Abstract:
Objectives The purposes of this study were to analyze the Irish new Junior Cycle Curriculum and draw the issues and implications. Methods For the study, collected documents related to Irish Junior Cycle curriculum development and operation published by the Irish Ministry of Education and the National Curriculum Evaluation Institute. This study derived implications by analyzing the characteristics of the educational system, curriculum goals, schedule, composition method, principles of curriculum guidelines and curriculum contents. Results The new junior cycle curriculum had set out 8 principles, 8 key skills and twenty-four statements of learning for the junior cycle. It comprises subjects, short courses and priority learning units(PLUs). Schools have the flexibility to decide what combination of subjects and short courses could be. The Junior Certificate examination is being replaced by a new school-based model of assessment. Conclusions Recommendations are as follows: First, continuity, sequence and interrelationship in developing and implementing the curriculum especially among subjects is very crucial. Second, the relevance of key skills in every subject should be examined. Third, new subject area ‘short courses’ has special meaning for future. As in Ireland junior cycle framework, greater choice for schools and their students could be with the third area, ‘short courses’.

Abstract:
Abstract Technical Graphics is one of the technology subjects taught at Junior Certificate level in post- primary schools in Ireland. The Junior Certificate examination is held at the end of the Junior Cycle in post-primary schools, which caters for students aged from 12 to 15 years. As a teacher of Technical Graphics for the past seven years, I have gained a great understanding and insight into the different topics in the subject and how they are perceived by students. I concur with the State Examinations Commission report (2008) that students lack an understanding of the rotation element of transformation geometry, one of the six topics covered on the Junior Cycle Technical Graphics course. The purpose of this study is to implement a new teaching methodology through the use of SolidWorks in an effort to improve the students’ visualization, spatial awareness and understanding of transformation geometry. I engaged in an action research study of my own practice as I investigated if SolidWorks could actually be used at Junior Certificate level to improve student understanding of transformation geometry. The action research took place over a five-week period and included three cycles of research. The research was carried out with a third-year Junior Cycle group aged between fifteen and sixteen years of age and all students in the class took part in the study. The first stage of the research examined student progress as they worked through the topic following teacher instruction on SolidWorks. The second stage of the research examined the students’ progress as they used the software for themselves. I carried out an assessment task with students towards the end of the study, which showed that student learning had improved in comparison to previous years.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to examine and compare the propulsion techniques of senior male, senior female, and junior male athletes and to determine the relationship between the kinematic variables and performance. A two-dimensional video analysis was performed on the 800 m finals (n = 23) at the 1994 British Wheelchair National Track Championships. From this, the angle of lean, elbow angle, and the cycle dynamics were determined. The senior male athletes achieved a faster maximum velocity (7.3 ± 0.3 m.s-1) than that achieved by the senior female (5.9 ± 1.0 m.s1) and junior male athletes (6.0 ± 1.0 m.s-1), resulting in a greater distance covered during each push cycle. The kinematic analysis showed that the junior athletes adopted a 5° more upright position and spent less time in contact with the hand-rim (25%) than the senior athletes. A moderate correlation was found between cycle distance and performance time (r = -0.68; p < 0.01). In conclusion, this study suggests that there are kinematic differences between senior male, senior female, and junior male wheelchair athletes.

Abstract:
In 2016, a hospital approved guideline on first line immunosuppression was introduced. This included evidence-based guidance on consent, prescription, dosing, safety and efficacy monitoring of corticos- teroid, azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate, IVIg, SCIg, rituximab and cyclophosphamide use in common inflammatory neuromuscular diseases. It was accompanied by drug-specific patient information booklets and disease-specific clinical outcome measurement tools. The centre for neuromuscular diseases has not recorded any serious adverse events associated with these medications since its introduction. With junior doctors rotating in 3-6 monthly cycles, we identified the need for recurrent implementation efforts to maintain guideline impact. With an iterative process of four sequential cycles we:1) performed a survey of adequacy of admission/discharge documentation,2) created electronic patient record (EPR) proformas for admission/discharge,3) included a training session at changeover hospital induction,4) added a training session to mid-rotation peer-led teaching rota. This process resulted in optimal admission/discharge documentation (as per guidelines) of: Cycle 2) 61%/96%; Cycle 3) 100%/70%; Cycle 4) 86%/100%.Here we highlight the potential for loss of compliance with guideline use by junior medical staff over multiple changeovers, demonstrate the need for ongoing implementation efforts and underline the benefit of integrated electronic proformas (content in poster).

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Inpatient falls are the most commonly reported patient safety incidents and in the United Kingdom, there are 250,000 reported falls per year 1. A rapid response report (RRR) issued in 2011 by the NPSA highlighted need for improvement in identifying fractures and neurological observations. These figures reflect significant implications to patients’ health and financial burden to the NHS. Aims To improve assessment and documentation of inpatient falls assessment. Methods Two PDSA cycles were completed. First PDSA cycle established a baseline of post fall assessment and documentation in which raising awareness and teaching (RAT) to junior doctors was done. Second PDSA cycle identified room for further improvement and post inpatient fall medical assessment (PIFMA) Performa was developed to aid assessment and documentation for use of junior doctors. Feedback regarding the usefulness of the PIFMA Performa was collected via survey. Results The RAT intervention involved 30 patients of the Elderly wards in November and December 2017 and the PIFMA intervention involved 29 patients in all Medical wards in January and February 2019. The PIFMA Performa improved the time taken to review patients as per doctors survey. On comparing the RAT against PIFMA Performa interventions, documentation improved in the categories of physical examination (from 80% to 97%), neurological observations (from 49% to 98%), medication review (from 53% to 83%), and measuring lying standing blood pressure (from 83% to 90%). Conclusions Feedback from junior doctors states that the PIFMA Performa was certainly a very useful guidance tool and help to speed up documentation. These improvements only translated if junior doctors utilize the PIFMA Performa and so this is now being implemented in the trust policy. Further PDSA cycle can reassess if improvements truly represent the population cross-section. References 1. The incidence and costs of inpatient falls in hospitals (2017), NHS improvement. 2.
