Abstract:
AbstractThis article is a retelling of the Sharr Bubba Jihad as it unfolded in Kajoor (present-day Senegal) in which I attempt to set aright an instance of ontological violence in the existing secondary literature. I attempt to correct this first through an exposition of how the prevailing academic history is complicit in the continual colonization of African history. Secondly, I explain how Eurocentric discourses relegate African women to ancillary bearers of children, hewers of wood, and drawers of water. I further explain that the relationships between gender and authority in African histories do not align with the European “template” explaining the position and role of lingeer. Thirdly, I give the details of the Sharr Bubba Jihad in Kajoor through a rereading of the sources, making sure to name Lingeer Yacine Bubu, and contextualizing the role of the lingeer in Kajoor and the other Senegambian kingdoms.

Abstract:
Following the late fifteenth- and sixteenth-century cavalry revolution in Senegambia, the horse and slave trade became a major sector of the desert-edge political economy. Black African states imported horses from North Africa and the western Sahara in exchange for slaves. Over time, under conditions of increasing aridity, the zone of desert horse-breeding was pushed south, and through crossbreeding with the small disease-resistant indigenous horses of the savanna, new breeds were created. Although the savanna remained an epidemiologically hostile environment for the larger and more desirable horses bred in North Africa, in the high desert and along the desert fringe, Black African states continued to import horses in exchange for slaves into the period of French colonial rule. The evidence assembled on the horse trade into northern Senegambia raises the difficult issue of the relative quantitative importance of the Atlantic and Saharan/North African slave trades and calls into question the assumption that the Atlantic slave trade was the larger of the two. Most available evidence concerns the Wolof kingdoms of Waalo and Kajoor. It suggests that the volume of slaves exported north into the desert from Waalo in the late seventeenth century was probably at least ten times as great as the volume of slaves exported into the Atlantic slave trade. For both Waalo and Kajoor, this ratio declined during the first half of the eighteenth century as slave exports into the Atlantic markets increased. The second half of the eighteenth century saw an increase in predatory raiding from the desert which produced an additional flow of north-bound slaves. For Waalo and Kajoor – and probably for the other Black African states of northern Senegambia – the flow of slaves north to Saharan and North African markets probably remained the larger of the two export volumes over the eighteenth century. This northward flow of slaves continued strong after the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade and was only shut down with the imposition of French colonial authority.

Abstract:
According to some traditional cosmological beliefs in Senegambia, the spirits of the dead evolve in an alternative world and are given the responsibility of ruling that of the living. The main function of the religious phenomenon is to give life a meaning by overcoming uncertainties and reducing existential anxiety in the face of a tricky and often hostile nature. The direct or indirect hold of the sacred over activities sets essentialist concepts and practices perpetuated through a ritualization necessary for the survival of the intangible cultural heritage of oral societies. The ritual practice has established itself as the main process for the conservation of the intangible cultural heritage of the Ajoor. Expressions and representations are often wrapped in a supernatural and / or symbolic substrate on which theoretical, moral, technical and religious achievements are based. The civilizational influences received on both sides have generated a form of cultural hybridization with spatial slight differences in the way of practicing ancestral animist beliefs. It goes without saying that the main purpose of studying the past of communities should be a better understanding of the present with a view to preparing for a possible prosperous future, in a position that takes sustainability into account. By drawing inspiration from the local cultural core, it will be possible to produce a model of citizen able to efficiently deal with the challenges that are contemporary with him. This thesis aims at modeling this argument through the example of the intangible cultural heritage of Kajoor mainly inhabited by Ajoor people

Abstract:
This paper deals with intercultural dialogue between Western culture (Lithuanian) and Eastern culture. We suggest to think of myth as a connection between those two cultures in Donaldas Kajokas’s Novel "Ežeras ir kiti jį lydintys asmenys". The main object of this novel is a lake. It symbolizes the primordial chaos. In the middle of the lake there is an island of divine beauty and enormous energy. In this novel the center of the space is an island. The edges of the lake embody the sections of the mythical world. On one side there is a swamp – the ulterior world. On the other side there is a manor house – the man‘s living place. Manor residents do not change their appearance neither their character. The main character Gabrielius Ašautas changes depends on the time he spends in the manor house. The manor house hostess Augusta is the warden of the world order. She was killed by her kitchener Juta because the last-mentioned wants to stop the creation of the cosmos and to recreate the chaos. There are a lot of unreal creatures in the swamp, so-called anatta. In Buddhism, the term anatta refers to the notion of soulless. Eventually the main character turns into anatta. The main themes in this novel are: an eternity, struggle between chaos and cosmos, and the primordiality of the world.

Abstract:
Vytautas P. Bložė, Donaldas Kajokas and Rabindranath Tagore are well acquainted with indian Vedic mythology, therefore in their poetry they adjust it interestingly and beautifully, by revealing the meanings of different phenomenons, and in this way enriching lithuanian poetry. Most of the attention the poets allot to the moon trop, the relationship between the soul and the Supersoul and the archetype of God Krishna, less attention – to the sacred tree and flower. Kajokas attaches great importance to the moon. Bložė's moon induces spiritual growth and does not allow to yield to material darkness, it is also divine person with limitless world. To Kajokas it is not only the light, destiny, but also God (with moonlike face), who plays the flute, it is the trope of a woman and a child too. And for Tagore the place of the moon takes God Krishna Himself with His moonlike face. Their moon is always acting divine person, what is the characteristic of indian mythology. The motive of the relation between the soul and the Supersoul is very significant to the poets. All three of them lean on the allegory of Vedic scriptures and present this trop as two birds. The bird Supersoul always advises what to do for Her minor to make itself free from low whims, by reviving divine friendship. Tagore's bird is endlessly happy being together with the Lord, Bložė observes these birds and Kajokas' bird is unhappy, because it doesn't heed to the Supersoul. Kajokas' and Tagore's Supersoul and... [to full text]

Abstract:

Denna uppsats behandlar innerstadens kajer i Stockholm.

Abstract:
Darbe pirmiausia aptariamos prielaidos Vakarų ir Rytų kultūrų dialogui rastis. Temos problematika ir galima sklaida pristatoma iš esmės remiantis Carlo G. Jungo ir Martino Heideggerio įžvalgomis, lietuvių kultūros veikėjų mintimis, glaustai pateikiama lietuvių literatūros kritikos recepcija šiuo klausimu, apžvelgiami Donaldo Kajoko autokomentarais suformuluoti jo kūrybos bei gyvenimo vakarietiški ir rytietiški kontekstai. Pagrindinė darbo dalis skirta D. Kajoko kūrybos – eilėraščių ir esė – nagrinėjimui Vakarų-Rytų įtakos aspektu. Pastebėta, kad šių kultūrų sandūros kūrybinis padarinys yra autoriaus tekstuose atsiskleidžiantys gimtosios kalbos resursai. Tai suteikia galimybę minėtame civilizacijų dialoge įžvelgti lietuviškus pėdsakus kaip kūrėjo pa(si)rinktas gramatines formas, stilistinę raišką, poetines figūras. Tampa akivaizdu, jog esė, be citatinių, struktūrinių ir žanrinių paviršiaus žaidimų, priskiriamų vakarietiškam būdui siekti prozininko meistrystės, intelektiniai egzistenciniai ieškojimai, realizuojami mąstant kalbą, savo vidinę tikrovę, liudija nuolatinę kelionę vieningo pasaulio, kaip minėtų kultūrų sintezės, link.
This work discusses assumptions of the emerging West and East cultural dialogue. The topics and possible spread of the theme is presented using the insights of Carl G. Jung and Martin Heidegger, the thoughts of Lithuanian thinkers. The author concisely presents the reception of Lithuanian literary criticism on this question, surveys the Eastern and Western creative and life contexts of Donaldas Kajokas, which he formulated in his auto commentary. The main part of this work is committed to the analysis of D. Kajokas oeuvre – his poems and essays in the aspect of West and East. It is observed, that creative consequence of this cultural junction is unfolding resources of native language. It gives an opportunity to envisage in this civilization dialogue some Lithuanian trails as chosen grammatical forms, stylistic expression, poetical forms. It is obvious, that essay, besides it‘s quotation, structural and genre games, which are attributed to Western way of prose craftsmanship, intellectual and existential pursuance, which is realized in thinking about language and inner reality, testifies the continuous voyage towards unanimous world, towards the synthesis of abovementioned cultures.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the trade relationship between the Senegambian Wolof government and European maritime traders between 1500 and 1800. It analyses the separate approaches each side took during diplomatic relations over the rights to African waterways. It demonstrates that where European states considered Africa a ‘discovery’ and recognised it in terms of possession, monopolies, and exclusive rights over other European nations, Senegambian sovereigns considered the market free, and traded with Europe out of economic interest without willingness to give up dominion of their lands to maritime traders. In particular, it examines the reign of Lat-Sukaabe Faal, king of Kajoor-Bawol between 1696 and 1720, and how he undertook commercial relations with European maritime powers. By analysing how these two economically incompatible cultures interacted over trade, it determines that African leaders used military advantages to protect their interests, and that despite the Eurpoean ‘mastery of the sea’, African nations used their own maritime skills, especially navigation, to maintain control of their waterways and thereby control the terms of trade with Europe.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Benefiting from the theoretical debate between grobalization and glocalization, this chapter aims to shed light on the emerging role of rap music as an alternative venue for political communication in a polarized country, Turkey. The chapter will discuss the political contributions of the selected underground Turkish rappers – Norm Ender, Sagopa Kajmer and Rapzan Belagat – on the public debate in the country about identity, human rights, and other socio-political issues that go beyond the traditional “Kemalist versus Kurdish”, “Kemalist versus Islamist”, and “Islamist versus Kurdish” divide. This study suggests that the Turkish rap and its varieties reflect a complex set of interactions between the local and the global in line with the glocalization approach.

Abstract:
Abstract March 1971. The border security forces have organised a White Flag meeting at the no man's land between India and East Pakistan. People who migrated to the other side of the border in the wake of the 1947 partition are eager to meet their relatives who were left behind. But they only have two hours to meet each other. The Bengali short story "The Sunset" by Sulema Khatun Kajol captures the sea of emotions that flood the minds and lives of villagers on this special day. It focuses on the psychological and social dimensions of the trauma of the Partition. Translated from Bengali by Arzuman Ara

Abstract:
F. Kajzar et al.,1 have previously reported dispersion measurements of only the magnitude of the third order nonlinear susceptibility of polythiophene films. We have performed tunableTFIG measurements in the range of 1 to 2µm on poly(3-butylthiophene) and poly(3-decylthiophene) thin film polymers. Both the magnutide and the phase dispersions of χ(3)(3ω) agree with a three level model. This model indicates the presence of a two-photon state below the first dipole allowed one-photon state. The transition dipole moment between both excited states dominates the dispersion of the magnitude and the phase of χ(3)(3ω) near the three photon resonance.
