Abstract:
This article examines the role of authorial subjectivity in the work of Azilkhan Nurshaykov, a writer-journalist who contributed significantly to Kazakhstani literature and journalism. The scientific aspect of A. Nurshaykov's journalistic activity, which had a large impact on public opinion and played an essential role in the development of humanistic concepts, is discussed. The study's goal is to describe the author's concept in journalistic works based on personal experience, perspectives, feelings, analysis and evaluation. The primary focus of the research is the author's publicistic works, which contain the author's thoughts and opinions. The author's perspectives and approaches to public and societal issues are taken into account in the journalist's profession. The author's notion will be acknowledged in philosophical, social, cultural, personal, and other aspects depending on the work's subject and genre. The study examines theoretical and empirical methodologies, as well as contextually analyzing essential characteristics of authorship that contribute to the integrity and uniqueness of a journalist's work and determine individual style. This helps readers comprehend the concept of authorship in a journalist's work. The paper investigates the journalistic laboratory he worked in for nearly two decades and analyzes his perspectives on the concept of journalist. A writer-journalist's viewpoint based on life experience is critical for developing journalists' professionalism and competency. The study's relevance and innovation stem from the development of contextual analyses that connect the author's subjectivity in journalism with the stylistic-genre, creative, and poetic characteristics of A. Nurshaykov's works. The article's value is additionally boosted by providing theoretical explanations of features of authorial subjectivity of international and domestic journalists, including the role of journalistic texts in content production and their influence on reader perception.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article investigates the concept of autonomy within the journalistic institution. A review of the literature reveals that journalist autonomy is restricted at the political, economic and organisational levels of news production, negotiated at the editorial level, and exercised at the level of practice. The article addresses the limits of professional autonomy, aiming for a wider contextualisation of the question to analyse the factors that restrict and enable journalistic autonomy. By investigating journalistic autonomy within the duality of structure, the analysis finds that autonomy is attained when journalists engage in the recursive reproduction of the institution. The level of autonomy enjoyed by journalists therefore remains a fluid concept that is continually adjusted to manage the daily task of reporting the news.

Abstract:
Legal protection for confidential journalist sources has often been a site of tension and dispute between journalists, the police and the courts. Journalists routinely claim that freedom of expression guarantees provided for under international and domestic human rights instruments include a legal privilege against disclosure of confidential journalist sources. This claim is often raised to resist compelled disclosure of journalistic materials to police as part of criminal investigations. Courts in many jurisdictions have forcefully repudiated this legal claim, though many recognise some right for journalists to refuse disclosure. Some courts have reluctantly conceded to the naming of this right as ‘journalistic privilege’. In 2020, courts on both sides of the Irish border were called upon to vindicate this right against disclosure. This recent flurry of litigation has, in the Republic of Ireland, built upon more than a decade of significant legal developments around ‘journalistic privilege’. These latter developments have dramatically expanded the scope of the Irish Constitution’s freedom of expression guarantees. This article critically reviews this last decade of significant legal developments around ‘journalistic privilege’ in the Republic of Ireland. It examines the two recent and highly significant Irish determinations from 2020 in Fine Point Films and Corcoran, and how the former Northern Irish judgment has created significant new avenues for legal development in the Republic of Ireland. The article also identifies and considers some important, emergent themes in Strasbourg’s article 10 jurisprudence: specifically an apparent new ‘source motive’ test for article 10 protection of confidential source material.

Abstract:
The article examines the idiostyle features of the journalist M. F. Isangazin, the editor-in-chief of the regional Omsk print media — the newspaper “Commercial News”, moreover, the idiostyle of the journalist is analysed through the prism of the basic genre in which M. F. Isangazin works, — journalistic investigation. The article states that the journalistic investigations of the studied author can be classified as economic, since the focus of the journalist’s attention is economic problems and crimes committed in the Omsk region. The purpose of this study was to identify thematic, substantive, structural and pragmatic specificity of the journalistic investigation of M. F. Isangazin. Analysis, systematization and generalization of the empirical material (more than 180 articles in the studied genre) made it possible to draw conclusions about the idiostyle features of M. F. Isangazin and about the specifics of the implementation of the genre of “journalistic investigation” in a high-quality regional publication.

Abstract:
Journalistic secrecy is the cornerstone of the journalistic profession and the foundation of media freedom. In the Polish legal system, the source of journalistic secrecy is Art. 15 of the Press Law. However, this right of the journalists – apart from data protecting informants – is not absolute. Exemption is provided for in Art. 180 § 2 of the Criminal Procedure Code, as well as in Art. 261 § 2 of the Civil Procedure Code and Art. 83 § 2 of the Administrative Procedure Code. Exemption from journalistic secrecy in a criminal trial can only be granted by a court, and only if it is necessary in the interests of justice and there is no other evidence that could be used to replace the journalist’s testimony. Abstract:
Do journalism subjects invariably feel betrayed and misrepresented by journalists, as Janet Malcolm claims in her seminal 1990 book The Journalist and the Murderer? If not, what explains the ongoing appeal of her now famous conclusion? Based on interviews with 83 people who were named in newspapers in the New York City–area and a southwestern city, this article takes up these questions by putting journalism subjects’ own descriptions of their experiences with the journalistic process in dialogue with Malcolm’s central argument. I conclude that Malcolm’s conman–victim model for the journalist–subject relationship fails, in some key ways, to describe journalism subjects’ experiences; and yet, Malcolm does capture important emotional truths at the heart of the journalist–subject encounter. In the end, the hyperbolic versions of the journalist and subject she portrays may continue to resonate not because they are strictly accurate, but because they play a role in journalistic boundary work, simultaneously probing and reinforcing the boundaries of acceptable journalistic practice.

Abstract:
The irruption of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated technology has substantially changed the journalistic profession, transforming the way of capturing, processing, generating, and distributing information; empowering the work of journalists by modifying the routines and knowledge required by information professionals. This study, which conceptualizes the “exo journalism” on the basis of the impact of AI on the journalism industry, is part of a research project of the Observatory for Information Innovation in the Digital Society (OI2). The results, derived from documentary research supported by case studies and in-depth interviews, propose that AI is a source of innovation and personalization of journalistic content and that it can contribute to the improvement of professional practice, allowing the emergence of a kind of "exo journalist", a conceptual proposal that connects the possibilities of AI with the needs of journalism’s own productive routines. The end result is the enhancement of the journalist’s skills and the improvement of the news product. The research focuses on conceptualizing a kind of support and complement for journalists in the performance of their tasks based on the possibilities of AI in the automatic generation of content and data verification.

Abstract:
The bachelor thesis ‘The journalistic aim in Ghana” is a study of what aims Ghanaian journalists have with their work. Furthermore it explores if the professional identity of journalists differ depending on if they work for state or privately owned newspapers. The bachelor thesis also looks at how Ghanaian journalists use ethics in their work and how media laws have affected journalism in Ghana. In total 20 interviews have been made of which 10 are presented. The result of the bachelor thesis shows that the journalists interviewed all expressed an urge to help develop the country of Ghana and to speak for the people who are marginalized in the country. This study shows that the aims of the journalists are the same, no matter whom they work for and that the workplace is chosen for other reasons such as job security. The journalist say media laws did not affect them, but they were careful in their reporting. The study also reveals that the state media sometimes becomes the mouthpiece of the government and that journalists working for privately owned newspapers have greater liberties to choose what to write about.

Akinfemisoye, Motilola Olufenwa. "Negotiating inclusion : new 'alternative' media and the institutional journalistic practices of print journalists in Nigeria." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2015. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/16627/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study uses an ethnographic approach (in-depth interviews and newsrooms observations) combined with Critical Discourse Analysis to closely interrogate how journalists in four Nigerian print newsrooms; The Punch, Vanguard, Nigerian Tribune and Guardian, appropriate ‘alternative media’ content and new media technologies in their newsmaking practices. The choice of these four newsrooms enables a detailed reading of how the process of appropriating new media technologies and alternative media content takes place in Nigerian print newsrooms. The study explores how and whether (or not) these appropriations are impacting on institutional practices of Nigerian print journalists. It also sheds light on the spaces which new media technologies negotiate in these newsrooms and how these journalists negotiate the appropriation of alternative media content. Beyond the everyday newsmaking practices, the study uses the reporting of two key events; the Nigerian elections of 2011 and the Occupy Nigeria protests of 2012 to show how journalists in Nigerian print newsrooms negotiate their appropriation of alternative media content and new media technologies in reporting key events. Together, these examples highlight the creative appropriation of new media technologies in Nigerian print newsrooms and the need to avoid technological determinist perspectives which totalise experiences elsewhere as being universal. The study therefore reinvigorates the continued relevance of newsroom ethnography and argues that a sociological approach, which importantly considers local context imperatives, remains useful in understanding how Nigerian print journalists appropriate new media technologies and the resulting alternative journalisms. The findings of the study provide useful insights into the journalistic cultures in Nigerian print newsrooms and highlights how these journalists negotiate their appropriation of alternative media content. While the (disruptive) impact of new media technologies on newsmaking practices in these newsrooms cannot be ignored, the study finds that a number of local context factors constrain and shape how appropriations take place in these newsrooms. Thus, Nigerian print journalists appropriate alternative media and new media technologies to suit traditional journalistic practices. The study’s contribution to knowledge therefore lies in acknowledging that, beyond binary assumptions about the impact of new media technologies on journalism practices in Africa, particularly Nigeria, there is the need to consider the creative and complex ways in which journalists in these contexts appropriate these technologies. This study should thus be read as a step towards that end.

Xu, Di. "Journalistic culture in contemporary China : media control, journalistic corruption, and the impact of social media." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2014. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5354/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last three decades, Chinese society has experienced dramatic social change. China is now turning into a global superpower, both economically and militarily but not necessarily politically. Western media often embarrass Chinese political leaders for their suppression on free speech and deviation from political democracy. This is the wider social context in which this thesis locates its enquiries. The Chinese media are deeply involved in this social transition. This thesis intends to provide an up-to-date investigation into journalistic culture in contemporary China, where journalism undergoes political suppression, commercial imperatives, and technological upgrades. This thesis examines the key tenets of practising journalism. It focuses on three areas: (1) the norms of practising journalism under political suppression, (2) the main forms of and roots of journalistic corruption that have brought forth by media commercialisation, and (3) the changes and continuities in journalistic practices associated with social media. This research is mainly based on six individual interviews and six focus group interviews, carried out between January 2012 and February 2012 in Beijing and Shanghai. The research is also supported by materials gained through personal communication in these cities. The research concludes that self-censorship and journalistic corruption are two prominent features of contemporary Chinese journalism. Social media have brought both changes and continuities to journalistic practices and media control methods. In analysing the factors shaping contemporary journalism, journalists tend to highlight the impact of traditional Chinese culture. This research, however, suggests that culture does not always play a determinative role. Political, economic and cultural factors, alongside other elements, all contribute to shaping journalism. We need a more dynamic and comprehensive perspective in examining journalism, which should be spatial-temporally constructed.

Abstract:
Essay is the main genre of artistic journalism, which expresses real events and facts with the help of imagery. As a genre, essays have been and continue to be studied by a large number of scholars, at least because it belongs to both journalism and fiction. Speaking of journalism, it is almost impossible to find well-written essays in modern publications. For the study, we chose a kind of genre, such as travel. The choice of this genre is due to its uniqueness, where the journalist must step out of the comfort zone, travel and describe the real picture in the world, thus helping recipients through the prism of their own perception to learn about any area, see and feel everything the author experienced even without being there.

Journalists&rsquo
commitment to an objective, impartial, balanced way of reporting and their respect for ethical norms are considered a vital prerequisite for democracy to be carried out. The general purpose of this thesis is to reveal whether established journalistic practices in Turkey are shaped through commonly acknowledged professional principles in a way that is compatible with democratic expectancies. In order to achieve this goal, a group of journalists were interviewed in the summer of 2003 who worked as parliament journalists at some time in their careers. They were asked several questions mainly concerning the factors that might have influence on the processes of news making with a special emphasis on the negative consequences of the complex structure of media-politics relationships. The analysis of the interviews reveals Turkish journalists&rsquo
views that journalism in Turkey is faced with serious problems and even may be characterized by a high degree of &ldquo

Heinrich, Ansgard, and n/a. "Network journalism : journalistic practice in interactive spheres." University of Otago. Department of Media, Film and Communication Studies, 2008. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20081211.162922.

Full text
Abstract:
Todays globalized network communication initiates new interactive formats, transforming not only the dissemination, but - increasingly - the production of news. The one-way flow of news from a news outlet to the audience has been replaced by a network structure. Following Castells concept of the network (1996) as the central model of information structures, I perpetuate this paradigmatic shift and suggest that networks also transform the professional journalism sphere in many world regions. A revised sphere of journalism is taking shape in which an increasingly global flow of news is evolving and a multiple platform structure of journalism is taking shape in which boundaries between traditional media outlets of print, radio, and television and between national and foreign journalism are blurring. Furthermore, I argue that a globalized journalistic network sphere is emerging which involves traditional journalistic outlets and bloggers, media activists, so-called citizen journalists, or user-generated content providers alike. These new journalistic spheres of connectivity establish new (and continuous) links between journalists, their sources as well as their audiences. This fundamental change creates new professional levels of connectivity on one hand and on the other, has severe strategic and organizational implications for the management of print, broadcast and online news outlets. Within this new network sphere of journalistic practice, the roles of journalistic outlets change. This work suggests a framework that helps to understand journalistic organization today, with innovative work structures based on digital technologies transforming the character and in effect substituting the model of top-down journalism models by a model that is far more complicated. I argue that within an evolving global news sphere, information flows are multidirectional. Decentralization and non-linearity become the key parameters defining news flows at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The character of this network in the journalism sphere is transnational, crossmedia, and cross professions. Based on results of thirteen qualitative interviews with media practitioners in Germany, the US and the UK, I argue that a new geography of journalism is taking shape in which journalistic outlets are being transformed into nodes. These nodes are arranged in a dense net of information gathers, producers and disseminators and the interactive connections among them constitute what I want to call network journalism.

Abstract:
The nature of news reporting and data gathering has changed with the advent of social media, equipping journalists with new methods of uncovering news stories and providing the necessary background and context for their readers. Even though a presence online is indispensable for journalists, there are risks from these practices. Affordances of media technologies can influence a journalist´s decision to cover an event, select sources, or engage in conversations, but they also result in cues and residues that can reduce a journalist’s credibility. In this chapter, we use the four classes of technological affordances outlined by the MAIN model (Sundar 2008)—modality, agency, interactivity, and navigability—to examine the various actions and cues in social media that both aid and ensnare journalists. We discuss how interface cues trigger cognitive heuristics (or mental shortcuts) that lure journalists, sometimes to their detriment. We provide recent examples of journalistic misadventure and potential solutions.

The article is dedicated to theoretical understanding of the problem of development and protection of the rights of foreign and domestic journalists. The modern reality of journalistic activity, including the full scale russian aggression, was highlighted. Lubkovych, Igor. METHODS OF JOURNALISTIC COMMUNICATION. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11096.

Abstract:
Journalistic communication is professional, its purpose is to obtain information and share it withthe audience. A journalist communicates when he intends to receive information directly from the interlocutor, from documents that the interlocutor has, or by observing the behavior of the interlocutor during the conversation. The most common method is communication in order to obtain verbal information. In the course of communication, a journalist succeeds when he adheres to politeness, clarity, brevity. It is important that the conditions of communication must be prepared or created: a place of communication, participants of communication, demonstration of listening skills, feedback. You should always try to get documentary evidence of what you have heard. An active reaction to what is heard by the journalist should be used to find out how much the interlocutor understands what is being said. At the beginning of the conversation, when the interlocutor expresses his attitude to the event or problem in question, it should not be interrupted. A journalist, like most people, often makes two mistakes when communicating: perceives as truth what is presented and attributes characteristics. Attribution of the characteristic as a psychological error is known since the beginning of the last century. And the perception of everything as the truth has long been inherent in our society.

Yatsymirska, Mariya. KEY IMPRESSIONS OF 2020 IN JOURNALISTIC TEXTS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11107.

Abstract:
The article explores the key vocabulary of 2020 in the network space of Ukraine. Texts of journalistic, official-business style, analytical publications of well-known journalists on current topics are analyzed. Extralinguistic factors of new word formation, their adaptation to the sphere of special and socio-political vocabulary of the Ukrainian language are determined. Examples show modern impressions in the media, their stylistic use and impact on public opinion in a pandemic. New meanings of foreign expressions, media terminology, peculiarities of translation of neologisms from English into Ukrainian have been clarified. According to the materials of the online media, a «dictionary of the coronavirus era» is provided. The journalistic text functions in the media on the basis of logical judgments, credible arguments, impressive language. Its purpose is to show the socio-political problem, to sharpen its significance for society and to propose solutions through convincing considerations. Most researchers emphasize the influential role of journalistic style, which through the media shapes public opinion on issues of politics, economics, education, health care, war, the future of the country. To cover such a wide range of topics, socio-political vocabulary is used first of all – neutral and emotionally-evaluative, rhetorical questions and imperatives, special terminology, foreign words. There is an ongoing discussion in online publications about the use of the new foreign token «lockdown» instead of the word «quarantine», which has long been learned in the Ukrainian language. Research on this topic has shown that at the initial stage of the pandemic, the word «lockdown» prevailed in the colloquial language of politicians, media personalities and part of society did not quite understand its meaning. Lockdown, in its current interpretation, is a restrictive measure to protect people from a dangerous virus that has spread to many countries; isolation of the population («stay in place») in case of risk of spreading Covid-19. In English, US citizens are told what a lockdown is: «A lockdown is a restriction policy for people or communities to stay where they are, usually due to specific risks to themselves or to others if they can move and interact freely. The term «stay-at-home» or «shelter-in-place» is often used for lockdowns that affect an area, rather than specific locations». Content analysis of online texts leads to the conclusion that in 2020 a special vocabulary was actively functioning, with the appropriate definitions, which the media described as a «dictionary of coronavirus vocabulary». Media broadcasting is the deepest and pulsating source of creative texts with new meanings, phrases, expressiveness. The influential power of the word finds its unconditional embodiment in the media. Journalists, bloggers, experts, politicians, analyzing current events, produce concepts of a new reality. The world is changing and the language of the media is responding to these changes. It manifests itself most vividly and emotionally in the network sphere, in various genres and styles.

The article analyzes some theoretical and practical aspects of creativity. The author shares his opinion that the concept of creativity belongs to the fundamental concepts of philosophy, psychology, literature, art, pedagogy. Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form. The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.
