Abstract:
Like all other world religions, Brahmanism and Buddhism, the two prominent religious traditions of India, have histories of development and transformations since their inception. Depending on the socio-economic and political scenario, religions are subject to change, often in their basic beliefs and rituals, and at a certain point of time, the interaction between diverse religious traditions also becomes inevitable. Although opponent by nature in their early philosophies, Buddhism and Brahmanism got entwined at a certain phase of history, when many Buddhist deities and rituals were accommodated within the purview of Brahmanism and vice-versa. In the history of Brahmanical tradition, this interaction is traceable in the narratives of Puranic texts composed during the first millennium years of the Christian Era (ce). For the present study, one such Puranic text: the Kalikapurana, composed in Kamarupa (early Assam) during the early-medieval period, has been taken into account to understand the process of interaction between Brahmanism and Buddhism in the historical context of early Assam. Being primarily Brahmanical religious texts, the Puranas contain traces of Buddhism only in ‘covert’ form: in the form of myth. Focussing on some myths narrated in the Kalikapurana, the present study will discuss the existence of Buddhism in the early-Brahmaputra valley prior to the coming of Brahmanism. It will help us to understand the strategies adopted by the immigrant Brahmins to accommodate the prevailing traits under the purview of Brahmanical Hinduism.

Fakoemülsifikasyon cerrahisi sonrası akut kornea ödemi gelişen bir katarakt olgusunda, Descemet membran dekolmanının (DMD) ayırıcı tanı ve tedavisini sunmayı amaçladık. 52 yaşındaki bayan hasta, sol gözde rutin fakoemülsifikasyon cerrahisi sonrası postoperatif 16. gün farkedilen DMD’ye sekonder akut kornea ödemi ve görme bozukluğu şikayeti ile kiniğe başvuruyor. Olgunun postoperatif 16. gün kontrolünde görme keskinliği sağ gözde 0.8, sol gözde ise 50cm’den parmak sayma düzeyinde olduğu görüldü. Biyomikroskobik muayenede sağ gözde nükleer skleroz, sol gözde üst temporal bölge hariç yaygın kornea ödemi izlenmekteydi. Göz içi basınçları her iki gözde normaldi. Fundus muayenesinde sağ doğal, solda net olarak değerlendirilememekle beraber göz dibi ultrasonografik olarak normaldi. DMD’den şüphelenilerek anterior segment optik kohorens tomografi (ASOCT) çekildi. ASOCT görüntülerinde korneal epitelyal ve stromal ödem altında ikinci bir ön kamara oluşturan hiperreflektif bant fark edilmiştir. Hastaya DMD ve buna bağlı kornea ödemi tanısı konarak, ön kamaraya perfloropropan (C3F8) enjeksiyonu yapıldı. Enjeksiyonu takip eden 3. günde, parasantral descemet kırışıklıkları dışında kornea saydamdı, ön kamarada superiorda gaz mevcut idi ve görme keskinliği 0,2 düzeyine çıkmıştı. Bu olgu bize 14 günü aşan DMD’lerde intrakamaral gaz enjeksiyonlarının etkili bir tedavi yöntemi olabileceğini göstermektedir.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Cancer contributes to significant morbidity and mortality despite advances in treatment and supportive care. There is a need for the identification of effective anticancer agents. Reptiles such as tortoise, python, and water monitor lizards are exposed to heavy metals, tolerate high levels of radiation, feed on rotten/germ-infested feed, thrive in unsanitary habitat and yet have prolonged lifespans. Such species are rarely reported to develop cancer, suggesting the presence of anticancer molecules/mechanisms. Methods: Here, we tested effects from sera of Asian water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), python (Malayopython reticulatus) and tortoise (Cuora kamaroma amboinensis) against cancer cells. Sera were collected and cytotoxicity assays were performed using prostate cancer cells (PC3), Henrietta Lacks cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) and human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF7), as well as human keratinized skin cells (Hacat), by measuring lactate dehydrogenase release as an indicator for cell death. Growth inhibition assays were performed to determine the effects on cancer cell proliferation. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry was performed for molecular identification. Results: The findings revealed that reptilian sera, but not bovine serum, abolished viability of Hela, PC3 and MCF7 cells. Samples were subjected to liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, which detected 57 molecules from V. salvator, 81 molecules from Malayopython reticulatus and 33 molecules from C. kamaroma amboinensis and putatively identified 9 molecules from V. salvator, 20 molecules from Malayopython reticulatus and 9 molecules from C. kamaroma amboinensis when matched against METLIN database. Based on peptide amino acid composition, binary profile, dipeptide composition and pseudo-amino acid composition, 123 potential Anticancer Peptides (ACPs) were identified from 883 peptides from V. salvator, 306 potential ACPs from 1074 peptides from Malayopython reticulatus and 235 potential ACPs from 885 peptides from C. kamaroma amboinensis. Conclusion: To our knowledge, for the first time, we reported comprehensive analyses of selected reptiles’ sera using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, leading to the identification of potentially novel anticancer agents. We hope that the discovery of molecules from these animals will pave the way for the rational development of new anticancer agents.

Abstract:

Marsh, Wendell Hassan. "Compositions of Sainthood: The Biography of Ḥājj ʿUmar Tāl by Shaykh Mūsā Kamara." Thesis, 2018. https://doi.org/10.7916/D81G23P4.

Full text
Abstract:
Compositions of Sainthood explores the role performed by texts in the making of Muslim sainthood in its spiritual and worldly dimensions by interpreting Shaykh Mūsā Kamara’s biography of Ḥājj ʿUmar Tāl and situating this Arabic-language work within the problem-space of the founding moment of Senegalese modernity. In writing about the life, lineage, and legacy of one of the most memorialized figures in the colonial federation of French West Africa, Kamara intervened within an anti-historical space of signification that has been characterized by difference in representation and interpretation of the nature of saintly authority, its means of transmission, and the relationship between Islam and colonialism. Because of the specificity of Kamara’s Ashhā l-ʻulūm wa aṭayab al-khabar fī sīrat al-Ḥājj ʿUmar, the text is a problem: a contradictory, paradoxical, and exceptional composition that demands questions that are worth asking. This problem has three parts and corresponds to Ashha’s three textual modes. It narrates the Umarian contradiction as the conflict between a form of saintly authority based on righteous piety and another based on temporal power. It also archives differing arguments that sought to resolve the contradiction of the ideality of friendship with God and the materiality of authority on earth during the Umarian moment. Finally, the text contests the naturalization of power ʿUmar’s descendants during the colonial period and instead insists on a model of the transmission of authority based on intellectual and spiritual affiliation. Taken together, this problem of the composition of sainthood reveals the problem-space defined by the negotiation of saintly lineages and the colonial state, which used filial descent to authorize the former’s place in the management of colonial production and the administration of colonial order.

This diploma thesis deals with camarilla changes of three Russian rulers. Sources and literature of this theme are dealt in the thesis introduction. Camarilla, favourite, favouritism and absolutism are defined in another chapter. Subsequent chapters deal with particular rulers, their accession to the throne, key government institutions and mainly with the most important camarilla members. Last chapter compares the three regimes. Firstly it goes in for qualifications of rulers to rule. Further it compares their favourites and then it focusses at the most successful persons who were able to maintain their position throughout several regimes and gives reply to questions if those people had common features which were reasons for success and if these positions sometimes changed or remained constant.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A második világháború kitörése után Magyarország a német követelésnek helyt nem adva befogadta és széleskörű társadalmi szolidaritás mellett támogatta a lengyel menekülteket. A Budapesti Közjegyzői Kamara irataiban lengyel közjegyzők segélykérelmei, valamint magyar, német és lengyel nyelvű levelek segítségével ismerhető meg a magyar–lengyel kapcsolatok egy eddig kevéssé ismert mozzanata. A levelek további információkkal szolgálnak a lengyel menekülteket befogadó magyarországi táborokra vonatkozóan is.
