Abstract:

We calculate a sheaf line in [Formula: see text] which is the real line supporting sheaf points on [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] Yang–Mills (YM) instanton (or [Formula: see text] complex YM instanton) sheaves for some given ADHM data we obtained previously. We found that this sheaf line is indeed a special jumping line over [Formula: see text] spacetime. In addition, we calculate the singularity structure of the connection [Formula: see text] and the field strength [Formula: see text] at the corresponding singular point on [Formula: see text] of this sheaf line. We found that the order of singularity at the singular point on [Formula: see text] associated with the sheaf line in [Formula: see text] is higher than those of other singular points associated with normal jumping lines. We conjecture that this is a general feature for sheaf lines among jumping lines.

Abstract:

Theoretical oscillator strengths are reported for transitions between excited terms of the singlet and triplet S, P, D, F and G manifolds of atomic magnesium. The principal quantum numbers of the jumping electron range from n = 4 to 100. The calculations are based on the Coulomb approximation. Low-n results, for which other data are available previously, agree reasonably well with the sophisticated calculations of Moccia and Spizzo (1988). Data for 1,3F–1,3G transitions may deviate from hydrogenic values by as much as 50%.

Abstract:

The effect of plasma Coulomb microfied dynamics on spectral line shapes is under consideration. The analytical solution of the problem is unachievable with famous Chandrasekhar–Von-Neumann results up to the present time. The alternative methods are connected with modeling of a real ion Coulomb field dynamics by approximate models. One of the most accurate theories of ions dynamics effect on line shapes in plasmas is the Frequency Fluctuation Model (FFM) tested by the comparison with plasma microfield numerical simulations. The goal of the present paper is to make a detailed comparison of the FFM results with analytical ones for the linear and quadratic Stark effects in different limiting cases. The main problem is connected with perturbation additions laws known to be vector for small particle velocities (static line shapes) and scalar for large velocities (the impact limit). The general solutions for line shapes known in the frame of scalar perturbation additions are used to test the FFM procedure. The difference between “scalar” and “vector” models is demonstrated both for linear and quadratic Stark effects. It is shown that correct transition from static to impact limits for linear Stark-effect needs in account of the dependence of electric field jumping frequency in FFM on the field strengths. However, the constant jumping frequency is quite satisfactory for description of the quadratic Stark-effect. The detailed numerical comparison for spectral line shapes in the frame of both scalar and vector perturbation additions with and without jumping frequency field dependence for the linear and quadratic Stark effects is presented.

Abstract:

This thesis is an investigation of the moduli spaces of instanton bundles on the Fano threefold Y_5 (a linear section of Gr(2,5)). It contains new proofs of classical facts about lines, conics and cubics on Y_5, and about linear sections of Y_5. The main original results are a Grauert-Mülich theorem for the splitting type of instantons on conics, a bound to the splitting type of instantons on lines and an SL_2-equivariant description of the moduli space in charge 2 and 3. Using these results we prove the existence of a unique SL_2-equivariant instanton of minimal charge and we show that for all instantons of charge 2 the divisor of jumping lines is smooth. In charge 3, we provide examples of instantons with reducible divisor of jumping lines. Finally, we construct a natural compactification for the moduli space of instantons of charge 3, together with a small resolution of singularities for it.

Abstract:

Many Southerners enjoy conversations about food, quickly jumping in with likes and dislikes, regional preferences, and food-related stories. The subject of food often crosses lines of race, class, gender, and region, and provides an opportunity for a common discussion point. This book explores the types of identities, allegiances, and bonds that are made possible and are strengthened through Southern foods and foodways. It adds to the growing list examining Southern food, but its focus on the cuisine’s rhetorical nature and the communicative effect that the food can have on Southern culture makes a significant contribution to that important conversation. The book tells the stories of Southern food that speak to the identity of the region, explaining how food helps to build individual identities, and exploring the possibilities of how food opens up dialogue. The authors show how food acts rhetorically, with the kinds of food that we choose to eat and serve sending messages about how we view ourselves and others. Food serves an identity-building function, factoring heavily into the understanding of who we are. The stories surrounding food are so important to Southern culture, they provide a significant and meaningful way to open up dialogue in the region. By sharing and celebrating the stories and actual food of Southern foodways, Southerners are able to focus on similar histories and traditions, despite the division that has plagued and continues to plague the South. Taken together, the book shows how Southern food provides a significant starting point for understanding food’s rhetorical potential.

Abstract:

In order to investigate the coalescence and out-of-plane jumping of two incompressible droplets on a non-wetting surface surrounded by an incompressible fluid with matched viscosity in the low Ohnesorge number regime, a two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann phase-field model is implemented. An interfacial force of potential form is used to model the internal surface tension force and capture the fluid-surface interaction, viz. the contact-line dynamics. We evaluate the simulated velocity fields and interface shape evolution during coalescence and the subsequent jumping event. We confirm that the coalescence dynamics of the binary droplet system is similar to the case where the outer fluid viscosity is small compared to that of the droplet fluid, as is the case of condensed water droplet jumping on superhydrophobic surfaces in a gaseous ambient. An argument is also developed to demonstrate that the dynamics in 2D, when appropriately scaled, should be approximately equivalent to the corresponding 3D case. A simple drag model is used to capture the rapid velocity decay of the jumping droplet as it moves away from the surface into the viscous fluid. The results suggest the possibility of experimentally observing coalescence-induced droplet jumping in liquid-liquid systems that may be potentially exploited for microfluidic applications.

Abstract:

In 1998, Husky Oil Operations Limited and its partner formerly Rigel Oil, (purchased by Talisman Energy in 1999), constructed a 26.2 km pipeline in Kananaskis Country to transport sour oil, solution gas and produced water from Pad #3 on Cox Hill to the Shell Oil Jumping Pound Gas Plant for processing. Kananaskis Country is a 4160 km2 “Planning Area” that has both Prime Protection and Multiple Use designations. Situated just west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada it has considerable recreational and environmental value, including significant wildlife habitat. The original exploration and subsequent pipeline construction applications required separate Alberta Energy & Utilities Board (AEUB) public hearings with both involving significant public consultation. Prior to drilling on the lands that had been purchased more than a decade ago, Husky adopted several governing principles to reduce environmental impact, mitigate damage and foster open and honest communication with other industrial users, regulators, local interest groups and local aboriginal communities. During planning and construction, careful attention was paid to using existing linear disturbances (seismic lines, roads and cutblocks). A variety of environmental studies, that incorporated ecologically-integrated landscape classification and included the use of indicator species such as the Grizzly Bear, were conducted prior to and during the early stages of development. The results of these studies, along with the information gathered from the public consultation, historical and cultural studies and engineering specifications formed the basis for the route selection. Watercourses presented particular challenges during pipeline construction. The pipeline right-of-way (RoW) intercepted 26 small water runs and 19 creeks. Fishery and water quality issues were identified as important issues in the lower Coxhill Creek and Jumpingpound Creeks. As a result, Jumpingpound Creek was directionally drilled at two locations and all other watercourses were open-cut using low-impact techniques. To minimize new RoW clearing, substantial portions of the pipeline were placed in the ditch of the existing road. Husky attributes the success of this project to planning, broad community input and the co-operation and buy-in by the project management team and construction companies.

Abstract:

Abstract This paper examines the possibility of a new toothed belt construction to run in various pulley-types. The measurements from a laboratory dynamometer test stand show the belt life under special test conditions by use of HTD-, STPD- and RPP-pulleys, each with an angle of wrap of 180°. In case of locked center distance the increase of torque causes tooth climbing until belt jumping occurs. The pretension was brought into line with the torque each time the torque was increased and the jumping limit torque was determined. From literature it is expected that the results for the behavior of the HTD- and the RPP-pulley are similar. Another parameter to describe the quality of motion is the noise. Here sound power is a very effective descriptor of how noisy an object is. It was determined from sound intensity measurements for HTD- and STPD-pulleys. The ratio of the toothed belt drive used for the noise measurement was 0.63.

Abstract:

Manufacturers answered to the global competition rise by increasing the efficiency of their development process by substituing the hardware tests with their virtual counterpart. Following the same idea, in this paper, the introduction of the virtual prototyping technique in the design of a complex robotic leg is proposed. The novelty of this work is double: the first motivation lies on the characteristic of the mechanism, since it is a FLEXible jumping LEG; the second one, instead, regards to the introduction of methods well known in other research field but rarely used in robotics. This paper describes the whole design process, while the assembly of the physical prototype, the control development and the experimental tests will be matters of future works.

Abstract:

We have developed a new single-laser/rf sideband technique to provide accurate frequency guiding of a tunable cw dye laser. A high efficiency, broadband electrooptic modulator produces rf sidebands on a portion of the laser output. One filtered sideband is presented and locked to the resonance of a stable optical reference cavity using the output error signal to servo control the laser frequency. Thus computer-programmed changes of the rf source frequency are directly transferred onto the laser’s carrier frequency. Drifts in the cavity are measured (and corrected) when scanning the laser over an atomic resonance by periodically relocating the center of the atomic line relative to the cavity. Computer-feedforward tuning of the laser and on/off switching of the servo locks allow frequency jumping to another resonance, perhaps many reference cavity orders away. (The FSR itself can be measured very accurately with rf sideband techniques.) We measured isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings in the Hg (63P2–73S1) transition at 546.2 nm. These frequency intervals (from 850 MHz to 32 GHz) were measured with 2 × 10−3 linewidth accuracy, e.g., ~50 kHz for adjacent isotopes.

Abstract:

It has been shown that saccades play an important role in visual tasks, but they do not simply improve resolution of the display. To understand their role, I studied not only the way in which texture perception benefits from saccades, but also the patterns of saccades that are most beneficial. The displays (55) consisted of 1515 randomly oriented T's and L's. The T's formed a random polygonal shape (target) in the central 24 of the display. Eye movements were recorded while subjects estimated both the size and the shape of the target and were under instructions to (1) SCAN the display with saccades or (2) maintain the line of sight in the center without saccades (STAY). The results are as follows: (1) SCAN performance improved with increasing display duration; (2) STAY performance did not improve with increasing display duration longer than 2 s; (3) scanning improved performance for 5 s durations; (4) scanning improved the ability to detect texture patterns; (5) retinal image transients, created by flickering (2 Hz) or jumping (0.5 Hz, 15 ft. [4.57 m] peak-to-peak amplitude) the display, improved performance somewhat for size discrimination but not for shape discrimination; (6) boundary scanning was more beneficial for discrimination than other scanning patterns.

Abstract:

Milling efficiency is hampered by excessive tool vibrations that negatively impact the work-piece quality. This is more of a concern in micro-milling where sudden tool breakage occurs before the operator can adjust cutting parameters. Due to different chip formation mechanisms in micro-milling, an increased tool-radius to feed-rate ratio, and higher spindle speeds, micro-milling is a highly non-linear process which can produce multiple and broadband frequencies which increase the probability of tool failure. Micro-milling is studied through the development and analysis of a 3-D nonlinear micro-milling dynamic model. A lumped mass, spring, damper system is assumed for modeling the dynamic properties of the tool. The force mechanism utilized is a slip-line field model that provides the advantages of being highly dynamic by accounting for the constantly changing effective rake angle and slip-line variables. Accurate prediction of the chip thickness is important in correctly predicting the dynamics of the system since the force mechanism and its variables are a function of the chip thickness. A novel approach for calculating the instantaneous chip thickness which accounts for the tool jumping out of the cut and elastic recovery of the work-piece is presented. The effective rake angle and helical angle is accounted for resulting in a 3-D micro-milling model. The model is shown to resolve the high frequency force components that are seen in experimental data available in literature. Also, exciting the system at various spindle speeds results in dynamic states of motion that negatively impact the process through increased vibration amplitude and a broad frequency bandwidth.

Abstract:

As was recently demonstrated1 using highly efficient fluorescence excitation spectroscopy with N.A. = 0.98 collection optics, single molecules of pentacene in a p-terphenyl crystal can be detected with signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) as high as 30 in a 1 -Hz bandwidth at low temperatures. As a result, it has become possible to study the electronic absorption spectra of individual impurity molecules in solids in great detail. Our measurements include precise determination of the lifetime-limited linewidth and the temperature dependence of the optical dephasing, both of which agree with earlier measurements on large assemblies of molecules. Surprisingly, it was also found that some molecules absorbing in the wing of the inhomogeneous line change their absorption frequency with time in a random fashion. This spectral jumping behavior (which was quite unexpected in the crystalline p-terphenyl matrix but reminiscent of amorphous systems) is termed spectral diffusion and is thought to be caused by an instability in the local environment of the single pentacene absorbers that is driven by phonons present at 1.5 K. The experiments revealed that the jumps in frequency space in general are not restricted to occur between a small number of accessible states. In fact, the spectral diffusion processes observed are very rich and complex and range from discontinuous jumps between several states to quasicontinuous wandering in frequency space.
