Abstract:
Two types of perennial wild rice, Australian Oryza rufipogon and a new taxon Jpn2 have been observed in Australia in addition to the annual species Oryza meridionalis. Jpn2 is distinct owing to its larger spikelet size but shares O. meridionalis-like morphological features including a high density of bristle cells on the awn surface. All the morphological traits resemble O. meridionalis except for the larger spikelet size. Because Jpn2 has distinct cytoplasmic genomes, including the chloroplast (cp), cp insertion/deletion/simple sequence repeats were designed to establish marker systems to distinguish wild rice in Australia in different natural populations. It was shown that the new taxon is distinct from Asian O. rufipogon but instead resembles O. meridionalis. In addition, higher diversity was detected in north-eastern Australia. Reproductive barriers among species and Jpn2 tested by cross-hybridization suggested a unique biological relationship of Jpn2 with other species. Insertions of retrotransposable elements in the Jpn2 genome were extracted from raw reads generated using next-generation sequencing. Jpn2 tended to share insertions with other O. meridionalis accessions and with Australian O. rufipogon accessions in particular cases, but not Asian O. rufipogon except for two insertions. One insertion was restricted to Jpn2 in Australia and shared with some O. rufipogon in Thailand.

Abstract:
Jianpiyifei II granule (JPYF II) is an oriental herbal formula used clinically in China to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities of JPYF II in a mouse model of COPD induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cigarette smoke (CS) and in RAW264.7 cells stimulated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Mice were given LPS via intratracheal instillation on days 1 and 15 and exposed to CS generated from 4 cigarettes/day for 28 days. The mice were treated with 0.75, 1.5, or 3 g/kg/d JPYF II by intragastric administration in low, middle, and high dose groups, respectively, for two weeks. RAW264.7 cells were stimulated by CSE and treated with JPYF II at doses of 12.5, 25, or 50 μg/mL. In the mouse model of LPS and CS-induced COPD, JPYF II decreased inflammatory cell counts in broncho alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), in addition to mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines and metalloproteinases (MMPs) in lung tissues. In addition, JPYF II elevated catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and reduced the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and IκBα and p65 phosphorylation and inflammatory cell infiltration in the lung tissues. In RAW264.7 cells stimulated with CSE, JPYF II inhibited the mRNA levels of inflammatory mediators and the phosphorylation of IκBα and p65. Our results suggest that JPYF II enhanced anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities in a mouse model of COPD induced by LPS and CS and in RAW264.7 cells stimulated with CSE via inhibition of the NF-κB pathway.

Abstract:
Juvenile ossifying fibromas (JOFs) are a rare group of fibro-osseous lesions, typically of odontogenic origin. Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is one variant, that is, histopathologically distinguished by spherical ossicles resembling psammoma bodies. JPOF tumours are most commonly found in craniofacial skeletal structures and can be locally aggressive. Thus, early management by complete surgical excision is crucial for good outcomes, although recurrence is still possible. Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) formation has been reported with JOF lesions, but less commonly with the JPOF variant. We describe an unusual case of JPOF that presented in the calcaneus with secondary ABC formation.

Abstract:
When compared to independent harmonic or stochastic excitation, there exist relatively few methods to model the response of non-linear systems to a combination of deterministic and stochastic vibration despite the likelihood of harmonic oscillations containing noise in realistic applications. This paper uses the Duffing oscillator to illustrate how the joint probability density function (JPDF) of the displacement and velocity responds to this form of excitation. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to generate the JPDF which was observed, in general, to spread around the trajectory that would be observed if only deterministic excitation was present. In the deterministic chaotic case, the JPDF is known to be a diffuse chaotic attractor when noise is present. This paper assesses the ability of a useful class of methods, global weighted residual methods, to produce the geometrically complex JPDF responses produced from harmonic and white noise excitation. A technique using a JPDF in the form of a Gram–Charlier type C series was found to produce accurate results, although the method fails due to ill-conditioning as the shape of the JPDF required by the dynamics becomes too complex.

Abstract:
Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a rare benign osseous tumor, usually presenting in the midface. There are many similarities in location, presentation, and radiographic appearance between fibrous dysplasia (FD) and JPOF. Awareness of this entity is important for craniofacial surgeons, as surgical timing and intraoperative management differ between these tumors. Findings that should raise suspicion of JPOF preoperatively include rapid growth, a shell of cortical bone surrounding the lesion, and clearly demarcated borders of the lesion on imaging, as opposed to a gradual transition between normal and abnormal bone. Definitive excision is the treatment of choice, and earlier surgery may provide better results by addressing the lesion at the smallest size possible. In contrast to FD, JPOF is not known to “burn out,” so there is minimal benefit to be gained from delay. We present a summary of the evidence for diagnosis and treatment of JPOF as well our experience with JPOF in an 11-year-old female who was initially diagnosed with FD. We aim to draw attention to the similar presentations of these entities so the reader will be able to more accurately manage these patients.

Abstract:
Wild rice relatives having the same AA genome as domesticated rice (Oryza sativa) comprise the primary gene pool for rice genetic improvement. Among them, O. meridionalis and O. rufipogon are found in the northern part of Australia. Three Australian wild rice strains, Jpn1 (O. rufipogon), Jpn2, and W1297 (O. meridionalis), and one cultivated rice cultivar Taichung 65 (T65) were used in this study. A recurrent backcrossing strategy was adopted to produce chromosomal segment substitution lines (CSSLs) carrying chromosomal segments from wild relatives and used for trait evaluation and genetic analysis. The segregation of the DNA marker RM136 locus on chromosome 6 was found to be highly distorted, and a recessive lethal gene causing abortion at the seed developmental stage was shown to be located between two DNA markers, KGC6_10.09 and KGC6_22.19 on chromosome 6 of W1297. We name this gene as SEED DEVELOPMENT 1 (gene symbol: SDV1). O. sativa is thought to share the functional dominant allele Sdv1-s (s for sativa), and O. meridionalis is thought to share the recessive abortive allele sdv1-m (m for meridionalis). Though carrying the sdv1-m allele, the O. meridionalis accessions can self-fertilize and bear seeds. We speculate that the SDV1 gene may have been duplicated before the divergence between O. meridionalis and the other AA genome Oryza species, and that O. meridionalis has lost the function of the SDV1 gene and has kept the function of another putative gene named SDV2.

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion typically associated with the jaw, paranasal region, or orbit. However, JPOF may also originate from the skull base and locally invade the cranium. In published reports, intracranial JPOFs constitute only a small percentage of cases, and therefore it is not known whether more aggressive behavior typifies this distinct population of JPOFs compared with those in other locations. Nevertheless, JPOF histopathology is characterized by a number of active processes, including cystic transformation, that may precipitate violation of skull base boundaries. In the following article, the authors present a case of skull base JPOF that underwent cystic expansion in a young girl, produced a focal neurological deficit, and was resolved using a staged surgical approach.

Abstract:
This paper details an extension of a Java parallel programming framework – JPLF. The JPLF framework is a programming framework that helps programmers build parallel programs using existing building blocks. The framework is based on {\em PowerLists} and PList Theories and it naturally supports multi-way Divide and Conquer. By using this framework, the programmer is exempted from dealing with all the complexities of writing parallel programs from scratch. This extension to the JPLF framework adds PLists support to the framework and so, it enlarges the applicability of the framework to a larger set of parallel solvable problems. Using this extension, we may apply more flexible data division strategies. In addition, the length of the input lists no longer has to be a power of two – as required by the PowerLists theory. In this paper we unveil new applications that emphasize the new class of computations that can be executed within the JPLF framework. We also give a detailed description of the data structures and functions involved in the PLists extension of the JPLF, and extended performance experiments are described and analyzed.

Abstract:
✓ Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a benign fibroosseous lesion predominantly arising within the paranasal sinuses in children and young adults. Neurocranial occurrence is exceedingly rare and a location within the neurocranial portion of the temporal bone has not been described. The authors report on one case of sinonasal JPOF secondarily extending into the cranial cavity and three cases primarily affecting the neurocranial bones to increase clinical awareness of this uncommon tumor, which may be easily mistaken for meningioma. Moreover, the absence of activating missense mutations of the GNAS1 gene in two cases strongly argues against a relationship between JPOF and fibrous dysplasia.

Abstract:
Background: Norepinephrine and glutamate are among several neurotransmitters implicated in the neuropathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Glia deficits have also been demonstrated in people with MDD, and glia are critical modulators of central glutamatergic transmission. We studied glia in men with MDD in the region of the brain (locus coeruleus; LC) where noradrenergic neuronal cell bodies reside and receive glutamatergic input. Methods: The expression of 3 glutamate-related genes (SLC1A3, SLC1A2, GLUL) concentrated in glia and a glia gene (GFAP) were measured in postmortem tissues from men with MDD and from paired psychiatrically healthy controls. Initial gene expression analysis of RNA isolated from homogenized tissue (n = 9-10 pairs) containing the LC were followed by detailed analysis of gene expressions in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes (n = 6-7 pairs) laser captured from the LC region. We assessed protein changes in GFAP using immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting (n = 7-14 pairs). Results: Astrocytes, but not oligodendrocytes, demonstrated robust reductions in the expression of SLC1A3 and SLC1A2, whereas GLUL expression was unchanged. GFAP expression was lower in astrocytes, and we confirmed reduced GFAP protein in the LC using immunostaining methods. Limitations: Reduced expression of protein products of SLC1A3 and SLC1A2 could not be confirmed because of insufficient amounts of LC tissue for these assays. Whether gene expression abnormalities were associated with only MDD and not with suicide could not be confirmed because most of the decedents who had MDD died by suicide. Conclusion: Major depressive disorder is associated with unhealthy astrocytes in the noradrenergic LC, characterized here by a reduction in astrocyte glutamate transporter expression. These findings suggest that increased glutamatergic activity in the LC occurs in men with MDD.

Abstract:
This work deals with evaluating the effectiveness of a new verification algorithm called slice--n--dice. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of slice--n--dice, a vector clock POR was implemented to compare it against. The first paper contained in this work was published in ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes and discusses the implementation of the vector clock POR. The results of this paper show the vector clock POR performing better than the POR in Java Pathfinder by at least a factor of two. The second paper discusses the implementation of slice--n--dice and compares it against other verification techniques. The results show that slice--n--dice performs better than the other verification methods in terms of states explored and runtime when there is no error in the program or little thread interaction is needed in order for the error to manifest.

Phillips, Michael James. "A random matrix model for two-colour QCD at non-zero quark density." Thesis, Brunel University, 2011. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5084.

Full text
Abstract:
We solve a random matrix ensemble called the chiral Ginibre orthogonal ensemble, or chGinOE. This non-Hermitian ensemble has applications to modelling particular low-energy limits of two-colour quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD). In particular, the matrices model the Dirac operator for quarks in the presence of a gluon gauge field of fixed topology, with an arbitrary number of flavours of virtual quarks and a non-zero quark chemical potential. We derive the joint probability density function (JPDF) of eigenvalues for this ensemble for finite matrix size N, which we then write in a factorised form. We then present two different methods for determining the correlation functions, resulting in compact expressions involving Pfaffians containing the associated kernel. We determine the microscopic large-N limits at strong and weak non-Hermiticity (required for physical applications) for both the real and complex eigenvalue densities. Various other properties of the ensemble are also investigated, including the skew-orthogonal polynomials and the fraction of eigenvalues that are real. A number of the techniques that we develop have more general applicability within random matrix theory, some of which we also explore in this thesis.

In this paper, the impact of the correlation on the performance of multiple-cell SS-CDMA cellular systems over correlated fading channels is investigated. A new closed-form formula for the joint probability density function (joint pdf) of the diversity combiner with arbitrary correlation coefficients in terms of the generalized Laguere polynomial and the new expressions of average bit-error rate (BER) for the MC-CDMA system are given in this paper. The results demonstrate that the BER is significantly dependent on the correlation characteristic of diversity branching for multiple-cell environments.

Abstract:
The formalization of higher education did not follow the speed and pace of journalism as a profession. The first step in this direction was given by Columbia University, in the United States of America, in 1912, and marks the beginning of journalism education around the world. In Portugal, it was only after the re-conquest of freedom of expression that the first degree in the area was born in 1979, at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. While higher education institutions multiplied the offer and affirmed themselves as the main sources of training for future journalists, the debate about the content of the training appropriate to exercise the profession in full reignited: some defended a formation based on theoretical bases and others called the attention to more investment in practice. However, higher education institutions have found a way to reconcile both sides of the issue: journalism labs. This dissertation intends to contemplate the journalistic experiences and practices in an academic context and to contribute to a reflection on the laboratory dimension of journalism education that is being conducted in Portugal.

Abstract:
In the present work we study opportunities of mapping the XML data into relational systems. In the first part we describe basic terminology used in this work and subsequently also basic techniques for mapping XML data into the relational database. In the next part we engaged in theoretical methods like MXM and ShreX, which were proposed on premises of a university or by a research group. In the third part we describe mapping methods, that are used in some commercial systems like Oracle, DB2 and MS SQL. In the whole second half of this work we propose a new mapping method (XRM), which bring in several new features, while the origin positive features are kept. At the end we analyze the prototype implementation of the proposed mapping method.

AbstractThis introduction summarizes chapters of Part II. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_9, Yamamoto (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:88–96, 2018) has compared between the street method, the asset valuation adopted for the imposition of property tax in Japan, and the computer-assisted mass appraisal (CAMA) method generally adopted in North America focusing on education and training of valuators. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_10, Yamazaki (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:97–101, 2018) argues that one of the major causes for relatively low density use of land in the city in Japan is the land tax system. He focuses on property tax and examines defects of the tax from view of economist. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_11, Kobayashi (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:129–138, 2018), taking an actual example, has examined difference between precise legal interpretation of ‘exemption from real estate acquisition tax due to purpose of use’ and taxation practices conducted by local administrative bodies. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_12, Shirakawa and Okoshi (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:88–96, 2017) have shown that the real estate companies were committed to transactions as dual agencies to whatsoever degree, and analyzed attributes of real estate brokerage companies which are able to be dual agencies and how such dual agency affects contract price. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_13, Ueno (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:97–105, 2017) has analyzed impacts of the macroeconomic conditions on the land price gradient curves which are estimated using real estate data of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area in 1970, 1976, 1985, 1988, 1994, 2008, 2010, and 2016. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_14, Komatsu (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:110–118, 2017) has analyzed impacts that refurbishment of existing apartment has on possible increase in rent using the multinomial probit model and the Tobit model. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_15, Hanazato (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:119–128, 2017) has shown that around 90% of condominium reconstruction cases are predictable using the estimated discriminant function in terms of objective real estate data only. In Chap. 10.1007/978-981-15-8848-8_16, Ota et al. (Jpn J Real Estate Sci 31:109–119, 2018) have analyzed determinants of rent for rental house, office, and shop within 10-min walking distance from Shibuya Station in Tokyo. Multiple regression analyses are conducted and have shown that space syntax (SS) measures (Hillier and Hanson, The Social Logic of Space. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1984) significantly affect rent as well as conventional location attributes.

Key changes include a modular, extensible design, and Java 11 support.Java 11 brought with it fundamental changes in the language and its runtime, in particular, a new modular library system, different compilation of string expressions to bootstrap methods, and changes in many internal interfaces that allow access to the loaded code and the virtual machine state. These changes required numerous adaptations in JPF to ensure a successful compilation and correct behavior under Java 11.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the kànhuà technique developed by the Chinese Línjì (Jpn.: Rinzai) master Dàhuì Zōnggǎo (1089-1163) that became a widespread form of meditation in East Asian Zen. Kànhuà meditation focuses on the keyword or “punch line” (Ch.: huàtóu, Jpn.: watō, Kor.: hwadu) of puzzling Chán “encounter dialogues” (or kōan stories) associated with past Chán (Zen) masters. Dàhuì insisted on a sudden breakthrough enlightenment and considered kànhuà meditation an alternative to a dead-end, no-enlightenment, seated meditation that he associated with the rival Cáodòng (Jpn.: Sōtō) tradition of Chán. The paper further explores four innovations in kànhuà meditation during the centuries after Dàhuì: the use of kànhuà meditation to calm the mind; a greater emphasis on doubt; the integration of Pure Land practice into the kànhuà technique; and the notion that the huàtóu could be called out aloud. However, in spite of such changes kànhuà Chán stayed close to Dàhuì’s vision.

Abstract:
The Jungian personality framework (JPF) was developed by Katherine Briggs and Isabelle Myer Brigg and is based on the pioneering work of the eminent Swiss psychiatrist/psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Jung observed that no matter what the field of human endeavor with which he was familiar—art, history, literature, psychology, etc.--the same basic differences in outlook emerged repeatedly. They represented the fundamental differences between how different people viewed any situation, field of human knowledge, and/or practice.

This paper is a comparative study of Hartshorne's neoclassical reconsideration of the notion of the Absolute based on his Whiteheadian vision of the divine relativity, and Nishida's attempt at redefining the same notion against the background of what he calls the philosophy of "place" (Jpn., basho) of absolute Nothingness or Buddhist Emptiness. By reconsidering the notion of the Absolute, Hartshorne has come up with the standpoint of "Surrelativism," and Nishida's attempt has resulted in the standpoint of "absolute dialectic as guided by the principle of the self-identity of absolute contradictions."

Abstract:
The development of low emission aero engine combustors strongly depends on the availability of accurate and efficient numerical models. The prediction of the interaction between two-phase flow and chemical combustion is one of the major objectives of the simulation of combustor flows. In this paper, predictions of a swirl stabilized model combustor are compared to experimental data. The computational method is based on an Eulerian two-phase model in conjunction with an Eddy Dissipation (ED) and a presumed-shape-PDF (JPDF) combustion model. The combination of an Eulerian two-phase model with a JPDF combustion model is a novelty. It was found to give good agreement to the experimental data.

Abstract:
The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of axially staged injection of methane in the vitiated air cross flow in a two stage combustion chamber on the formation of NOX for different momentum flux ratios. The primary cylindrical combustor equipped with a low swirl air blast nozzle operating with Jet-A liquid fuel generates vitiated air in the temperature range of 1473–1673 K at pressures of 5–8 bar. A methane injector was flush mounted to the inner surface of the secondary combustor at an angle of 30°. Oil cooled movable and static gas probes were used to collect the gas samples. The mole fractions of NO, NO2, CO, CO2 and O2 in the collected exhaust gas samples were measured using gas analyzers. For all the investigated operating conditions, the change in the mole fraction of NOX due to the injection of methane (ΔNOX) corrected to 15% O2 and measured in dry mode was less than 15 ppm. The mole fraction of ΔNOX increased with an increase in mass flow rate of methane and it was not affected by a change in the momentum flux ratio. The penetration depth of the methane jet was estimated from the profiles of mole fraction of O2 obtained from the samples collected using the movable gas probe. For the investigated momentum flux ratios, the penetration depth observed was 15 mm at 5 bar and 5 mm at 6.5 and 8 bar. The results obtained from the simulations of the secondary combustor using a RANS turbulence model were also presented. Reaction modeling of the jet flame present in a vitiated air cross flow posed a significant challenge as it was embedded in a high turbulent flow and burns in partial premixed mode. The applicability of two different reaction models has been investigated. The first approach employed a combination of the eddy dissipation and the finite rate chemistry models to determine the reaction rate, while the presumed JPDF model was used in the further investigations. Predictions were in closer agreement to the measurements while employing the presumed JPDF model; this model was also able to predict some key features of the flow as the change of penetration depth with the pressure.
