Costa, Roger Vinícius da Silva. "Dictionaries and encyclopedias of suicide." Domínios de Lingu@gem 17 (November 21, 2023): e1757. http://dx.doi.org/10.14393/dlv17a2023-57.

Abstract:
There are some studies that analyze definitions of the term “suicide” in academic works, as well as in generalist dictionaries and encyclopedias in several languages, but there still seems to be no investigation focused on specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias (SDEs) on this topic. Hence the general objective of this study was to describe the suicide SDEs available in the literature. To accomplish this purpose, a basic, quantitative, qualitative, descriptive, bibliographical and documental method was used. The 12 criteria proposed by John Humbley in 2018 for the analysis of SDEs were determined as the main theoretical foundation. From 2017 to 2022, through an integrative review in 6 languages and 4 databases, 8 SDEs were excluded. The 4 included ones were 2 dictionaries and 2 encyclopedias published between 2003 and 2016, 3 in English and 1 in Spanish. One of the most relevant findings was the fact that the SDEs examined try to address the various aspects of this object, instead of adopting a reductionist perspective. However, as only 4 books were analyzed, it was not possible to identify a clear pattern about all 12 criteria and all 4 sources. For example, it is not known which terms would be more feasible to include in a work of this nature nor the optimal way to predicate them. Even so, this paper is a relevant contribution to the studies on language and suicide, providing elements for the evolution of dictionaries and encyclopedias specialized on this binomial.

Abstract:
Encyclopedic literature and dictionaries devoted to geological sciences were overviewed in the article. The authors emphasize the lack of basic Ukrainian geological encyclopedia and provide arguments for the necessity of its appearance. They substantiate the importance of dictionaries representing specific subject lexicon, in particular geological terminology: "Dictionary of Geological Terminology" (1923), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (1959), "Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Geological Terms" (1993), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological dictionary" (2011), "Ukrainian-French-English Dictionary of Geology, Geophysics, Well Drilling, and Oil, & Gas industry" (2011), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2016), "Geological Dictionary: Open Educational and Scientific Web Resource" (2017), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2018), "Ukrainian-Russian-English Dictionary of Geological Terms" (2020), and other mineralogical, geodetic, mining, petrographic dictionaries. The results show that Ukrainian encyclopedic and lexicographic literature does not provide knowledge of all geological sciences despite a fairly large number of encyclopedias and dictionaries (in total, over 40 sources were found), as there are dictionaries and encyclopedias encompassing only some particular geological fields. The authors also reflect on the issue of the distribution of subject encyclopedias and dictionaries in educational sphere today, when Wikipedia is considered to be the most popular online reference work in the world. The authors conclude that it is necessary to build a modern geological encyclopedia as a unified Ukrainian language source of reliable reference knowledge on geology.

Abstract:
Glossaries of introductory textbooks in psychology, biology, and animal behavior were surveyed to find whether they included the word ‘behavior’. In addition to texts, encyclopedias and dictionaries devoted to the study of behavior were also surveyed. Of the 138 tests sampled across all three fields, only 38 (27%) included the term ‘behavior’ in their glossaries. Of the 15 encyclopedias and dictionaries surveyed, only 5 defined ‘behavior’. To assess whether the term ‘behavior’ has disappeared from textbook glossaries or whether it has usually been absent, we sampled 23 introductory psychology texts written from 1886 to 1958. Only two texts contained glossaries, and the word ‘behavior’ was defined in both. An informal survey was conducted of students enrolled in introductory classes in psychology, biology, and animal behavior to provide data on the consistency of definitions. Students were asked to “define the word ‘behavior’.” Analysis indicated the definition was dependent upon the course. We suggest that future introductory textbook authors and editors of psychology-based dictionaries and encyclopedias include ‘behavior’ in their glossaries.

Abstract:
The article shows how the figure of Ignacy Krasicki was presented in nineteenth-century British general publications, ie encyclopedias, and dictionaries. The biographies of Ignacy Krasicki published in British encyclopedias carried a different cognitive value and had a different degree of originality. There were quite fairly well-designed biographical notes among them, but there were also superficial or extremely short biographical entries. There were also biographical notes copied from other publications. Nevertheless, the English-language reader had a number of possibilities to find information about Krasicki, particularly since the name appeared not only in general publications. Relatively often the person of the bishop-poet was also present on the pages of other publications appearing in the nineteenth century in Great Britain. Many texts about the history and culture of Poland, which appeared at that time, came from the quills of Poles who appeared in Great Britain after the collapse of the 1830 uprising. Among these emigrants, a large group of people were literates who, with a great knowledge of the subject, wrote about figures and events important to their country - at this time no longer existing on the map of Europe

From Polish biographical, obituary and commemorative lexicography. Russia and the USSR versus Poland – victims of anti-civilization. (A bibliography of selected works from 1832-2021) The paper presents selected issues in the area of Polish biographical lexicography from the genological perspective. The author proposes to distinguish a new type – obituary and commemorative lexicography. She states that no monographic work on biographical lexicography has been published within the Polish scholarly society. The existing publications are only in the form of thematic/problem and review articles. The second part of the paper contains a list of 379 Polish dictionaries; the bibliography covers the years 1832–2021. The data presented are considered statistically important. The bibliographic list includes various types/forms of dictionaries – strictly biographical dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, dictionary-encyclopedias, encyclopedic guides, reference books (e.g. Who is who?), directories of people (e.g. The Book of Siberians), personal loss books, cemetery books, lists of people, alphabetical lists of people, lists of surnames, nicknames, registers of the dead, deported and others, indexes of people (e.g. of repressed people) and others, inventories (e.g. names of labor camps), etc. Formally, publications of this type meet the requirements of studies in the field of lexicography because: 1/ they constitute a linearly ordered set (by lexicographic order), and 2/ they are specific databases storing specific information.

Abstract:
The use of the same term with different meanings and the use of different terms with somewhat analogous meanings are not exceptional phenomena in scientific language. This article deals with polysemy and synonymy, and consists of three parts. The introductory part gives a brief description of the dictionaries and encyclopedias published up to the present time and justifies the choice of the examples in this case study, namely the polysemic term coherence and four synonymous pairs of concepts and terms: documentary/instrumental translation, overt/covert translation and interlingual interpretive/interlingual descriptive communication as well as direct/indirect translation. The second part offers a comparison between the various dictionaries and encyclopedias and shows how the polysemic term coherence and the related pairs of concepts/terms are dealt with. It also indicates how the profusion of terminology could more effectively meet the needs of everyone who is engaged in translation and Translation Studies. The purpose of the third part is to demonstrate that in the training of translators, it is necessary to dispose of a metalanguage and that terminological diversity as a reflection of theoretic-conceptual diversity may be seen as an opportunity.

Abstract:
Thanks in part to the influence of Friedrich Brockhaus’s Konversations-Lexikon, a German encyclopedia inaugurated in 1796, biographies of the living had become unremarkable in Europe’s encyclopedias by the early nineteenth century. Today, they are pervasive. Between 1674 and 1750, they remained rare and controversial in the alphabetical ancestors of the modern encyclopedia. In this article, I explain why, and show how encyclopedists’ practices evolved in the period in which the historical dictionary and other alphabetical proto-encyclopedias burst onto the European literary scene, that is, the late seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth. I begin by exploring early encyclopedists’ motives for not treating the living. My second section then examines the most influential historical dictionaries as well as the encyclopedia that best covered the living, tracking how practices regarding contemporary biographies evolved. Finally, I consider some of the broader social and cultural changes, both internal and external to the history of encyclopedia-making, that are reflected in encyclopedias’ growing coverage of the living and the recently deceased.

Abstract:
Economists and sociologists have repeatedly raised the problem of defining the concepts of “institute” and “institutions”, “institutionality” and “institutionalism”. This is due to informal mix of terms, epistemology of institutionalism and different translation of foreign sources. However, attempts to draw attention to delimitation of these concepts in various scientific sources did not give an actual result – in fact, until now there has not been formed a system for defining, specifying and clearly articulating specific terms. Hence, all the works of this semantic nature did not get practical implementation. Thus, the authors assume that in the science of institutionalism, due to misinformation of the main terms, there is a gap in understanding their meaning, degree of study and adequacy, significance. During the processing of official scientific and reference publications, it was suggested that plurality of explanation and use of the category “institute” was due to a number of reasons, one of which is etymological one. The publications included: scientific articles on the subject, monographs, extended abstracts of thesis and thesis, textbooks, encyclopedias, as well as dictionaries: bilingual, dictionaries of foreign words, terminological, etymological, encyclopedic, interpretative, academic, dictionaries-reference books. It is also important that, besides scientific publications, the definitions studied are also found in reference dictionaries, reference books, encyclopedias, etc., which to a certain extent testifies to the official interpretation of these concepts. Accordingly, based on the analysis of reference encyclopedic literature, terms and literary sources were grouped based on similarity of interpretation. However, it is not always possible to equate one rule to all adjacent processes in scientific theories. And since the institutional theory relates to several scientific areas (for example, social, economic, legal, theoretical and methodological, state-building, etc.), the authors consider it appropriate to separate the role of concepts depending on their functional purpose.

Statement of the problem. Teaching foreign languages at school and university is a complex and multifaceted process. Undoubtedly, the organization of the educational process is impossible without the use of textbooks, workbooks and books for reading. Dictionaries and encyclopedias become an additional means of learning a foreign language. The focus of this study is the problem of using special encyclopedias in the process of studying a foreign language at the university, particularly, English encyclopedias while learning English at the university. The relevance of the study is due to the high interest in foreign languages and the need to know them on a sufficient level to achieve some goals. Results. Modern encyclopedias in foreign languages, presented both in printed and online formats, allow users to obtain the necessary information on the topic under study, as well as to get acquainted with new terms of the subject area being studied. The analysis of "World History Encyclopedia" is presented in the article. The data of this encyclopedia can be used by students of historical specialties studying history as the main discipline, and a foreign language as an additional subject. Conclusion. The conducted research allows us to conclude that the introduction of encyclopedia materials into the educational process makes it interesting and interactive, provokes students’ interest and contributes to a better memorization of information. Such encyclopedias are learner’s ones that is manifested in exercises to check the assimilation of the studied material. Moreover, the learner’s orientation can be seen on the example of sound files included into the encyclopedic articles that allows to listen to the data in the language being studied. The information in such encyclopedias is usually given in a user-friendly language. The introduction of graphic illustrations contributes to a more effective perception of the material.

Dictionaries and encyclopedias represent bundles of choices. No book is large enough to address every aspect of its topic. Space is always at a premium. There are always more terms or variants that could be included. Publication due dates always limit how much more time one could devote to a project. The choices made by authors of these two books listing terms describing books shape the works, of course, but also provide the basis for judging them together. There is merit in a head-to-head comparison.

Abstract:
The proliferation of encyclopedias and dictionaries in every field raises questions concerning the scholarly purpose and economics of these enterprises: Who stands to benefit from them most, and who can afford them? A new encyclopedia of medieval Italy distills for the current moment the latest canonical judgment of editors and authors about which subjects merit scrutiny and how much weight they should receive in a reference work intended to be consulted rather than read from cover to cover. The process of interdisciplinary collaboration results in a collective portrait of medieval Italy containing some surprises, only a few of which are pleasant.

Abstract:
The research objective was to assess the information potential of reference publications on the history of entrepreneurship in the pre-revolutionary Siberia. Pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and post-Soviet scientists published various encyclopedias and reference books on the history of trade, merchants, and entrepreneurship in Siberia in the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries. The reference literature of each period has its own characteristic features. For instance, The Brief Encyclopedia of the History of Merchants and Commerce of Siberia and The Encyclopedic Dictionary of the History of Merchants and Commerce of Siberia are very unusual. The dictionary with its encyclopedic form of presentation is currently the most convenient and popular variant. Directories and encyclopedias reflect the era they belonged to and thus can provide valuable information on the time period. The dictionaries under analysis appeared to contain biographies of people engaged in entrepreneurial activity, definitions of entrepreneurial activities, descriptions of rural settlements, cities, fairs, etc. The study of reference publications significantly expands the existing ideas about the nature of the business development, trade, and economy of Siberia. However, the related historiography still needs further studies.

Abstract:
Purpose. The study is aimed at exploring the ethnic content of values ұл / son and қыз / daughter in the Kazakh language and culture bearers’ linguistic consciousness and determining their place in the system of family and relative values in the Kazakh culture at the level of the state. The problem under study is especially relevant in the context of transformation of Kazakhstani society, heterogeneity of language situation and cultural diversity across regions. Methods. The study employed an ethnographic research design, which included a component analysis, an association experiment, and a ranking of values ұл / son and қыз / daughter by the representatives of the Kazakh nation. The study materials comprised linguistic data, obtained from dictionaries and encyclopedias of the Kazakh language, Kazakh paremias, and data of the association experiment. Semantic components of the values were defined and modelling of the association fields was conducted with further categorization of semantic gestalts. Results. The analysis of Kazakh dictionaries, encyclopedias and paremias revealed the importance of raising children based on good examples in Kazakh families. A son in Kazakh culture is considered great happiness, luck, and wealth, as he is the successor of his father and the heir of the family house in the future, whereas a daughter is raised in especially strict conditions, though treated as a guest, considered the prosperity in the family, pampered and valued for her beauty and girlish behaviour. The association experiment’s results were in line with the analysis of proverbs, showing the common and different components in the association fields and semantic zones of the values. The ranking of values ұл / son and қыз / daughter confirmed our hypothesis. Conclusions. Children are of utmost importance in the Kazakh culture, though the treatment and relation to a son and a daughter, as well as their place in the family differs because of their different roles and responsibilities.

French terms are used for comparison and contrast. Morphological and semantic properties of term-constituting lexemes are examined within the framework of an analysis of lexical productivity, which is defined by three criteria: number of existing derivatives, rules of derivation, and neological potential. The analysis also shows other aspects of derivational productivity: favourite word-class membership, semantic options, and terminologization.

Abstract:
The ways of representing the Balkan Peninsula that existed in Russia in the first half of the 19th century are analyzed in the article. The sources for the study were encyclopedic dictionaries of the first half of the 19th century. (A.A. Plyushar, L.I. Zeddeler, A.V. Starchevsky), as well as an unpublished work by I.P. Liprandi “The Experience of the Word Interpreter of the Ottoman Empire”. The author argues that for a long time the Balkan Peninsula was not perceived as a single region with a set of historically deter-mined features. Arguments are presented confirming that certain areas of the peninsula were elements of different discourses. The relationship between the choice of a particular register of descriptions by the authors of the dictionaries and the political affiliation of the described regions of the Balkan Peninsula is shown. The relationship between the choice of a particular register of descriptions by the authors of the dictionaries and the political affiliation of the described regions of the Balkan Peninsula is shown. A special attitude of the authors of encyclopedias to Serbia and Greece, the newly formed states on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula, has been established. Examples are given that show the duality of their images in the Russian narrative in the first half of the 19th century.

Abstract:
The article explores issues related to the lexicographic development of biblical proverbs and phraseological units, which are typically represented in dictionaries solely in their canonical form, without taking into account the peculiarities of their contemporary usage. The aim of the research is to develop a dictionary concept that, alongside traditional forms, reflects the structural and semantic transformations of biblicisms in the media space and live communication. Phraseological units and proverbs, selected from biblical dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well as those documented in internet forums, chats, and blogs (from 2013 to 2023), and recorded in spoken language, have become the subject of structural-semantic, componential, and contextual analysis prior to their lexicographic treatment. Special attention is paid to transformational mechanisms of phonetic mimicry and playful variants of phraseological units and proverbs created on this basis. During lexicographic modeling, parameters for an innovative dictionary entry combining elements characteristic of explanatory and axiological dictionaries have been developed. The implementation of the developed parametric model is demonstrated using the example of the proverb ‘Eyes are the mirror of the soul.’ It is emphasized that the proposed lexicographic concept will allow for the reflection of dynamic processes affecting the corpus of biblicisms in their sociocultural context, prediction of trends in this field, and utilization of dictionary materials for language teaching purposes.

Abstract:
The article considers the issue of nomination and interpretation of the terminological system of pedagogical science from the time of researchers’ address to this issue, ie from the 1960s to the present. The author has implemented a scientific approach, which analyzes works on both historical and contemporary aspects of pedagogical terminology in the context of pedagogical science and linguistics. The assessment of the history of development and the current state of the domestic pedagogical terminology by Ukrainian researchers-lexicologists is revealed. It was found that Ukrainian linguists in their lexicological research pay sufficient attention to the history and current state of pedagogical terminology used in pedagogical literature, including the characteristics of reference literature – pedagogical dictionaries and encyclopedias. The subject of the author’s analysis were the works of researchers-educators who analyze the terminology of pedagogical science, its positive and negative aspects in their diachronic and synchronous dimensions. In the absence of a differentiated approach in modern scientific discourse, a comparative analysis of the positions of Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian authors, who are still in a single domestic research field. It is noted that the main channel of enrichment of the conceptual and terminological apparatus of pedagogical science is modern educational practice, which does not pass the relevant expert assessment by specialists, but immediately replenishes the pedagogical terminology. It was found that the creative heritage of famous domestic teachers, their original conceptual and terminological vocabulary is beyond the scientific interests of modern Ukrainian researchers. Instead, there is an active creation of neologisms, mostly in English, new two-word or multi-word terms, especially when describing new forms and methods of teaching and education, as well as in qualifying works. The general conclusion about the need to pay more attention to research on the history and current state of the pedagogical terminology as an important component of pedagogical development. The availability of Ukrainian general pedagogical reference literature – dictionaries and encyclopedias – their terminological content also requires a separate analysis, as the development of domestic pedagogical science provides enough material to create a standardized and systematized terminology.
