Abstract:
Karate-do is one of many budo, or martial ways, that originated during the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan. The original dojos (training halls), used the Japanese language to indoctrinate karate students into the moral code of the dojo community. Over the last century karate has spread across the world, and other languages have been combined with Japanese to teach the art and sport. In this article, the discursive practice of combining English and Japanese in Canadian dojos is called Karate-Talk. Using identity frameworks from linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, I illustrate and interpret how Karate-Talk teaches students the moral and ethical codes that are embedded in karate training, and in doing so helps students develop their black belt identity. Dojos want their students to develop black belt identities because it helps to pass on the traditions of karate-do and contributes to the preservation and continuation of the art form. This article describes Karate-Talk in a socio-historic context, and establishes the ways it is used to create black belt identities in karate students through the use of a case study.

Abstract:
Learning English is compulsory at the higher secondary level in the State of Kerala ever since its inception. As a practising higher secondary school teacher in English, the author is replenished with the first-hand experiences of the problems of learners in classroom while learning English. The various theories of language acquisition have taken into consideration the aspects of cognitive and affective factors, natural instinct, cultural influence, etc. Though English has been compulsorily taught right from the primary level, the standards attained when they reach the higher secondary level are not up to the expectations. The author has postulated the theory of KARATE after an experimental training in Karate. Based on the results derived from this study, the author investigated the benefits of T’ai Chi another martial art, on the psycho linguistic aspects of language teachers. The author established a positive link between this martial art and language teaching. The paper examines the present conditions of English education at higher secondary level within the author’s perspective of a teacher, trainer and curriculum developer. The paper presents a KaTa model of language learning and teaching based on the findings of both studies.

English is one of the world's official languages. All information is published in English and all progress and events can be known through English. Therefore, it is only natural that the sports world is also obliged to know English. Athletes will find it difficult to adapt if they don't master English. An athlete who is able to speak English so the development of his knowledge will progress more quickly. In Batam, there are a lot of kohai-kohai who don't speak English, so we tried to share a little of our knowledges to invite them how they can master English better and easily. To master English, an athlete needs language proficiency. Therefore we emphasized on our kohai-kohai so that they get used to using English in their daily life. Here we also emphasized on my kohai-kohai that they must be able to distinguish words, because in English words can affect meaning. Besides that, we also emphasized on the kohai-kohai how to pronounce the words, this is very important in mastering English. After that, how to apply those words in a sentence. The procedure for making sentences is no less important than the above. Sentences can also determine the meaning or topic to be conveyed to the interlocutors.

Vocabulary which comes from English which means vocabulary, for every language user, vocabulary matters a lot. If a language user does not master vocabulary then he or she cannot convey the meaning they want to convey. So that communication between them does not occur. The purpose of this service is to equip kohai-kohai karate in facing international activities. Such as Singapore open tournament, Malaysia tournament, India open tournament, Thailand open. Every international match faced by the kohai-kohai requires communication, the communication they use is English. Mastery of vocabulary is not limited to read, but kohai-kohai need to remember and apply between fellow language users. In addition, the aim of mastery is to provide kohai-kohai in conveying the meaning simply or completely. In this community service, it was found that kohai-kohai did not master vocabulary properly. Besides that, the kohai-kohai didn't apply the vocabulary in a day. These factors are caused by an environment that does not support the use of the language, then cultural factors, other factors are the emergence of shame, shame because of fear of being wrong, embarrassed because of fear of being ridiculed by friends, embarrassed because of insecurity.

Abstract:
The development of information technology, especially the internet, is certainly welcomed by all circles, one of which has even penetrated the world of organizations. Lemkari Kota Prabumulih is a sports organization located in Prabumulih City which is engaged in the sport of karate. The system applied in several lemkari karate training locations in Prabumulih is still done manually. If a payment transaction occurs, management records the payment into a manual written ledger and only recapitulates the records in Microsoft Office Excel. So that sometimes there are often errors in recording data, errors in recording data for those who have made payments because the participants are mostly small children, the time is reduced due to slow manual data recording so that it is not effective in training due to the slow service of trainers to participants who make payments. Therefore, it is necessary to have a website-based system for every administrative service in order to facilitate the process of good data management and data transparency for trainers, participants, and participants' parents. This website was created using the PHP (Personal Hypertext Preprocessor) programming language with MySQL Database storage and using UML (Unifield Modeling Language) as a design method.

Abstract:
Kihon or basic movements are what every karate-ka must learn in practice. This basic movement is a movement where a karateka can start other movements. The purpose of this research is to improve the performance of junior athletes. If the basic movements cannot be carried out properly and correctly, it will have an impact on other movements. If the message to be conveyed is not clear, the students cannot carry out the movement properly. Therefore, a coach must have knowledge in conveying language to his students. The method used in this exercise is the trainer demonstrating basic movements in accordance with basic of the karate standards. Therefore, the coach must be able to communicate with kohai properly and correctly. In addition to linguistics, the trainer must also provide examples of good movement as well. In this exercise the trainer still finds movements that are not adequate in practice, so they need to be corrected and practiced regularly.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different competitive disciplines in karate (sports fight - kumite and forms - kata) on morpho-functional characteristics in senior karate athletes. In addition, differences in relation to training experience, as well as the acute physiological response to a specific physical exertion during the simulated competition were determined. The sample included 72 athletes primarily divided into kata (n = 33) and kumite (n = 39) group, and to training experience into three groups (oldest: n = 23, medium: n = 24, and youngest: n = 25). All subjects were evaluated through a battery of 36 morpho-functional tests. Differences were found between two competitive disciplines. Kumite athletes had significantly longer dimensions (p < 0.01), whereas kata competitors had more pronounced subcutaneous adipose tissue accompanied by higher bone mass and superior flexibility (p < 0.05). Furthermore, kumite athletes had better indicators of absolute power in jumping performance and aerobic capacity (p < 0.01). Differences also occurred in all variables of vertical jumping assessment (jump height and maximum power), functional indicators (p < 0.05) and muscle strength evaluation (p < 0.01) in relation to training experience. All differences found were in favor of the oldest group. No differences were found in physiological responses to acute load of the specific competitive discipline, or in body core temperature measured. The results of thisresearch indicate that training for different karate disciplines had led to certain specific morpho-functional changes in the body. These changes were partially affected by specific training regimes and training experience.

Abstract:
Humans are asymmetric by nature. Asymmetry occurs for the reason that twocorresponding part of the body that are located on each side of the body’s central axis are not identical to each other. These differences can be seen in the means of size and appearance, as well as in various functions during motoric actions. In regards toprofessional and recreational sports, as well as rehabilitation, training efforts are directed to make one side of the body or limb identical to other side or limb, in means of shape, size and function. Thus, with training we strive not only to balance, but also to improve each side of the body, in order to act and function as a matched system. There are number of specific features established with isokinetic chair based on various testing of different athletes. These specificities are related to particular sports disciplines followed by numerous typical imbalances between antagonistic muscle groups, often with bilateral difference. The data obtained on the isokinetic chair are extremely important for every athlete and coach because they enable precise training planning. The effectiveness of training both significantly increase the targeted work, and also prevents a large number of injuries, which are the greatest danger today's sport. The main objective of this research was to determine whether there is a dynamic asymmetry for judo and karate athletes of different age. The sample of participants consisted of 120 judo and karate athletes of both gender. Participants belong to groups of cadets, juniors and seniors. Eleven variables for evaluation of morphological (anthropometric) were applied. For assessing the maximummuscle force flexor and extensor of the knee joint as well as the maximum force ofinternal and external rotation of the shoulder joint isokinetic parameters was used. Toanalyze the differences between the age, sport and gender by groups, we used univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA).The research results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the asymmetry between all groups for judo and karate athletes. However, there was asignificant difference in the expression of maximum force of quadriceps and thehamstrings, as well as the maximum force for external and internal rotation of theshoulder joint. These differences were all in favor of judo group for all age categories and gender. Yet, there were no statistically significant differences found between themorphological characteristics of the left and right side of the body among all groups.Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that judo and karate can be classified as sports that do not lead to the appearance of morphological nor dynamic asymmetry of its practitioners (athletes).

Woldu, Demelash. "Exploring language uses and policy processes in Karat Town of Konso Woreda, Ethiopia." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2018. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/68284/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores language uses and the implementation of language policy processes in a Konso ethnolinguistic community in Ethiopia. Federal education policy recognises the right of every ethnic group to use their language in primary education. However, this policy has been inconsistently implemented, and many minority languages are devalued in the teaching-learning process. Specifically, the study investigates the language uses of a Konso Karat community and the students and teachers in their school, the practices and planning of language-in-education policy in this community and the relationship between language and ethnic identity. I carried out six months ethnographic fieldwork in Karat town and interviewed officials at the Federal, Regional and Zonal levels of education system. This enabled me to explore language-ineducation policy decisions on and practices of language uses in primary education and critically interrogate language policy implementation and planning in Konso ‘Woreda’/District. The study revealed that in Karat town individuals and families predominantly used Amharic or Affa Konso or both due to their different attitudes and values attached to these languages in and outside Konso Woreda. However, in this Orthodox religion, Amharic was dominantly used in the religious preaching and ceremonies. Regarding views on identity and language, findings revealed that ethnic identity and its relationship with language were largely essentialised due to a belief embedded in the Konso socio-cultural system and Ethiopian ethnolinguistic ideology. The study also showed that the primary school official policy ignored Affa Konso and its speakers and prioritized Amharic as the language of opportunity and power. However, there were some Affa Konso speaking teachers and students who valued the minority language and translated the official policy in their own ways. This experience in the teaching-learning process - along with a view that promotion of mother tongue education could enhance students’learning - led to a Konso local language policy initiative. This policy aimed to promote Affa Konso for official uses including education but this decision was made by officials on behalf of the community.

With this study, I have the main objective to present the language policy vitality built by Karajá students of the course of Specialization in Intercultural Education and Transdisciplinary: pedagogical management, Federal University of Goiás, which make up the pedagogical political projects of the schools of Hawalò, Itxala and Btoiry. In it I discuss, first, the historical and social context of the Karajá people, in order to understand the complex universe, plural and specific experienced by these people in Brazil. The second chapter of this study has the objective to discourse about public policies on Indigenous Education in Brazil, from the Indian Protection Service, founded in 1910, until term of the 1988 Federal Constitution. In the third chapter, we discuss the concepts of interculturalism and transdisciplinary in the process for specific differentiated indigenous education in order to understand how teachers and indigenous students experience these principles in the course of specialization, taking prospects to bring possibilities to recognize and appreciate other cultural and educational systems that will beyond the cultural hierarchy, language and education in the construction of educational policy projects of their schools. And finally, in the fourth chapter, we present the sociolinguistics situation of the mentioned villages, detailing the language uses realities of the Karajá people in their social spheres of linguistic and cultural production in these communities. It is important noting that the sociolinguistic study is authored by Karajá teachers and is the basis of creation of language policies that make up the pedagogical political projects of schools in question. For the presentation and study of these language policies, I support this research in Toral (1992), Pimentel da Silva (2001a, 2004), Walsh (2009), the pedagogical political projects the schools of the villages of Hawalò, Itxala and Btoiry (2014) and interviews with students graduating teachers of the specialization course. I intend, with this work, collaborate with research on language policies vitality of indigenous Brazilian languages, but also and especially with the training of teachers Karajá, providing them grants for study and reflection of contextualized methodologies and intercultural bilingual education to consider the uses and functions of their languages and other, such as the Portuguese language, both inside and outside the school in the process of oral communication and writing.

This is a pioneering study of the Karajá indigenous community of Bdeburè village. This community was formed in 2001 by indigenous people who migrated from the former and now extinct Tytema village, which was located on Bananal Island, Mato Grosso state, to another territory that is very close to the city of Aruanã, in the state of Goiás. Other indigenous people who lived in Buridina were also joined, another Karajá village is also near the city of Aruanã (GO). This paper aims to describe the sociolinguistic reality of the Bdeburè community, as well as to investigate the feelings and linguistic attitudes of its members. It is known that linguistic attitudes have a great influence on the process of linguistic change in a diglossia environment, so it is our intention to observe how this environment and the Portuguese language are interfering in the linguistic attitudes of adults, but especially of children, who guarantee the future vitality of the minority language in the community. To that end, we will rely on authors who reflect on situations of linguistic conflict, diglossic environment and vitality of minority languages, such as the authors Grosjean (1982), Hamel (1984, 1988, 1993, 2003), Pimentel da Silva (2009; 2015), Meliá (1988) and Maturana (2002). As this work presupposes a research that involves feelings and attitudes, we chose as main research methodology the transmetology (MALDONADO, 2008), which allows the sum of diversified research methods that best fit the objectives of the study. Among the several methods that participated in the construction of the methodology, we highlight the ethnography (GEERTZ, 2015) and the interviews of a deep and participatory nature (HAMEL, 1988; MOREIRA and CALEFFE, 2008). Although not definitive, the results point to positive attitudes on the part of the Bdeburè natives, both adults and children, which favors linguistic vitality. However, the hostile and diglossic environment that the non-indigenous community represents puts at risk the continuity of positive attitudes, especially regarding children who are subject to a monolingual non-indigenous education in Portuguese. For this reason, this work also strives to demonstrate the great importance of bilingual intercultural education for the maintenance of positive linguistic attitudes that contribute directly to the linguistic vitality of the Karajá language in Bdeburè.

"Literacy Practices in and out of School in Karagwe : The case of primary school literacy education in rural Tanzania." Doctoral thesis, Stockholm University, Centre for Research on Bilingualism, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-236.

Abstract:

This study has investigated the question of relation between literacy practices in and out of school in rural Tanzania. By using the perspective of linguistic anthropology, literacy practices in five villages in Karagwe district in the northwest of Tanzania have been analysed. The outcome may be used as a basis for educational planning and literacy programs.

The analysis has revealed an intimate relation between language, literacy and power. In Karagwe, traditional élites have drawn on literacy to construct and reconstruct their authority, while new élites, such as individual women and some young people have been able to use literacy as one tool to get access to power. The study has also revealed a high level of bilingualism and a high emphasis on education in the area, which prove a potential for future education in the area. At the same time discontinuity in language use, mainly caused by stigmatisation of what is perceived as local and traditional, such as the mother-tongue of the majority of the children, and the high status accrued to all that is perceived as Western, has turned out to constitute a great obstacle for pupils’ learning.

The use of ethnographic perspectives has enabled comparisons between interactional patterns in schools and outside school. This has revealed communicative patterns in school that hinder pupils’ learning, while the same patterns in other discourses reinforce learning. By using ethnography, relations between explicit and implicit language ideologies and their impact in educational contexts may be revealed. This knowledge may then be used to make educational plans and literacy programmes more relevant and efficient, not only in poor post-colonial settings such as Tanzania, but also elsewhere, such as in Western settings.

Abstract:
In the 10th and 11th centuries CE many Karaite scribes in the Middle East used Arabic script to write not only the Arabic language, but also the Hebrew language. Such Hebrew texts in Arabic transcription were predominantly Hebrew Bible texts. The transcriptions reflect the oral reading tradition of the biblical text. Most manuscripts reflect the Tiberian reading tradition. Some reflect an imperfect performance of the Tiberian reading tradition. This imperfect performance may be attributed to the impact of the phonological system of the vernacular language of the scribes. In this paper I discuss aspects of imperfect performance discernible in the distribution of Hebrew vocalisation signs that are used in the manuscripts. The paper focuses in particular on (a) deviations in the distribution of vowel signs that reflect imperfect performance of Tiberian vowel qualities and (b) deviations in the distribution of shewa and ḥaṭef signs that reflect imperfect performance of Tiberian syllable structure.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Karaite languages and literatures. Over the years, Karaites have demonstrated a special affinity with the Hebrew language, making its knowledge a principle of faith. This is because they believed that their practice of Judaism was embedded in the biblical text and that, with the correct tools, it could be discovered therein, even in the absence of explicit statements. As a result, many Karaites, influenced by Muslim linguistic studies, turned to Hebrew grammar to help them understand the Bible better, even before Rabbanites expressed an interest in the subject. Karaite grammatical works are thus important for understanding the history of Jewish study of Hebrew. Karaite Hebrew creativity included the composition of poetry, usually not for its own sake but for didactic or liturgical purposes. Some of these poems have been incorporated into the Karaite prayer book. In addition, Hebrew rhymed prose at the beginning and end of Karaite compositions became standard.

Abstract:
The article focuses on a close study of the comedy “Akhyr Zeman” by Aaron Levy. It was written at the close of nineteenth century and published in 1911. “Akhyr Zeman” is a peculiar cultural hybrid that combines in itself some elements of traditional and modern cultures. As a play, it introduced a brand new genre to Karaite culture. The plot treated the traditional arranged marriage among Karaites in terms of comedy and satire. From other hand, it was written on the vernacular language of the Crimean Karaites and showcased verbal dexterity like traditional Karaite folksongs, sayings and riddles. Some formal elements of its plot were borrowed from traditional homiletic literature. The text of “Akhyr Zeman” demonstrates a reasonable compromise between “old” and “new” in the life of Karaites at the turn of the century. The play represents a crucial moment in the development of modern Karaite drama: the shift from the drama in the Haskalah cast to “ethnographic” comedy. It exerted an influence on later Karaite drama, first of all, on literary works of Aaron Katyk.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the return of Karaites to Israel. The Karaite absorption into Israel was not easy. Like other immigrants from Islamic countries, they had to learn a new language, overcome the prejudices of the veteran, westernized Israelis, and confront the economic difficulties of settling in a poor country. They were consequently faced with the challenge of how to build an identity as Israeli Karaite Jews in the face of some hostility. Indeed, not all Israeli Rabbanite Jews were happy to welcome the Karaites in Israel, and some actively protested their immigration. Israeli Karaites are faced, therefore, with the serious problems of lack of legal status, no formal recognition, absence of sufficient government funding, and anti-Karaite prejudice. Although most Egyptian Karaites emigrated to Israel, that was not their only destination. A number of them settled in Lausanne, Switzerland, which already had a small community; others settled in Paris and Marseilles, France. The largest group arrived in the United States, concentrating in the Bay Area of California. They also had to establish a community where none existed and adapt their religious observance to the new circumstances.

Abstract:
given that official dictionaries with standard terms are not currently available. We focused on Olympic combat sports (boxing, fencing, judo, karate, taekwondo and wrestling) and investigated alternatives in the process of terminology adaptation. Namely, during the adaptation of foreign terminology in the Serbian language, there are two possibilities: adaptation by transshaping versus adaptation using some of the translation procedures (literal translation, structural translation, partial structural translation, functional approximation and descriptive translation). The research was placed in the context of anglicization, theory of terminology standardization and translation. The corpus consisted of sports encyclopedias, dictionaries and databases on the Internet. The analysis showed that in the process of adaptation of chosen terms, both alternatives – transshaping and translation – are present, and that in a number of cases there is a need for parallel use of transshaped and translated terms. The specifics that are revealed within each of the sports we analyzed prompted us to think about a possible re-examination of current approaches to terminological standardization. Believing that the field of sports is one of the domains in which most young people show interest, we believe that through appropriate materials created for teaching English, it would be possible to raise the awareness of the importance of language norm among the younger population. The results obtained in the selected corpus can indicate current trends in the process of adaptation of sports terminology in the Serbian language as a whole.

Joseph Habib examines the attitudes of medieval Karaite exegetes and Saadya Gaon with regard to the qere and ketiv in the Masoretic Hebrew Bible on the basis of their commentaries and Arabic translations. Habib presents clear evidence that both Saadya and various Karaite exegetes relied on qere as well as ketiv for their exegesis. He shows that the main motivation to use one or the other as the basis of interpretation is harmonization with parallel verses.

This chapter deals with the Northwestern (Kipchak) branch of the Turkic language family. Examples taken from this branch of Turkic illustrate phonological, morphological, and syntactic features typical of Turkic languages. Reference is also made to special developments leading to the emergence of non-typical features in some Northwestern languages. Special emphasis is given to the description of the southern Kipchak language, Kazakh, in the middle of the Turkic-speaking world and to the moribund western Kipchak language, Lithuanian Karaim, on its northwestern periphery. Moreover, the typical Turkic features are compared to the 20 core structures (CS) in Transeurasian languages evaluated in Robbeets (2017h and this Oxford Guide).

ABSTRACT At the beginning of the third millennium in Kazakhstan, the reform of the education system continued, including the concept of development of the theory, methodology, and terminology of physical education. To a large extent, this issue has touched on the training and retraining of teachers and trainers with higher education – national sports, including the national martial arts of the East. The analysis of scientific and theoretical-practical modern educational (OP) training of Bachelor of Physical culture and sports specializing in martial arts and, in particular, in karate, allows us to conclude that it is necessary to improve training in sports concepts and terms not only in the original language (in this case - Japanese), but also in the languages of students - Kazakh, Russian, English. The proposed article summarizes the experience of modern developments of domestic and foreign researchers in the field of information and terminological foundations for the training of Karate Bachelors while studying at a university. The most urgent problems related to teaching students the special sports terms used in modern karate are considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Modeling and simulation of non-Darcy or turbulent flow are well documented in the literature and available in commercial reservoir simulators (E300, Intersect) only for gas wells rather than oil wells. There is a need to model non-Darcy or turbulent flow in reservoir simulation for oil wells in the carbonate reservoirs with highly connected and densely distributed fractures and karst. This paper proposes a new non-Darcy or turbulent flow modeling and simulation method for oil wells. Unlike the industry's existing methods for non-Darcy or turbulent flow that focus on the non-Darcy coefficient only, this paper presents a new method that models the ratio between non-Darcy and Darcy flows such that a unified model for a field or a region can be created, which significantly simplifies the non-Darcy or turbulent flow modeling process for multiple wells, especially for future wells. The ratio-based method is simple and comprehensive. It can be easily calibrated with MRT (multiple-rate test) data and implemented into in-house or commercial reservoir simulators using a simulator supported scripting language, e.g., Python etc. Kashagan is the world's largest oil reservoir discovered in the last 30 years that contains highly connected and densely distributed fractures and karst in its rim. The oil production rate for a well in the rim can be higher than several tens KSTB/D if it is not constrained by the facility. The current MRT data in all tested wells clearly show non-Darcy flow phenomenon and confirm that modeling non-Darcy flow is necessary to the field. Kashagan had experienced difficulties to match BHP (bottom hole pressure) and large errors in the blind test due to the OPEC's production curtailment and high-rate tests. Build-up pressure curves were miss-matched and HM (history match) of the crossflows (10 KSTB/D with less than 10 psi) in the bottomhole of a PLT (production logging tool) well during shut-in was challenging. Since modeling non-Darcy flow for oil wells in the commercial simulators, e.g., E300 and Intersect, is unavailable, the simulation team in NCOC has created a new method for the needs of non-Darcy modeling and simulation. The applications of the new method have resulted in the excellent results and solved the issues of history matching BHP, high/low-rate tests, build-up pressure trends, and bottomhole crossflows.
