Van, Wynen Susan Elaine. "A Journey of Missional Intent : Organizational Strategy in the Context of God’s Mission." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/78502.

Full text
Abstract:
This research addresses the following issue: Traditional strategic planning philosophies and methodologies were not created or developed to reflect or support organizational participation in missio Dei (God’s mission). The following questions provided the focus for the research— Can the concept of a journey: • provide a more biblically and missiologically-aligned, helpful, and effective basis for creating new ways of leading and participating in organizational thinking and planning in and among mission and church organizations?” • address organizations’ desires to flourish in and respond to the complex local and global environments of today and tomorrow? • be effective in multicultural and global contexts? The questions above were addressed through three key areas of research: Metaphor and strategy, multi-cultural impressions of journey, and journey and Scripture. A process of qualitative inquiry drew from literature review, survey and case studies. The literature review included contributions from theology, missiology, business, history, and literary classics. The research was also enriched by the wisdom, cultures, contexts, and experiences of survey and case study participants, organizational leaders from more than forty nations. The findings come together to make a unique contribution to the study of strategy as relates to organizations that seek to be a part of God’s mission. The research primarily, but not exclusively, addresses the needs of Christian organizations, including churches. The study of strategy metaphors and the journey concept could be of benefit to any organization’s leaders. The research is informed by the work and journey of the Wycliffe Global Alliance, but the application potential and implications of the research are broader and deeper than any one group or type of organizations. Exploring the concept of journey led to findings concerning the importance of metaphor, the near-universality of journey as a metaphor, and the many rich facets of this concept when voices from many nations are heard. The case studies and research associated with the literature review also provided insights into how the journey concept can be practically applied across cultures and in ever-changing, and often complex, global and local contexts.

Based in three freudian similes, our path intents to circumscribe the concept of memory with which psychoanalysis deals. This notion, according to Jacques Lacan, bears the incidence of the symbolic register since it's beginnings. In an articulation with what seems an excess, with what is not embodied by the significant, but that appears as the rest of this operation that inscribes it in the psychic apparatus, we try to foresee what puts itself as a paradoxical presence that returns and does not subject itself to the principle of pleasure. To have a notion of what is being articulated, we turn to the freudian concept of death instinct, Lacan's comments about das Ding and the incarnation of this rest, the object a.

Abstract:
John Stevens was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund to compose a concerto for its principal tubist, Gene Pokorny. The piece began with multiple conversations between composer and performer and from these meetings actualized the influences that shaped the work. The most important influences that the performer mentioned were his passions for American steam locomotives and the Three Stooges, both of which were used by Stevens in his rendering of the composition. This concerto was designed to be played on the famous CC York tuba that was played by the former principal tubist of the CSO, Arnold Jacobs, the same instrument used today. Insight into the history of the York tuba will be given as well as their influence on contemporary manufacturing and design. Focus is given to how Stevens writes the piece idiomatically to the CC tuba and potential performance problems when a performer uses tubas of a different key. Conversations with both gentlemen will display the non-musical influences on Journey and how this effects the composition. Stevens' compositional language is explored and discussed in respect to the challenges and idiosyncrasies within the work. Collegiate tuba professors provide explanation for works level of interest within their respective schools and experiences.

Abstract:
Background: Retailing through Virtual Reality (VR) is faced with a dilemma of potential customers using the VR to look for products online, but somehow do not make a purchase online and prefer to visit the physical stores instead. This phenomenon is referred as Transition Risk. Aim: To develop an understanding regarding the concepts and factors that influence the occurrence of transition risk by using UTAUT2 framework. Identify those concepts and thus be able to assist retailers in diminishing the transition risk gap. Methodology: Is a quantitative study that involves an experiment followed by a questionnaire as the research instrument. The data was analyzed through regression analysis by using SmartPLS 3.0 as the data analysis tool for SEM. An exploratory research design for the cross-sectional study of a small sample of 45 people experimented. Findings: Findings of the research suggest that transition risk has a direct relation with the UTAUT2 constructs: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, hedonic motivation, and habit of the consumer. Moreover, absence of familiarity with VR retailing, social influence and consumer’s habit of web-rooming and retail therapy are significant contributors towards transition risk. Furthermore, UTAUT2 framework can also be used to identify reason for no usage and/or abandoning of use technology.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how second graders use writing and language when they are learning to add multidigit numbers in mathematics class. Second grade students were taught addition conceptually with a focus on sharing their strategies and thought processes with each other during the mathematics lesson. Two social norms were established with students so that sharing information and asking for clarity when they did not understand would be natural and expected. Students kept a daily mathematics journal to answer the class's Problems of the Day. Patterns found in student journals indicated three stages of multidigit learning. In Stage One, students used little or no words to explain their solution, illustrations show students using counting by ones strategies. Stage Two represents students using appropriate mathematics strategies and vocabulary to explain their solutions in detail. Lastly, Stage Three consists of students solving multidigit problems with little or no word explaining their solution process and illustrations are few. Results of the study indicated that students' oral explanations of solutions to addition problems included more detail compared to students' written justification of similar problems.

Lee, Seong-Ryeol, Florian Schoemacker, Christian Stammen, and Katharina Schmitz. "Numerical and experimental study on novel hydraulic pump concept." Technische Universität Dresden, 2020. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A71110.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses an investigation on a novel hydraulic pump concept. The idea aims on a pump principle to be directly connected to high-speed electric motors to build compact high-pressure drives. The pump can theoretically work without solid contact and has no kinematic pulsation. The composition of the pump is basically similar to cylindrical journal bearings. In general, a journal bearing is used to support external loads on a rotating shaft. When the shaft rotates with the loads, hydrodynamic fluid force is generated in the fluid film, which compensates the external force and reduces an eccentricity of the shaft. The difference of the introduced pump concept from the bearing is that the eccentricity is fixed and it has an outlet port at the high pressure area, through which the fluid can be transferred. To examine the functionality of the pump, a test bench is constructed and experiments are performed to investigate the pressure build-up and discharging flow of the pump concept. The experimental results are numerically analyzed by using elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) simulation, based on the 2D Reynold’s equation. From these results, the functionality of the pump concept is confirmed. Moreover, several variables that influence the characteristic curve of the pump are studied. Based on these results, geometric parameters of the test pump are redesigned to discharge sufficient flow rate for usage as commercial pumps.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of a socio-historical study and its object is School Failure. As a theoretical-methodological contribution from Reinhart Koselleck, approaching the conceptual history, and Pierre Bourdieu, mainly from the understanding of "excluded from the interior" and as reflections on the State. The main objective was conceived as the meaning of School Failure, as a concept, from a newspaper of wide circulation, in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. It was decided to carry out a survey assuming a digitized version of the Folha de S. Paulo as source. The research considers the methodological peculiarities of the digital history source and indication of an operation with digital documents as a fruitful option in the contemporary historiography. The period was established based on the choice of the source and on the previous survey where the period of greatest recurrence was noticed in the speeches about School Failure. The study takes into consideration the polysemy of the concept, from the History of Concepts, the empirical corpus of the research with the compound by the researchers: School Failure, School Success, School Reprobation and School Repetition, with 207 articles being located in the highlighted period. In the analysis of the articles it was important to locate the narratives in terms of composition of the newspaper, to identify the authors and the individuals involved in this discussion, as well as causes of School Failure announced in the narratives. The study contributes to understand about the conditions of choice of the concept, School Failure in Brazilian history. In addition, it points to a certain growth of the projection of the concept in Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, through the growing number of articles located in the last decades, as well as in the expansion of the physical space assigned to it in the newspaper. Regarding those present in the analyzed discourses, let us observe a centrality of the voices of experts and the State. An investigation indicated, synchronized in the causes next to a polysemy of the concept, locating three focus areas: extra-school, subjects and in-school.

This study aims to explain and categorize the concepts of Educational Administration, Management and Democratic Management within the Educational system presented on the Revista Brasileira de Política e Administração da Educação (RBPAE) between 1995 and 2004. Published since 1983 by the Associação Nacional de Política e Administração da Educação (ANPAE) this journal witnessed many historical moments in our society, from which two particular periods stand out: the Administrative State Reform (in the 1990s) and the reestablishment of the democracy (in the 1980s). During these two particular moments the discussion on public management received greater attention. Our study was based on the analysis of the conceptions on Educational Administration, Management and Democratic Management defended by the authors of the articles published on the magazine. This methodology enabled us to understand and categorize these conceivings. The RBPAE was used mainly by post grad researchers acting on the educational field as a means of knowledge source on educational administration, management and democratic management. The presence of these concepts on the Magazine happened because of two reasons: the number of articles and the ideas in each concept. The education management was the most studied subject during the 1980s and mid-1990s. In the late 1990s and early 2000s this trend was reversed and then the articles on educational administration outnumbered the ladder. It was analyzed under two different concepts: administration and democratic management. The ladder was less present on the studied articles. The most analyzed concept was the democratic management, which shows the preference of the Journal for these studies. In some of them the different ideas in each concept brought about some confusion. The educational management was presented as an activity related to the coordination of actions by means of organization, development and evaluation of the process collectively and hierarchically. The democratic management was presented by its political aspect and its main characteristics: the decentralization of power, collective decision-making, communication and technical improvements. Management was presented by the limitation of state management systems and self-regulation with the emphasis on evaluation and outcomes

Michael (1982, 1988, 1993, 2000) defines establishing operation as a change in the environment that alters the effectiveness of some object or event as reinforcer and, simultaneously, alters the momentary frequency of the response which have been followed by that reinforcer. According to Michael (1982), the formulation of this new scientific term has more value than mere terminological convenience; the absence of an appropriate term such as establishing operations may have lead to the disregard of the effects mentioned above or to their labeling under other headings. Furthermore, the author suggests that our verbal behavior may be improved if it would be possible to identify in the same term all environmental operations which alter the effectiveness of events as reinforcers and point to the evocative effects of such operations. The present study s objective was to analyze the effects of a change in the form of a verbal response the elaboration of a new term or expression, in this case, establishing operations - in the analytical behavior of analysts behavior. To do this, 31 articles of B. A. Iwata, published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (JABA) between 1990 and 2005 were considered. Results showed a) non- systematic use of the term, b) different analysis when establishing operations were considered, and c) use of the term to refer only to unconditioned establishing operations

“Journey to the West” was a fictional novel regarding Chinese mythology, written by Wu Cheng’en, who had been struggled and underappreciated throughout his entire life. To explore further onto “Journey to the West”, large proportion of the context could be found expressing the writer's concern about the fate of his nation as well as certain satire toward the world he had lived. This thesis wishes to delve into its value and moral through the monk--Xuanzang and his four disciples' adventure on their journey to the West, by analysing how they manage to make breakthrough out of difficulties and reach their goal. There is ranking systems for the gods in Daoism. The rank varies by different levels of spiritual practice hence the constant shifting on the ranks and positions. The folklore of gods being delegated was derived from the beliefs of heaven and gods' existence and their ranking system which was the concept of delegation that the Daoism based on. However, being relegated to the mortal world as punishment involves the perspective of Daoism towards the mortal life. In Daoism, it has the inclination of believing the mortal world being chaotic. The pureness of heaven in contrast to the grime on earth. This concept also expressed the pessimism towards the government, and connected to the Buddhism that was popular at the time. After Buddhism was introduced to China, it has since enriched the religious beliefs of its people. Certain concepts such as Buddha, Boddhisattva, Samsara, and Inferno, has been picked up by Daoists and became localized. Under such circumstances, the fantasies and world view “Journey to the West” has presented is a formation of Daoism, Buddhism, and folk religions. The gods who were relegated or downgraded for crimes or sins must go through countless tests to fulfill the task in order to atone. Being exiled to the mortal world is one of the spiritual practice in order to redeem themselves and then be able to go back to heaven. Therefore this thesis would hold the intention to study the path of the delegation process in the novel alongside the religion, and to furthermore discuss about the religious ideas between Daoism and Buddhism.

I believe that the election in 1994 of the first democratic government in South Africa has presented a challenge to all South Africans in different ways. I believe that one of the principal challenges that the 1994 elections presented to my conservative Calvinistic Afrikaner community was to address its personal, family, community, national and international identity/ies. Arising out of this perspective and perception, I have explored my and my family memory/ies to answer questions about my identity. My study is a journey of awareness: a self-study exploring my identity through critical self-reflection and the development of my art practice. My self-study is multi- disciplinary: it employs interchangeable methodologies allowing for various forms of knowledge generation. My journey of awareness is a “living theory” in which I have developed my “living standards of judgement” and addressed my “living contradictions” (Whitehead 1985; 1989; 2008a; b; c; d). My study illustrates the symbiotic research and creative process of developing an understanding of my identity as a white Afrikaans woman through practicing my art. My art practice assisted in the action/reflection process as well acting as a tool for social action and transformation.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Archit.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2007.
Indian architecture has its unique place in the architectural history of the world. It constantly inspires its people. It continues to fascinate many a tourist and thinker. It has a multi-layered, 4000 year old history with the Indus valley civilisation (approx. 2500 BeE) boasting of highly sophisticated space planning concepts. The progressive evolvement of Indian culture since then has seen further refinement of all its art-forms. The remnants of the built forms of such bygone eras hold immense architectural merit that makes a walk through any traditional town a meaningful memory, even today. If architecture is the reflection of culture, what should have been the richness of the culture that gave rise to such splendour in architecture! Yet, "In order to understand a culture, it is not enough to describe its buildings, but one wants to know the impulses that drove people to build them." (Ballantyne, 2004, 30). So then what were these impulses that drove the Indian people to create the stupendous architecture, the representations of which are marvelled at today? The main proposition of the dissertation is that the ancient Hindu concept of "Art as Experience" on which much of the conscious place-making by the Hindu people was based, evolved from profound metaphysical seeds that addressed the very basis of man's existence on earth. The research hopes to partially prove that the greatness of traditional Hindu architecture lies in its metaphysical moorings of Ultimate Reality and Ultimate Truth and in doing so understanding what Ultimate reality was in Indian philosophy and what bearing it had on Hindu architecture and addresses the questions of how traditional Indian Hindu architecture housed man: body, being and all within his unique context? How does Hindu architecture with its unique perception of man and his environment converse with universal perennials? What is the currect architectural scene in India? And what are the lessons that such a comparative study might teach one? The research tries to answer the above questions by looking in depth at the ancient Hindu architectural concept of "Art as Experience" that is believed to have given rise to the ancient Hindu architecture of India. Starting with examining Indian metaphysical constructs and within it the perception of known and unknown entities of reality; further exploring its relevance to architecture in terms of the role of body in architecture, the concept of micro and macrocosms, contextual appropriateness and the unique place that thresholds held in life, the research moves on to the role of an architect and the way in which the architecture created lent meaning to the everyday life of people, attempting to understand how ancient architecture was weaved into the lives of people and their beliefs. Further, some parallels with non-Indian architectural thought are discussed following which the need for a sensate environment for human beings to live in, the need for identity and meaning in architecture, the concept of place and culture as a generating force for architecture are also explored. Finally the current state of architecture in India is discussed. In the end, some lessons that could be learnt from history are enumerated that could help in creating architecture that integrates both the universal principles and the particularities of culture to bestow meaning and identity to the people it purports to serve. This research tries to examine the past to look for clues to a future of identifiable and authentic architecture - to bring the ancient and contemporary into the same framework in order to look for lessons within. Nonviolent Communication (or NVC) is a model of communication developed in the 1960s by Marshall B. Rosenberg. With the purpose of supporting human beings to create peace by thinking and speaking compassionately, NVC centers on four components—observations, feelings, needs, and requests—in a two-part process of honestly expressing oneself and empathically listening to others. The model was officially introduced to the public in China and Taiwan in 2009 through the publication of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, written by Rosenberg, and the model has continued to develop in Chinese culture through workshops and translations of other books. The present study aims to engage NVC as the subject of study from perspectives in translation in order to enrich the interdisciplinary field of translation studies, which currently has undertaken only limited exploration in the translation of self-help literature. Moreover, this study aims to complement the research on NVC with fresh perspectives from translation and glimpses of the development of the model in Taiwan and China. Translation in this study is a broad notion that encompasses the inter-contextual borrowing of NVC concepts from different sources as well as the inter-lingual and intercultural translation of these concepts into Chinese. This study aims to examine the borrowing of NVC concepts and explore the transfer of their historical, theoretical, and/or cultural meanings to the model. Specifically, this study traces the borrowing of the concept of nonviolence from Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., the concepts of feelings, needs, and empathy from psychology and Zhuangzi’s philosophy, and the concepts of vulnerability, mourning, and appreciation from everyday language. Furthermore, as these concepts were adapted to acquire new and specific definitions in NVC, this study explores how these concepts are further transformed when they were translated into Chinese. The methodology of this study includes the tracing of the concepts’ sources, investigation of their borrowing and adaptation to NVC, and examination of their Chinese translation and introduction to China and Taiwan. The materials examined for this study include textual materials such as books, articles, and translated NVC literature as well as non-textual materials such as workshops and interviews with practitioners, promoters, and translators of NVC in Chinese culture. This study has found that in the borrowing of concepts from various sources, adaptations were always present in order to incorporate the borrowed concepts within NVC principles and applications. This study has also found that in translating and introducing these concepts to the Chinese target audience, further shifts occurred that reflect the translators’ interpretation of the concepts and their values regarding the introduction of NVC into Chinese culture.

Abstract:
Airships and Angels is a faux Victorian travel journal created through collaboration with Kristina Krumholt and Rudy Ramirez. Ultimately, the goal of the thesis project is to disrupt traditional hierarchical creative processes by challenging the order in which artifacts are crafted during the creation of a narrative structure and, ultimately, a performance. The end product is a leather book that is shared in the manner of rare books (by appointment and in a controlled environment) for a week, and two special two-night readings with projected imagery at the end of the week. In this process I first created concept art and the text was created afterwards by Krumholt. Once the text was complete the two artifacts were brought together and developed further. Eventually all the images were drawn and the book was printed, bound, and performed.

The theme of the works is “love for the island.” Creation is an act to discover the soul. The works fully reflect feelings of the soul. Creation is to present how the heart responds to the external world through the process of knowing, observing and mirroring life. I. Motives for creation a. Motive behind the theme: I choose the theme to work on because of my attachment to the motherland, desire to seek a home for the soul and intention to explore the self. b. Motive of selecting the painting materials: I personally prefer using vandal canvas and oil painting, as I love to create lines and texture with oil colors. II. Concepts of creation a. Thoughts: I focus on the revelation of the spiritual side. I intend to exhibit my subjective observation of the human nature and try to get rid of all bondages imposed by shapes and the nature. The spiritual experience contains love for humans. b. Structures in the paintings: “Deconstruction” plays an important role in my works. I deconstruct the original scenes and turn them into elements of paintings so they become new vocabulary. I reconstruct the scenes to express my inner longings for a new order. III. Theoretical foundation Abstract art, Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism form my main theoretical foundation. My employment of colors is based on color psychology. IV. Concepts and forms of the paintings The concepts of the works focus on Taiwan, covering both natural and social scenes. They are as follows: Cities in fading memory﹘two horizontal pieces in no. 50: the mountain city and Chiufen The hometown of black tuna﹘two vertical pieces in no. 50: Donggang and boats Adam and Eve﹘a vertical piece in no. 50 Life as an opera﹘a vertical piece in no. 50 Amorgos﹘two horizontal pieces in no. 80 V. Techniques I create scenes out of objects and fuse my feelings with the scenes. Through incidental and feeling-oriented techniques, I select or create images that echo my soul. My works tend to be abstract and horizontally structured. The accounts of the paintings are as follows: Cities in fading memory﹘color blocks as rhythms, lines as melody and visible signs transformed into mental images The hometown of black tuna﹘lines mixed with surfaces, rhythm and the sense of beauty, overlapping and piercing Adam and Eve﹘abstract expression, color zones, symbols and signs Life as an opera﹘a combination and rebirth of Eastern and Western thoughts, deconstructed and reconstructed images, different shots of life Amorgos﹘spontaneity and chance characterize the style of the painting; metaphor, metamorphosis and simplified images Future development A modern artist has to be all dimensional; therefore, the artist needs to possess all kinds of artistic abilities. I will look at the world and be engaged in life. Painting is an approach of “self understanding” and “a way of life.” I will carefully observe the world and create my own style. I hope I may use more ingredients to enrich the contents and forms of my paintings.

The master thesis "The concept of the site of the Russian scientific journal" consists of three chapters – theoretical, analytical and practical, conclusion and bibliography, which includes 88 titles. The purpose of the study is to develop a universal concept for a scientific journal site. Object: sites of Russian scientific journals. Subject: site parameters of Russian scientific journals. In the first chapter of the thesis, the concept of a site as a publishing product is studied and its specificity is reflected. The site is presented as a complex of information consisting of a concept, a well-developed understanding of the target audience, a semantic core, structure, design and content. During the study, the main features of publications and websites were compared to determine the working area of publishing specialists, and the key differences between these information products were identified. The second chapter presents an editorial analysis of the sites of Russian scientific journals, as a result of which the status of 50 sites of scientific journals was determined, their effectiveness was evaluated and the characteristics of appearance, structure and usability were given. As a result, the advantages and disadvantages of scientific journal sites were discovered, which was taken into account when developing a universal concept. The third chapter proposes a universal concept of a scientific journal site, which can be used for developing a specific project of a journal site, taking into account the development of aspects specified in the concept that depend solely on the thematic direction of the future media, preferences and capabilities of its developers and founders.

A procedure is during recent decades, the explosive development of the information technology has brought a remarkable advance in search engine and it has also changed our daily life. Nowadays, most information retrieval (IR) systems can only help us search information with simple interface, but the IR system that can help integrate web browsing and searching functions is very rare. Fortunately, Concept Lattice can help address the shortage and provide the browse of web tree structure. This paper uses Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to construct Chinese Information Retrieval, and provides a browsing and searching system in Chinese data. This system can display multi-browsing modes for Concept Lattice, and we use both bottom-up (from the Infimum to the Supremum) and top-down (from the Supremum to the Infimum) searching way to help users find information efficiently and correctly. We also use tree structure and similarity order to present our result. To evaluate the searching quality and performance, this paper uses the data form Journal of Information Management as our data set.

This diploma thesis interprets the anonymous Inventory of Chamber Compositions, which is held in the Archives and Library of Prague Conservatory. It informs about the conditions of performing the repertory from this source between 1843 and 1864. In comparison with other sources the author of this manuscript was identified. His biography is contained in the second chapter. The content of the manuscript is analyzed and compared with the repertory performed in other bourgeios houses and Prague public concerts. Apart from the relevant literature the period critical concert reviews and further archive sources are taken into consideration. The discovered Inventory of the compositions performed in JUDr. František Švestka's house is one of the few sources which prove reception of similarly demanding repertory among non-professional instrumentalists in the 19th century.
