Abstract:
OBJECTIVEJackson-Pratt drains (JPDs) are commonly employed in pediatric craniofacial reconstructive surgery (CRFS) to reduce postoperative wound complications, but their risk profile remains unknown. Perioperative blood loss and volume shifts are major risks of CFRS. The goal of this study was to evaluate the risks of JPD usage in CFRS, particularly with regard to perioperative blood loss, hyponatremia, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative wound complications.METHODSThe authors performed a retrospective review of data obtained in pediatric patients who underwent CFRS at a single institution, as performed by multiple surgeons between January 2010 and December 2014. Data were gathered from patients who did and did not receive JPDs at the time of surgery. Outcome measures were compared between the JPD and no-JPD groups.RESULTSThe overall population 179 pediatric patients: 128 who received JPDs and 51 who did not. In their analysis, the authors found no significant differences in baseline patient characteristics between the two groups. The average JPD output over the first 48 hours was 222 ± 142 ml. When examining the immediate preoperative to immediate postoperative time period, no significant differences were noted between the groups with regard to the need for blood transfusion or changes in hemoglobin, hematocrit, or serum sodium levels. These differences were also not significant when examining the 48-hour postoperative period. Finally, no significant differences in hospital length of stay, ICU length of stay, or emergency department visits at 60 days were noted between the two groups.CONCLUSIONSIn this retrospective study, the use of JPDs in pediatric CFRS was not associated with an increased risk of serious perioperative complications, although the benefits of this practice remain unclear.

Abstract:
In parallel with the prevalence metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common chronic liver disease in most countries. It features a constellation of simple steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. There are no approved drugs for effective management of NAFLD and NASH. Jianpi Huoxue formula (JPHX) mainly consists of Atractylodes macrocephal(Baizhu), Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), Rasux Paeonia Alba (Baishao), Rhizoma Alismatis (Zexie), and Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis (Wuweizi), which may have beneficial effects on NAFLD. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of JPHX on NAFLD.A NAFLD model was induced by methionine-choline-deficient food (MCD) in Wistar rats and orally administered with simultaneous JPHX, once a day for 8 weeks. Hepatocellular injury, lipid profile, inflammation, fibrosis, and apoptosis were evaluated. The results showed that JPHX significantly decreased the abnormal serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels compared with the MCD model (P<0.05). Furthermore, JPHX protected MCD diet-fed rats from accumulation of hepatic triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC). Histological examination demonstrated that JPHX noticeably normalized the NAFLD activity score (NAS). Moreover, JPHX ameliorated liver inflammation by decreasing TNF-αlevels and reduced collagen and matrix metalloproteinases in MCD diet-fed rats. In addition, JPHX prevented rats from MCD-induced cellular apoptosis, as suggested by TUNEL staining, and suppressed the activation of caspase 3 and 7 proteins. JPHX also inhibited the phosphorylation of JNK. In conclusion, JPHX exhibited a hepatoprotective effect against NAFLD in an MCD experimental model.

Abstract:
When compared to independent harmonic or stochastic excitation, there exist relatively few methods to model the response of non-linear systems to a combination of deterministic and stochastic vibration despite the likelihood of harmonic oscillations containing noise in realistic applications. This paper uses the Duffing oscillator to illustrate how the joint probability density function (JPDF) of the displacement and velocity responds to this form of excitation. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to generate the JPDF which was observed, in general, to spread around the trajectory that would be observed if only deterministic excitation was present. In the deterministic chaotic case, the JPDF is known to be a diffuse chaotic attractor when noise is present. This paper assesses the ability of a useful class of methods, global weighted residual methods, to produce the geometrically complex JPDF responses produced from harmonic and white noise excitation. A technique using a JPDF in the form of a Gram–Charlier type C series was found to produce accurate results, although the method fails due to ill-conditioning as the shape of the JPDF required by the dynamics becomes too complex.

To reduce the computational complexity of JPDA and resolve closely-spaced targets efficiently, decompose JPDA into parallel PDA algorithms without regarding the correlation of targets. For a target, measurements are all clutter except the ones originated from itself. The PDA algorithm to track every single target with fixed covariance of states. When targets got closed within thick clutter, try to avoid coalescence and reduce complexity of association, maintaining the independence of targets through neglecting the assignment association model of measurement-to-track which used to happen once targets gates got overlapped. Simulations give arguments that parallel PDA has a better performance than JPDA in tracking closely-spaced targets.

Abstract:
Since the 2006 bidding rounds, exploration activity in both the Timor-Leste exclusive offshore area (TLEA) and joint petroleum development area (JPDA) has progressed steadily. Within the JPDA, exploration remains largely focussed in the Jurassic-age Plover and Elang Sandstone formations in the Flamingo Trough-Sahul Syncline region. Over 700 MMbbls of liquids and 4Tcf of gas have been discovered in this western region of the JPDA, including the 2008 Kitan oil field discovery by Eni, which is currently scheduled for production in 2011. Recent seismic survey activity within the JPDA by PSC holders Petronas and Oilex has resulted in the combined acquisition of 2,800 square kilometres of new 3D data. These surveys, together with on-going re-evaluation of existing well data by these companies, has helped further refine the knowledge of petroleum systems within the JPDA, in preparation for drilling campaigns scheduled for late 2009 and early 2010. Within the TLEA, multi-client seismic surveys undertaken in 2005, together with on-shore academic research, indicates that the prospective Mesozoic sequence of the Northern Bonaparte Basin underlies the Timor Trough, greatly enhancing the petroleum prospectivity of this region. Further detailed 2D and 3D seismic surveys in the TLEA have been recently completed by PSC holders Reliance Exploration and Eni. The first wells to be drilled in this deeper water frontier region are scheduled for 2010.

Abstract:
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are reported act as important regulators in various types of cancer. LncRNA JPX was identified as an oncogenic regulator in lung cancer. However, the function of JPX in the progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. In the present study, we found JPX was highly expressed in esophageal tissue from ESCC patients. Functional assays demonstrated that JPX promoted ESCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro, and accelerated tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, the results showed that JPX functioned as a sponge of miR-516b-5p, which targeted vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) in ESCC cells. Interactions between miR-516b-5p and JPX or VEGFA were confirmed by luciferase reporter assays. Inhibition of JPX significantly attenuated the cell growth and mobility ability of ESCC cells in vitro. In addition, overexpression of miR-516b-5p abrogated JPX-enhanced proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis of ESCC cells. Our study demonstrated that JPX played an important role in promoting ESCC progression via the miR-516b-5p/VEGFA pathway, which might serve as a promising novel diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for ESCC in clinic.

Abstract:
Abstract Emerging studies have shown that the aberrant expression and function of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in carcinogenesis and the development of various cancers. The long noncoding RNA JPX (lncRNA JPX) on the X chromosome is an activator of X-inactive-specific transcript (XIST) and is a molecular switch for X-chromosome inactivation. However, the exact mechanism by which JPX acts in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not well studied. Here, through integrating clinical data and a series of functional experiments, we found that lncRNA JPX expression is significantly upregulated in NSCLC tissues compared with that in paired adjacent normal tissues from two independent datasets and significantly associated with a poor survival and other malignant phenotypes (tumor stage, tumor volume) of NSCLC. Furthermore, we elucidated that JPX functions as an oncogene in NSCLC-promoting cell proliferation and cell migration by affecting cell-cycle progression. Mechanistically, JPX upregulates cyclin D2 (CCND2) expression in a competing endogenous RNA mechanism by interacting with miR-145-5p, thus provoking the development and progression of NSCLC. These findings reveal the mechanism of X-chromosome lncRNA JPX and its core regulatory circuitry JPX/miR-145-5p/CCND2 in the development and progression of NSCLC, which bring us closer to an understanding of the molecular drivers of NSCLC.

Abstract:
When tracking closely maneuvering targets, the critical role is played by both the chosen method of data association and the target-tracking algorithm. Without an effective association, state estimation is at risk. Without an efficient state prediction, the performance of an associator can be degraded. In developing an assignment strategy the crucial issue is whether to assign a track or observation as belonging uniquely to another observation or track, or to allow a track to be associated non-uniquely with multiple candidate observations.
This thesis presents a comparative study of two assignment alternatives, namely the NC (unique association of a measurement to an existing track) and JPDA (nonunique association of a measurement to an existing track) algorithms. These assignment strategies were combined with an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) positional estimator, which superiority over the other single scan algorithms has been largely documented. The respective tracking performance of the IMM-JVC and EV1M-JPDAF algorithms for multiple target tracking has been evaluated. After a detailed description of the IMM-JVC and IMM-JPDAF formalisms, and the IMM-JPDAF implementation issues, an analysis of the results of NC association compared to JPDA association is presented. Simulation results obtained on two scenarios involving two closely maneuvering aircraft confirm the superiority of the IMM-JVC.

Abstract:

The domain below the surface in maritime security is hard to monitor with conventional methods, due to the often very noisy environment. In conventional methods the measurements are thresholded in order to distinguish potential targets. This is not always a feasible way of treating measurements. In this thesis a system based on raw measurements, that are not thresholded, is presented in order to track and classify divers with an active sonar. With this system it is possible to detect and track weak targets, even with a signal to noise ratio that often goes below 0 dB.

The system in this thesis can be divided into three parts: the processing of measurements, the association of measurements to targets and the classification of targets. The processing of measurements is based on a particle filter using Track Before Detect (TBD). Two algorithms for association of measurements, Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) and Highest Probability Data Association (HPDA), have been implemented. The classification of targets is done using an assumed novel approach. The system is evaluated by doing simulations with approximately 8 hours of recorded data, where divers are present at nine different times. The simulations are done a number of times to catch The classification rate is high and the false alarm rate is low.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses model based tracking of radar echoes in tanks with liquid content. The errors in the measurements are not always random in these cases, and the interference that occurs when nearby echoes moves in relation to each other makes tracking difficult.

The tracking problem can be broken down to four parts; track initiation, track destruction, association of the measured echoes to the tracks and to update the tracks with the associated echoes.

The radar measurement is primarily made on the surface. However, additional echoes from the tank floor or other structures and double bounces are normally present. There are often linear relations between the positions of the measured echoes.

Kalman filters are typically used to estimate the positions of the echoes. Best performance is achieved if a model of the entire tank is used; however that model must be tailored to match the exact conditions in the tank. It is also possible to consider the echoes to be independent and track their positions using separate models.

Some of the possiblemethods to automatically build a model for a specific tank have been explored.

The general framework of this work concerns the driver assistance systems and more especially security. The objective here is to monitor the vehicle environment using a telemeter and inform the driver of potential hazardous situations. Maneuvers of collision avoidance or mitigation can then be considered. Two particular points have focused our attention : the object detection since it directly determines the overall performance of the method, and the association-tracking process which associates the available measurements to each tracked object. The telemetric data must be processed, through a detection stage that aggregates the measurement from the same object, in order to estimate the number of objects in the scene and their distance to the sensor. We propose in this thesis a method for object detection that uses not only the available measurements but also the geometric characteristics related to the applicative context. For the association stage, we particularly focus on the probabilistic data association methods that consider the available measure may not be linked to an object. These methods rely on the concept of detection and false alarm probabilities. These probabilities, and more particularly the probability of detection, are not only strongly linked to the detector, but also to the context of the scene (sensor/object and context object/object). To integrate the contextual information, we propose an association-tracking method based on the Bayesian networks. It allows an integration of the parameters related to the characteristics of the objects and the sensor in the determination of the detection probability

Abstract:
We solve a random matrix ensemble called the chiral Ginibre orthogonal ensemble, or chGinOE. This non-Hermitian ensemble has applications to modelling particular low-energy limits of two-colour quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD). In particular, the matrices model the Dirac operator for quarks in the presence of a gluon gauge field of fixed topology, with an arbitrary number of flavours of virtual quarks and a non-zero quark chemical potential. We derive the joint probability density function (JPDF) of eigenvalues for this ensemble for finite matrix size N, which we then write in a factorised form. We then present two different methods for determining the correlation functions, resulting in compact expressions involving Pfaffians containing the associated kernel. We determine the microscopic large-N limits at strong and weak non-Hermiticity (required for physical applications) for both the real and complex eigenvalue densities. Various other properties of the ensemble are also investigated, including the skew-orthogonal polynomials and the fraction of eigenvalues that are real. A number of the techniques that we develop have more general applicability within random matrix theory, some of which we also explore in this thesis.

Niedfeldt, Peter C. "Recursive-RANSAC: A Novel Algorithm for Tracking Multiple Targets in Clutter." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4195.

Abstract:
Multiple target tracking (MTT) is the process of identifying the number of targets present in a surveillance region and the state estimates, or track, of each target. MTT remains a challenging problem due to the NP-hard data association step, where unlabeled measurements are identified as either a measurement of an existing target, a new target, or a spurious measurement called clutter. Existing techniques suffer from at least one of the following drawbacks: divergence in clutter, underlying assumptions on the number of targets, high computational complexity, time-consuming implementation, poor performance at low detection rates, and/or poor track continuity. Our goal is to develop an efficient MTT algorithm that is simple yet effective and that maintains track continuity enabling persistent tracking of an unknown number of targets. A related field to tracking is regression analysis, where the parameters of static signals are estimated from a batch or a sequence of data. The random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm was developed to mitigate the effects of spurious measurements, and has since found wide application within the computer vision community due to its robustness and efficiency. The main concept of RANSAC is to form numerous simple hypotheses from a batch of data and identify the hypothesis with the most supporting measurements. Unfortunately, RANSAC is not designed to track multiple targets using sequential measurements. To this end, we have developed the recursive-RANSAC (R-RANSAC) algorithm, which tracks multiple signals in clutter without requiring prior knowledge of the number of existing signals. The basic premise of the R-RANSAC algorithm is to store a set of RANSAC hypotheses between time steps. New measurements are used to either update existing hypotheses or generate new hypotheses using RANSAC. Storing multiple hypotheses enables R-RANSAC to track multiple targets. Good tracks are identified when a sufficient number of measurements support a hypothesis track. The complexity of R-RANSAC is shown to be squared in the number of measurements and stored tracks, and under moderate assumptions R-RANSAC converges in mean to the true states. We apply R-RANSAC to a variety of simulation, camera, and radar tracking examples.

Abstract:
Abstract The crystal structure of relatively small molecules of up to 100 independent atoms are readily determined from the diffraction intensities by means of Direct-Methods (DM) techniques relying on the mathematical application of the joint probability distribution (jpd) of complex-valued structure factors (SFs). DM estimate phases from the intensities. When these phases are approximately correct the Fourier summation based upon measured magnitudes and estimated phases produces an image of the structure. However an increase in the size of the structure reduces the reliability of the phase estimates and consequently obstructs the structure determination via traditional DM(e.g. Woolfson, 1987).

Full text
Abstract:
This article deals with the multi-target tracking problem (MTT) in MIMO radar systems. As a result, this problem is now seen as a new technological challenge. Thus, in different tracking scenarios, measurements from sensors are usually subject to a complex data association issue. The MTT data association problem of assigning measurements-to-target or target-state-estimates becomes more complex in MIMO radar system, once the crossing target tracking scenario arises, hence the interference phenomenon may interrupt the received signal and miss the state estimation process. To avoid most of these problems, we have improved a new hybrid algorithm based on particle filter called “Monte Carlo” associated to Joint Probabilistic data Association filter (JPDAF), the whole approach named MC-JPDAF algorithm has been proposed to replace the traditional method as is known by the Extended KALMAN filter (EKF) combined with JPDAF method, such as EKF-JPDAF algorithm. The obtained experimental results showed a challenging remediation. Where, the MC-JPDAF converges towards the accurate state estimation. Thus, more efficient than EKF-JPDAF. The simulation results prove that the designed system meets the objectives set for MC-JPDA by referring to an experimental database using the MATLAB Software Development Framework.

Abstract:
Abstract Iris Young’s Justice and the Politics of Difference (1990a; hereafter JPD) quickly became one of the most frequently cited sources in feminist philosophy on the nature of oppression. In this book, Young rejects what she calls a distributive paradigm of justice. She presents an alternative to approaches inffuenced by John Rawls’s idea of justice as fairness in distributing benefits and burdens of social cooperation. Rawlsian approaches tend to begin from and become fixated on economic and political conffict resolution under ideal conditions. Young does not take justice’s primary concern to be adjudicating confficts of interest regarding the distribution of such goods as income and wealth. On her view, the primary concern is to work toward a society that would be free of oppression and domination. This approach centers on human development and power relationships, not on external benefits and burdens. And it begins from a set of very nonideal conditions. We might call it an agency or human development paradigm.

Abstract:
Target tracking scenarios offer an interesting challenge for state and parameter estimation techniques. This paper studies a situation with multiple targets in the presence of clutter. In this paper, the relatively new smooth variable structure filter (SVSF) is combined with the joint probability data association (JPDA) technique. This new method, referred to as the JPDA-SVSF, is applied on a simple multi-target tracking problem for a proof of concept. The results are compared with the popular Kalman filter (KF).

Abstract:
The development of low emission aero engine combustors strongly depends on the availability of accurate and efficient numerical models. The prediction of the interaction between two-phase flow and chemical combustion is one of the major objectives of the simulation of combustor flows. In this paper, predictions of a swirl stabilized model combustor are compared to experimental data. The computational method is based on an Eulerian two-phase model in conjunction with an Eddy Dissipation (ED) and a presumed-shape-PDF (JPDF) combustion model. The combination of an Eulerian two-phase model with a JPDF combustion model is a novelty. It was found to give good agreement to the experimental data.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) decommissioning project, the procedure for clean-up activities was specially studied for harmonization with radioactive waste treatment policy in Japan; it consisted of several components such as survey of the facility operational history, radiological characterization of building surfaces, decontamination and final survey of radioactivities. After confirming that there was no significant radioactivity in the facilities in the final step of the procedure, buildings were demolished in consideration of treatment of wastes as non-radioactive materials. The JPDR decommissioning project was completed by March 1996 with no serious problems, which showed that the procedure was rational, and that the experiences are useful for planning of future decommissioning activities. The dismantling and clean-up activities were reviewed, and the experiences are excepted to contribute to establishing standard and regulatory systems on decommissioning nuclear facilities.
