Srithai, Boontarika. "Geochemistry and petrogenesis of corundum from the Bo Ploi deposit, Kanchanaburi, Thailand." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445108/.

Full text
Abstract:
Corundum from the Bo Ploi deposit, Kanchanaburi, Thailand and its associated Tertiary alkali basalt were studied in terms of mineralogy, geochemistry and petrogenesis to ascertain the genetic link between these materials. Gem quality corundum, sapphire variety, is composed of almost pure AI2O3 with a small but significant amount of FeO and TiC > 2. Optical spectroscopic studies reveal that the blue colour is caused by Fe2+ - Ti4+ intervalence charge transfer. The syn-genetic inclusions are mineral inclusions, including, feldspar, zircon, spinel, pyrochlore, boehmite, rutile, monazite, and opaque minerals fluid inclusions and silicate melt inclusions. Microthermometric studies of fluid and silicate-melt inclusions trapped in these sapphires suggest that they grew from silicate-melt under H2O-, COrrich and hypersaline brine conditions at the temperature approximately 800- 1000 C. The silicate-melt inclusions are trachyandesitic compositions indicating that the Bo Ploi corundum is magmatic origin forming from the extreme fractionation of trachyandesitic magma with additional alumina contamination from crustal materials and brought to the surface by later eruption of the Bo Ploi basalt. The sapphires oxygen isotope chemistry, 8180 6.5-9.6%o, suggests a mingling of crustal and mantle oxygen isotope thus confirming the role of crustal contamination. The Bo Ploi Tertiary basalt is a within-plate magma of basanite composition, which differentiated through the fractional crystallisation process without a significant crustal contamination, 5 O 6.0-6.9%o, although numbers of crustal xenoliths including granites, nepheline syenite and quartzite are found in it. The basanites also accommodated mantle xenoliths, mainly spinel lherzolite, which provided P-T scheme based on thermodynamic calculations of coexisting mineral equilibria in the range of 11 to 24 kbar and temperature of 1000 to 1200 C correspond to the depths of 36 to 79 km in the upper mantle.

Buaban, Maslin. "Community-based creative tourism management to enhance local sustainable development in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/24246.

Full text
Abstract:
Encouraging local people to participate in tourism planning and management can enhance local sustainable development because the host community plays a major role in the future direction of tourism (Murphy, 1985 and Mowforth and Munt, 1998). However, tourism sites in developing countries have limitations in terms of local participatory actions (Tosun, 2000). From the 1990s onwards, creative tourism has increased in popularity in many places around the world. This is thought to be due to its generation of profits that can be used to develop and preserve communities and provide a motivation for local participation. Previous studies have indicated creative tourism is one appropriate solution for challenges in cultural tourism because it can respond to the needs of cultural-based tourism sites to revive and differentiate themselves and provide for active tourists’ needs. There have only been a few studies that have explored the links between sustainable development and creative tourism (Solène, 2011; and Vide 2013). No study has yet linked community-based management with creative tourism. In this study, grounded theory was applied to provide an intensive explanation of the phenomenon and to produce a framework to assist with sustainable development in a community that has value in terms of local wisdom and culture in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. It presents the factors and processes of community-based creative tourism management which can encourage a higher level of local participatory action and lead to local sustainable development. It is the result of collaboration among local stakeholders, residents and tourism networks and was produced to create a sustainable process of community-based development and management of creative tourism activities that provide valuable knowledge and skills for tourists while developing and preserving the community. The research results can add to previous literature with a new theoretical perspective into community-based creative tourism management in rural areas.

Klaikao, Lucksana, and n/a. "Community radio in thailand in 1998-2002: comparative studies of four community radio stations." University of Canberra. Professional Communication, 2004. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060410.114156.

Full text
Abstract:
Community radio in Thailand is an alternative to public, commercial and state radio with unique characteristics in that listeners can participate at all levels. Community radio varies considerably in its definitions as well as serving several purposes depending on its role in the nation's media system. However, its fundamental philosophy is similar in that radio is used to serve the needs and the interests of the community. Access and participation in small-scale media may not only empower the voiceless, but also maintain local identity and cultures. The reformation of the Thai broadcasting media system by Section 40 of the 1997 constitution and the 2000 Broadcasting Act has increased the chance for some communities to use radio to fulfill their community development needs. The aims of this thesis are: to explore Thai community radio in the broader context of community radio internationally; to examine Thai broadcasting policies on community radio; to explore the development of Thai community radio in relation to the wider liberalisation of the media between 1998 and 2002; and to analyse similarities and differences in station management, programming and audience reception in the four different models of community radio that developed in a range of different provincial Thai community radio stations. A comparative case study using qualitative research methods was used to examine the four case studies, namely at Petchaburi (PRD, 1998) Nakhon Si Thammarat (MCOT, 1998), Roi Et (INN, 2000), and Kanchanaburi (people's radio, 200 I). The contribution of this thesis lies in its exploration of different models of Thai community radio so as to illustrate different interpretations by several stakeholders of community radio discourse, as well as reflecting the constraints on community broadcasting caused by the political economy of the broadcasting system and regulatory inconsistencies. It concludes that community radio has not yet contributed to a more empowered media because of several constraints. Thai community radio did not pursue real participatory communication to empower its listeners. It merely widened the public space for local communities to have more choices for information community-based programs with phone-in formats that provided twoway communication. Thai community radio has not created a wider liberalisation of the media, however, its development facilitated media democratisation through promoting the media reform process, and increasing the awareness of citizens' rights among ordinary people. Station manager and middle-class activists played important roles in putting forth local issues for public discussion. Increasing numbers of local people became alert to their rights to communicate as promised by the 1997 constitution, but unfortunately media reform lacked government support. The Thaksin government had an ambivalent attitude and contradictory policies towards community radio.

In Thailand, the industrial mining contributes to the economic development of the country through foreign exchange earnings, employment and improved living standard of Thai people nearby the mining area. However, the processing water and disposal of mining tailings during its operation have become a long-term potential health and environmental risk. This study assessed and examined the impacts of closed lead-mining field on resident health and the surrounding environment in Thailand. A case study of the closed and abandoned lead mine located in the Klithy Creek of Kanchanaburi (here in after referred to as KC-mine) in the nation was examined. Pollution from closed mines normally comes from two main sources: the discharge of wastewater during mining workings and the wasted materials spread on the surface of soil. During the operation, the processing water and tails of lead-mine was drained and discharged from working areas, that resulted in increasing the levels of lead in surrounding water bodies and soils. According to the estimation data of Pollution Control Department of Thailand in 2015 for the average diary dose (ADD) of lead based on the environmental pollution monitoring data of surface water, creek sediment, air, fish (muscle), rice, and vegetables in neighboring area of KC-mine, this study found that, in upstream residents, the lead-ADD of children is 6.5892 μg/kg/day and that of the adult is 3.9383 μg/kg/day. In downstream residents, the lead-ADD of children is 5.7360 μg/kg/day and that of adult is 3.5643 μg/kg/day. The lead-ADD of residents whether living in upstream or downstream areas are obviously higher than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of potential impact to human health, i.e., TDI of children and adult are 3.517, which were provided by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). In addition, the most of pathway of contaminant distribution from high to low is the indirect water intake when swimming in the creek and bathing with the creek water (69.06%), that from ingestion of fish food (20.51%), ingestion of rice (9.20%), and from inhalation of air (1.23%) in sequence. In view of the effort in restoration of contaminated KC-mining field by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) basing on the opinions of authorized government personnel, environmental engineer, and residents living in Klithy Creek of Kanchanaburi, application of pollution control engineering and government intervention measures should be carried out. The result through AHP process of this study reveals that the removal of sediments by dredging for remediation was most preferred by all expert groups because this remediation method requires less time to achieve efficient contaminant cleanup, and also around this site has suitable disposal sites to reduces transport-related operating costs. Nevertheless, the environmental engineering also prefers the monitoring natural recovering (MNR) due to this area is the lead potential site and highly uncertain of contaminated sediment lead to uncertainty of remediation dredging. It likely to adversely impact water quality and engineering controls may not be effective in protecting water quality which this is a main issue that can affect to health of residents. Furthermore, based on the AHP results and limitation, I preferred the environmental dredging method for the area of the high potential health risk. The vertical barriers wall was proposed for the area of the high potential for sediment mobility but low potential human health, and also continuously monitor the spread of pollution as well as the environmental rehabilitation policy should be carried out for the lead-contaminating area to ensure that the effects of resident health and environmental impact in the KC-mining area can be reduced to the minimum.
