Abstract. Peroxynitric acid uptake to ice and snow has been proposed to be a major loss process from the atmosphere with impacts on the atmospheric oxidation capacity. Here we present results from a laboratory study on the interaction of peroxynitric acid with water ice at low concentrations. Experiments were performed in a coated wall flow tube at atmospheric pressure and in the environmentally relevant temperature range of 230 K to 253 K. The interaction was found to be fully reversible and decomposition was not observed. Analysis based on the Langmuir adsorption model showed that the partitioning of peroxynitric acid to ice is orders of magnitude lower than of nitric acid and similar to nitrous acid partitioning behavior. The partition coefficient (KLinC) and its temperature dependency can be described by 3.74×10−12×e(7098/T) [cm]. Atmospheric implications are discussed and show that the uptake to cirrus clouds or to snow-packs in polar areas is an important sink for peroxynitric acid in the environment.

Abstract:
Abstract. The ozonolysis of α-pinene has been investigated under dry and humid conditions in the temperature range of 243–303 K. The results provided new insight into the role of water and temperature in the degradation mechanism of α-pinene and in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The SOA yields were higher at humid conditions than at dry conditions. The water induced gain was largest for the lowest temperatures investigated (243 and 253 K). The increase in the SOA yields was dominated by water (and temperature) effects on the organic product distribution, whilst physical uptake of water was negligible. This will be demonstrated for the example of pinonaldehyde (PA) which was formed as a~major product in the humid experiments with total molar yields of 0.30±0.06 at 303 K and 0.15±0.03 at 243 K. In the dry experiments the molar yields of PA were only 0.07±0.02 at 303 K and 0.02±0.02 at 253 K. The observed partitioning of PA as a function of the SOA mass present at 303 K limited the effective vapour pressure of pure PA pPA0 to the range of 0.01–0.001 Pa, 3–4 orders of magnitude lower than literature values. The corresponding mass partitioning coefficient was determined to KPA=0.005±0.004 m3/μg and the total mass yield αPA.total=0.37±0.08. At 303 K PA preferably stayed in the gas-phase, whereas at 253 K and 243 K it exclusively partitioned into the particulate phase. PA could thus account at least for half of the water induced gain in SOA mass at 253 K. The corresponding effect was negligible at 303 K because the PA preferably remained in the gas-phase. The yield of OH radicals, which were produced in the ozonolysis, was indirectly determined by means of the yield of cyclohexanone formed in the reaction of OH radicals with cyclohexane. OH yields of the α-pinene ozonolysis were determined to 0.67±0.17 for humid and 0.54±0.13 for dry conditions at 303 K, indicating a water dependent path of OH radical formation. For 253 and 243 K OH yields could be estimated to 0.5 with no significant difference between the dry and humid experiments. This is the first clear indication for OH radical formation by α-pinene ozonolysis at such low temperatures.

Abstract:
Crystallographic analyses at 100 and 200 K are reported for the macrobicyclic polyether 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diaza-bicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane (denoted as 222-cryptand) that encapsulates a Li+ cation and then forms a complex (I) with ClO_4^-. Compound (I) undergoes a reversible second-order k phase transition at 253 (2) K from an almost ordered structure [space group P212121] at 100 K to a more disordered structure that exhibits a different unit cell [P21212 (2c′ = c)] above 253 (2) K. At 295 K the Li+ cation and five atoms of the perchlorate anion are each disordered over at least two positions about a crystallographic twofold axis [Chekhlov (2003). Russ. J. Coord. Chem. 29, 828–832]; as the temperature decreases the dynamic positional disorder is slowly frozen out, but is still observed for lithium even at 100 K. Based upon DFT computations, it seems that in the solid state the position of the Li+ cation in the cavity of the 222-cryptand below 253 (2) K likely corresponds to a local energy minimum; the global minimum in the gas phase corresponds to a near D 3 symmetrical conformation of the 222-cryptand with the undersized Li+ cation residing in the center of its cavity.

Abstract:
The temperature dependence in the 119Sn Mössbauer spectral area for {(CH3)2NH2}2SnCl6 was found to be almost linear, although a phase transition of the complex has been suggested by IR, 35Cl NQR and NMRstudies, while an anomaly in the temperature dependence for {(CH3)2NH2}2SnBr6 was found at 235 K, which is close to the phase transition temperature 253 K determined by 89Br NQR. These differences are attributable to molecular motion of the dimethylammonium ion in the complexes. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern of {(CH3)2NH2}2SnCl6 did not change near the phase transition point, but that of {(CH3)2NH2}2SnBr6 changed at 108 - 123 K and 233 - 253 K

Abstract:
The transfermium nucleus No-254 (Z = 102, N = 152) has been studied in a recoil-decay tagging experiment using the SAGE in-beam spectrometer, RITU gas-filled separator and GREAT focal-plane spectrometer at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä (JYFL). Both γ rays and conversion electrons from the ground-state band of No-254 have been observed with SAGE. Coincidences between them can be seen and it is possible to measure internal conversion coefficients for some transitions in the band. This shows that they have E2 multipolarity, as expected for a rotational band built on a Kπ = 0+ state. The two previously identified K isomers in No-254 have also been seen. In the prompt data tagged on the slow isomer’s decay the prominent 605 keV transition from previous decay spectroscopy experiments is not seen with the expected intensity. This allows one of the previously proposed level schemes to be ruled out. It is possible that this transition is not seen in the in-beam data at all and the peak at this energy is entirely from inelastic neutron scattering reactions within the SAGE germanium detectors. If this is the case the 605 keV transition could directly depopulate the fast isomer into a band built on the slow isomer without any intermediate structure. There is not enough data to measure γ-ray branching ratios in the band built on the slow isomer so a new method has been developed to determine the single-particle structure of the isomer by comparing the in-beam conversion-electron spectrum above it with Geant4 simulations of the same level scheme with a varying single-particle g factor. This suggests that the structure of the slow isomer is the 7/2+[624]ν ⊗ 9/2-[734]ν two-neutron state.

A need exists for small, robust, and efficient cryocoolers operating in the 25-100 K range; however, while technological advances have enabled the development of such machines, a greater understanding of the losses affecting their performance is needed to make informed design tradeoffs. This thesis takes steps to provide this understanding by examining several losses in the context of a multi-stage cryocooler being developed by MIT and Advanced Mechanical Technologies, Inc. Based on a modular Collins-type design, this cryocooler will use computer-controlled floating piston expanders to simultaneously provide 20 and 100 Watts of cooling at 25 and 100 K, respectively. The contributions in this thesis can be divided into two broad categories. The first is concerned with the systems-level efficiency of the cryocooler, and addresses a significant inefficiency caused by an inherent cooler-to-load temperature mismatch. By using an alternative cryocooler configuration with multiple expanders in series, the overall efficiency may be increased by an estimated 24%. A simple memorizable heuristic was also found to estimate the magnitude of the mismatch loss in a given stage of the cryocooler: the fractional increase in operating power is approximately the base-10 logarithm of the pressure ratio divided by twice the number of series expanders, assuming a monatomic working fluid. The second area of research focused on the design of the cryocooler's unique floating piston expanders. A variety of losses affect the performance of these expanders; these range from the obvious to the obscure (e.g., the enhanced "shuttle" heat transfer that arises from reciprocating piston motion) and often favor conflicting design choices. Eleven such losses are discussed along with both existing literature and a new analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in the piston-cylinder gap. A numerical model incorporating six of these losses was used to gain considerable insight into the design tradeoffs involved in expander design and provide preliminary support for the multi-expander designs discussed earlier. The simulations also challenged a previous design guideline for the piston's stroke length and, unexpectedly, revealed that imperfect expansion and compression can yield a net increase in expander efficiency due to the importance of shuttle heat transfer.

Oxygen is observed to adsorb molecularly on 0.13 - 0.27 ML Au/Ni(1 111) surface alloys at 77 K, in stark contrast to dissociative adsorption on Ni and no adsorption on Au surfaces. Molecular 02 adsorbates on the Au/Ni(111) surface alloy are identified by their 0=0 vibrational modes at 790, 850 and 950 cm-', measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy. Possible Ni adsorption sites for the three types of molecularly adsorbed 02 are proposed. The dramatic change in Ni reactivity occurs within a narrow Au coverage range around 0.13 ML Au and arises from poorer overlap between the Ni d-band and the 02 LUMO as the Ni d-band shifts to lower energy with increasing Au content of the Au/Ni surface alloy. The amount of molecular adsorption as a function of Au coverage cannot be described by an analytical or simulated model based on Au atom proximity to Ni sites, suggesting the role of cooperative effects in 02 stabilization. Adsorbed molecular 02 dissociates between 110 to 150 K. No oxygen desorbs. At Au coverages greater than 0.27 ML, the energy of the Ni d-band is shifted sufficiently low to destabilize oxygen adsorption.
(cont.) Carbon monoxide is catalytically oxidized on the Au/Ni(111) surface alloy at 70 and 77 K via a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. Molecularly adsorbed 02 is identified as the reactant with adsorbed CO. The reaction probability at 77 K is 0.4. Atomically adsorbed O and CO do not react at 77 or 300 K. Between 108 and 125 K, CO reacts with either atomic O adsorbed on Au atoms or with molecularly adsorbed 02. Between 125-150 K, CO2 production coincides with 02 dissociation, suggesting a "hot atom" mechanism. The reactive potential energy surfaces likely have a late transition state. This work demonstrates that the nanoscale size of Au clusters and its associated quantum size effect are not the necessary feature that enables Au-catalyzed low temperature CO oxidation. Rather, this work strongly suggests that an adsorbed 02 species similarly stabilized at the perimeter of Au nanoparticles is the critical reactant in supported oxide systems.

Abstract:
The Swedish Textile industry has since the beginning of the 70-ties moved their production to countries with cheap labour further and further away. The production in the Baltic countries and Asia has become reality for many Swedish manufacturing companies. With today’s technology the communication with remote countries has ceased to be a problem. The difficulties have instead turned out to be more focused on transportation of goods and just in time deliveries to Sweden. In cooperation with Fristads AB we have made a study of Fristads AB´s flow of merchandise and their surrounding logistics. Our focus has mainly been on the production in Vietnam. The purpose with our study has been to clarify which important parts Fristads AB must include in their flow of materials and choices of suppliers, to be able to create an even more efficient supply chain. An effectiveness that will make Fristads AB maintain their leading position on the market. Fristads AB`s expressed ambition was that their producer in Vietnam would take over the responsible for purchase and stock keeping of the accessories. The scientific approach of the study has mainly been qualitative and we have performed several interviews with key figures within Fristads AB. We have also carried out a field study at Fristads AB’s warehouse of raw materials and productions unit at Jurkalnes in Riga, Latvia. In our theoretic frame of references we have chosen theories of Arjan J. Van Weele, Michael Porter, Ralf Blomqvist, Stig-Arne Mattsson and Peter Kraljic. The different theories discuss business logistics, effectiveness in supply chains, chain of values and strategies of choosing suppliers.1We rather quickly realized the complexity of the company and the ways they handled their raw materials. This partly because Fristads AB has many different articles, but also because they are a member of a larger organisation where many decision are made centrally. During our study we kept coming back to the fact that the absence of an integrated business system caused unnecessary redundant work of many documents. In our analysing part we compare our empiric material with our theoretic frame of reference. Our conclusions and recommendations to Fristads AB were that they should develop an even closer cooperation with their suppliers and producers, to maintain their strong position at the market. Further more we found out that an integrated business system, where all involved parties are integrated, are necessary for Fristads AB to create an effective supply chain.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the paper we propose a method for representation of documents in a semantic lower-dimensional space based on the modified Reduced k-means method which penalizes clusterings that are distant from classification of training documents given by experts. Reduced k-means (RKM) enables simultaneously clustering of documents and extraction of factors. By projection of documents represented in the vector space model on extracted factors, documents are clustered in the semantic space in a semi-supervised way (using penalization) because clustering is guided by classification given by experts, which enables improvement of classification performance of test documents. Classification performance is tested for classification by logistic regression and support vector machines (SVMs) for classes of Reuters-21578 data set. It is shown that representation of documents by the RKM method with penalization improves the average precision of classification by SVMs for the 25 largest classes of Reuters collection for about 5,5% with the same level of average recall in comparison to the basic representation in the vector space model. In the case of classification by logistic regression, representation by the RKM with penalization improves average recall for about 1% in comparison to the basic representation.

AbstractOlder toric calculators were limited by the use of the keratometric astigmatism (with no information about posterior corneal curvature) and the adoption of a fixed ratio between the cylinder at the IOL plane and the cylinder at the corneal plane. A discussion about these issues that have been solved by newer calculators is provided along with a brief introduction to the influence of IOL tilt on the refractive outcomes of toric IOLs. The Abulafia-Koch, Barrett, Barrett True-K, EVO, Goggin, Holladay, Johnson & Johnson, Kane, Næser-Savini, Rayner, and Zeiss toric calculators are described. According to the published studies, the percentage of eyes with an absolute prediction error of the cylinder within 0.50 D ranges between 55 and 79% with calculators estimating Total Corneal Astigmatism (TCA), whereas it is close to 40% with calculators using measured TCA and around 25–30% with calculators using Keratometric Astigmatism (KA).

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we explore one aspect of the Anthropocene, the vital, vibrant connections between life and matter (Whatmore, Cultural Geographies 13(4):600–609, 2006.). Drawing on the effectivity of water as a solution and the “Flint water crisis,” we explore how humans tend not to notice matter unless it brings an effect upon them. Our approach follows Melinda Benson, (Natural Resources Journal 59:251–280, 2019) in seeking to decenter human exceptionalism and explore the chemical and biological actors relationally engaged in a system with humans engendering phenomena that are unpredictable as we demonstrate in a case study of the City of Flint and its access to drinking water for humans. As this case highlights, often matter only becomes noticed when it establishes an ontological disturbance forcing itself on human experience and becoming noticed in the process. Important elements of such “noticing” are tied up with the human-material intra-actions engendering phenomena that is shaped by race and geographic history. Rather than constructing Flint and other examples as emergencies or crises that need to be solved, education should explore the dynamic nature of these events and the intra-actions of all elements. This approach offers one strategy for transforming what K–12 science education looks like for both developing scientists and everyday citizens.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigated the composition of alkali–silica reaction (ASR) products formed in mortar and concrete that underwent accelerated ASR testing using two test methods: the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) and the simulated pore solution immersion test (SPSM). The composition of the ASR products formed in the accelerated tests was compared with those in a 25-year old bridge in New South Wales demolished due to ASR. Results showed that the ASR products inside an aggregate contained calcium (≈20%), silicon (≈60%), and alkalis (≈20%) regardless of the ASR test method used. The ASR products in the AMBT sample only contained sodium, whereas the ASR products in the SPSM test and the demolished bridge both contained significant amounts of sodium and potassium, which indicated that the type of alkali in the ASR product is largely affected by the dominant alkali in the pore solution. However, considering that the total alkali content (Na + K) in the ASR products was similar regardless of the ASR test method used, this suggests that the total alkali content has more influence on the rate of expansion than the type of alkali. The composition of the ASR products also notably varied depending on the location in the concrete. ASR products closer to the cement paste had a higher calcium and lower alkali content than those inside an aggregate, which suggests that the calcium as well as the alkali content of the ASR products plays a significant role in the degree of ASR expansion.

Abstract:
Bolted joints are a major part of wind energy plants. Due to climatic conditions, they are often exposed to temperatures far below the freezing point. Together with the multiaxial state of stress, which results from the notch effect of the thread, and possible dynamic overloads during operation, sufficient ductility of the material is needed. The state of the art method to investigate the ductile behavior of fasteners is the Charpy pendulum impact test with a V-notched specimen. According to international standard DIN EN ISO 898-1 [1] respectively ASTM F568M-07 [2], fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel with a body centered cubic lattice structure can be used for temperatures down to 223 K (−50°C, −58°F) as long as a minimum impact energy of 27 J at 253 K (−20°C, −4°F) is met. As there are several disadvantages in using this test method for fasteners, a detailed examination of existing test methods and design concepts is necessary to find alternatives to the Charpy pendulum impact test. Extensive quasi-static and dynamic material tests were conducted on fasteners with property classes 5.6, 10.9 and 12.9 in a temperature range between 203 K (−70°C, −94°F) and room temperature 293 K (20°C, 68°F). Both mechanical properties and the influence of different specimen geometries were evaluated. Analytical concepts for the description of the low temperature applicability of different steels were analyzed.

Abstract:
In recent years Avio Aero and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have significantly enhanced their available experimental technology level in order to consolidate and deepen the investigation of some critical phenomena in aero-engine gas turbine combustion. A key parameter in the development of a lean-burn combustor is the design of the ignition system. The increase in the amount of air that flows through the primary zone to approximately 60% of the overall air proves to be beneficial for emissions reduction. In return it causes shorter residence times in the primary zone and makes the flame kernel generation and propagation a real challenge. With the scope to enhance the fundamental understanding of the ignition process at altitude conditions, the ISCRA rig (Ignition in Subatmospheric Conditions – Rig for Altitude Relight Investigation) has been designed and manufactured at the KIT. The design of the rig allows the generation of altitude conditions at variable flow velocities and turbulence characteristics. An optical access for ignition recording by a CCD camera is also provided. The paper presents the results of a fundamental investigation at the KIT using a generic setup. It consists of a pressure atomizer with known atomization properties mounted in a test rig which allows the variation of several parameters that influence ignition, namely: air pressure; air temperature; velocity; Fuel-Air-Ratio (FAR); Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD); spark energy; turbulence intensity and length scale. Two grey spots that exist in the knowledge map of the ignition process are addressed in this paper. These are data on kerosene spray ignition at temperatures below 293 K, where data is scarce and the relationship between flame kernel generation and propagation, which has not been broadly investigated nor is well understood. The ignition probabilities of kerosene sprays as a function of ignition energy in the temperature range from 253 K to 293 K, pressure of 0.7 bar, flow velocities up to 6 m/s at different turbulence intensities and length scales are measured. Furthermore, the influence of the above mentioned parameters on the kernel generation and propagation is presented and discussed. Results show that the energy required for flame kernel propagation is higher than for flame kernel generation. This difference increases at lower temperature and higher turbulence intensity. The paper gives an insight in magnitude of this difference in energy and compares the tendencies with an earlier model. The absolute values need to and will be corrected by future in situ measurements.

Abstract:
A prospective study has been performed to assess INR values obtained with a variety of thromboplastins during the early days of coumarin treatment. The reagents were BCT/253 (the primary International Reference Preparation), Diagen Activated, Diagen Freeze Dried, Manchester Reagent and Dade Thromboplastin FS. Prothrombin times were performed before the start of treatment and at regular intervals on fifteen patients who were given a slow induction regime. In theory INR should be the same irrespective of the thromboplastin. A wide range of values was however observed with the different thromboplastins on the same plasma samples. The mean deviations of the individual reagents from the mean INR obtained with the primary IRP were: Diagen Freeze-Dried 26%, Diagen Activated 13%, Dade FS 17%, Manchester Reagent 3%.There are two possible explanations for the discrepant findings. 1) In the induction phase Vitamin K dependent clotting factors are depressed at varying rates and thromboplastins differ in their sensitivity to the depression of these factors. The International Sensitivity Indices from which INR are derived are based on results from long-term stabilised patients. 2) The manufacturers' calibrations may be incorrect as demonstrated by the consistent differences of the results with some reagents from the IRP. The findings indicate therefore that INR values may not be dependable in the early days of oral anticoagulation with some thromboplastin reagents and that manufacturers' calibrations require independent assessment preferably by national control laboratories.
