Abstract:
Hegel next treats “The Religions of Spirit,” which consist of Judaism, and Greek and Roman polytheism. While the natural religions had conceptions of the divine that were closely associated with nature, the religions in this new group are characterized by a conception of the divine as spirit, that is, a self-conscious entity. Hegel thus begins his exploration with the God of Judaism. Chapter 8 provides a brief account of the state of Old Testament and Jewish Studies during Hegel’s time. Hegel’s analysis of the portrayal of Jehovah from the Old Testament is then examined in some detail. Hegel is critical of Judaism since he believes that the relation of Jehovah to his Jewish followers is not one of love but rather of tyrannical oppression. For this reason, he claims, this religion stands in the way of the meaningful development of subjectivity and freedom.

Abstract:
No religion has emerged unchanged into the 21st century. Increasing secularization of Western governments has undermined the power of religious leadership and people’s values have changed. Lots of people have abandoned organized religion. ‘Judaism today’ examines the impact of postmodernist thinking in recent times on Judaism. World Jewry has found itself at the centre of two 20th-century events that have affected it in unique ways: the trauma of the Shoah, or Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Four areas in which Jewish thought has developed since the Second World War are considered: Zionism, Holocaust theology, God, and Feminism.
