Abstract:
The study is devoted to the issues of interinfluence of Russian and Karakalpak languages on a basis of borrowings by calquing. Borrowings of Russian words and word combinations by calquing specified as one of sources of enrichment of the lexicon of modern Karakalpak language. We analyze the features of some calqued terms. We characterize the ways of word formation by calquing method. Thematic directions and tendencies of forming of calques are highlighted. The process of calquing is shown in the light of historical development of society in different periods. Words and word combinations calqued from Russian into Karakalpak language, are subdivided on morphology-syntactic and semantic structure. Full and semi calques are analyzed. Various forms of perception in the Karakalpak language of word combinations of the Russian language by calquing are indicated. Some peculiarities of structural and semantic calques in Karakalpak language are discussed. Calqued lexical units are considered from the point of morphological structure. We analyze the calques formed by some suffixes. We characterize the linguistic phenomena occurring in the language during calquing using prefixes. We also discuss the problems of calquing in Karakalpak language of compound words from Russian languages, analyze the calques formed in Karakalpak language as the result of this process. We indicate the ways of forming semantic calques: determinologization, terminologization, conversion. The main factors of the semantic calquing appearance in the Karakalpak language are identified and substantiated.

Abstract:
We have documented language varieties (either Turkic or Indo-European) spoken in 23 test sites by 88 informants belonging to the major ethnic groups of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan (Karakalpaks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Yaghnobis). The recorded linguistic material concerns 176 words of the extended Swadesh list and will be made publically available with the publication of this paper. Phonological diversity is measured by the Levenshtein distance and displayed as a consensus bootstrap tree and as multidimensional scaling plots. Linguistic contact is measured as the number of borrowings, from one linguistic family into the other, according to a precision/recall analysis further validated by expert judgment. Concerning Turkic languages, the results of our sample do not support Kazakh and Karakalpak as distinct languages and indicate the existence of several separate Karakalpak varieties. Kyrgyz and Uzbek, on the other hand, appear quite homogeneous. Among the Indo-Iranian languages, the distinction between Tajik and Yaghnobi varieties is very clear-cut. More generally, the degree of borrowing is higher than average where language families are in contact in one of the many sorts of situations characterizing Central Asia: frequent bilingualism, shifting political boundaries, ethnic groups living outside the “mother” country.

Abstract:
Modality is a semantic category indicating the degree of factuality the speaker ascribes to his message. A message can be presented by its author as a statement of basic, a request or an order, or something obligatory, possible or probable but not an established fact. Modal verbs are widely used in English to express various kinds of modality. The English language is rich in modal verbs and their equivalents. As for Karakalpak language, it uses complex verbs as modal expressions, which consist of the combination of simple verbs and modal words. This paper aims to analyse these modal verbs in Modern English and their equivalents in Karakalpak. Such comparative research is significant for nowadays as this approach has the potential to make the learning of English language easier for Karakalpak speakers, while the number of people who are willing to English is only arising. Until now, no scientific work made a comparison of modality in Karakalpak and English.

According to scientists, the formation of grammatical skills in the process of mastering the Karakalpak language should occupy a strategic position, and practice has shown that students understand the meaning of words individually, but experience serious difficulties in combining them in a sentence since they have no idea how words should be combined to express a thought. Therefore, in order to form students' ability to build sentences for expressing thoughts, it is not enough to memorize typical phrases, it is necessary to teach children to build these phrases on their own.

Abstract:
In modern Uzbekistan, one of the fundamental directions of the internal policy of the republic is the development of new approaches to youth policy. The article problematizes the question of the traditional ideas of the Karakalpak about the age limits of the younger generation, about their preservation and the terms related to the youth, which are present in the Karakalpak language. The purpose of the article is to determine the age limit (based on the restriction), to study on the field material the former and modern terms used in the vocabulary of youth among the Karakalpaks. The article is based on the author’s field materials, collected during ethnographic expeditions in a number of regions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, such as Takhtakupyr, Chimbay, Muynak. For example, in the modern colloquial vocabulary of these areas, the following terms are often used: in relation to young men – bala (boy), zhas öspirim (young man), er bala (man), zhas zhigit (young guy), zhigit (guy), uilengen zhigit (married guy), for women – kyzalak (girl), zhas öspirim (younger), boy zhetken қyz (girl), zhas kelinshek (young daughter-in-law). The analysis of the collected materials showed that the traditional terms, which denote youth, were passed down from generation to generation and are present in modern youth vocabulary. However, the identified new words in relation to young people allow us to talk about innovations that have appeared under the influence of globalisation. These terms are used only in the youth environment, not extending to the vocabulary of the older generation.

The comprehensive examination of phraseological units demonstrates the scientific novelty. The study’s theoretical significance stems from its examination of the phraseological equivalence issue.
