Abstract:
This thesis contributes to examining how and why coal continues to dominate global energy mix despite old and new socio-ecological concerns and how and why is it contested, using environment and climate justice narratives. Although coal continues to reign in the global energy mix, the patterns of global coal trade are shifting. India is primed to play a leading role in the near future as coal production, consumption and trade encompasses new geographies in the Global South. At the same time, India is also leading the transition towards renewables globally. I first explore this paradox by looking at social metabolic patterns and political ecological factors and argue that the energy transition is in-fact towards more coal despite a renewables-led rhetoric. I then explore how this is being facilitated with the creation of a new coastal geography, in parallel to the older coal geographies. This is followed by an exploration of how this rise in coal is being contested, and how are the protests being shaped in regions with marginalized populations with pre-existing inequalities. I argue for the need of decolonial environmental justice scholarship to unpack how the multiple forms of violence interact and perpetuate environmental injustices by what I term procedural violence. Finally, I examine the multiple ways in which coal protests from across the world which employ a climate justice narrative are connected. I explore 61 cases of resistance and draw three broad types of classifications about the connections. I argue for the need of decolonial climate justice movements which adheres to local concerns and doesn’t push for a global top-down narrative, by providing two examples from India where such approach does more harm than good to a movement. The thesis is based on a mixed-methods approach, focusing on transdisciplinary, co-produced research, and mobilizes concepts from the three interconnected disciplines of political ecology, environmental justice and ecological economics.

Abstract:
The building is searching for the site’s existing landscape with it’s forests and an existing hidden glade that becomes the core of the project. The school is a place which is meant to be discovered step by step, in order to increase the creativity. And it acts like a heart, where the circle becomes a symbol for interaction and movement through the parts of the programme and the surroundings.  The building has its heart where the existing glade  exists. There are the smaller children, the kindergarden and the dining room which are directed outward.  A new , bigger glade is built for the children from the upper classes. This acts also as a social act between the society and the school. The big circle activates the place and takes the  children through all parts of the program. There will be an challenging investigation to move from the classrooms to the dining room and then to the school garden or the  workshops.  The classrooms take an articulated form that also encourages the idea of that  everyone should find her/his own place and provides a place for everyone. The workshops which are located on the ground floor open up to room where they can extend to the exterior  and where the children can work and have acces to the outside and where they can be seen and appreciated.

Brown, Matthew Allen. "On the Use of Arnoldi and Golub-Kahan Bases to Solve Nonsymmetric Ill-Posed Inverse Problems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/51546.

Full text
Abstract:
Iterative Krylov subspace methods have proven to be efficient tools for solving linear systems of equations. In the context of ill-posed inverse problems, they tend to exhibit semiconvergence behavior making it difficult detect ``inverted noise" and stop iterations before solutions become contaminated. Regularization methods such as spectral filtering methods use the singular value decomposition (SVD) and are effective at filtering inverted noise from solutions, but are computationally prohibitive on large problems. Hybrid methods apply regularization techniques to the smaller ``projected problem" that is inherent to iterative Krylov methods at each iteration, thereby overcoming the semiconvergence behavior. Commonly, the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization is used to construct a set of orthonormal basis vectors that span the Krylov subspaces from which solutions will be chosen, but seeking a solution in the orthonormal basis generated by the Arnoldi process (which is fundamental to the popular iterative method GMRES) has been of renewed interest recently. We discuss some of the positive and negative aspects of each process and use example problems to examine some qualities of the bases they produce. Computing optimal solutions in a given basis gives some insight into the performance of the corresponding iterative methods and how hybrid methods can contribute.

Zeraoui, Nahla.

Full text
Abstract:
Several heroines knew how to change the fate of humanity, among them the Kahena. This queen reminds people of the perpetual fight of woman. Her fight which fascinated many since her distant time is still captivating. She was the last queen who managed to unite the Berber people, thus representing the resistance against the new conqueror of Africa, the Arab. Historians made of her a heroic figure and writers considered her as a mythical figure. This research work, through its three parts, attempts to emphasize the literary importance of this social and political dimension of the Kahena. In the first part, it recounts all the conquests that preceded the Arab invasion in Africa, the episode which conjures up its main character. In its second part, it goes from historical to literary style in order to highlight the different status of the Kahena in many novelistic texts. The image of the queen was alternately in accordance with tradition and at odds with it. Each author adapts his writing to his characters as well as to his readers. As far as the third part is concerned, it is dedicated to a comparative study with two other mythical and historical figures, Joan of Arc and Cleopatra as well as the evolution of their myth in literature. This study enables us to refer to the various pictures of the Kahena. In spite of cultural difference, the character keeps his heroic, imposing and symbolic status, modelled or embellished according to novelistic imaginary or the requirement of the age. He becomes a myth, remains alive and acquires literary treasures thanks to his updating, which meets many contemporary needs

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1993.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 96-98).
This thesis addresses the published writing, lectures and interviews of Louis I. Kahn between 1931 and 1974. It attempts to map the elaboration and unfolding of meaning that occur in four of his major concepts: Form and Design, realization, expression and Silence and Light. His textual production is aimed at trying to understand the nature of architecture and its beginnings. This interest leads him into ever widening fields of inquiry into the nature of nature, the nature of man and the nature of beginnings. Most of his concepts can be reduced to a polarity of the measurable and the unmeasurable. His thinking to has two distinct phases: in the first period, 1931 to 1960, he focuses on the tangible concerns of the nature of architecture; in the second phase, from 1960 to 1974, he investigates its more spiritual aspect. The premise of the thesis is that Kahn's writing is cryptic only insofar as one does not understand his particular meanings and definitions for words. The paper traces the continual transformation of specific concepts and their meaning and shows their remarkable consistency. It also demonstrates how Kahn achieves clarity through a strategy of differentiation. Kahn's underlying motivation is to understand the unmeasurable so that he can embody a sense of the eternal in his architecture.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relationship between architecture, Romanticism, American Transcendentalism, myth, and religious mysticism in the ideas of the American architect, Louis Kahn. Part One builds a chronology from Hermeticism and Jewish mysticisms into German Romanticism and how they played a role in the world of Kahnâ s parents shortly before his birth. The first chapter looks at mysticism and how it resonates with Kahnâ s descriptions of silence and light. The second chapter outlines the transition from rational aesthetics during the German Enlightenment into German Romanticism. This exposes the beginning of organicism as a way of seeing the world as a growth from a mythic image towards a physical manifestation made by artists and poets. In chapter three, the ideas from Romanticism inspire a philosophical and political movement for independence and cultural expression in the native region of Kahnâ s parents. Part Two concentrates on the American approach to Romanticism via Transcendentalism and how Transcendentalism influenced Kahnâ s childhood education in Philadelphia. It shows how the ideas of German Romanticism influenced English literature and criticism, especially Coleridgeâ s theories of organicism and literary criticism. Chapter four presents how the American Transcendentalists correlated the mind and imagination to an organism. In chapter five, we see how Transcendentalismâ s aesthetic theory influenced the Public Industrial Arts School of Philadelphiaâ s approach to teaching art. Louis Kahn attended this school. The final chapter deciphers Kahnâ s ideas, such as â form and design,â â material as spent light,â â measurable and unmeasurable,â â law and rule,â â order,â and â nature.â Within the framework of Romanticism and American Transcendentalism, these ideas become intelligible and an enriching approach to understand his architecture.

Abstract:
The problem of any political system is that the principles which underlie and characterize it might also, through their application, endanger it and bring about its destruction. Democracy is no exception. Moreover, because democracy is a relatively young phenomenon, it lacks experience in dealing with pitfalls involved in the working of the system. This is what I call the "catch" of democracy. The primary aims of this research are (1) to formulate percepts and mechanisms designed to prescribe boundaries to liberty and tolerance conducive to safeguard democracy; and (2) in the light of the theory to analyze a case of a democratic selfdefence. Hence, I employ the formulated philosophical principles to the study of the Israeli democracy, evaluating the political and legal measures to which it resorted in its struggle against Kahanism. In the first part of the thesis I examine two of the main arguments which are commonly offered as answers to the question: 'why tolerate?' The first is the 'Respect for Others Argument', and the second is the 'Argument from Truth'. I introduce some qualifications to these arguments, asserting that our primary obligation should be given to the first, and that in case of conflict between the two principles, this former principle should have preference over the latter. Through the review of the Millian theory and some more recent theories I try to prescribe confines to liberty. With regard to freedom of expression, I state two arguments: the first under the Harm Principle, and the second under the Offence Principle. Under the Harm Principle I argue that restrictions on liberty may be prescribed when there are sheer threats of immediate violence against some individuals or groups. Under the Offence Principle I explicate that expressions which intend to inflict psychological offence are morally on a par with physical harm and therefore there are grounds for abridging them. In this connection, I review the Illinois Supreme Court decision, which permitted the Nazis to hold a demonstration in Skokie. Moving from theory to practice, in the second part I apply the theory and the conclusions reached to the Israeli democracy, observing its struggle against the Kahanist phenomenon as it has been developed through the last two decades, and increasingly following the election of Meir Kahane to the Knesset in 1984. I examine the mechanisms applied in this anti-'Kach' (Kahane's party) campaign, the justifications given for the limitations that were set, and how justified they were, according to the formulated philosophical and legal guidelines.

Garrison, Geoffrey Hjorth. "Holocene sedimentary and aquatic biogeochemical responses reflected in Ordy Pond, Oahʻu, Hawai'i, and, contemporary modeling of submarine groundwater discharge in Kahana Bay, Oahʻu, Hawaiʻi." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/3021.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores aquatic geochemistry in two settings on O'ahu. Ordy Pond biogeochemistry responds rapidly to environmental changes, while Kahana Bay is influenced by significant groundwater and surface water influx and mixing with coastal ocean water. Thus, Ordy Pond is a better tool for studying Oahu's paleoenvironments, and Kahana Bay demonstrates the applicability of natural chemical tracers to quantify submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Work in Ordy Pond consisted of modern water column and particulate production time-series analyses, and sediment core study. Air temperature changes appeared to control the seasonal water chemistry. When the pond was thermally stratified in the spring/summer, epilimnion primary productivity increased dramatically as indicated by dissolved O2, dissolved inorganic carbon, S13CDIC, and particulate production rates. Once the density gradient waned, the anoxic hypolimnion mixed with the epilimnion, organic matter productivity fell, and surface waters became suboxic to anoxic. Primary productivity is believed to have been controlled by the availability of sunlight; the longer daily photoperiod during stratification resulted in greater organic matter production, while greater mixing in winter reduced the photoperiod, increased phytoplankton respiration, and reduced organic matter production. The carbonate mineral flux increased during elevated primary productivity due to increased carbonate mineral saturation states. Modern particulate production closely reflected the water chemistry, and the biogeochemical processes in the modern pond were used to interpret the Holocene environmental history of the area through analysis of pond sediments. The sediments revealed three dramatic paleoenvironmental events: 1) the most recent post-glacial sea level rise around Oʻahu ~ 9.7 kya; 2) sea level fall ~1 kya following Oahu's mid Holocene Sea level high stand; and 3) Western human contact with O'ahu and the introduction of plantation-scale agriculture. Finally, in a separate study of the submarine ground water discharge to Oahu's coastal waters, Kahana Bay was found to experience a much greater exchange with the surrounding environment than Ordy Pound. Total SGD in Kahana Bay is significant (90 x 106 L d-1), providing 16% as much terrestrial water, five times as much phosphorus, and two times as much nitrogen as surface water runoff.

Abstract:
This study shows new restoration concepts about interventions and construction materials used in historical monuments. The study views the specific case of Kahal Zur Israel (first synagogue of the Americas), and what exactly motivated the restoration of this monument. Some questions considered were: which was the historical context of the time? What was the history of the monument in itself? Which were the intervention criteria adopted, based on the newest theories, while at the same time preserving some of the present recommendations of the heritage letters? The study also described some of the archaeological discoveries that were carried out with the objective of gathering information to best execute the restoration project. The intervention tried to adapt the present necessities of the locale, preserve its historical value, and promote its financial self-sustainability. The procedure included considerations done on other monuments where modern materials were used so that contemporary uses could be adapted (commerce, tourism, services, communications and environmental comfort). At the same time the preservation of the cultural values of the historical center was observed. Moreover, the procedures show and differentiate the modern materials from the old, avoiding a false representation of the historical and artistic value of the locale. A good example of this at Kahal Zur Israel, is the complementary annexed bloc, situated in the depths of the synagogue. In general, modern building materials give a new sense of intervention to the monuments.

In this dissertation we develop a rst contact with the theory of Banach Algebras and C*-algebras. As usual of a rst contact, we build the Spectral Theory in Banach algebras with unit. We present the characterization theorems of C *-algebras of Gelfand-Naimark and Gelfand-Naimark-Segal, including the GNS construction. Moreover, we prove a theorem which characterizes all complex homomorphisms in the C*-algebra C(X), as point-evaluation homomorphisms. We also present, as a curiosity, a proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra using the Gelfand-Mazur Theorem. As a prerequisite to the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal's characterization of C *-algebras, we further develop, in the background, the theory of the direct sum of any family of Hilbert spaces. .

Abstract:
Louis I. Kahn - Architectural History as Mediation investigates the work of one of the most active architects of the 20th century who has been acknowledged by scholars as a modern thinker and architect, but is also known for his interest in history, and the clear references to historical precedents in his work. In studying Kahn's architectural training, writings, readings, travel experience, personal contacts, the context in which he practiced, and through investigating his personal drawings and two of his design projects, Kahn's layered approach to architectural history is unveiled. In describing the architectural context of Kahn's education and work, this thesis deals with important aspects of architectural thought and making, which Kahn was exposed to, and sheds light on the motivation behind Kahn's unique philosophical quest. When investigating Kahn's drawings done during his travelling experiences, the manner in which he embodied historical sites becomes apparent. Studying archival material it tracks Kahn's studies of architectural references, and analyzing his architectural drawings and designs for the Dominican Motherhouse of St. Catherine de Ricci, Media, Pennsylvania (1965-1969, un-built) and the Hurva Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem (1967-1974, un-built) it exemplifies the poetic references made by his projects to historical precedents - all while concentrating on hermeneutic and phenomenological concepts relating to perception, memory and understanding of the past. Thus, through Kahn, this dissertation addresses the contextual debate regarding the use of historical references in modern architecture from the 18th century up until the postmodern era, and deals with the importance of continuity of references in the age of fragmentation. Louis I. Kahn - Architectural History as Mediation reveals the possible intricate potential lying in the consideration of tradition and history in modern architecture, and sheds light on suitable endeavors in architectural thought and making which at once integrate historical references and promote originality and progress - both fundamental for innovative poetic architectural expressions.

Abstract:
This dissertation approaches the view of history embedded in the method of future speculation and planning set out in the book The year 2000, written in 1967, by Herman Kahn and Anthony J. Wiener. This work consists in investigating the ideas and concepts in the method, as well as in overall results of future speculation and planning, in order to expose the influences of other authors, ideas and concepts and the various contexts articulated in the book. We here try to show how the futurist thinking of Kahn and Wiener understood history, namely, a view of progress however no longer linear or a product of a reason inherent to man, but a progress achieved every moment by human effort in planning the future. Thus, history appears as a macro-historical development that explains past developments and future possibilities, and also as a set of heuristic examples to consider how future possibilities can manifest factually. The research concludes that futurist thinking is a valuable study object to historians for its appropriation of history, for its importance as a historical phenomenon and for its significance as part of the contemporary life.
