Abstract:
The cultivation of ‘cultural literacy’ in students from multicultural backgrounds may occur outside schooling practices in the US due to curricular framing and a lack of interest in integrating cultural education at schools. ‘Cultural literacy’ warrants student participation and requires a conducive learning environment where multiethnic students can seek inspiration through exploration. The San Antonio Writing Project organizes literacy project called the Kahani Project, and it fosters creativeness and facilitates authentic expression of cultural funds of knowledge of Indian American students. Performing arts including dance and music engage Indian students and enable them to learn about their culture, heritage, and religion. The Kahani Project is culturally contextualized writing activity, where Asian Indian American students write about their generational practices that may not addressed in schools in the US. This qualitative study explores two narratives written for the Kahani Project. The study utilized Leiblich et al., holistic content analysis to arrive at themes, categories, and meta categories. The findings revealed Indian students’ willingness to preserve their culture through writing about Indian dance and music. The second inference of this study was that Indian students’ heritage is neglected and excluded in US curriculum.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fourteen species of ginger belonging to Zingiberaceae and Costaceae were evaluated for susceptibility to the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) race 4 (ginger strains) by several methods of inoculation, including tests to simulate natural infection. Twelve of 14 species tested were highly susceptible to all strains of Rs race 4 upon stem inoculation, and susceptible plants wilted within 21 days. In contrast to previous reports that Rs strains from an invasive alien species, kahili ginger (Hedychium gardenarium), are nonpathogenic on ornamental gingers, the kahili ginger strain wilted both ornamental and edible ginger (Zingiber officinale) species within 21 days. Pour inoculation to the base of 11 plant species to simulate natural infection confirmed the ability of Rs to invade all the tested species without root wounds. Shampoo ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) was the most susceptible (wilted in 26 days) whereas pink ginger (Alpinia purpurata) and red ginger (A. purpurata) were the least susceptible and wilted in 71 and 76 days respectively. Pathogen survival in potting medium was evaluated by enumerating viable cells in effluent water from drenched pots with and without infected edible ginger after stem or rhizome inoculation. Ralstonia solanacearum survived in plant-free potting medium for 120 days and for 150 to 180 days in potting medium with infected edible ginger. The ability of Rs race 4 to infect many ginger species without wounding and to survive for long periods indicates that high risks will be incurred if the kahili ginger strain is inadvertently introduced from the forest reserves into ginger production areas.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to assess the impacts of climate change on the surface water resources of the Sassandra catchment area. This study conducted at the scale of the Sassandra sub-catchment areas took into account six (6) sub-catchment areas: Bafing in Badala, Boa in Vialadougou, Davo in Dakpadou, Lobo in Nibehibe, Nzo in Kahin and Sassandra in Semien. The methodological approach is based on the evaluation of the drying up coefficients, the duration of drying up and the volumes of water mobilized by the aquifers. All these parameters were estimated using Maillets law. The analysis of the different dynamics was carried out using the cumulative sums test. The results showed that the breaks in rainfall and the drying up coefficient were between 1982 and 2000, 1985 and 2003 respectively. After these breaks, the drying up coefficients increased (Bafing in Badala, Boa in Vialadougou and Davo in Dakpadou) from 17 to 25.9% and decreased (Lobo in Nibehibe and Nzo in Kahin) from 1.4 to 6.3%. A shortening of 3 to 5 days was observed on the Bafing in Badala, the Boa in Vialadougou and the Davo in Dakpadou. The volumes of water mobilized by the aquifers decreased on the Bafing in Badala, the Davo in Dakpadou and the Sassandra in Semien. While they increased on the Boa in Vialadougou, the Lobo in Nibehibe and the Nzo in Kahin.

Abstract:
ObjectiveThis study aims to measure the prevalence of mental health disorders in low-resource settings through telepsychiatry and evaluate data from Pakistan’s Sehat Kahani nurse-assisted online clinics serving low-income communities. This will help to understand the magnitude and nature of the demand for contextual therapies to promote mental health. The paper will discuss the challenges faced in these settings, such as limited access to mental health facilities, stigma and opportunities telemedicine brings.DesignAn observational cross-sectional study of telepsychiatry consultations using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 to screen for depression and anxiety was conducted between October and December 2022.SettingThis research was conducted at Dadar Mansehra e-health clinics of Sehat Kahani with telepsychiatry services in Pakistan.ParticipantsThe study included 2660 participants who visited Sehat Kahani e-health clinics between October and December 2022 and voluntarily completed the questionnaire for data collection.ResultsThe study was comprised of 2660 participants with a mean age of 34.3 years. The study findings show that the majority of participants were females (98.4%), 16.9% of participants had moderate depression, and 20.8% had severe depression. Furthermore, the participants who were widowed/divorced were more likely to have depression than those who were single (OR=3.3, 95% CI (2.0 to 5.2)).ConclusionsBased on the findings, most study participants were female, and their mental health was negatively impacted. Women in Pakistan are disproportionately affected by the rising rates of depression and anxiety, and telepsychiatry therapies effectively respond to this growing need. Potentially, it is a game-changer for dealing with mental health problems. Telepsychiatry can help policymakers and mental health professionals to develop effective low-income mental health initiatives.

Abstract:
Abstract: This essay engages the thought of US rabbi Meir Kahane (1932–1990), a provocative, militant, and, to many, demonized figure in postwar American Judaism. Among his other interventions in Jewish life in the 1960s and 1970s, Kahane played a major role in the movement for Soviet Jewry that occupied Jews from the early 1960s through the early 1980s when the USSR loosened its restrictions on Jewish emigration. I suggest that, for Kahane, the movement for Soviet Jewry was much more than protesting the unfair treatment of Jews in Soviet Russia. It was, for him, part of a global conflagration between democracy and communism that implicated Jews, Vietnam, Israel, and the Arab world, as well as the US, China, and Russia. Moreover, the US was a fundamental part of Kahane's views on Soviet Jewry; he saw it as the pivotal player in the war against communism, which for him also represented the battle against the erasure of religious freedom and proved crucial for the support of Israel against its Arab enemies. I begin by briefly introducing Kahane, his relationship to the US and religion, and then develop his complicated views on Soviet Jewry and the US's role in saving Jews in the Soviet Union.

Abstract:
This article deals with Rabbi Meir Kahane’s assimilation doctrine, an under-studied aspect of previous published research on Kahane. The present study suggests that this doctrine is catalysed by a palingenetic myth of decline and rebirth, which also catalyses Kahane’s ideology. By proposing this, this article aims to offer a new perspective on the understanding of what drives Kahane’s ideology. It is further suggested that Kahane’s palingenetic myth is in part built around a myth of ‘intraracial antagonism’ between the American Jewish Establishment (AJE) and the ‘common Jew’. Following Bruce Lincoln’s theory of myth, it is here contended that Kahane’s assimilation doctrine is presented as ‘ideology in narrative form’. The study surveys the alleged causes and effects of assimilation, and what solutions Kahane presents to put an end to it. Among the alleged causes, Kahane singles out the AJE’s purported gutting of Jewish religious education, which is said to have alienated Jewish youth from their religion. Aside from curtailing Jewish continuity, Kahane for example identifies Jews engaging in social causes that allegedly run counter to Jewish interests as one alleged effect of assimilation. To end assimilation Kahane promotes a solution of campaigning in Jewish communities to ultimately put a stop to intermarriage, to instil hadar and ahavat Yisroel among Jews by the means of a regenerated Jewish educational system, and to encourage Jews to ‘return’ to Israel.

We review the celebrated Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko and Kowalski-Slodkowski theorems from the setting of associative Banach algebras to the wider class of nonassociative Jordan Banach algebras. We introduce the notion of almost multiplicative linear functionals in Jordan Banach algebras and prove a theorem extending a former result of B.E. Johnson for Banach algebras by employing the more recent concept of condition spectrum. We show how to rediscover the Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko theorem for Jordan Banach algebras from the corresponding version for almost multiplicative linear functionals.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article discusses the role of colonial oppression in creating conflicting perspectives in the reproduction of dance as Indigenous cultural heritage. The debate on kahiko, the ancient Hawaiian dance, of which practice was severely controlled and then revived through the cultural renaissance, demonstrates that the radical deprivation of the practice has created multiple understandings of the dance among different practitioners. Of primary importance in these respects is the intergenerational divide within the dance community, manifest in the critical perspective of the post-renaissance variant of kahiko, which highlights the “continuity” of the practice through the colonial rupture.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to (1) describe how the reception of the author in involving the story of Ahlul Kahfi in his work entitled Ashabul Kahfi; and (2) find the intertextual relationship between the playwright and the Quran text and its interpretation as hipogram. The approach used in this study was reception/transformation. The analysis was conducted by comparing, aligning, and contrasting the drama text, Ahlul Kahfi and the Quran as hipogram. The results shows that the playwright, Ahlul Kahfi is the absorption, copying, enovation, and transformation from the Quran. There is a close relation between the story of Ashabul Kahfi and Ahlul Kahfi as the work of innovation and transformation. Ahlul Kahfi arise drama appearance was initiated by the story of Ashabul Kahfi.

Abstract:
The behavior at infinity of the Fourier transform of the random measures that appear in the theory of multiplicative chaos of Mandelbrot, Peyrière, and Kahane is an area quite unexplored. For context and further reference, we first present an overview of this theory and then the result, which is the main objective of this work, generalizing a result previously announced by Kahane. We establish an estimate for the asymptotic behavior of the second moment of the Fourier transform of the limit random measure in the theory of multiplicative chaos. After looking at the behavior at infinity of the Fourier transform of some remarkable functions and measures, we prove a formula essentially due to Frostman, involving the Riesz kernels.

Peel, David. "Subjective Skewness of Return as an Explanation of the Optimal Choice between Gambles in Cumulative Prospect Theory." Journal of Gambling Business and Economics 2, no. 2 (January 2, 2013): 97–108. http://dx.doi.org/10.5750/jgbe.v2i2.533.

Full text
Abstract:
Given that the expected return and variance of return of two gambles are equal the hypothesis that the gamble with the greater positive skewness of return will be chosen by an expected utility maximiser is appealing. However the hypothesis is not, in general, correct. Brockett and Garven (1998) and Brocket and Kahane (1992) demonstrate this both theoretically and by constructing counter examples.A particularly revealing example is the following one constructed by Brockett and Kahane. Gamble A has the two outcomes 2.45 and 7.49 with probabilities 0.5141 and 0.4859 respectively. Gamble B has the three outcomes 0, 4.947 and 10 with probabilities 0.12096, 0.750085 and 0.128955 respectively. Even though gamble A exhibits lower expected return, a higher variance and lower positive skewness than gamble B it is preferred to gamble B by an expected utility maximiser on the basis of any standard utility function such as power, log or exponential. Consequently in this example of theirs the expected utility maximiser exhibits an aversion to higher expected return and higher skewness and a preference for higher variance. As noted by Brockett and Kahane these results cannot be dismissed as decision makers “trading” variance for mean or skewness or having a strange idiosyncratic utility function.
