Full textHow the jewish child from a parisian jewish school perceives the non-jews gentiles? how he sees the jew within his relationship with the gentiles? how he sees the gentiles within his relationship with the jews? how does the the image of the relationship between jews and gentiles develop? what factors influence the development of this image? the analysis of jewish children's drawings examine these questions. Five factors which influence the representing image were studied: the age of the child, his experiences with non-jews, the impact of religious practice, gender and parents' professions. Even though the research shows that the image of the relationship is individualistic for each child, the guideline is common: the child creats a practical and functional representation of the gentiles, through which he can live among them. Even though the internalization of collective jewish memories which are sad and bitter, the 9 and 10 year old child succeed in forming a viable image and relatively tolerant one of the gentiles

Full textThe incompatibility between civil and religious divorce laws, very often generates litigious situations where women are generally the first victims. These issues which question the entire matrimonial institution present a rather critical aspect for the future of traditional Judaism. The slow loss of interest in religious practice, particularly in religious divorce, thought to be archaic, very often penalizes women who, without their get, cannot obtain a complete divorce and are denied the right to marry again. Apart from its strictly religious aspect, the get involves a heavy load of affectivity. Indeed the individuals concerned, far too often take advantage of it and turn it into an ignominious blackmail. Aware of that situation since the turn of the 19th century, the rabbis never have ceased to look for alternatives to help women who have been denied the right to obtain their get However, despite their strong will and enormous effort they have not managed to solve the problem because the Jewish Laws of divorce stem from the Bible. Hence they are unalterable. In that context, we have asked ourselves how French Jewry, living in harmony with the modern world, dealt with the old divorce religious laws when they were faced with the end of a marriage. That very current issue the religious stake of which implies the entire French Jewish community has held our interest, and has led us to investigate on that very delicate topic. ■

Full textThe Haskalah Movement of Romania, (including Moldavia and Wallachia) appeared in the '40s of the 19th century. The first maskils, as well as the maskils of the first organized generation, were conservative "Galician maskils", having immigrated from Galicia. They fought for the modernization of Jewish education. The first modern Jewish school in Romania was opened in Bucharest in 1851. In the schools founded by the maskils, in association with the government, the curriculum was identical to that of the public schools, with the exception of Judaic subjects, taught by maskil teachers in German or Romanian, using methods already in use in Central European countries. The maskils also wrote in the Hebrew language. Later, in the '70s of the 19th century, more radical maskils joined the movement. Sephardic maskils, as well as Ashkenazic maskils, became active in their communities at this time. The Ashkenazic maskils used the Yiddish language for their propaganda, even though they were opposed to this language, considering it only a jargon. A Reform movement also existed in Romania, supported by some of the maskils. The second generation of maskils, many of whom wee born in Romania, made up the "generation of 1878". They struggled for the emancipation of the Jews, in addition to propagandizing for the modernization of Jewish education and Jewish life. The linguistic Romanization of the Jews was also extended. The Haskalah Movement in Romania drew to a close in the '80s-'90s of the 19th century, having been replaced by a trend toward assimilation on the one hand, and by Jewish nationalism on the other hand

Full textIf anti-semites traditionally explain the phenomenon of anti-semitism by characteristics inherent to jews themselves, researchers who have worked - particularly since the last war - on elaborating a theory on this phenomenon, have tried to explain it either through history (in particular through the history of the conflict between judaism and christianity), or through the action (or lack of action) of societies, or through the structure of the personality of the anti-semites themselves, or even through a combination of several of these factors. After having analysed, in the first part, these different theories in order to draw up a statement on this question, we intended, in the second part, to reconsider the problem by re-examining successively the process of creation and the process of working of such a phenomenon, by explaining it from the point of view of the social function which it fulfils. With that aim in mind, we have first used according to the systemic approach the elements of construction for a theoretic model of the scapegoat as a strategy of individual and social crises regulation. We intendes to show secondly that such a model could first be applied to the birth of anti-semitism in hellenistic egypt, that it accounted for the subsequent change from antijudaism into anti-semitism in medieval christendom, and that it provided at last a satisfactory key for deciphering modern ans contemporary historical events in france, germany and russia

Full textThe topic of my studies deals with the social treatment of the Jewish Algerian community during the years 1940-1943 and more precisely how the primary and secondary school children were treated, as they were excluded from school by the chief education officer in Algiers Georges Hardy. The first part of my researches is dedicated to how the Vichy government took control and power in the colony and how the anti-semitic rules were applied, aiming at excluding and marginalizing the Algerian Jewish population in the colonial society. The local political French authorities' behaviour is described(governors ,prefects of regions ,etc. . . ). The rules of exclusion and reject aroused feelings of protest and indignation among the jew community. The muslim algerian and european poulation reactions have been examined too. The second part of my study deals with the school children exclusion. I have carried out a survey questioning 60 people and met personally 12 people. The very conditions of this exclusion have been analyzed, as well as what became of the victims: most of them have been deeply influenced and emotionnaly bruised for ever. The third part deals with the private school education in Algeria. The various forms of this education have been dealt with as well as the legal conditions regarding the opening of these schools. A deep study of the teachers' legal and professional status in this alternate system of education has been completed too

Full textIn the Introduction, it is argued the status of language in Spinoza and the way in which it is interpretad the work. The first part, dedicated to ontology, contains four chapters: Spinozas critical analysis of the philosophers (chapter 1), the refutation of finalism (chapter 2), the theory of causality (chapter 3) and the centrality of the notion of order (chapter 4). The Appendix of the first part is about the concept of rule of life. The second part is dedicated to Spinozas conception of history, and comprises three chapters: the concept of multitudo (chapter 1), the work on the genesis of life in common (chapter 2) and the popular revolt (chapter 3). In the Appendix of the second parte it is discuted the notion of democracy. In the Conclusion it is attempted to show the way the concept of history in Spinoza is linked with the problem of equality/unequality.

Full textThis work traces the historical story of some charities, operating in Rome and Turin between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, through the archival papers that have so far remained unexplored. Attention was paid to the female role, a decisive result in shaping the activity of these bodies. The exclusion of women from community life enshrined in tradition did not prevent a gradual reduction of the traditional separation of roles during the phase of emancipation of religious minorities. This aspect is related to the need often felt by the woman to contribute to the economic support of the family. The increase in poverty was also the engine of the initiative of the bourgeois women who were increasingly involved in philanthropic activities, therefore work dimension and charity activities were the privileged paths from which the female made its entry into the social dimension. The history of the institutions, reconstructed mainly through the Pinqasim, is part of a network system of charity that takes on particular significance in the phase following Jewish emancipation. The philanthropic model underlying the educational intervention incorporates the traditional concept of tzedakah, but also fulfills the crucial function of preserving the bond of cohesion between the internal members of the community. The history of the associations is a starting point for understanding the economic and social situation of the Roman and Turin universities and its complex relations with the external reality

The present study proposes to debate the polyphony construct, in the Bakhtinian ethico aesthetic perspective, in dialogue with the approaches of juridical hermeneutics – of Heideggerian and Gadamerian matrix (Hermeneutic Critique of Law) –, bearing in mind the possibilities and limits of judicial interpretation and the importance of the implementation of a pluralistic and democratic judicial process, guaranteeing those involved a voice. It seeks, therefore, to think in what way the polyphonic Justice would contemplate the space to the diversity and difference, in consonance with the purposes of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 and with the paradigm of intersubjectivity. The methodological approach that underpinned the pursuit and achievement of the objectives was phenomenological-hermeneutic, without neglecting, however, the dialogical approach. The findings point to the construct of the model of the conducting-judge, crowning the polyphonic judicial process, whose procedural and substantial conditions are in accordance with the structure and functioning of legal institutions and whose ontological presuppositions find shelter in the Brazilian legal system.
Cohen, Dominique. "L'humour juif et la loi." Paris 7, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA070061.
Full textThe study of jewish stories and jokes and of jewish literature no doubt help us realize how tightly jewish humour is linked to the very existence of the jewish people and to the origin of judaism. Speaking of jewish humour, it seems fundamental to lay stress on the following : - the necessity to preserve the various points of view, each person perceiving the world trough his own experience. - the necessity to preserve the subjective truths, which leads to the refusal of any imperialism. - the necessity to preserve the distance between those various points of view, so as to allow the difference and thus, the desire, to exist. Jewish humour is in fact a proposed way to avoid both the tragical error and the comical one. The tragical and the comical situations are bound to be unbearable, since they lead to murder (of the other or of the self) anyone who tries to reach a perfect coincidence with the law. The jews propose the symbolic murder. . . Of himself as a jew, trying to save the desire

Full textThrough my study on Saint-Simonism in 19th-Century France, l pinpoint the socio-political and religious problems that emerged within the Saint-Simonian group in terms of conflicting gender discourses. L outline how some Jewish members of this group, who were also part of the Parisian Jewish intelligentsia, took steps towards developing their own understanding of gender. They were linked to some exponents of the Haskala, such as the Mendelssohns in Berlin. In 1831 and 1832, Saint-Simonian messianism inspired a utopia of salvation, whose principal theme was the idea of aIl God's people made incarnate in a single Jewish Woman, the "female messiah", a fictive figure who was actually worshiped by the Saint-Simonian sect. The female hypostasis shaped by some Jewish Saint-Simonians was incompatible with that conceived by the rest of the group, exemplifying the conflicts and the « structural amnesia » accompanying the socio-political entry of French and German Jewry into the Modern Age

Full textThe topic of this study is the process of assimilation of the jews as seen in the jewish-american novel between 1900 and 1940. First we have tried to find a definition for the words assimilation-loss of the original culture- and jew -any person that considers herself jewish or is considered by the others as jewish; then we explain the choice of our study period. Then we talk about the different waves of immigration which brought the jews to the unites states, the Sepaharades first in the 17th century, then the first wave of the Askhenazes coming from Germany in the 18th century and finally the jews from eastern Europe at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th for economical, social and political reasons. Then we explain why we chose novels written in english by jewish authors and we find out the common caracteristics of those novels-language, setting, family and society. We are then able to find five principal ways through which the jews thought it would be possible for then to assimilate and we define them as social ascencion via financial success, education, mariage, revolt against parents and revolution and we have tried to find out whether total or partial assimilation had been achieved this way
