Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses the five-string kantele as an example of the Finnish national heritage, a school instrument and an example of sustainable design. A qualitative case study was made by collecting the data from the Finnish students – prospective teachers – and the sixth form pupils, who had designed and carved their own five-string kanteles. The purpose of this research was to find out which aspects of five-string kantele design are considered the most important for sustainable principles and design among these youngsters. As results, the elements and principles of designing the five-string kantele are discussed and its relevance to five sustainable characteristics (creative, ecological, economic, aesthetic and socio-environmental) is presented. The sustainable values of the kantele and the purpose for which it is made are also considered.

В статье анализируются произведения для кантеле конструкции П. Салминена, созданные в Финляндии в промежутке с 1980-х по 2000-е годы тремя композиторами – П. Х. Нурдгреном, П. Ялканеном, М. Покела. Каждый из них, имея собственные причины для обращения к инструменту, стремился по-своему раскрыть его потенциал. При этом в рассмотренных подходах обнаружилось немало общего. Все авторы, прежде всего, работали с конструктивными ресурсами инструмента – механизмом переключения тонов, которым оснащено финское концертное кантеле. Он дал возможность использовать разные варианты настройки, не ориентированные на мажор или минор, а также открыл выход к использованию микрохроматики. Кроме того, композиторами оказались опробованы различные новые приёмы игры, благодаря которым достигаются разные сонорные эффекты. В совокупности с несвойственными для кантеле способами звукоизвлечения это позволяет говорить о современном кантеле, как о «новом» инструменте с расширенной техникой исполнительства. The article analyzes the music pieces for the kantele invented by Paul Salminen that were composed in Finland during the period from the 1980s to the 2000s by three composers – Pehr Henrik Nurdgren, Pekka Jalkanen, and Martti Pokela. Each of them, having reasons of their own for drawing their focus towards the instrument, wished for unleashing its potential in their own way. At the same time, the considered approaches revealed a lot in common. All authors, first of all, worked with the constructive resources of the instrument – the tone switching mechanism, which the Finnish concert kantele is equipped with. The mechanism made it possible to use different tuning options, not directed towards major or minor, and also opened the way to the use of microtonality. In addition, the composers tried various new playing techniques, which resulted in diverse sonorous effects. Together with the methods of sound production, unusual for the kantele, this allows us to speak of the modern kantele as of a “new” instrument with an extended performance technique.

Abstract:
Le modèle d'habilitation organisationnelle de Rosabeth Moss Kanter1 a été utilisé pour étudier les effets d'un projet de travail d'équipe pluridisciplinaire commencé pour préparer une enquête du Conseil canadien d'agrément des services de santé en 1995. Selon Kanter1, des structures de travail comme les équipes favorisent les occasions de formation et de croissance, permettent d'accéder à l'information, au soutien et aux ressources, habilitent les employés et augmentent la satisfaction professionnelle et le rendement. Les employés qui ont fait partie d'équipes pluridisciplinaires dans le cadre de l'enquête sur l'agrément (ṉ = 210) ainsi qu'un échantillon aléatoire d'employés qui n'ont pas fait partie de ces équipes (ṉ = 348) ont été interrogés pour vérifier leur perception de l'habilitation au travail et du degré de satisfaction professionnelle. En accord avec les propositions de Kanter, les membres qui ont fait partie d'équipes ont obtenu de meilleurs résultats quant à l'habilitation et ont perçu l'accès aux structures d'habilitation comme étant plus important que ceux qui n'en avaient pas fait partie. Dans l'ensemble, on a trouvé une perception beaucoup plus faible de l'accès aux structures d'habilitation que de l'importance de l'accès à ces structures. Les résultats de cette étude confirment l'utilisation d'équipes pluridisciplinaires comme stratégie de redéfinition des tâches pour améliorer l'efficacité du travail dans le secteur de la santé.

Abstract:
This artistic doctoral research examines how the third space emerging from intercultural dialogue and transcultural collaboration can be a catalyst for new musical discoveries, intercultural humility, and the (re)forming of artistic identities. The body of this project is centred around three doctoral concerts, a CD/LP recording, and a documentary film which took place between 2016 and 2021. In addition, I draw on the embodied experience of a five-year period that I spent living and collaborating with musicians and dancers in Tanzania and Zambia prior to the doctoral project.As a double bass player, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, I place myself in a series of different musical and multi-arts contexts, engaging in dialogue with musicians, dancers, and visual artists from Brazil, Colombia, Estonia, Finland, France, Madagascar, Mexico, Poland, Sápmi, Tanzania, the UK and Zambia. Various solo, duo, and ensemble settings act as case studies to examine how this process takes place, the new knowledge gained from the collaborations and their resulting artistic outcomes, and the effects of intercultural dialogue, collaboration, and co-creation on my own artistic identity. The instruments and forms of artistic expression used by my collaborators include the Brazilian berimbau, Chinese guzheng, dance, live electronics, experimental instrument making, Finnish Saarijärvi kantele, Sámi joik, vocals, percussion, live visuals, image manipulation, animation, photography and film.The key concepts that I investigate in this research are: artistic identity, global citizenship, hybridity, interculturalism, intercultural humility, liminality, third space theory, and resonance, the latter being viewed both as a physical phenomenon and as an approach to thinking about the ways in which we connect with the world around us. This research contributes to new knowledge and understandings in the areas of artistic identity formation, intercultural collaboration and interculturalism in music education through the interweaving of artistic processes, audio, video, photographs, artistic outcomes and text.Findings emerge in terms of new musical discoveries that surface from the dynamic third space created through transcultural collaboration; the expanding and deepening of musicianship through intercultural dialogue and collaboration; the interconnected nature of interculturalism in music and its reliance on openness, empathy, dialogue and constantnegotiation with sonic material, people and place; and the crucial role of fluidity and resonance in forming a personal artistic identity.Further research outcomes include new techniques and the expansion of the sonic palette of the double bass, enabled by developing custom-made attachments, preparations and electronic manipulation. The complete scope of this doctoral project includes four artistic components (three concerts and a recording), a documentary film and an artistic doctoral thesis comprising two peer-reviewed articles and an integrative chapter, all housed within the main multi-media exposition, Resonance: (Re)forming an Artistic Identity through Intercultural Dialogue and Collaboration.

Abstract:
Das bereits in Bachs Kantate BWV 134 angelegte dialogische Prinzip verschärft die Kölner Schriftstellerin Carola Moosbach in ihrem poetischen Kommentar zu konfrontativ gegeneinander gesetzten Aussagen von lapidarer Kürze. Diese werden in der Vertonung auf den zunächst ausschließlich einstimmig singenden Chor und die beiden Solisten verteilt. Die schroffe Gegenüberstellung kurzer, sich inhaltlich im Widerspruch zueinander befindlicher Phrasen wird auch von der Komposition durch starke Kontraste vollzogen. Jedoch werden die einzelnen Abschnitte, die den Gedichtzeilen entsprechen, im weiteren Verlauf zunehmend länger; die Wechsel zwischen den verschiedenen musikalischen Charakteren erfolgen daher in größeren Abständen. So nimmt die letzte Textzeile, an der Chor und Solisten gemeinsam beteiligt sind, mehr als ein Drittel der gesamten Spieldauer von gut sechs Minuten in Anspruch. Das dialogische Prinzip wird in einigen (vorrangig) rein instrumentalen Abschnitten auch auf die Gegenüberstellung von Bläsern und Streichern übertragen, die im raschen Wechsel agieren. Zu Johann Sebastian Bachs Vorlage hat die Komposition keinerlei konzeptionelle oder motivische Berührungspunkte. In zweierlei Hinsicht wird dies besonders deutlich: 1. Die Orgel pausiert die meiste Zeit, sie ist also kaum Continuoinstrument. Ihr erster Einsatz findet erst zu Beginn des ausgedehnten Schlussabschnitts statt, dann aber solistisch. 2. Im Gegensatz zu seinen meisten anderen Kantaten verzichtet Bach in BWV 134 auf einen Choral. Durch die Entscheidung, den Schlussabschnitt als Choralfantasie über „Christ ist erstanden“ (EG 99) zu gestalten, wird im vorliegenden Kantatensatz der im poetischen Kommentar kaum greifbare Bezug zu Ostern wesentlich verstärkt. Aus „Osterzweifel“ wird am Ende „Osterhoffnung“ oder auch „Osterzuversicht“. (Matthias Drude)

Abstract:
Numerische Methoden kombiniert mit historischen Daten erlauben, vergangene Wetterereignisse wie das Hochwasser von 1868 detailliert und quantitativ zu untersuchen. Das Hochwasser betraf vor allem die Kantone Tessin, Graubünden und Wallis und führte zu verheerenden Schäden. Ausgehend von Reanalysen und dynamischem Downscaling lässt sich das Ereignis mit hydrologisch-hydraulischen Modellen reproduzieren. Damit lassen sich die Folgen des historischen Hochwassers mit den potenziellen Schäden vergleichen, die ein Hochwasser dieser Grössenordnung heute verursachen könnte. Das Ereignis kann als ein extremes meteorologisch- hydrologisches Szenario betrachtet werden. Die betroffenen Flächen sind heute zwar weit intensiver besiedelt als damals, dafür zeigen die Flussverbauungen in der Magadinoebene Wirkung. Die Bewältigung der Schäden nach dem Ereignis prägt die Schweiz bis heute. Das Hochwasser von 1868 verhalf einem national koordinierten Hochwasserschutz zum Durchbruch.

Im 19. Jahrhundert und in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist die Biodiversität im Schweizer Wald stark unter Druck gekommen. Die Lage hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten wieder verbessert. Ökologische Defizite sind aber weiterhin vorhanden und werden von Bund und Kantonen, in Zusammenarbeit mit der Waldbranche, aktiv angegangen. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie zusätzlich zu den bestehenden Defiziten wie Totholz, standortfremde Bestände und fehlende Altersphasen der Bestände aktuelle Herausforderungen wie Stickstoffeinträge und der Klimawandel bewältigt werden können. Zusätzlich gilt es, die vielfältigen Interessen und Funktionen des Waldes in einer zukunftsfähigen Vision für den Naturschutz im Wald zu vereinen. Der Bund und die Kantone setzen die Priorität auf den Schutz von Waldreservaten, Altholzinseln und Biotopbäumen sowie auf die Aufwertung der Lebensräume für national prioritäre Arten und Waldgesellschaften. Die Bedeutung des Waldes als Grosshabitat im Netz der ökologischen Infrastruktur der Schweiz muss aufgezeigt, verstärkt und auch in anderen Sektoralpolitiken wie der Landwirtschaft verbessert werden.

Abstract:
This study explored the experiences of private TVET college educators regarding virtual learning during the Covid-19 school lockdown. The Kanter theory of change is adopted as the theoretical base in this study. Data collection was done through face-to-face semi structured interviews and non-participant observation. Collected data was analyzed using content analysis. Findings reveal that though participants have positive attitude toward the process of change required in transitioning from traditional environment to virtual environment, majority of them did not receive substantive training on how to use technology to support virtual teaching. However, educators indicated that the change process comes with several challenges such as technical problems, ineffective communication from management, workload, inadequate training, lack of access to ICT tools and lack of other structural support within the college which impacts their effective implementation of virtual teaching. Thus, teachers should be adequately prepared, supported and empowered to cope with the changes and transition processes involved to continue teaching in a virtual environment. More so, TVET college managers and policy makers should priorities change management programmes designed to prepare teachers for the inevitability of technological change in education.

Nacionālā pretošanās kustība Latvijā Otrā pasaules kara laikā bija neviennozīmīga. Tās vispārējai izplatībai un efektivitātei traucēja fakts, ka tā nebija saliedēta. Līdz 1943. gadam nebija centralizētas organizācijas, kas apvienotu un iedvesmotu Latvijas iedzīvotājus pretoties gan padomju, gan arī nacistiskās Vācijas okupāciju režīmam. Īsi pēc nacistiskās Vācijas iebrukuma Padomju Savienībā 1941. gada 22. jūnijā Latvijas teritorijā jau norisinājās pretošanās. Notika spontāni uzbrukumi padomju varas iestā­dēm, represīvajiem orgāniem un to atbalstītājiem. Šīs totalitārās varas nodarītās pārestības Latvijas iedzīvotājiem tautas atmiņā nekur nepazuda. Būtiski atzīmēt, ka daļa pretošanās kustības dalībnieku izprata pretošanos kā nepieciešamību sadarboties ar nacistiskās Vācijas okupācijas režīmu. Šo attieksmi pamatā piedēvē tiem cilvēkiem, kas īsi pēc tam iestājās t. s. kārtības jeb policijas dienestos (literatūrā figurē arī apzīmējums “šucmaņi”). Pēc 1943. gada ziemas šo attieksmi zināmā mērā var piedēvēt arī tiem Latvijas iedzīvotājiem, kuri dienēja Latviešu SS brīvprātīgo leģionā. Cilvēki ticēja, ka šīs vienības veidos pamatu neatkarīgās Latvijas jaunizveidotajai armijai. Literatūrā mazāk pazīstamas un pētītas nacionālās pretošanās kustību personības ir Jāzeps Rancāns un Vladislavs Lōcis. Tāpat vērts pieminēt Andreja Eglīša un Lūcijas Garūtas ieguldījumu. Kaut arī šie cilvēki nepretojās tiešā veidā, viņu darbos un atmiņās parādās attieksme pret abu okupāciju režīmiem, tādējādi šo mantojumu var skatīt kā dažādas pretošanās kustības formas. 1943. gadā bīskaps Jāzeps Rancāns tika ievēlēts par jaundibinātās Latvijas Centrālās padomes priekšsēdētāju. Vienlaikus viņš uzņēmās Latvijas prezidenta pilnvaras gan kara laikā, gan arī pēckara starptautiskajā apziņā. Savukārt Vladislavs Lōcis bija grāmatizdevējs Daugavpilī. Viņa darbība kara laikā parāda cilvēku, kurš pēc dabas ir mūžīgais optimists. Cilvēks, kurš spītē visam, lai turpinātu savu ieguldījumu Latgales kultūrā. Tikmēr Rīgā Andrejs Eglītis un Lūcija Garūta sarakstīja kantāti “Dievs, Tava zeme deg!”. Vācu okupācijas laikā izpildītā kantāte ir kā pretošanās forma, jo tā iemieso Latvijas vēsturisko traģēdiju, tās iedzīvotāju mūžīgo likteņa samezglojumu.

The projects sponsored by the Gülen-inspired movement are numerous, international and costly in terms of human and financial capital. Critics of the movement often question the fi- nancing of these initiatives – with some convinced of collusion with Middle Eastern govern- ments, others (within Turkey) suspicious that Western governments are financially backing the projects. Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting follow- ers, Fethullah Gülen indicated greater financial transparency must become a priority for the movement. This paper addresses the financing of Gülen-inspired projects, based on interviews with busi- ness leaders in Turkey, as well as local businessmen throughout Turkey who constitute the financial infrastructure of the movement. In addition, the paper presents data from one local Gülen movement organisation in Houston, Texas, that collects thousands of dollars annually from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. The paper is framed sociologically in terms of organisational theories of commitment. Beginning with Kanter (1972;1977) and including subsequent major figures in the organi- sational field (e.g. Reichers 1985; Meyer and Allen 1991; Hall 2002; Scott 2003), scholars have demonstrated a positive correlation between sacrifices asked of members and degree of commitment to the goals of the organisation. Using this perspective, the paper argues that the financial contributions made by members in the Gülen movement both demonstrate commit- ment to the ideals espoused by Fethullah Gülen and generate commitment to the movement. The paper presents empirical evidence, based on interviews with financial supporters both in Turkey and the U.S., of how financial resources are generated, the initiatives being supported and the impact of financial giving on the commitment of supporters. The Gülen movement is a civil society movement that arose in the late 1960s in Turkey, initially composed of a loose network of individuals who were inspired by M. Fethullah Gülen. As a state-approved mosque preacher, Gülen delivered sermons in cities throughout Turkey, beginning with a handful of listeners and gradually drawing tens of thousands of people. His sermons focused not only on religious texts but included a broad array of such topics as religion and science, social justice, human rights, moral values and the importance of education. Gülen repeatedly stressed the importance of educating the youth of society by establishing first-rate schools that expose students to the latest scientific knowledge in an at- mosphere of moral values. The projects sponsored by Gülen-inspired followers today number in the thousands, span international borders and are costly in terms of human and financial capital (Woodhall 2005). These initiatives include over 2000 schools and seven universities in more than ninety countries in five continents (Yavuz and Esposito 2003; Baskan 2004; Tekalan 2005), two modern hospitals, the Zaman newspaper (now in both a Turkish and English edition), a television channel (Samanyolu), a radio channel (Burc FM), CHA (a ma- jor Turkish news agency), Aksiyon (a leading weekly news magazine), national and interna- tional Gülen conferences, Ramadan interfaith dinners, interfaith dialog trips to Turkey from countries around the globe and the many programs sponsored by the Journalists and Writers Foundation. In addition, the Isik insurance company and Bank Asya, an Islamic bank, are af- filiated with the Gülen community. In 1993 the community also established the Business Life Cooperation Association (ISHAD) which has 470 members (Baskan 2004). Questions regarding the financing of these numerous and expensive projects are periodically raised by both critics of the Gülen Movement and newcomers to the movement who are invited to Gülen related events. Because of the large amounts of money involved in these projects, on occasion people have raised the possibility of a collusion between the movement and various governments, especially Saudi Arabia and/or Iran, and including the Turkish government. There has even been suspicion that the American CIA may be a financial partner behind the projects (Kalyoncu, forthcoming). Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting followers, Fethullah Gülen indicated that a priority must be proactive financial transparency. In this paper, we address directly the issue of the financing of Gülen inspired projects based on the little that is available in published sources, including an interview with Gülen himself, and supplementing that information with interviews with business leaders in Turkey who constitute the infrastructure of the movement. In addition, we present data from one local Gülen organization in Houston, Texas, that regularly collects over half a million dollars from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. Our analysis is framed socio- logically in terms of organizational theories of commitment. We argue that the contributions made by rank and file movement members, as well as by wealthier sponsors, both demon- strate commitment to the ideals of the movement and simultaneously generate commitment to the movement. An analysis of Gülen-inspired financial contributions must include the ideological and reli- gious motivations inherent in the concepts of hizmet, himmet, sohbet, istisare, and mutevelli. For an understanding of these concepts, we are most indebted to the superb work of Mehmet Kalyoncu whose study of the Gülen movement in Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey, was very helpful both in understanding these ideas and in demonstrating their applicability to the financing of local projects in the city.

Abstract:
Die geplante Wiederverwendung von gereinigtem Abwasser kann konventionelle Wasserressourcen entlasten und den Wasserverbrauch senken. Sie ist eine mögliche Handlungsoption im integralen Wasserressourcenmanagement, wenn der Nutzen im lokalen Kontext den notwendigen Aufwand (zusätzliche Aufbereitung, Infrastruktur, Kosten, Energie) überwiegt. Im vorliegenden Projekt wurde untersucht, ob die Wasserwiederverwendung eine relevante Option für das Wasserressourcenmanagement in der Schweiz sein könnte. Dazu wurden bestehende Daten zur Wasserverfügbarkeit und zum -Verbrauch analysiert und eine Umfrage zum Thema bei den kantonalen Umweltfachstellen durchgeführt. Aufgrund des Klimawandels kommt es in der Schweiz bereits heute häufiger zu Trockenheitsperioden, insbesondere im Sommer. Die damit verbundenen Hitzeereignisse führen zu einem Anstieg des Wasserbedarfs für verschiedene Anwendungen (Bewässerung in der Landwirtschaft und in den Städten, Kühlwasser etc.). Auf lokaler Ebene haben Vertretende von 19 der 26 Kantone einen Bedarf für die Wasserwiederverwendung für verschiedene Anwendungen, besonders für die Bewässerung, festgestellt. Zudem wird erwartet, dass dieser Bedarf mit dem fortschreitenden Klimawandel ansteigen wird. Ausserdem weist die Wasserwiederverwendung Synergien mit anderen Massnahmen im Wasserressourcenmanagement auf, z.B. mit der Speicherung von Wasser für Zeiten mit erhöhtem Bedarf. Für die Wiederverwendung von Wasser müssen klare Vorgaben bezüglich Qualität, nutzbarer Menge und technischer Rahmenbedingungen definiert werden, um Mensch und Umwelt nicht zu gefährden. Um Wasserwiederverwendungsprojekte langfristig erfolgreich umzusetzen zu können, muss zudem die soziale Akzeptanz gewährleistet sein. Derzeit ist die Wasserwiederverwendung im Schweizer Recht nicht explizit geregelt; im Prinzip ist nur die Bewässerung implizit verboten, während alle anderen Anwendungen grundsätzlich erlaubt sind, jedoch ohne Vorgaben zur Umsetzung oder Qualität. Zudem fehlen in der Schweiz Erfahrungen, Wissen und Kompetenzen für ihre Umsetzung. Daher wird empfohlen, in praktischen Pilotprojekten Erfahrungen zu sammeln und projektspezifische Informationen zu ermitteln (Kosten, benötigte Infrastruktur etc.). Parallel dazu sollte ein koordinierter Gesetzesanpassungsprozess stattfinden, der einen sicheren Umsetzungsrahmen für die Praxis in der Schweiz schafft. Damit wird sichergestellt, dass die Wasserwiederverwendung als sichere und kontrollierte Massnahme im zukünftigen Wasserressourcenmanagement zur Verfügung steht.
