Abstract:

Learning kanji (i.e., the Chinese characters utilized in the Japanese writing system) is unique for learners of Japanese who speak Chinese as their first language (L1) due to their ability to transfer their knowledge of L1 hanzi (i.e., the Chinese characters utilized in the Chinese writing system). The present study is a longitudinal investigation into the effects of affective variables and kanji growth on kanji learning utilizing the self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2002). L1 Chinese learners of Japanese as a second language (L2) responded to a questionnaire designed to measure eleven affective variables and took kanji tests three times over one academic semester (N = 229-340). In addition, interviews were conducted with 12 participants to further explore the affective variables influencing kanji learning. The data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate latent growth modeling, multiple regression analyses, and path modeling to answer six research questions. The results showed that: (a) there were no associations between the initial affective status and the initial kanji proficiency; (b) intrinsic motivation and introjected regulation exerted significant positive and negative influences on short-term kanji growth, respectively; (c) growth in kanji proficiency did not cultivate intrinsic motivation, nor did intrinsic motivation lead to growth in kanji proficiency; (d) perceived competence was significantly associated with both the initial status of intrinsic motivation and changes in intrinsic motivation; (e) perceived competence was not associated with either the initial level or the development of kanji proficiency; (f) perceived competence positively affected four variables, intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and mastery goals; (g) perceived autonomy led to lower amotivation and higher intrinsic motivation, but caused lower external regulation; (h) peers' positive influences positively affected all six variables, cultivating higher intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation, and mastery goals, as well as causing lower amotivation; (i) peers' negative influences led to lower identified regulation and higher amotivation, and higher introjected regulation, and; (j) attitudes toward L2 community/speakers did not influence any of the SDT kanji learning motivation and mastery goals. The results of the interview study revealed that (a) the participants felt various types of enjoyment in kanji learning, including intrinsic motivation-knowledge, intrinsic motivation-stimulation, and intrinsic motivation-accomplishment; (b) ideal L2 self guided intrinsic motivation; (c) introjected regulation was channeled by ought-to L2 self and feared L2 self, and; (d) feared L2 self was uniquely formulated as a result of the complex interactions of various factors such as pride as L1 hanzi knowledge holders and normative pressure from Chinese peers. Evidence gathered in research targeting English learners is not necessarily applicable to the learning and motivation for learning other languages. The present study contributes to a better understanding of the universality as well as the individuality of the roles of motivation in L2 learning.

Edith Cowan University. Community Services, Education And Social Sciences: School Of International, Cultural And Community Studies, 2006. http://adt.ecu.edu.au/adt-public/adt-ECU2006.0022.html.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinally how a child learner acquired verbal morpho-syntax in Japanese in a naturalistic second language (L2) context. Specifically the points of emergence for three verbal morpho-syntactic structures, namely verbal inflection, the V-te V structure and the passive/causative structure, were investigated within a framework of Processability Theory (PT) (Pienemann, 1998b). The subsequent development of these structures was also examined. Unlike earlier research about morpheme orders and developmental sequences in language acquisition which was criticised because of its apparent lack of theoretical underpinnings, Pienemann's Processability Theory (PT)(1998b) connects the processability of morpho-syntactic structure to linguistic theories. Pienemann also claims that this theory can be used to explain the acquisition of a wide range of morpho-syntactic structures and that it is typologically plausible and applicable to any language. In recent times PT has been extensively tested in a range of languages acquired as an L2, including German, English and Swedish (Pienemann, 1998b; Pienemann & Hakansson, 1999) and Italian and Japanese (Di Biase & Kawaguchi, 2002). The findings from these studies support this theory.

Following the acquisition criteria proposed by Pienemann (1998b), the current study analyses the points of emergence of verbal morpho-syntactic structures by a seven year old Australian boy who was acquiring Japanese as a second language (JSL) naturalistically. Data were collected through audio taping approximately 90 minute interactions between the child and other Japanese speakers at each of the 26 sessions over a one-year and nine month period. The task-based elicitation method was used to create as spontaneous interaction as possible between the child and his interlocutors.

Bellini, Marisa Utida. "Life Stories of Nikkeijin Seeking Better Opportunities: The Motivation of Brazilian Immigrants in Japan." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1033.

Full text
Abstract:
The immigration of Brazilian-Japanese to Japan has started as recently as the early 1980s as a result of an economic downturn in Brazil and labor shortages in Japan. In a recent study published by the Ministry of Justice in Japan, there are about 250,000 Brazilians currently working throughout Japan. Even though most of the Brazilians are second or third generation of Japanese descent, they are not fluent in Japanese, thus resulting in many cultural problems and misunderstandings. Some research has examined about the immigration of Brazilians (nikkeijin) to Japan, but none has investigated their acquisition of Japanese as a second language. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that motivate or unmotivate the nikkeijin in Japan to learn Japanese as a second language (JSL). This qualitative study shows the life experiences of four nikkeijin who arrived in Japan at different ages (8, 18, 25 and 42 years old). It is a very richly descriptive study about the experiences of nikkeijin learning JSL. Through interviews conducted over the Internet using Online Messenger and phone conversations, the researcher gathered information and data about their real life experiences learning the language and adapting to Japanese culture. The results of this study show how positive and negative life experiences of nikkeijin in Japan can affect their motivation to learn or improve their Japanese language skills. The age of arrival and the place of residence in Japan are also important factors that influence their experiences in Japan.

Against the background of principal-agent and transaction-cost theoretical considerations, this study addresses the question whether relational competencies relate to trust within cooperative relationships, taking into account also situational and personal factors. In its conclusion, the study presents an experimentally confirmed model (n = 282) that shows the strong causal relationship between relational competencies and trust allowing boundary-spanning agents to exert influence on the development and maintenance of complex cooperative relationships characterized by long-term objectives.

There are a lot of real estate agencies in Taiwan. Three of the biggest agencies are the “Hiyes Real Estate Agency”, “Newland Real Estate Agency”, and “JaySanLyn Real Estate Agency “(JSL)”. The JaySanLyn (JSL) is a 26years Real Estate company which supported by a lot of customers because of having good reputation by its responsibility and professional in Taiwan. The popularity and turnover had risen up straightly after the company had a really good start by having an impressive score on the case named “Back Office”. By having its unique way of customer targeting, and product positioning, JSL seized a lot of chance and good timing to promote those historical project, for instance, “The Palace” (仁愛帝寶) by the Hung Sheng Construction Company (宏盛建設), “MeHAS”(美河市) by the Radium Construction Company (日勝生建設), and JSL’s own Construction project “The Castle” (城上城). Every case on the above has their different conditions. For example, difficult timing, bad economic condition, bad location…etc. JSL turned all cases into gold by strengthening its advantage and avoid risks when promoting them, almost every cases are 100% sold by higher prices than its competitors’. With the Ministry of Education’s (the MOE) promotion of the second foreign language education in Twain, Japanese, as a second language, is therefore introduced into senior high education. Among various second foreign languages, Japanese seems to be senior high school students’ first choice, due to Japan’s geographical and economical relation with Taiwan and the Japanophilia trend in Taiwan. Although, in senior high schools, a second foreign language course is obligatory/elective (namely, a second foreign language is a obligatory subject but different foreign languages are provided for students to choose from), the learners’ learning willingness is comparatively lower in comparision with that of the learners in Japanese-related departments in colleges. In addition, according to the statistics published by the MOE, it is shown that there is a discrepancy in number of students taking Japanese as a second foreign language between the 1st semester and the 2nd semester; to be specific, the number of students taking Japanese is lower in the 2nd semester. Consequently, the present thesis is aimed at investigating and solving the learning problems the JSL senior high school students have and further providing an optimal pedagogical methodology to increase the students’ motivation to take Japanese as a second foreign language and prove the feasibility of Japanese language education in senior high schools if the MOE continue to promote it in the following ten years. Besides, the present thesis expects to provide inspirations for those intending to devote themselves to Japanese language education. The present thesis bases itself on the course information published by Department of Secondary Education, the MOE, from 2008 to 2009. The participants involve ten senior high schools that offer the most Japanese language courses in Taipei City and County. The methodology includes questionnaire and in-class observation. The major findings are as follows Learning problems by the students in public senior high schools. 1. The reasons for taking Japanese as a second foreign language: the internal motivation is stronger but the external one is weaker. 2. The courses are practice-oriented. 3. The image of Japanese is not positively boosted. 4. Syntax and vocabulary are the obstacles that the students find difficulties overcoming. 5. The attitude toward Japanese learning is negative. 6. It is commonly assumed that teaching hours are not enough. 7. The teaching materials cannot satisfy the learning needs. Learning problems by the students in private senior high schools. 1. The reasons for taking Japanese as a second foreign language: both the internal and the external motivation are stronger. 2. Learning needs focus on the development of each aspect. 3. The image of Japanese gradually becomes negative. 4. Syntax is the main obstacle to Japanese learning. 5. The attitude toward Japanese learning is comparatively positive. 6. Japanese-teaching teachers ‘course schedules are comparatively tight. 7. It is assumed that more and more Japanese courses can maximize Japanese language learning. At last, based on the conditions that prompt the formation of learning willingness and strengthen learning motivation, I propose some concrete strategies for Japanese language teaching. The present thesis is organized as follows. Chapter One is an introduction, providing the information about the background, the overall research goals, the selection of subjects and the methodology. Chapter Two is about the literature review, introducing the history of the second foreign language education in Taiwan and the design of a sample questionnaire for the present thesis by reviewing the previous studies on Japanese learning in senior high schools and referring to the questionnaire designs found in the related theses. Chapter Three deals with the analysis of the collected questionnaires. First, I give a brief introduction to the questionnaire content and divide the results obtained from the questionnaires into two groups for discussion, the students in public schools and the students in private schools. Subsequently, I identify the learning problems commonly found in these two groups. Chapter Four is intended to compare the in-class observation with the results obtained from the questionnaires. First, I will introduce the steps for administering the observation, and then identify the problems after the observation. Second, I investigate the differences discovered in the results between the questionnaires and the in-class observation. Chapter Five is the conclusion, summarizing the main points of each chapter and indicating some parts that go beyond the scope of the present study and require further research.

In this paper, we propose the use of Z as the formal notation to express Jack-son System Development (JSD) specifications where JSD is to serve as the mechanism to help the analysis of problem domains. A function process in JSD specifications is manifested by an operation schema. A model process is treated as an active entity that requires an operation on its data store to add a new instance to the collection of existing instances. The model is thus translated into a state schema, and its related are converted into the operation schemas with instances set that can be modified by the oper-ations. A structure diagram is transformed into a state transition diagram and then converted its Z specifications. Cardinality relationships between are translated into Z notations based upon the notion of rough merges. These are illustrated using the problem domain of System. The bringing together of diagrammatical and text elements of JSD specific-ations in Z notations offers two major benefits. First, JSD specifications can be seen both as a structuring mechanism that helps in deriving Z specific-ations, and as a preliminary that assists in ascertaining the clients Second, Z specifications make it easier to identify omissions or errors.

Abstract:
A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science in the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. June 11, 2017
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) started High Frequency Trading when their matching engine moved from London to Johannesburg in 2012. The study of market microstructure at the JSE is not possible without access to their matching engine. This dissertation investigates the challenges of studying market microstructure and describes the design and implementation of an open source matching engine. CoinTossX was developed as an open source low latency high throughput stock exchange. The software was developed in Java and used open source libraries. The software is tested using an 8-variate mutually-exciting Hawkes process to govern the times of coupled liquidity demand and supply events, while trade and quote prices and volumes are generated consistent with the event type. The testing showed that CoinTossX is able to support multiple clients, stocks and matching algorithms.

Stylized facts play a significant role in the testing whether models agree with known statistical anomalies and phenomena that occur in financial markets or not. Thus, we can use these stylized facts as a modelling tool or just to understand the general behavior of financial markets better. In the paper by Bouchaud et al in 2004 [1] we see the promotion of a new stylized fact that correlations in trade signs fail to die out, even after large lags. In fact, Bouchaud et al expressed the correlations as a slow power-law decay over trade ticks. In the results of our empirical study of JSE and BM&FBOVESP we find that the selected stocks show the this same power-law decay of correlations of trade signs. We also find that the stocks behave in a way which may allow for price manipulation at high enough trading rates as discussed by Gatheral [2].
