Hildebrand, Carl H. "Kant and Moral Responsibility." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20641.

Full text
Abstract:
This project is primarily exegetical in nature and aims to provide a rational reconstruction of the concept of moral responsibility in the work of Immanuel Kant, specifically in his Critique of Pure Reason (CPR), Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (GR), and Critique of Practical Reason (CPrR). It consists of three chapters – the first chapter interprets the concept of freedom that follows from the resolution to the Third Antinomy in the CPR. It argues that Kant is best understood here to be providing an unusual but cogent, compatibilist account of freedom that the author terms meta-compatibilism. The second chapter examines the GR and CPrR to interpret the theory of practical reason and moral agency that Kant develops in these works. This chapter concludes by evaluating what has been established about Kant’s ideas of freedom and moral agency at that point in the project, identifying some problems and objections in addition to providing some suggestions for how Kantian ethics might be adapted within a consequentialist framework. The third chapter argues that, for Kant, there are two necessary and jointly sufficient conditions (in addition to a compatibilist definition of freedom) that must obtain for an individual to qualify as responsible for her actions.

Burnham, Hugh Douglas. "Kant, Heidegger and spacing." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1992. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/55858/.

Full text
Abstract:
Kant's metaphysics of space periods is explored via his in both the pre-critical and critical relation to Leibniz, the incongruent counterparts argument, and the distinctive arguments of the Transcendental Aesthetic. Sequentially, Heidegger's phenomenology of space from the period of Being and Time is explicated in terms of concepts like deseverance, directionality, region and equipmentality. The two analyses are found to overlap on several key points. These include: the priority of the whole over the parts, openness, and exteriority and thus non-discursivity. The points of overlap we call 'spacing' . Through further analyses, it is discovered that the concepts of spacing are precisely the concepts required by these two philosophers even when they treat of subjects not normally considered essentially spacial. These subjects include the nature of temporal relations, of selfhood and self-constancy, and of the experience and significance of art. The importance of spacing for these subjects is individually discussed, as are possible reasons why the language of space should be required.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Andrea Staiti
This study concerns the nature and role of analyticity in the work of Immanuel Kant and Edmund Husserl. Its initial goal is that of clarifying the place of analytic judgment in Kant's critical project. Against the widely held assumption that analytic judgment has no role to play in the critical project, I show that analytic judgment has a precise and genuinely important role to play in the context of Kant's metaphysics. Analytic judgment has the role of clarifying our a priori conceptual repertoire and thus of making possible the synthetic a priori judgments that are properly constitutive of metaphysics. The next goal of the study is that of unifying and defending Kant's various characterizations of analytic judgment. Whereas a number of commentators have suggested that Kant is vague or ambivalent as regards the properties of analytic judgment, I show that we can extract a clear, consistent picture of analytic judgment from his work. The key to seeing this, I argue, is becoming clear on Kant's basic assumptions concerning concepts, logic, and propositional form. Subsequently, I turn to Husserl. Picking up on the fact that for Husserl, too, analyticity has metaphysical, or ontological significance, I spell out his conception of analyticity in detail. I show that analyticity for Husserl embraces two essentially symmetrical domains of law: the a priori laws of objective givenness and the a priori laws of propositional form. I then bring Husserl and Kant together. After showing that Husserl fails to capture the essence of Kant's theory of analytic judgment, and so fails to see exactly where he stands relative to Kant, I argue that what ultimately distinguishes Husserl from Kant is the claim that analytic truth is properly articulated in a purely formal context. I show that this departure from Kant has extremely significant consequences. For example, it enables Husserl to describe whole systems of judgment, such as mathematics or logic, as analytic; and it enables Husserl to defend the possibility of analytic judgments having empirical content

Abstract:
Kant' s jurídical and polítical meditations fit inside the critical system as a proyect that faces the challenge of building a bridge between liberty and nature. In this sense, law, conceived by Kant as categorical imperative, must accomplish the task of conciliating the need to reform the State in order to achieve justice with the preservation of an irresistible civil authority. The polítical problem is, then, to resolve the conflict between liberty and order. The polítical antinomy (empiricism vs. fanaticism) is resolved with the definition of a practical rationality based on the publicity of polítical rules. Without abolishing the difficulties of Kant's jurídical philosophy, this solution allows to define an intersubjective space of polítical rationality, both free of jurídical positivism and decisionism as well as of historicism or of the dictatorship of a fanatical reason.

Paris 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA010556.

Full text
Abstract:

Billouet, Pierre. "L'age de raison - kant." Nantes, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997NANT3005.

Full text
Abstract:
L'age de raison is the time of maturity, the time of freedom for and to, in the epoch of reason. So we have to elucidate the identity and the difference between the author of the critique of pure reason and the ideal of the wise man. To teach the doctrine of highest good (summum bonum : supremum and consummatum) the critical philosopher travels the dogmatic meaning of the concepts of i, world and god, by the criticist-philosophical concept of thing-in-itself. There is no critical theory of the thing-in-itself, but the argument of jacobi reduces it excessively to the only category of causality. We have to elucidate all the possible meanings of the thing-in-itself, by re-reading the critical texts, enter into all the details, and by following the development of each category. First we show the impossibility of a scholar reading of the texts in the french translations. Then we show a difference between the systematical requirement of the inscribeds of the critical philosophy and the textual reality of the kantians writings : the i, the world and god are not always thought, in the writings, respectively by the category of substance, causality and communauty. We try to restaure the critical systematicity, by rectifying some non-critical kantian writings, and by developing systematically the inscribeds, particulary those of communauty. And we try to maintain the propaedeutic caractere of the critique of aesthetic judgement of taste, by moving the analysis of the critique of teleological judgement at their respective places on the system - and by not privileging the analytic of sublime. In the second part we examine the statute of the professor of wisdom at the critical epoch of the destruction of the ontology, by difference with the statute of the scholastic professor : aristotle and aquinas

Abstract:
This thesis argues that Kant has a viable, intellectualist account of moral character that is much richer and more interesting than has often been thought. This account is consistent with his broader practical philosophy, in particular, his account of moral worth. Chapter one establishes that Kant has a theory of education on which a child's inclinations are to be trained in preparation for her to grasp the moral law and acquire full moral agency. It argues that his account of habit is complex, recognizing a kind of moral value that is broader than his definition of moral worth. Chapter two argues that sympathy is, for Kant, a primarily cognitive disposition of special importance; this is because it provides knowledge of how the moral law applies in particular circumstances, therefore enabling an agent to fulfill her duties toward others. This chapter also resolves a puzzle concerning Kant's dual concept of character (as both intelligible and empirical) by drawing an analogy with one account of weakness of will. Chapter three develops an account of moral worth that incorporates these more palatable elements of Kant's account of moral character with the seemingly more austere elements familiar from the Groundwork. This theory allows for positive, participating inclinations alongside ascriptions of moral worth. Further, it introduces a distinction between full and mitigated moral worth, to account for agents who, for example, act rightly but for confused reasons as in the case of Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Chapter four responds to two objections to Kant on the basis of moral demandingness, one concerning psychological integration and personal relationships, the other concerning the value of non-moral goods more broadly. It then responds to some objections to his account of the highest good, or the idea of a world in which happiness is distributed in proportion to virtue.
