LEVIN, FELIKS. "Representation of the tales of the Ulster cycle in Foras Feasa ar Éirinn: organisation of discourse and contexts." Studia Hibernica: Volume 46, Issue 1 46, no. 1 (September 1, 2020): 1–25. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/sh.2020.1.

Abstract:
This article examines the patterns of history-writing in Geoffrey Keating’s retellings of the tales from the Ulster cycle in Foras Feasa ar Éirinn. The study illustrates how Keating’s familiarity with Irish medieval sources, his clerical education, which placed considerable emphasis on rhetoric, and his awareness of the English and continental traditions of history-writing, influenced the composition of the fragment of Foras Feasa ar Éirinn dedicated to the tales from the Ulster cycle. The author shows that in this fragment Keating tended to apply native narrative strategies more. As regards authorial intentions, Keating used the selected tales from the Ulster cycle as exempla of sin and its drastic consequences, which may explain his particular interest in the death tales.

Abstract:
The vibrational spectra and previous normal coordinate analyses of GaCl3 are reviewed. The valence force field (VFF), Keating force field (KFF) and central force field (CFF) are investigated, taking into account isotopic frequency shifts and the mass influence on Coriolis constants. It seems that KFF is an appropriate force field approximation. In its definition a new type of internal coordinates, the Keating's bending, is invoked. A final force Field is tentatively determined and used to calculate the mean amplitudes of vibration.

Abstract:
In this paper we prove asymptotic formulas for general moments of partial Euler products and the first and the second moments of partial Hadamard products related to central values of the family of L-functions associated to the symmetric square lifts of holomorphic modular forms for SL2(ℤ). Then using a hybrid Euler–Hadamard product formula for the central value, we relate these results with conjectures for general power moments of L-functions in this family and with Random Matrix Theory interpretations. This continues the work done previously by Gonek–Hughes–Keating and Bui–Keating for other families of L-functions.

Abstract:
This article deals with the development of enterprise bargaining in Australia and considers whether the goals set out in 1992 by the then Prime Minister, Paul Keating, have been realised. The article focuses in particular on the evolution of the no disadvantage test and the better off overall test, in terms of both the statutory provisions themselves and how they have been applied in practice. The article describes the decline of enterprise bargaining in recent years, from both a quantitative and a qualitative perspective, and the failure to achieve the goals set out by Mr Keating. The article concludes with a number of proposed legislative changes designed to revive enterprise bargaining in Australia.

Abstract:
The Keating Five case exemplifies a form of a political corruption that is increasingly common in contemporary politics but frequently neglected in contemporary political science. I focus on this form by developing a concept of mediated corruption, which links the acts of individual officials to effects on the democratic process. Unlike conventional corruption, mediated corruption does not require that the public official act with a corrupt motive or that either public officials or citizens receive improper benefits. The concept of mediated corruption provides not only a more coherent account of the case of the Keating Five but also a more fruitful way of reuniting the concepts of systematic corruption in traditional political theory with the concepts of individual corruption in contemporary social science.

Abstract:
Abstract This article engages contributions from Cricket Keating, Natasha Behl, Fred Lee and Jaby Mathew, and Brooke Ackerly’s introduction, in a symposium on The Humble Cosmopolitan. It first notes insights taken for the development of a democratic cosmopolitanism oriented to political humility from the work of Indian Dalit-rights champion and constitutional architect B.R. Ambedkar, and from interviews conducted with globally oriented Dalit activists. It then considers Mathew’s concerns about accommodation of the moral importance of local democratic practices, and Keating’s about the book’s emphasis on advancing institutional over attitudinal changes. It addresses issues Behl raises around attention to alternate conceptions of citizenship, e.g., ones which would center Dalit women’s voices; and Lee’s concerns about whether the model can recognize the importance of subaltern nationalisms. Responses focus on ways in which the model seeks to enable individuals to challenge political arrogance from a position of co-equal citizenship in regional and global institutions.

Abstract:
This article analyses the two policy moments of digital content industries policy development of the Keating (1992–96) and Howard (2001–04) governments. In bringing these two moments into dialogue, our aim is to illuminate and evaluate the broader policy frameworks, and the political and policy contexts, which gave rise to and subsequently shaped these different digital content strategies. The Keating government connected culture and services to harness multimedia as a vehicle for cultural expression and as a new economically viable growth industry suited to a convergent information age. The Howard government's innovation agenda has reconstructed industry development priorities for the digital content industries, influencing their conception as inputs and enablers for both the ICT and broader industries in an information economy framework. The article concludes with an evaluation of the assumptions and priorities, shortcomings and advantages of these two quite different approaches to developing digital content industries.

Abstract:
A semi-continuum approach is developed for mechanical analysis of a silicon nanowire, which captures the atomistic physics and retains the efficiency of continuum models. By using the Keating model, the strain energy of the nanowire required in the semi-continuum approach is obtained. Young’s modulus of the silicon (001) nanowire along [100] direction is obtained by the developed semi-continuum approach. Young’s modulus decreases dramatically as the size of a silicon nanowire width and thickness scaling down, especially at several nanometers, which is different from its bulk counterpart. The semi-continuum approach is extended to perform a mechanical analysis of the silicon nanowire at finite temperature. Taking into account the variations of the lattice parameter and the bond length with the temperature, the strain energy of the system is computed by using Keating anharmonic model. The dependence of young’s modulus of the nanowire on temperature is predicted, and it exhibits a negative temperature coefficient.

Abstract:
The name of Geoffrey Keating is familiar to generations of students of Irish language and literature. His prose works are fine examples of seventeenth-century Irish writing. He was credited by scholars of Irish with having saved from oblivion many stories of the Gaelic heroes of old in his magnum opus, the Foras Feasa ar Éirinn, a compendium of knowledge on the history of Ireland. Writing in the early part of the seventeenth century, when the native Irish system of learning and patronage of scholars was disintegrating, Keating synopsized many manuscript sources for the history of Ireland into a flowing text full of stories and curiosities. His writings were frequently transcribed and are preserved in countless manuscript copies.Kearing’s literary stature has meant that his tracts were more read for their language and style than studied for their content and it may appear curious at first sight to discover that this father figure of early Irish history and the preserver of the Irish language also wrote two theological tracts, on a continental Catholic Reformation model. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Kearing’s background. Although subsequently hailed as a champion of Gaelic Ireland, Keating was not a product of that society. In fact he was of Anglo-Norman (Old English) descent. He was ordained as a secular priest and was educated at two of the continental colleges set up to train Irishmen for the priesthood, Bordeaux and Rheims, where he came under English Jesuit influence. The precise dates of his sojourn on the continent are not known, but pre-date 1619. It is thought he was born about 1570 and died about 1644, spending most of his life as a priest working in Munster.
