth of their own experience in laboratory experimentation, hands-on genetic management and empirical data collection.

Abstract:
Abstract During the first half of the 19th century, liberal and nationalist uprisings erupted in all corners of Europe. While militant revolutionaries fought against restorative monarchies for more tolerant legislation or even full national independence, their countries slid into turmoil. In this European struggle, which set parts of Germany, Poland, France and Italy aflame, Ludwik Mierosławski (1814–1878) was one of the key insurgents. Besides being a keen partisan of Polish independence, Mierosławski enjoyed thorough military training and proved himself an astute theoretician of military strategy. It might be argued that he was probably one of the most inventive minds of his time, creating among other things an early tank vehicle and a bulletproof knapsack that could be used as a shield. This article brings a hitherto unknown invention of Mierosławski to light: A strategy game depicting military maneuvers on an abstract map. Defying complicated rules and adhering to pure simplicity, the game was both fast-learning and captivating. Moreover, contemporary critics praised its way of introducing players to the fundamentals of strategic thinking and military geography. Several matches were even played at the French military academy at St. Cyr in 1858. The extensive research of this article not only reveals the background of Mierosławski’s invention but also his methods of making the complete game public. The last chapter of this contribution contains a summary of the game rules, enabling the readers to bring this invention to life by themselves. In the end, the study of his game allows us to approach and discover Mierosławski’s ideas and ways of thinking, thereby shedding further light on this complex personality.

Abstract:
The city as a physical entity engages an outstanding position in world literature. Some writers show its admirable and gorgeous sides. The majority of writers, however, see the city as the place of hard times, difficult life and endless commitments. The four poets chosen in this study (T.S.Eliot, Frederico Lorca, Abdul Wahab Al Bayati and Ahmad Abdul Mu'ti Hijazi ) belong to the second category. These four modernist poets have highlighted its negative psychological and mental impacts on the its dwellers and the ecosystem as a whole. The purpose of the study centers on highlighting the negative moral, psychological and emotional impacts the city leaves on creative writers, particularly poets. Indeed they always find a sharp contrast between their hunches and imaginings on the one hand and the depressing reality of the city's mode of living on the other. As regards the methodology used throughout the study, it foregrounds the thematic aspects of the poems selected with a particular reference to the representations of the city and its dull world. A close reading of these poems and the biographical information will be the guiding line. Some of the parallels and differences between the poets in question are included. The main findings and conclusions of the study can be summarized in the following points. The city is the center of civilization and emblem of national pride of all countries. However, it has many disadvantages such as the dwellers' keen sense of spiritual loss, alienation and displacement, especially among hypersensitive people like poets. Many sociologists, psychologists and philosophers have investigated this issue of the city's frustrating life. The poets' contribution to this topic can be considered as a fresh version that readers look forward to and are enthusiastic about.

Abstract:
The history of economics can be compared to a calm sea that once in a while happens to be shaken by heavy storms. This arises when works come out aimed at turning upside down the received interpretation of a great bygone economist's views. Professor Donald A. Walker's recent book, Walras's Market Models (1996), is likely to be among them. Its main thrust is that the view present-day economists have of Léon Walras is incorrect. The basic reason, he claims, is that to date all interpretations of Walras have been based on the last (posthumous) edition of the Eléments d' économie pure (henceforth the Elements), itself a slightly amended version of its fourth edition. To him this is a pity because Walras's most interesting theoretical ideas are to be found in its second and third editions—the embodiment of what he calls Walras's mature phase of theoretical activity—yet were abandoned by him when he revised his work for the fourth edition. The aim of Walker's book, then, is to bring to the fore the picture of what he considers to be the real Walras: an economist interested in the functioning of real-world markets and abiding by a realistic methodology who is attentive to the institutional set-up underlying his system of equations, and who is keen to provide his readers with disequilibrium models. In other words, Walker is trying to make the same claim apropos Walras as Axel Leijonhufvud (1968) did thirty years ago about Keynes when defending the view of a breach between the economics of Keynes and Keynesian economics. To Walker, modern Walrasian economics, or neo-Walrasian theory as it is more often called, is a betrayal of Walras's economics.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide “Comments” on two previous papers in this journal about fair value in Chinese accounting. It extends those papers by considering developments since 2006. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyses the contents of Chinese Accounting Standards, dividing the references to fair value into several different categories. This analysis is compared to the findings of the two previous papers. This paper then re-assesses the evidence about the alleged pressures from international institutions on Chinese accounting. Findings The two previous papers greatly overstate the importance of fair value in Chinese accounting, partly through misinterpreting Chinese standards and partly because of a lack of caveat that the instructions about fair value often relate to special circumstances or unusual companies. The theorising about Chinese enthusiasm for fair value is misguided: the present author suggests that China became keen to adopt international standards despite their use of fair value not because of it, and that China removed much of the fair value when it adapted international standards. The extension of the analysis beyond 2006 provides a fuller coverage but does not alter the conclusions. Research limitations/implications The earlier of the two papers examined has been extensively cited. Researchers need to be warned that the technical content and the conclusions of both papers are questionable. Authors should define terms clearly and should provide sufficient reference detail to enable readers to check findings. Practical implications Multinational companies, auditors and financial analysts should not be misled into thinking that Chinese accounting makes extensive use of fair value accounting. Originality/value This paper critically re-assesses two previous papers, starting with detailed technical data and moving through to the influence of international institutions. This paper also newly extends the analysis of Chinese standards beyond 2006.

The present day globalization in economy is closely connected with the development of air transport-one of the fastest growing sectors of economy, which provides long-distance transport, primarily to passengers. The mobility of population has increased and as a consequence the single transport space has been formed. After the crisis of 2015–2016 the economy of civil aviation is characterized by the rapid growth, increased passenger turnover, a high percentage of seat occupancy and the change in the structure of the air transportation market. The state of the air transportation market is characterized by globalization, deregulation, information and privatization. The services which air companies offer to the market are related to a high-tech product. At the same time, modern conditions require airlines to take measures to improve their performance, taking into account the internal and external factors affecting this business, as well as a set of incentive measures for workers in this industry. Thus, the article discusses the process of industry deregulation, gives several examples of market functioning models, highlights their main characteristics and shows options for making managerial decisions. Efficiency evaluation is a prerequisite condition for the implementation of airline development strategies. The principles of market economy required the restructuring of relations in distributive system and material incentive. In this regard, we summarize the experience of several labor remuneration decisions, as an integral part of airline management. The article gives an overview of the modern air transportation market characteristics, identifies the problems and prospects for its development. The relevance of the article is stipulated by the expanded presence of airlines in the world market and, as a consequence, by the necessity to investigate the up-to-date trends in market development, exposure the main factors that affect the competitiveness of air companies. The article is of interest for aviation experts as well as for readers who are keen on aircraft.

Drew, Ion, and Roar R. Pedersen. "Readers Theatre: A different approach to English for struggling readers." Acta Didactica Norge 4, no. 1 (September 22, 2010). http://dx.doi.org/10.5617/adno.1051.

Abstract:
This article presents a study of the use of Readers Theatre in English lessons with groups of academically-challenged pupils in a Norwegian lower secondary school. The study is based on the teacher’s logs, interviews with the teacher, a questionnaire answered by the pupils, and lesson observations. Readers Theatre, a group reading activity that can be used with a wide range of texts, was successfully incorporated into the curriculum with relatively small ‘fordypning’ (specialisation) groups in English. These pupils had opted for more English lessons instead of learning a second foreign language. Most of them struggled with English as their first foreign language and were struggling readers. However, the majority of the pupils experienced Readers Theatre as both enjoyable and educational. The experience had a positive effect on their confidence and motivation to read. It also helped to improve their reading fluency and accuracy, for example pronunciation, and facilitated growth in vocabulary. The experience of practising and performing as a group was especially satisfying and motivating for the pupils involved. The majority were keen to participate in other Readers Theatre projects.

Wyett, Jodi L. "Quixotic Legacy: The Female Quixote and the Professional Woman Writer." Authorship 4, no. 1 (June 17, 2015). http://dx.doi.org/10.21825/aj.v4i1.1108.

Abstract:
This essay argues that Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote or, The Adventures of Arabella (1752) served as a fulcrum in eighteenth-century literary history by providing a figuration of the female quixote for subsequent women novelists who were keen to court absorbed readers on the one hand while countering stereotypes about women's critical failings on the other. The figure of the female quixote proves to be a significant mark of literary professionalism by reifying the spectre of the professional writer’s need for absorbed readers and dramatizing the occasion by which the woman writer demonstrates her own authority, paradoxically allowing both woman novel reader and woman novel writer to lay claim to intellectual authority. Ultimately, the main character Arabella's fictional model potentially echoes more actual eighteenth-century women’s experiences than her adventures at first suggest: the female quixote emerges as less a social outcast or a freak than a figure for women’s commonality, especially their intellectual and ethical ambitions in a world inimical to their interests.

Abstract:
This study explores how New Zealand primary school students’ experiences of school libraries affected their attitudes towards reading for pleasure once they entered secondary school. Two hundred and seventy-six students in their first year at high school completed a survey asking about their primary school libraries. The students were asked to self-identify as keen readers, occasional readers or non-readers. The results were analysed in a spreadsheet, considering variables such as attitude to reading, former school and family background. The students were mainly positive about their libraries, but were bothered by cramped and noisy environments and books they perceived as babyish. Students from schools with a librarian were more positive about reading for fun than those from schools where the library was not prioritised. Students from a family background where reading was encouraged were more likely to maintain a positive attitude to reading by the time they reached high school.
