Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-9753.
Full textProblem : How does Japanese company coordinate with its subsidiaries in Thai and Chinese markets?
Purpose : To describe organization structure of Japanese company as well as compare how headquarters coordinates with its subsidiaries in Thai and Chinese markets. Also, this thesis will give benefits for the academics and managers of other multinational corporations.
Method : Qualitative approach and comparative design are implemented in this thesis meanwhile secondary data from internet, documentary research and primary data from semi-structured interview through telephone & email are used for collecting information. More importantly, Tokai Carbon is chosen as a case study to understand organization structure and its coordination between Japanese company and Thai & Chinese subsidiaries.
Conclusion : The organization structure and coordination should be concerned in multinational corporations. Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. as a multinational Japanese company who runs business and establishes various subsidiaries in worldwide mostly centralizes power to headquarters. Also, Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. applied means of formal and informal coordination in order to cooperate between Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. (headquarters) and Thai Tokai Carbon Product Co., Ltd (Thai subsidiaries) & Tokai Carbon Tianjin Co., Ltd. (Chinese subsidiaries). With respect to formal and informal mechanisms, these two mechanisms are similarly implemented in collaboration between headquarters and Thai & Chinese subsidiaries. Nonetheless, there are a few differences on informal tools in form of lateral relations and socialization.
Wingårdh, Ebba, and Sarah Alarabi. "Cultural Diversity within the Company and Its Influence on Managers' Informational Roles : Case Study of UMA Ltd Co." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Business Studies, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-126769.
Full textThis thesis examines how cultural diversity within an organization might influence managers‟ information-handling process. The models used are; Geert Hofstede‟s five dimensions of national culture, to represent the cultural diversity; and Henry Mintzberg‟s definition of the manager‟s informational roles, to represent the managers‟ information-handling.To show this empirically, a case study of a half-Swedish, half-Vietnamese-owned retail company, UMA Ltd Co, was conducted. This company is situated in Vietnam and employs a range of different nationalities. Interviews were conducted with seven of UMA‟s managers to gain an understanding of their opinions concerning their informational roles, as well as to identify issues and benefits within the company caused by the cultural diversity. The results of the interviews revealed some relevant cultural issues and benefits of working in a culturally diverse company. It was evident through the analysis, in which the cultural dimensions were applied onto the informational roles, that there are a number of problems at UMA in need of repair. For instance, differences in employees‟ perception of the power distance dimension seem to affect how information is spread and gained. This is also caused by the unclear organizational structure of the company, where employees, instead of realizing who they are obliged to answer to, rather follow their culturally given hierarchical system. Further issues caused by the cultural diversity at UMA are presented in the conclusion of this thesis.
Smith, Etienne Roche. "A critical analysis of current vs proposed risk underwriting and claims management procedures at Sasguard Insurance Company Ltd." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/847.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since its inception in 1998 as a wholly owned captive insurer, Sasguard has successfully supplied the short-term insurance needs of its parent company, Pioneer Foods Pty Ltd. Although the financial results of Sasguard increased steadily over this entire period, the insurer has never investigated the quality of its service regarding the perceptions of its internal support staff, who represent Sasguard to its client Pioneer. The objective of this research report was to critically analyse the insurer’s current risk underwriting and claims management procedures to determine if the current situation was acceptable and if not, to present proposals to reduce costs and to supply Sasguard’s internal clients (members of the parent company) with a better service. The tasks that were completed for this report were: • a literature study on aspects of risk management directly applicable to Sasguard; • critical analysis of the current risk underwriting and claims management procedures; • identification of shortcomings in the current structure; • collection of responses from internal support staff members by an electronic questionnaire; • critical analysis of those responses; and • proposals which Sasguard can implement to address identified shortcomings. The questionnaire was posted on Pioneer’s intranet site, and the entire population of 30 members was notified by email to complete and submit it within a specified period. Twenty-eight staff members did, with two on leave, for a 93% response rate. The responses were analysed in detail to form the basis of the empirical investigation. They were compared to the writer’s own observations, and together were used to develop conclusions and recommendations which Sasguard can implement in future to reduce both risk and costs associated with claims submitted by its internal clients. The main findings follow. Not enough representatives are at management level. Most (89%) want to increase their background knowledge of insurance, mainly through Sasguard. They want a paperless system to view claims. They were divided on whether to establish a workshop to recover parts of disused vehicles; more study is needed. They want to simplify the process of getting quotes and thus facilitating claims. They want better two-way communication. They favoured using the claims history of a branch, along with other forms of reward, to motivate supervisors and drivers, and others, to reduce the accident rate. The issue of whether out-sourced drivers have increased accident claims needs more study. Indeed, the legal employment status of out-sourced drivers needs to be addressed. Most of the internal client representatives were satisfied with the speed of claims settlement, but nearly a third were not entirely satisfied, which the researcher interprets as a cause for concern. Furthermore, one fourth would consider moving to a traditional insurer; this perception also is worrying and can be addressed, possibly through better understanding of the captive insurer and its practices. Proposals followed from the findings, hopefully to be implemented in due course. While results cannot be generalised, they can be provide insight to other captive insurers, especially those in a manufacturing environment similar to that at Pioneer Foods.

Mergers and acquisitions are important ways for multinational companies to expand and grow their business. This thesis studies the role of product management in the success of mergers and acquisitions by analyzing Eaton's 2008 Phoenixtec Power Company Ltd. acquisition. Using public information, market reports, internal documents and insider interviews, I explore four components of product management in the integration process, including product portfolio management, sales and marketing reorganizations, channel integration and brand architecture. For each component, the objectives of the integration, the methodology used by Eaton and the outcomes are examined. Moreover, the performance of the merged company in terms of sales revenue, profitability, market share, customer satisfaction and employee engagement are analyzed to demonstrate the overall success of this acquisition. My thesis ends with findings and recommendations for building a standard framework to align activities with strategic drivers, maintaining competitive advantages of the acquired company, leveraging the acquired resources to enhance overall capabilities, and respecting and motivating individual talent with local know-how.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The rise of the health and fitness club, Health and Racquet Club, in the late eighties was spectacular and it came as no surprise that the company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1994. The two founder members, Peter Gardener and Robert Mitchell listed a company within a short period of time and were not afraid to change their strategy and expand their operations into other sectors of the leisure industry in 1995. In the late nineties, after restructuring the subsidiaries of the group, management started to look at foreign markets for expansion of the core business, namely the Health and Racquet Clubs. The group's foreign expansion accumulated a vast amount of debt on its balance sheet and in retrospect was seen as one of the main reasons for its collapse. The company was placed under liquidation in the end of the 2000 financial year. This study will evaluate the different strategies management followed, and will identify some key strategic mistakes that was made and that led to the downfall of a seemingly financially strong organization that offered above average returns to it's stakeholders. It also aims to show that a business strategy has to rely on strong corporate governance and that the last say always lies with the stakeholders within that company.

Under the name ecc – european culture company Ltd., Ilka and Markus Wild started to build up a business in summer 2009. This company shall to focus on consulting in three fields : Public- and Media Relations, Language & Intercultural issues and giving presentations. These fields tend to be connected to each other. Since one of the founders, Ms. Ilka Wild, is an experienced linguist the language division shall be first of all the core of ecc. Hence ecc want to offer language courses and tutorials for young professionals and companies which are dealing with European countries or with business partners from the European environment respectively. Moreover the management wants to relate the language part with intercultural trainings. They believe that it is very useful for any kind of communication if you have an understanding of the cultural roots of your counterpart, especially if you have to negotiate or closing a deal. The second division shall be presentation training in this ecc wants to develop a partnership with another company, Affinity Asia Consulting Ltd. and their owner, Mr. Richard deVries. He is an experienced trainer for presentation seminars. Together both companies want to offer first of all tailor made seminars for presentation trainings which focuses on the expectations of the potential European target audience. The third field ecc wants to establish is Public and Media Relation consulting. The founders think that there are many small and medium sized companies in Taiwan, which already have business or customer in Germany but they are facing a lack of profile or awareness in their target region Europe. Since the other founder, Mr. Markus Wild is an experienced PR professional who worked 5 years as a spokesman for a 5bn-Euro energy company the founders believe that ecc can offer PR-advisory in the near future.

This dissertation is an assumption that display manufactures or touch panel manufacturers might want to invest TPK Holding Co., Ltd for cooperation. How can they evaluate TPK Holding Co., Ltd? Ever since Apple Inc. introduced the first generation iPhone in AD 2007, the entire mobile phone industry changed dramatically due to the application of touch panel in smartphones. Almost all 1st-tier mobile phone makers were shocked and realized that touch panel application would be a major factor of success in the market of mobile phone. Thus, they modified their new product development for both middle- end and high-end smartphones those must be applied with touch panel as a necessary specification. As a result of market demand, there were many touch panel companies established several years ago and created a competitive market in touch panel industry. The first generation iPhone was with the configuration of projective- capacitive touch panel. Due to the patent issues, touch panel manufacturers began to provide customers from resistive touch panel then switched to projective-capacitive touch panel that includes either PET or glass material. Business of touch panel has been going up and down caused by mobile phone makers’ choices. However, the competition was getting tough continuously with more players from AD2013 when display manufacturers introduced in-cell and on-cell in the market. Nowadays, it is being a stage of both touch panel manufacturers and display manufacturers grab market share of touch panel for mobile devices.

This thesis analyzes a business management model of Sin Xin Leather, a family enterprise from its humble beginnings till its success of an international leading brand today. Sin Xin Leather is a world-leading tannery that supplies fine and high-quality cowhide internationally. 1926, in order to escape the chaos caused by the Chinese civil war, Mr. Xu’s grandfather led all family members to leave from Chaoshan-Guangdong, China to Singapore. In an accidental situation, Grandfather Xu got acquainted with some Indonesian sailors who had brought some raw hides along with them. Upon learning about cowhide, he then seized the opportunity to start a business in trading of the skins. Singapore was under the British Colony at that point in time and some of the British soldiers had the knowledge to tan raw hides. Grandfather Xu tapped on their knowledge and expertise in tanning raw hides and went into tanning services as part of his business. As the management of a small family business grew to be complex with the involvement of many family members, they started to leave the company after the passing of Grandfather Xu. With that, Mr. Xu and his father decided to re-organize the family business and started Sin Xin Leather in 1978. The core business of Sin Xin Leather was to import various type of cowhide, process and tan them into leathers and sell them globally to upmarket and luxurious fashion houses. These leathers are then made into products such as handbags, shoes, watchstraps and garment, and sold in high fashion boutiques. The company gradually became well-established after many years of laborious management in day-to-day operations, funding, employing technologically-savvy personal, working with the cattle farmers, animal species/wildlife protection societies, etc. Quality of skins improved with the use of high-tech equipment and recruitment of talents. An increase in skins’ production led to increasing profits and the company was finally listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX) in 2008. Shortly after being listed, the company suffered in the 2008 financial crisis. The leather industry was temporarily affected but the business of Sin Xin Leather resumed gradually with a new management plan after a year of hard work. In 2011, after a year of negotiations, Sin Xin Leather and two luxury brands from France and Italy, the world's top luxury goods organizations, finally came to an agreement and these top luxury businesses became a partner of the company. With these luxury companies’ several high-end luxury brands, they eventually became the company's customers – buying cow leather for their luxurious products. With the partnership and strong support of these customers, Sin Xin Leather foresees its increase in profits and business scaling to greater heights.

Full textResearchers are not satisfied with models that explain share price variations based on net present value analysis. To overcome the traditional problems of net present value analysis, intrinsic bubbles and the dividend price ratio were investigated to explain share price volatility. An index derived from dividend paying shares listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange Limited (JSE Ltd) for the period January 2000 to December 2010 was investigated. This investigation was based on Froot and Obstfeld’s (1991) Intrinsic Bubbles model. The null hypothesis of no intrinsic bubbles was not rejected. The findings infer that share prices were not only driven by fundamentals, implying the presence of intrinsic bubbles. This is consistent with the findings of Brooks, Nneji and Ward (2011) after applying the same methodology on the US housing market. The researcher’s aim was to provide a better clarification on whether changes in fundamentals are suitable to predict share prices, but results were inconclusive in this regard. The results indicate that fundamentals account for 80.1% of share price movements.

Using internalization to helped increase Taiwan’s competitive ability and open up the international market. In addition, after joining MOU, Taiwan’s financial industry had the opportunity to open doors into the Chinese market. Soon after Taiwan signed the ECFA, local investors were able openly conduct business with China. Nan Shan insurance company can rely on its own marketing strategy to open up the China market which is inevitable: On the other hand, expanding its market into Southeast Asia is becoming a marketing necessity. The insurance industries owns tremendous amount of capital to invest in that market. Nan Shan has many choices to invest in various opportunities such as government bonds, stocks, government funds, real estate, and loans etc. but Nan Shan has to balance its investment portfolio between negotiable securities and real estate. By pursuing this strategy, it is believed that Nan Shan will open up a brighter future in insurance industry.
