Abstract:
Karate-do is one of many budo, or martial ways, that originated during the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan. The original dojos (training halls), used the Japanese language to indoctrinate karate students into the moral code of the dojo community. Over the last century karate has spread across the world, and other languages have been combined with Japanese to teach the art and sport. In this article, the discursive practice of combining English and Japanese in Canadian dojos is called Karate-Talk. Using identity frameworks from linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, I illustrate and interpret how Karate-Talk teaches students the moral and ethical codes that are embedded in karate training, and in doing so helps students develop their black belt identity. Dojos want their students to develop black belt identities because it helps to pass on the traditions of karate-do and contributes to the preservation and continuation of the art form. This article describes Karate-Talk in a socio-historic context, and establishes the ways it is used to create black belt identities in karate students through the use of a case study.

After more than thirty years of teaching, Shintani created one of the largest karate organizations in North America with over 27,000 members. Shintani also invented Shindo, a martial art facilitating the use of an ancient weapon, the short stick, with modern techniques. For this article, many of Shintani’s senior students helped to reconstruct his life and explain his complex personality with recollections of their teacher. From the beginning of his karate training in an internment camp, to the eventual achievement of 9th-degree black belt, Masaru Shintani epitomized the modern karate master.</span></span></span></p>

Miyagi Chojun created the style and formally registered the name with the Japanese Government in 1933 (Hiagonna, 1985: 28). The late<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Yagi Meitoku was Miyagi Chojun’s most senior karate student. After Miyagi Chojun’s death, the Miyagi family chose Yagi Meitoku to carry on the style’s traditions. Yagi taught the system to his two sons. The oldest son, Meitatsu, carries on not only the style’s technical finesses and its philosophy, but also the stories that make up its history.</span></span></span></p>

Abstract:
Learning English is compulsory at the higher secondary level in the State of Kerala ever since its inception. As a practising higher secondary school teacher in English, the author is replenished with the first-hand experiences of the problems of learners in classroom while learning English. The various theories of language acquisition have taken into consideration the aspects of cognitive and affective factors, natural instinct, cultural influence, etc. Though English has been compulsorily taught right from the primary level, the standards attained when they reach the higher secondary level are not up to the expectations. The author has postulated the theory of KARATE after an experimental training in Karate. Based on the results derived from this study, the author investigated the benefits of T’ai Chi another martial art, on the psycho linguistic aspects of language teachers. The author established a positive link between this martial art and language teaching. The paper examines the present conditions of English education at higher secondary level within the author’s perspective of a teacher, trainer and curriculum developer. The paper presents a KaTa model of language learning and teaching based on the findings of both studies.

English is one of the world's official languages. All information is published in English and all progress and events can be known through English. Therefore, it is only natural that the sports world is also obliged to know English. Athletes will find it difficult to adapt if they don't master English. An athlete who is able to speak English so the development of his knowledge will progress more quickly. In Batam, there are a lot of kohai-kohai who don't speak English, so we tried to share a little of our knowledges to invite them how they can master English better and easily. To master English, an athlete needs language proficiency. Therefore we emphasized on our kohai-kohai so that they get used to using English in their daily life. Here we also emphasized on my kohai-kohai that they must be able to distinguish words, because in English words can affect meaning. Besides that, we also emphasized on the kohai-kohai how to pronounce the words, this is very important in mastering English. After that, how to apply those words in a sentence. The procedure for making sentences is no less important than the above. Sentences can also determine the meaning or topic to be conveyed to the interlocutors.

Vocabulary which comes from English which means vocabulary, for every language user, vocabulary matters a lot. If a language user does not master vocabulary then he or she cannot convey the meaning they want to convey. So that communication between them does not occur. The purpose of this service is to equip kohai-kohai karate in facing international activities. Such as Singapore open tournament, Malaysia tournament, India open tournament, Thailand open. Every international match faced by the kohai-kohai requires communication, the communication they use is English. Mastery of vocabulary is not limited to read, but kohai-kohai need to remember and apply between fellow language users. In addition, the aim of mastery is to provide kohai-kohai in conveying the meaning simply or completely. In this community service, it was found that kohai-kohai did not master vocabulary properly. Besides that, the kohai-kohai didn't apply the vocabulary in a day. These factors are caused by an environment that does not support the use of the language, then cultural factors, other factors are the emergence of shame, shame because of fear of being wrong, embarrassed because of fear of being ridiculed by friends, embarrassed because of insecurity.

The development of information technology, especially the internet, is certainly welcomed by all circles, one of which has even penetrated the world of organizations. Lemkari Kota Prabumulih is a sports organization located in Prabumulih City which is engaged in the sport of karate. The system applied in several lemkari karate training locations in Prabumulih is still done manually. If a payment transaction occurs, management records the payment into a manual written ledger and only recapitulates the records in Microsoft Office Excel. So that sometimes there are often errors in recording data, errors in recording data for those who have made payments because the participants are mostly small children, the time is reduced due to slow manual data recording so that it is not effective in training due to the slow service of trainers to participants who make payments. Therefore, it is necessary to have a website-based system for every administrative service in order to facilitate the process of good data management and data transparency for trainers, participants, and participants' parents. This website was created using the PHP (Personal Hypertext Preprocessor) programming language with MySQL Database storage and using UML (Unifield Modeling Language) as a design method.

Kihon or basic movements are what every karate-ka must learn in practice. This basic movement is a movement where a karateka can start other movements. The purpose of this research is to improve the performance of junior athletes. If the basic movements cannot be carried out properly and correctly, it will have an impact on other movements. If the message to be conveyed is not clear, the students cannot carry out the movement properly. Therefore, a coach must have knowledge in conveying language to his students. The method used in this exercise is the trainer demonstrating basic movements in accordance with basic of the karate standards. Therefore, the coach must be able to communicate with kohai properly and correctly. In addition to linguistics, the trainer must also provide examples of good movement as well. In this exercise the trainer still finds movements that are not adequate in practice, so they need to be corrected and practiced regularly.

Concerning the major issue as to how the diasporan group faces the assimilation, diaspora brings to mind several assumptions; it can be positive and negative to adapting one’s identity. Diaspora gets affected by some aspects of life such as culture, language, people, and place. The immigrants who moved or scattered from their home countries depend on how they can adapt to the new cultures, languages, and so on to new communities in the host countries that are different from theirs. This study aims to find out how the impact of diaspora perceived by analyzed the main characters during their process of diaspora. The approach of this study was descriptive qualitative research through the process of gathering the data qualitatively and reporting them descriptively. This study shows how the issue of diaspora relates to assimilation as the impact of the diaspora is reflected in Karate Kid film. The result of this study showed that the diasporan group integrates and possible to become a new type of human being as an immigrant in the new land. It represents assimilation in adoption values that exist in the host country.

Abstract:
Which different conceptions of the so-called “American Dream” are still alive or gaining ground in the increasingly polarized social climate of the United States during the Trump era? I intend to shed light on this question by analyzing the different types of success ethics presented in the highly popular Netflix series Cobra Kai (2018 - present). This will include an investigation into notions of merit and masculinity and how they are intertwined in the principal conflict between the two main characters: the blue-collar Johnny Lawrence and the affluent Daniel LaRusso – both of whom operate their own respective karate schools. I will embed this conflict within a theoretical framework undergirded by Michael Sandel’s observations on contemporary definitions of “meritocracy” and the associated “rhetoric of rising.” In addition, I will lean on George Lakoff’s linguistic concepts of the “strict vs nurturant parent,” and Lauren Berlant’s notion of “cruel optimism.” In doing so, I hope to illuminate the deep-seated workings of competing philosophies on what “it takes to get ahead” in today’s United States. One of my main findings is that Lawrence’s brand of hard-bodied, Reagan-era masculinity is mutually reinforced with LaRusso’s incremental and cosmopolitan approach, thereby perpetuating polarization and antagonism. The fact that both karate teachers are keen to impart their vision on a younger generation is also indicative of how this enmity represents a battle for the “soul of America.” Given ongoing trends toward increasing social, economic, and cultural divides within the U.S., it is of great importance to examine how these developments are negotiated in popular culture. Cobra Kai offers fertile ground for addressing this question.

Extracurricular activities in elementary school are an additional program or activity to the mandatory learning process that students must have to develop talent skills and also shape students' character. Researchers use qualitative research methods. The subjects in this study were students at the Annur Islamic Integrated Elementary School, the population in this study was taken from grades three and four, totaling 36 students. From the results of interviews and data analysis, information was obtained that extracurricular activities are activities carried out outside of class hours or outside school hours. These activities are carried out to help develop students according to their needs, talents, interests and potential. Extracurricular activities whose interests depend on the elementary school, for example drawing, coloring, karate, Scouting, painting, and also for example in integrated Islamic schools such as Tahfidz, Arabic language, English language, art, and so on. in face-to-face or face-to-face interviews and documentation which can then be analyzed and concluded. The results of this research are that of the many extracurricular activities that students are most interested in, namely extracurricular tahfidz.

Starting from Pérez and Gutiérrez’s previous bibliography (2008), the total number of published monographs following the criteria of subject, decade and the combination of both was analyzed. The results showed a total of 2.036 books (1.285 original editions) with a prevalence of Japanese and Chinese martial arts. A group of eight subjects exceeded a hundred volumes (karate, judo/jujutsu, taijiquan, wu-shu/kung fu, classics, qigong, philosophy, history and education, and aikido), with two patterns of bibliographic evolution appearing. The first, represented by Japanese martial arts considered as a group and martial arts focused on the utilitarian and/or sporting performance aspects (judo/jujutsu, karate and wu-shu/kung fu), developed increasingly until the 80’s when it followed a steady-state and/or drop. The second model, which characterises the Chinese martial arts group and martial arts mainly focused on healthy and/or spiritual aspects of training (taijiquan, qigong, aikido), has increased significantly from the 90’s until the present moment. The interpretation of these patterns and the evolution of the martial arts bibliographic production in Spain highlights some aspects such as the development of the Spanish society and sports practice, bibliographic production, reading habits, or the cultural influences of eastern countries on Spain.</span></span></span></p>

The main theme for these exhibitions was Asian martial arts with a focus on those from Japan, including presentations by notable masters in aikido, karate, judo, kyudo, iaido, kenjutsu, jodo, juttejutsu, kusarigamajutsu, naginatajutsu, tameshigiri, and kendo. On exhibit were artifacts from Morges Castle museum collections as well as numerous ancient objects borrowed specifically for these exhibitions from other Swiss museums and private collections. There was also a lecture on Japanese sword collecting and care, and presentations of Japanese dance, flower arranging (ikebana), the art of tea (châ no yu, châdo), paper folding (origami), traditional kimono dress, and detailed demonstrations on the manufacture of bladed weapons. Text and photography were arranged to record these events for this article, showing how excellent organization and cooperation can introduce high-quality martial traditions to the public.</span></span></span></p>

Yet, the continuity of modern Goju-ryu with respect to its katas (forms) and these historical sources has never been established. Therefore, we employed a statistical technique to examine the relationship between the classical katas of modern Goju-ryu. It was reasoned that there would be continuity across all katas of modern Goju-ryu if they indeed came from a similar source. The Karaite language has justifiedly attracted the attention of Turkologists though it should also be of interest to students of Jewish languages (= the languages of Rabbanite and Karaite Jews); and what students of Jewish languages have to say about it should interest Turkologists, just as what the latter have to say should interest the former. By looking at Karaite (as exemplified in Michał Németh’s Unknown Lutsk Karaim Letters in Hebrew Script (19th–20th Centuries): A Critical Edition)from the viewpoint of other Jewish languages, researchers can: Add new questions to the agenda of Karaite research. For example, the existence of an idiosyncratic type of periphrastic verb in at least Karaite, Judezmo, Yidish, and Ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazic English prompts the question of what the genetic relationships between the tokens of that type are. Reopens old questions. For example, the derivation proposed for Karaite כניסא '[Karaite (and/or Rabbanite?)] synagog', with phonological variants, according to which the word comes from Arabic. The author proposes a different etymology (possibly not original with him) , involving only Jewish languages (a more appropriate derivation for a Karaite word having that meaning), which takes the Karaite word back to Hebrew and/or to Jewish Aramaic.

The article separates the ideas and concepts of the body and physicality. The statements about the physicality of V. Podorogi and Ya. Chesnov are quoted as interesting, but requiring reflection. Comparison of ideas about love in different cultures allows us to formulate a hypothesis about physicality. The basis for breeding and understanding the phenomena of the body and physicality, according to the author, are the practices of physicality. The author characterizes the practices of corporeality, which allowed the culture to form such prerequisites of the body as "flesh", "kind-form", "corpse", "bone", "belly". To analyze the formation of the concept of the body, the author takes two cases &#8210; the history of the creation by Praxiteles of the sculpture of naked Aphrodite and the formation of the canon of ballet dance by Louis XIV, the Sun King. At the same time, he shows that in the process of becoming corporeality, one can distinguish, firstly, the crystallization of a new anthropological image of reality (for example, the feeling of being a god or a hero), and secondly, the alignment of other mental structures under this image of corporeality (the formation of bodies of love, dancer, musician, karate, etc.), inthirdly, the unfolding of a new practice of corporeality, and fourthly, the awareness of new formations of corporeality and their consolidation in the language. Building a new physicality, on the one hand, involves the invention of schemes and other narratives (metaphors, symbols, stories), which entails the formation of a new reality, on the other hand, the restructuring of feelings under the influence of a change in reality. The complexity of understanding corporeality, according to the author, is partly explained by the inclusion of the way of grasping corporeality in thought in the process of becoming bodies.

This article deals with Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s work on the folklore of the Polish-Lithuanian Karaites before the First World War. Ananiasz Zajączkowski authored several articles in which he edited and/or described manuscripts in the Karaite language. These manuscripts, which included works on fortune-telling, magic and herbalism, originated in late 19th-century Lithuania. The article describes the genesis of works on Karaite folklore and challenges Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s thesis regarding the origins of the Turkic peoples. It quotes a number of Hebrew manuscripts kept in Karaite collections and proves that most of the works have been translated into the Karaite language.

The article discusses the native words from the dictionary of V. Radlov «The experience of the dictionary of Turkic adverbs». In the course of the study, the general vocabulary of Kazakh words and Turkic languages was identified, a comparative analysis was carried out. The use of these words in the modern Kazakh literary language was determined, semantic differences were demonstrated. V. Radlov’s dictionary includes as much as possible the Turkic languages and dialects of that period. In particular, there is a large vocabulary of Kazakh, Turkish, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Bashkir, Yakut, Altai, Karaite, Chulym, Shor, Uighur, Khakass, Tatar languages. The author systematically pointed out the phonetic, semantic differences of the same word in different Turkic languages in the register.The use of words of the Kazakh language of that period is presented in the article on specific examples and compared with the modern Kazakh language. Based on Radlov’s dictionary, it is analyzed that a number of lexical units have undergone semantic changes during the dynamic development of the language. It is well known that lexicographic parameters contained in any dictionary are the main indicator of the quality of this dictionary. V. Radlov’s dictionary systematically and clearly presents phonetic, grammatical, semantic parameters. This feature allows to get deep information from the structure of the Turkic languages. The author proposed not only individual words, but also phrases and phraseological units. This contributes to the correct definition of the history of the language and the etymology of words.

This study aims to reconstruct the self-perception of the Karaite community in Vilnius during 1913–1939. The research is based on a review of two Karaite periodicals, Караимскоеcлово(Karaite Word), published in Russian from 1913–1914, and Myśl Karaimska (Karaite Thought), published in Polish from 1924–1939. Both periodicals served to develop national selfawareness and a spiritual revival of the whole Karaite nation by covering history, politics and literature. In Karaimskoye Slovo, Karaites identified themselves as Israelites; in Myśl Karaimska, some high-level representatives openly emphasized their Turkic origins. State and institutional discrimination against the Jewish population had become a major issue over the years, creating a volatile platform for change while breaking with the eternal sense of Karaite identity as people of Israel. This paper contributes to the literature on the history of the Karaite community in Vilnius in the early decades of the twentieth century.

In this paper we describe the verbs of falling in Karata, an Andic (<East Caucasian) language. Our research is based on the dialect of Karata which is spoken in the village of Karata (Akhvakhsky district, Dagestan, Russia). The semantic field of falling includes eight verbs. The verb t’araɬa ‘to fall down’ is the dominant one. It can be used in the majority of situations of falling. The remaining seven verbs are more specialized. They are used in the situations of falling which have special features. The verb karaɬa ‘to topple over’ describes the situation of falling from a vertical position. Some of the verbs can only be combined with special subjects of falling (e.g. only with humans). t’oraɬa ‘to drip’ and ͡tʃʷaχːaɬa ‘to fl ow’ describe the falling of water. The first verbal root, t’oraɬa ‘to drip’, describes the falling of small portions of water (e.g. of water drops). Furthermore, the root of this verb may be (partially) reduplicated: in Karata, (partial) reduplication has the semantics of so-called verbal plurality. The meaning of tʼor~t’-aɬa ‘drip~VPL-INF’ presupposes that there was a number of drips, not only one drip. The second verbal root for the falling of water, ͡tʃʷaχːaɬa ‘to fl ow’, describes the falling of water as a substance (i.e. as a mass noun). tort͡ʃʼːaɬa ‘to crash’ is special in that it implies that the falling occurred with a loud sound. It covers many falling situations, including falling from upside down and falling from vertical position. The verb χːeraɬa ‘to pour’ is used with friable substances (e.g. sand). baχːaɬa ‘to collapse’ describes falling with destruction of the subject of falling. Finally, giraɬa ‘to lay down’ specializes in falling of human subjects from a vertical position. Overall, there are two parameters are crucial for the system of verbs of falling in Karata: (i) a kind of the subject of falling (human vs. non-human, mass noun vs. countable noun) and (ii) a kind of the situation of falling (e.g. falling from a vertical position or falling with destruction of the subject of falling)

Abstract Sefer ha-Maslul (“Book of the Path”) is a Hebrew grammar book in the Samaritan tradition. The book, known in Arabic as Kitāb al-Tawṭiya (“Book of Introduction”), was composed in that language during the first half of the twelfth century and is the earliest and only known surviving Samaritan grammatical work. It was first published by Zeʾev Ben-Haim in his monumental book, The Literary and Oral Tradition of Hebrew and Aramaic amongst the Samaritans. Grammatical terminology is key to understanding the theory of a grammarian. One can obtain such understanding by tracking a term throughout a work, examining how it is used and whether its usage is consistent. The term ʿiwaḍ (“compensation”) is a central one in Sefer ha-Maslul. In this article I will examine the outlook of its author, the grammarian Abū Isḥāq b. Mārūṯ, as well as the term ʿiwaḍ and its usages. Sefer ha-Maslul was written following the emergence of scientific grammar among Rabbinic, Arab, and Karaite grammarians. Accordingly, I will compare its author’s approach with those of Judah ben David Ḥayyūǧ (a Rabbanite), Ibn Ǧinnī (a Muslim) and Abū l-Farāǧ Hārūn (a Karaite).

Abstract The purpose of the present paper is to show that the prominent grammarian Abū al-Faraj Hārūn (AFH), head of the Karaite Majlis in Jerusalem (first half of the eleventh century CE) was acquainted with the grammatical theory of the important Andalusian grammarian Yehudah Ḥayyūj (d. c. 1010 CE in Cordoba), whose writings had reached the Arabic-speaking east at an early stage, not long after his death. AFH described the grammar of Biblical Hebrew according to the accepted Karaite method and the classical Arabic grammatical theory, but also mentioned Ḥayyūj explicitly by name, and mentioned the latter’s grammatical method in explanations of words in the Bible. In his al-Muštamil, especially in the chapters on the letters, AFH provided explanations using Ḥayyūj’s method; he did not copy Ḥayyūj’s words but described phonological and morphological phenomena in his own words, based on Ḥayyūj’s theory. In other words, we will show that AFH was the first in the Arabic-speaking east to have used Ḥayyūj’s grammatical terminology and concepts, examples and explanations.

We introduce KaraMIR, a musical project dedicated to karaoke song analysis. Within KaraMIR, we define Kara1k, a dataset composed of 1000 cover songs provided by Recisio Karafun application, and the corresponding 1000 songs by the original artists. Kara1k is mainly dedicated toward cover song identification and singing voice analysis. For both tasks, Kara1k offers novel approaches, as each cover song is a studio-recorded song with the same arrangement as the original recording, but with different singers and musicians. Essentia, harmony-analyser, Marsyas, Vamp plugins and YAAFE have been used to extract audio features for each track in Kara1k. We provide metadata such as the title, genre, original artist, year, International Standard Recording Code and the ground truths for the singer’s gender, backing vocals, duets, and lyrics’ language. KaraMIR project focuses on defining new problems and describing features and tools to solve them. We thus provide a comparison of traditional and new features for a cover song identification task using statistical methods, as well as the dynamic time warping method on chroma, MFCC, chords, keys, and chord distance features. A supporting experiment on the singer gender classification task is also proposed. The KaraMIR project website facilitates the continuous research.

Summary. The purpose of the study is to analyze the history of the emergence and development of the phenomenon in the culture of the Karaites of Eastern Europe, which can be described as neo-paganism. Research methodology is based on the scientific and special-historical methods and the growth of the historical analysis. The article is based on the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity and problem-chronological approach. The scholar novelty of the article is in the fact that for the first time an attempt has been made to comprehensively study the phenomenon of neo-paganism of the Crimean Karaites in its development, from its origin to the present state. In the same way, for the first time it attempts to single out all the elements on which the neo-pagan discourse of the Crimean Karaites is based, to determine the time and circumstance of the appearance or the first mention of each of them. Conclusions. It was found that the search for or invention of pagan traditions in the culture of the Crimean Karaites was an irreversible and logical consequence of the campaign to absolutize the importance of Turkish heritage and popularize the idea of exclusively Turkish origin of the Crimean Karaites, conducted by Karaite leader S. Shapshal in the 1930s among the Karaites of the Second Polish Republic. The source of inspiration for authors who have been looking for traces of paganism in the culture of the Karaites of Eastern Europe could be materials published in the interwar Karaite press, including the Polish-language magazine "Myśl Karaimska" published in Vilno (contemporary Vilnius), and on the editorial policy of which S. Shapshal had a great influence. However, as can be seen, Shapshal is not always personally responsible for the interpretation of various elements of Karaite culture as pagan and for the emergence of new pseudo-pagan elements. It has also been shown that not all elements of Karaite culture used as evidence of the paganism of their ancestors are late inventions or borrowings, but may be traces of the cultural diffusion of Karaites and Turkish peoples during the long existence of Karaites in the Turkish environment.

Communicating data has become vital in an increasingly data-dependent society. Because data are often communicated graphically, many colleges and universities are offering courses that teach the principles of data visualisation. In this article, the author reflects on his experience of teaching such a course at a liberal arts college. The course introduced students to the tidyverse suite of packages for the programming language R, including the data visualisation package ggplot2, which implements Wilkinson’s (2005) ‘grammar of graphics’. The packages sf and tmap were used to extend the capabilities of the tidyverse packages for analysing geospatial data and producing thematic maps. This article provides insights into effective teaching strategies, including intended learning outcomes, the core syllabus, pedagogy and assessment. Sample tasks and visualisations are also presented to demonstrate how essential cartographic skills were imparted to students.

This flexible dimension is discernible also in overall literalistic approach of medieval Karaite translators of the Hebrew Bible into Arabic. Mit einem Grenzverhau sicherte man im frühen Mittelalter den Zugang zu einem Stammesgebiet. Zu diesem Zweck hackte man die Äste und Baumspitzen in zwei Meter Höhe ab und schuf so ein undurchdringliches Hindernis. Sein Durchgang war leicht zu kontrollieren und zu verteidigen. Die darauf bezugnehmenden Wörter urslaw. *osěkъ und *osěčь sind von urslaw. *osěkati ՙvon den Bäumen die Äste abhauen, die Bäume stutzen, behauen՚ abgeleitet. In dem Beitrag werden alle betreffenden Ortsnamen des altsorbischen Sprachgebietes zusammengestellt, historisch dokumentiert sowie die Lage bei einem Stammesgebiet oder bei einer alten Verkehrsverbindung beschrieben.
