"Influence of Orthophosphoric Acid Activation on the Quality of Activated Carbons." Materials Science Forum 1122 (May 21, 2024): 91–98. http://dx.doi.org/10.4028/p-kd7gn9.

Abstract:
Activated carbon (AC) is an adsorbent material used for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. Unfortunately, these materials used by the industry are very expensive. This is why research is being conducted to produce low-cost activated carbons from natural biomass. The objective of this work is to study the effect of activation by orthophosphoric acid on the quality of activated carbons. The different techniques used for the characterization are: the Iodine number and the Methylene Blue Index. For activated carbons prepared in a single activation step, iodine number of 609.12 and methylene blue value of 102.48 mg/g were obtained. For those prepared in two activation steps, iodine number of 951.75 mg/g and methylene blue value of 115.14 mg/g were obtained.

Adamson, David J. "Insanity, idiocy and responsibility : criminal defences in northern England and southern Scotland, 1660-1830." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14462.

Abstract:
This thesis compares criminal defences of insanity and idiocy between 1660 and 1830 in northern England and southern Scotland, regions which have been neglected by the historiographies of British crime and "insanity defences". It is explained how and why English and Scottish theoretical principles differed or converged. In practice, however, courtroom participants could obtain to alternative conceptions of accountability and mental distraction. Quantitative and qualitative analyses are employed to reveal contemporary conceptions of mental afflictions and criminal responsibility, which provide inverse reflections of "normal" behaviour, speech and appearance. It is argued that the judiciary did not dictate the evaluation of prisoners' mental capacities at the circuit courts, as some historians have contended. Legal processes were determined by subtle, yet complex, interactions between "decision-makers". Jurors could reach conclusions independent from judicial coercion. Before 1830, verdicts of insanity could represent discord between bench and jury, rather than the concord emphasised by some scholars. The activities of counsel, testifiers and prisoners also impinged upon the assessment of a prisoner's mental condition and restricted the bench's dominance. Despite important evidentiary evolutions, the courtroom authentication of insanity and idiocy was not dominated by Britain's evolving medical professions (including "psychiatrists") before 1830. Lay, communal understandings of mental afflictions and criminal responsibility continued to inform and underpin the assessment of a prisoner's mental condition. Such decisions were affected by social dynamics, such as the social and economic status, gender, age and legal experience of key courtroom participants. Verdicts of insanity and the development of Britain's legal practices could both be shaped by micro- and macro-political considerations. This thesis opens new avenues of research for British "insanity defences", whilst offering comparisons to contemporary Continental legal procedures.

IPCC (2018) pointed out that in order to achieve the goal of controlling the Paris Agreement of 1.50C, the global goal of carbon neutrality should be reached by 2050. The combination of 『Passive Design』Green Energy and Energy Management in a Net Zero-Energy Building has become one of the most important strategies for a global zero-carbon emission or decarbonization society. This study explores in depth the net cost of a net zero-energy building compared to the construction cost of a traditional construction method and the energy-saving and carbon-reducing benefits. Using the Net Present Value (NPV) method, the 5%, 8%, and 10% three discount rate levels were used for the situation assessment. The study found that under the building area of 300 m2, the RC second-level cost and ZEB were used. RC average price cost unit area spread of about 491 US dollars, carbon price needs to be higher than 200 US dollars / ton CO2e, NZEBs have economic benefits, become the main obstacle to popularize NZEBs. Based on the 60-year life cycle of Taiwan's RC buildings, the payback period criteria are evaluated accordingly. When the CER price is estimated at US$ 20, the recycling period of the RC structural building is 57 years and the recycling period of US$30 is 43 years. In the current carbon price of about 20 US dollars / ton CO2e, there is not enough incentive for the net zero energy building. In other words, in order to promote the construction of a low-carbon society and promote the development of a low-carbon society, we should consider incorporating relevant incentive policy tools, such as promoting the carbon footprint of building materials and strengthening green financing, etc., to create a green dividend for net zero-energy buildings (Green bonus), accelerating the development of net zero energy buildings.
