Israel, Rebekah. "The American Politics of a Jewish Judea and Samaria." FIU Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/999.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation poses a set of six questions about one of the Israel Lobby’s particular components, a Potential Christian Jewish coalition (PCJc) within American politics that advocates for Israeli sovereignty over “Judea and Samaria” (“the West Bank”). The study addresses: the profiles of the individuals of the PCJc; its policy positions, the issues that have divided it, and what has prevented, and continues to prevent, the coalition from being absorbed into one or more of the more formally organized components of the Israel Lobby; the resources and methods this coalition has used to attempt to influence U.S. policy on (a) the Middle East, and (b) the Arab-Israeli conflict in particular; the successes or failures of this coalition’s advocacy and why it has not organized; and what this case reveals about interest group politics and social movements in the United States. This dissertation follows the descriptive-analytic case-study tradition that comprises a detailed analysis of a specific interest group and one policy issue, which conforms to my interest in the potential Christian Jewish coalition that supports a Jewish Judea and Samaria. I have employed participant observation, interviewing, content analysis and documentary research. The findings suggest: The PCJc consists of Christian Zionists and mostly Jews of the center religious denominations. Orthodox Jewish traditions of separation from Christians inhibit like-minded Christians and Jews from organizing. The PCJc opposes an Arab state in Judea and Samaria, and is not absorbed into more formally organized interest groups that support that policy. The PCJc’s resources consist of support and funding from conservatives. Methods include use of education, debates and media. Members of the PCJc are successful because they persist in their support for a Jewish Judea and Samaria and meet through other organizations around Judeo-Christian values. The PCJc is deterred from advocacy and organization by a mobilization of bias from a subgovernment in Washington, D.C. comprising Congress, the Executive branch and lobby organizations. The study’s results raise questions about interest group politics in America and the degree to which the U.S. political system is pluralistic, suggesting that executive power constrains the agenda to “safe” positions it favors.

Kirchheiner, Hanne Irene. "Revitalization in Judea : an anthropological study of the Damascus Document." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8822/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to gain a fresh perspective on the movement reflected in the Damascus Document by asking if it could be seen as a Revitalization Movement, a theoretical construct developed by the American anthropologist Anthony Wallace. Signs of a cultural identity crisis and the changes in society causing it are evident throughout the Damascus Document. By comparing the findings to Wallace's model, we understand that the movement could have developed as a reaction to a context of profound cultural changes. This study challenges the prominent view that the major crisis causing the rise of the movement was the Babylonian exile, as another paradigm related to Isa 7 .17, featuring Ephraim's departure from Judah, is alluded to in several ways. The princes of Judah are compared to Ephraim and depicted as those who depart, because they have adopted a foreign way of life, the way of the kings of Greece. While both paradigms were seen to represent collective memories used as warnings of judgment, the theme of division of the northern and the southern kingdoms in the past is portrayed as comparable to the current conflict in society.

Abstract:
Due to the low amount or unfavorable annual distribution of precipitation the exploration, allocation, sustainable exploitation, and protection of replenishable as well as fossile water resources are challanging tasks in semiarid and arid regions. Beside a few natural or artifcial surface water reservoirs the porous underground at the same time is the largest storage and transport medium for water and provides protection against evaporation and to a certain degree against surcficial introduction of contaminants. This situation is characteristic for the Near East and thus for the selected investigation areas, that are located in Israel and the West Bank, and that are subject of the conducted partail studies that are presented. The work focuses on three main subjects. On the one hand, it deals with the characterization of the young groundwater components of the discharge of four major springs of Wadi Qilt and Jericho, as well as of sampled deep wells of three important well fields. All of these objects discharge or abstract water from the Upper and Lower Judea Group Aquifer. With a thickness of about 750 m it is one of the most important groundwater reservoirs of the region and comprises mainly to varying degrees karstified and fractured limestones and dolomites. These formations underwent uplift during Senonian to Eocenian times forming a pair of double-plunging anticlinal structures (Hebron and Ramallah or Judea and Samaria Mountains, respectively) that are again subdivided into minor anticlines and synclines. The groundwater replenishment is restricted to the winter season between October and April, and to the crestal area of the mountains, where the otherwise covered aquifer rocks crop out. A strategy was developed to interpret the applied tracers for all locations in a similar way using a lumped parameter approach, which enables a direct comparison. On the other hand, the work investigates salinization processes in the Shallow Aquifer of Jericho and their discrimination. Potential sources for salinization are remnant brines that are activated to flow into the range of well extraction due to groundwater overexploitation, dissolution of salts, or formation waters from the Lisan formation. These layers represent the sediments of Lake Lisan, the Pleistocene precursor of the Dead Sea. A discrimination of the salinization mechanisms is important to develope reasonable measures to limit or lower the salt concentration in the affected wells. Consequently, the relevant measured but also potential main hydrochemical indicators and isotope tracers are identified. The large uncertainties with respect to the establishment of a well-founded water balance and to the insuffcient knowledge about the geology of the small-scale area of Jericho are discussed. Because the interpretation of the measured helium samples from the fractured and karstified aquifer of the Cretaceous Judea Group is limited, the dependencies of the He-4 accumulation in groundwater in an idealized dual-continuum aquifer are investigated with respect to the relation of the He-4 mass fluxes and the system response time to the varied parameters (groundwater head gradient, hydraulic conductivities, dispersivities, porosities) by means of a sensitivity analysis. Although the system response time is not a system variable as such it clearly turned out that knowledge about it may be an important information for the interpretation of He concentrations in groundwaters of non-stationary systems. To enhance the visual post-processing of the parameter sensitivity analysis an easily interpretable way of data presentation is introduced

Abstract:
J.-C. à l’an 70 ap.
The realm of Judea went through profound changes between the end of the 2nd century B.C and theyear 70 A.D. Facing the Hellenistic and Roman powers, Jewish society was going to keep its identity while losing its lighthouse : the Temple. From 66 A.D., the war against Rome revealed political, social and religious tensions. There were different Judaisms, not only one. More and more arrogant, sacerdotal aristocracy tried to maintain its influence at any price.A part of the population challenged the structure of society. These rebels, so much criticized by Flavius Josephus, were often to fight to defend an ideal combining a form of patriotism to Judaism

Amselem, Jacques. Thesis, Paris 8, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA080148/document.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the initial verse of the Book of Ruth, the story takes place during the period of the Judges. However, its place in the Hebrew Bible canon, where it is revealed in Writings (Ketuvim), as well as linguistic aspects of the text, has led scholars to believe that the book was composed during a late post-exilic period. The purpose of this study is to learn the development of the Book of Ruth and in particular, the political messages and customs of that precise period. Thanks to the conciseness of the story, an analysis in a laboratory-like environment is possible. The model that results from this study displays a very complex textual construction of several layers of writings and multiple authors. In turn, it enables one to observe various language styles scattered over a period of several centuries. Some of the language expressions are characteristic of Paleo-Hebrew and some are influenced by Talmudic Aramaic. There also appear to be logical inconsistencies within the narrative and reminders of a polytheistic cult. This research takes us on a journey through time that begins as a folktale of a Moabite woman in the land of Judea, probably from the turn of Royalty around the year 1000 BC. The journey halts unexpectedly during the seventh or sixth century BC, as its first writings appear during this period. It finally concludes during the fifth or fourth century BC, with the return to Zion from exile in Babylon, a period in which the Masoretic version of the Book of Ruth was likely written

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is verify the Jewish presence in various texts produced by Jorge Amado (1912-2001), focusing in his novels, also covering the two moments of his career. This will be approached through his worldview. As for the method, the analysis is based on trails/signs of the Jew in Amados works as the Jewish presence in his texts comes up more as reference or subject than representation. The analog approach is applied in this thesis. Trails/signs of the Jew in the texts function as the triggers for the analysis, in which all the elements, being central or peripheral, are in mutual influence. As for the results, the Jewish presence in Amados works is related to a monolithic view of the Jew. In general, Jewish traces/characters are linked to Communist militancy, as well as they are related to a mythical/prophetical level on which Jorge Amados worldview also is based. Authors style pays tribute to popular expressions, reverberating Jewish-Christian culture, with emphasis on the eschatological and soteriological thinking. As for the conclusion, the Jew in Amado works function as a metonymy, something that is related to both his ideological position and his worldview. Therefore there are a number of meanings in the Jewish presence in Amado: from subversion to revelation.

Abstract:
Clewlow, David Frederick. "Judeo-Spanish : an example from Rhodes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29498.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the Judeo-Spanish dialect through the analysis of an oral sample provided by two native speakers from Rhodes. A twenty-minute segment has been transcribed phonetically and incorporated into the thesis. A preliminary section provides the necessary historical, cultural and linguistic background for the analysis of the sample. Distinctive phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactical features of the informants1 speech are pointed out and their significance demonstrated both synchronically, in relation to Eastern Judeo-Spanish and modern Hispanic Romance, and diachronically, showing survival of old Spanish elements. In the conclusion, the writer states that the development of the dialect was the result of the unique sociological conditions prevailing in the Sephardic communities of the ottoman Empire and highlights both the historical continuity of Judeo-Spanish as well as its participation in the common heritage of Hispano-Romance. He notes the presence or lack of certain foreign elements in their speech and alludes to Westernization and their education on Rhodes. He mentions differences in their pronunciation. The writer concludes that the segment of the dialogue recorded and transcribed is representative of the distinctive features of Judeo-Spanish and that, as such, it is a good introduction to the dialect.

Abstract:
Contrary to the belief that the Carolingian Empire was a homogenous entity, Carolingian society was in fact characterized by its diverse ethnic groups, culture, and religion. As well as facing otherness within Europe, Carolingian rulers confronted very diverse populations along its empire’s boundaries: such as the Jews, Muslims, and Spaniards. This thesis concentrates particularly on the Jewish population at the time of the Carolingian Empire, between 750 and 900 AD. There are many articles referring to the Jewish population during that time period, however there is no focused systematic or methodological research on this minority population. Using a corpus of normative sources, this work presents an analysis on how secular and ecclesiastical authorities applied their legislation to the treatment of Jews or Judaism. In the first part, each source undergoes systematic analysis, thus leading to the compilation of a table that outlines the Christian authorities, (secular or ecclesiastic), guidelines on how to treat Jews and Judaism. The second part has the mission to define the place that this Jewish minority had within this Christian Carolingian society. It confronts the notions of the “real” Jew against the “imagined” or “imaginary” Jew or Judaism at that time period, as well as presenting Jeremy Cohen’s concept of the “hermeneutical Jew” which gave the Christian authorities the ability to adapt or change the Jewish image according to their other concerns. This thesis introduces the concepts of the “historic Jew” and that of the “political Jew” as the key to the place the Jews or Judaism had in legislative sources

This research was developed through a survey of works which were written between 1920 and 1940. It aims to identify elements and characters that belong to the Judaism or to the Jewish culture. At the same time, it covers the works written by Gilberto Freyre in the same period by analyzing the author\'s point of view on the Jewish participation in the Brazilian history. In order to better understand the research and Freyre\'s works, it was presented the picture of the presence of the jews in Brazil as well as the Brazilian literature (considering the \"Modernism\" and \"Regionalism\" as starting points).

Kinney, Anna Marie. "St. Jude Medical: ST Monitoring." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2010. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/253.

Full text
Abstract:
Myocardial infarction is the leading cause of death in the western world. Time is critical when treating patients with myocardial infarction. The major problem is that many patients who are symptomatic wait too long before seeking medical attention, and some patients have no symptoms at all. In order to improve patient outcome there needs to be a better way to diagnose myocardial infarction. One solution is the continuous monitoring of the ST-Segment of the intrinsic ventricular beat morphology, called the QRS complex. There have been many studies that show that there are detectable shifts of the ST-Segment during coronary occlusion. These shifts can be detected by implanted cardiac leads, like those used with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD). The St. Jude Medical algorithm called ST Monitoring was designed to continuously monitor the ST-Segments and detect when there has been a significant shift. This thesis describes the implementation of the St. Jude Medical ST Monitoring algorithm on the St. Jude Medical Unity ICD platform. The process involved working on the requirements, design, implementation, and tests in order to verify the algorithm. The project was successfully completed and received FDA approval for an IDE study in the US and CE Marking in Europe. The data collected from the patients in the IDE will give confidence that the algorithm can successfully identify ST-Segment shifts that lead to myocardial infarction. If this is shown then the ST Monitoring algorithm can be used to reliably notify patients that they are having a significant cardiac event and need to seek medical attention immediately.

Benaim, Annette. "Judeo-Spanish testimonies in sixteenth-century responsa." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.440495.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis identifies, compiles, transcribes, translates and analyses a previously unidentified corpus of literature: the Judeo-Spanish testimonies in the responsa of the sixteenth century. The main body of the thesis, the third chapter, presents a copy of each original text covering eighty-four responsa, a transcription into Latin characters, a translation into English and relevant notes mainly on the language. An evaluation of the relevant secondary literature is incorporated in Chapters I and 4. The first chapter discusses the aims of the thesis and also presents an overview of the responsa literature in the context of the sixteenth-century Ottoman Empire. The value of the Judeo-Spanish testimonies in terms of the insight they offer into the society, economy and religion of sixteenth-century Ottoman Jewry is described. The second chapter explains my research techniques, including problems encountered and decisions taken. It also lists the respondents, with brief bibliographic details, and the responsa in which Judeo-Spanish has been found. The chapter contains a guide to the transcription system used in the thesis that indicates the corresponding phonemes as well as the Spanish letters that represent each Hebrew graph. The last section in this chapter analyses the problems of textual transmission through the different editions. A discussion of the variations between the original and subsequent editions is presented through the examination of one sample text. The fourth chapter studies the Judeo-Spanish language employed in the responsa. The distinctive linguistic features of the language presented in the texts are described with reference to phonology, morphology and syntax. Borrowings by Judeo-Spanish from other languages are examined herewith and special attention is given to borrowings from Hebrew. The study of these texts from a linguistic perspective constitutes the main aim of the thesis.

Abstract:
Examination of anthroponymic material of Jews from Bialystok shows that surnames of typically nickname charakter include surnames describing man's behaviour, his character, faults and virtues as well as surnames alluding to his physical appearance or physical infirmity. They also include insulting surnames devised by clerks to humiliate. Other surnames made on the basis of an appellative lexis usually relate to biblical events, animal, plant and material symbols and metaphors or serve to hide identity. To establish their nickname nature, unequivocal information about motivation, choice and conferment of such names is necessary.

Abstract:
Consulting hand-written latin sources with information about the Jewish communities of the Kingdom of Aragon - specially those in the Aragon Kingdom Archive - of their articles, notary protocols “responsa”, and specialized biographic accounts has allowed me to get a very detailed look at the characteristics of jewish life, their day to day in the jewish communities, until the XV century. I have also been able to confirm that the singularity of the Jewish community of Monzon between the centuries XIV and XV, helps us to know and understand the happenings of that community, those around it, and for extension, the Aragon Kingdom between the centuries XII and XV. Translating medieval hebrew hand-written sources , the “responsa” from Rabii, “Sheelot u-teshubot”, documents in hebrew and other biographical works has allowed me to provide more historical data that complements what is already known, and to discover other details about everyday life. Livestiles are very influenced by the three human societies that coexisted, the religious influences, social realities, economic, artistic and cultural. Thus, a look, a sociological and historical study of the centuries XII_XV with special attention to the centuries XIV and XV. From the sources used one can get the relationship between Jews and Christiams, and through the Middle ages, this is a relationship of coexistence and persecution, that is, a relationship not without tensions.

Shah, Devanshi. "St. Jude Medical: Enhanced MICS (eMICS)." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2010. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/377.

Full text
Abstract:
Heart disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. The survival chances for patients with ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia reduces significantly as time passes without treatment and even after getting timely treatment recurring episode are common. These patients can benefit from an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) which can monitor heart rhythm and provide immediate treatment. Due to the ever changing physical conditions and disease progression, the ICD needs to collect diagnostic data as well as support programming by the physician. The ICD uses inductive telemetry and radio-frequency telemetry for the communication with the external devices such as a programmer or a monitor. Inductive telemetry uses less energy than RF telemetry but has a very short range of communication. In addition to inductive telemetry, the St. Jude Medical ICD supports 2.45 GHz band based asynchronized wakeup and 400 MHz MICS band based synchronized wakeup. The 2.45 GHz band based wakeup has limited wakeup range and the 400 MHz MICS based synchronized wakeup has limited availability for connection because it requires synchronization with the base station. The enhanced Medical Implant Communications Service (eMICS) algorithm is a firmware based algorithm which addresses the issues with other two wakeup schemes and provides fast, robust, and seamless wakeup. This thesis describes the design, implementation, and initial testing of eMICS algorithm on the Unity device platform in Technology Project Management (TPM) phase. The eMICS automated test tool developed at St. Jude Medical was used to test the eMICS algorithm under a controlled lab environment, typical home environment, typical hospital/clinic environment, and in the field. The project was successfully completed and transferred to Product Project Management (PPM) phase. However, the suggested duration of 60-90 seconds for sniff interval which will cause the least effect on the battery life was found unacceptable, and there is also a strong need for energy efficient hardware which draws minimal amount of current during each sniff. Therefore, St. Jude Medical is collaborating with the hardware vender to implement eMICS algorithm in the next version of hardware.
