Abstract:

La dissolution de l’établissement de Walmart à Jonquière fut une suite immédiate de l’accréditation du syndicat des salariés du lieu. La problématique mit en opposition concrète ces deux libertés : la liberté de commerce de l’employeur et la liberté d’association des 190 salariés qui y travaillaient. Pourtant, l’article 59 du Code du travail impose à l’employeur, dont les salariés sont maintenant représentés par un syndicat accrédité, de maintenir le statu quo ante du moins jusqu’à l’acquisition du droit au lock-out ou à la grève (art 59, al 2 Ct)! À la suite de cette dissolution de l’établissement de Jonquière se posa cette double question en droit : parce que la Cour ne crut pas disposer du pouvoir d’annuler la dissolution de l’établissement de Jonquière ni d’ordonner, en conséquence, la reprise des activités en ce même lieu, elle se refusa à ordonner la réintégration au travail de ces 190 salariés, de plus, la Cour suprême reconnut que l’arbitre qui intervint au différend (art 93.1 Ct – première convention collective), puis qui fut désigné par les parties à titre d’arbitre de grief, dispose à ce dernier titre du pouvoir de réparation nécessaire. Ainsi, la Cour suprême du Canada s’en remit à cet arbitre de grief pour en traiter et en tirer les conclusions juridiques et pratiques qui pourraient s’imposer. Les deux juges dissidents considérèrent que l’article 59 Ct était inapplicable en cette affaire et qu’il aurait fallu d’abord établir si le démantèlement de l’établissement fut un acte antisyndical de la part de Walmart. Nous notons que l’on semble parfois, en cet arrêt, confondre les concepts d’« entreprise » et d’« établissement », du moins selon le libellé de certains énoncés. Une telle confusion des termes ne pourrait-elle pas être aussi porteuse d’éventuelles malheureuses interprétations ou extrapolations?

Abstract:

Daffodil (Narcissus L. spp.) is one of the oldest ornamental flowers that have been cultivated from ancient times to nowadays. The species Narcissus tazetta L. and N. serotinus L. have spread out in different regions of Turkey and some other species have been naturalized. The purpose of this study was to characterize some daffodil populations that were collected from different regions of Turkey by using SRAP markers. Twenty-two daffodil populations of different species such as N. tazetta, N. serotinus, N. pseudonarcissus L., N. poeticus L. and N. jonquilla L. were used. Thirty-seven of 48 SRAP primer combinations showed scorable and polymorphic bands between samples. The similarity coefficients were used to construct a dendrogram by Unweighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA) using NTSYS-PC. Cophenetic correlation between ultrametric similarities of tree and similarity matrix were high (r = 0.97). The genotypes of Narcissus species were divided into 2 main groups. Although there was less genetic variation among N. tazetta species, even collected from different regions of Turkey, N. poeticus, N. pseudonarsis, N. jonquilla and N. serotinus had more genetic divergence among them. It can be concluded that genetic variation of Narcissus species can be used for daffodil breeding programs. ********* In press - Online First. Ensuite, un bref historique viendra mettre en lumière les fondements de l’éducation par l’aventure. Finalement, les perspectives qu’elle offre en matière de levier de changements scolaires et sociaux seront mises en évidence à travers un exemple vécu dans la Commission scolaire de la Jonquière.

Cet article analyse les enjeux de la financiarisation pour la négociation collective, point de rencontre de la stratégie syndicale et de la stratégie d’affaire de l’entreprise. À partir d’une analogie entre la théorie financière de l’option et la négociation collective, nous montrons ses implications sur la sécurité d’emploi et les conditions de travail dans les établissements à partir du cas du complexe Jonquière d’Alcan au Québec. La financiarisation n’est donc pas une « externalité » du système économique, mais bien une nouvelle forme de régulation. La recherche illustre ainsi le caractère performatif de la finance sur les relations du travail.

Résumé Le présent article décrit en détail la technique du jeu de rôle orienté vers les solutions et utilisée en groupe de réadaptation pour hommes au Centre de réadaptation en toxicomanie 02 du Centre hospitalier de Jonquière. Cette technique peut être utilisée spontanément ou à partir de mises en situation. Dans ce dernier cas, les jeux de rôle sont filmés et leur visionnement (vidéorétroaction) permet aux clients de se percevoir comme des acteurs (non comme des consommateurs passifs) capables de modifier leur style de vie et leur environnement. L'expérience, qui est des plus appréciées malgré le stress positif qu'elle engendre, s'avère pour la clientèle une belle occasion de relever un défi.

Le département d’éducation spécialisée du Cégep de Jonquière assure quotidiennement la formation d’étudiants en situation de handicap (ÉSH), qui représentent le quart des étudiants qui le fréquentent. Nous avons mené une recherche dans une perspective bioécologique afin de brosser un portrait des caractéristiques des ÉSH inscrits en techniques d’éducation spécialisée (TES) et de connaître les attitudes, les rôles et les stratégies pédagogiques privilégiés pour les soutenir. Dans ce contexte, nous avons réalisé une analyse qualitative d’entrevues individuelles semi-dirigées menées auprès de sept enseignantes. Nos résultats révèlent que leur point de vue sur les besoins des ÉSH est, somme toute, positif et empreint d’espoir pour leur réussite scolaire.

Abstract:

Narcissus L. is a renowned plant genus with a notable center of diversity and is primarily located in the Mediterranean region. These plants are widely recognized for their ornamental value, owing to the beauty of their flowers; nonetheless, they also hold pharmacological importance. In Europe, pharmaceutical companies usually use the bulbs of Narcissus pseudonarcissus cv. Carlton to extract galanthamine, which is one of the few medications approved by the FDA for the palliative treatment of mild-to-moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of these plants in Alzheimer’s disease. The alkaloid extract from the leaves of different species of Narcissus was obtained by an acid-base extraction work-up -procedure. The biological potential of the samples was carried out by evaluating their ability to inhibit the enzymes acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase (AChE and BuChE, respectively). The species N. jacetanus exhibited the best inhibition values against AChE, with IC50 values of 0.75 ± 0.03 µg·mL−1, while N. jonquilla was the most active against BuChE, with IC50 values of 11.72 ± 1.15 µg·mL−1.

Abstract:

The Saguenay - Lake Saint-Jean region was only settled during the past one hundred years but now contains a population of approximately 260,000 (1961). This rapid growth of population is explained in great measure by an exceptionally high rate of natural increase. Much urbanisation bas recently occurred, particularly in the upper Saguenay area where the conurbation consisting of Chicoutimi, Jonquiere, Kénogami, Arvida, Bagotville and Port-Alfred now bas a population of over 110,000. The regional economy is based to a certain extent upon agriculture, with a specialisation in dairy farming. However, the principal emphasis is upon the aluminium and paper industries, which are supported by the great local hydro-electric power resources. The local economy is, however, dangerously subject to fluctuations of the international market.

Les villes de Chicoutimi, Jonquière-Kénogami, Arvida et Port-Alfred-Bagotville sont de plus en plus envisagées en tant qu'ensemble urbain et constituent ce qu'on appelle, depuis une douzaine d'années, la Conurbation du Saguenay. Sans être totalement contiguës, elles sont, en effet, suffisamment rapprochées pour entretenir entre elles des relations de complémentarité et chacune n'en demeure pas moins bien individualisée. Dans le présent article, cette individualité est démontrée par l'examen de leurs structures spatiales respectives, dont l'arrangement présente peu de points communs avec celles des quartiers d'une même ville ou des dépendances d'une « ville-centrale ». Quant à leur complémentarité, elle est exprimée au moyen d'un « taux de dépendance » dont le calcul s'effectue en s'inspirant du concept du « Minimum requirement », de Ullman et Dacey.

Saint-Jean-Eudes est un quartier situé à la limite des arrondissements de Chicoutimi et de Jonquière, à Saguenay. Enclavé entre l’usine de Rio Tinto et la rivière Saguenay, il a subi de nombreux changements au cours des dernières années. Puisqu’il est l’un des derniers quartiers de Saguenay à avoir conservé les caractéristiques d’un secteur ouvrier jusqu’aux années 2000, il constitue un cas d’intérêt pour étudier et comprendre les transformations d’un quartier ouvrier. Ce texte présente les résultats d’une recherche qualitative effectuée dans la perspective de la sociologie urbaine. L’étude permet d’observer comment les changements sociaux et économiques survenus au cours des dernières décennies ont modifié les rapports sociaux dans ce territoire urbain et ont transformé les modes de vie des habitants ainsi que les perceptions de l’environnement industriel du quartier.

Les cours en bibliotechnique au Québec remontent au premier stage en bibliothéconomie de La Pocatière en juillet 1964. Le collège de Jonquière fut, en 1966, le premier à offrir des cours reconnus par un diplôme d’études collégiales. Trois cegep l’offrirent en 1966, deux en 1969, un en 1971, un en 1972. Deux autres collèges l’offriront, l’un en 1973 et l’autre en 1974. Deux comités du ministère de l’Education travaillent à l’élaboration des programmes et à l’étude du marché du travail. Au Canada anglophone, treize institutions offrent des cours de bibliotechnique; ces cours durent une année ou deux. A cause des difficultés d’emploi, un nouveau programme de Techniques de la documentation sera mis sur pied prochainement. Des normes pour l’enseignement de la bibliotechnique ont été proposées à la DIGEC à l’automne 1972...

Résumé Les auteurs de ce rapport appliquent des données tirées des déclarations personnelles de revenus à l’analyse des répartitions et des écarts entre répartitions du revenu des hommes et des femmes entre 1969 et 1981 dans quatre agglomérations urbaines du Canada : Chicoutimi-Jonquière, London, Saskatoon et Sudbury. Ces régions ont connu des fortunes économiques diverses au cours de la décennie étudiée. Un modèle paramétrique de répartition du revenu est ajusté aux répartitions des revenus d’emploi selon le sexe et l’âge, et des indicateurs d’inégalité de répartition et d’inégalités entre répartitions en sont dérivés. Les effets de certaines variables socio-économiques sur ces indicateurs sont analysés par régression. Les résultats montrent que le modèle de répartition du revenu et la base de données administratives employés sont des outils utiles pour l’analyse et l’interprétation des inégalités de revenu.

La région métropolitaine de recensement de Chicoutimi-Jonquière est située au centre géographique de la région du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean et constitue l'un des territoires les plus urbanisés au Québec. À partir des données de 1991 du recensement de la population canadienne, l'étude propose une vision synthèse de la structure sociorésidentielle saguenéenne dégagée au moyen des méthodes de l'écologie sociale. Les résultats font ressortir d'importantes disparités entre la composition sociale des différents quartiers des trois villes principales et mettent en évidence des oppositions assez marquées entre les municipalités périurbaines et urbaines du territoire. Le repérage de trois zones socio-économiques et de huit aires sociales distinctes, de même que la description détaillée de chacune d'entre elles, ajoutent à la compréhension des inégalités sociales. Enfin, les auteurs se questionnent sur la dynamique de l'apparition de telles inégalités dans le contexte de l'homogénéité ethnoculturelle qui caractérise la population saguenéenne, notamment en faisant ressortir certains faits historiques à propos du mode d'appropriation du territoire.

Résumé Depuis une décennie, les réorganisations politico-administratives locales et régionales sont fréquentes en Occident. Le Québec n’échappe pas à la tendance avec la réforme municipale en cours. Les regroupements de municipalités de 2001 ont ainsi affecté les six régions métropolitaines de la province et plusieurs agglomérations de plus petite taille. Cet article a pour objectif de faire ressortir les enjeux territoriaux de l’intégration socio-économique et fonctionnelle de ces nouveaux espaces politiques. À cette fin, nous regarderons la situation de Saguenay au Québec. Cette ville moyenne en région périphérique se distingue à divers égards. Elle est une agglomération possédant plusieurs centres d’affaires ayant des caractéristiques propres. Ceux-ci correspondent aux secteurs centraux des anciennes villes de Chicoutimi, Jonquière et La Baie. Par ailleurs, Saguenay est le coeur d’un espace rural agro-forestier qui possède maintenant une autonomie administrative compte tenu de la création d’une nouvelle municipalité régionale de comté (MRC). Comment seront gérées les dynamiques intra-urbaines et régionales dans le contexte de cette réorganisation administrative?

Abstract:

Alkaloidal extracts of six selected species of Amaryllidaceae were studied with respect to their antibacterial and anti-yeast activity and their alkaloidal fingerprint. Twenty-five alkaloids were determined by GC/MS, and sixteen of them identified from their mass spectra, retention times and retention indexes. In the antimicrobial assay, Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus were used, along with isolates of the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. dubliniensis and Lodderomyces elongiosporus. The six extracts, together with 19 Amaryllidaceae alkaloids isolated in our laboratory, showed almost no inhibitory activity against the bacteria tested. However, promising anti-yeast properties were detected; the most potent activity was shown by lycorine, which inhibited C. dubliniensis with a MIC of 32 μg/mL, C. albicans and L. elongiosporus, both with MICs of 64 μg/mL, followed by caranine inhibiting C. dubliniensis with a MIC of 128 μg/mL. Among the alkaloidal extracts, Narcissus jonquilla cv. Baby Moon showed the most potent anti-yeast activity, with minimal and average MIC values of 128 and 192 μg/mL, respectively, followed by Leucojum aestivum, Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus and N. canaliculatus (average MICs 256, 267 and 299 μg/mL, respectively). Alkaloid extracts of eight Narcissus (Amaryllidaceae) species and varieties were studied with respect to their acetylcholinesterase (HuAChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (HuBuChE) inhibitory activity and alkaloid patterns. Thirty alkaloids were determined by GC/MS, and twenty-five of them identified from their mass spectra, retention times and retention indexes. Promising HuAChE inhibition activity was demonstrated by six Narcissus taxa and HuBuChE inhibition by N. jonquila cv. Double Campernelle and N. nanus cv. Elka with IC50 values of 24.1 ± 1.9 μg/mL and 25.1 ± 1.8 μg/mL, respectively. Two alkaloids were isolated in pure form using preparative TLC and identified as the galanthamine type alkaloid narwedine and the lycorine type alkaloid incartine. Both compounds were tested for their biological activity. They were considered inactive in HuAChE/HuBuChE assays, but showed promising prolyl oligopeptidase inhibition activities with IC50 values of 0.95 ± 0.12 mM and 0.91 ± 0.09 mM, respectively.

Abstract:

Ornamental geophytes, renowned for their beauty, hold a special place among flower enthusiasts and producers, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of gardens and orchards. The main aim of this study was to ascertain the viability of cultivating decay-resistant genotypes and identify appropriate planting locations for each species within a one-to-three-year timeframe, contingent upon the specific species. The research took place at the Flower and Plant Production Center of the Gorgan Municipality’s Landscape and Urban Green Space Organization in Iran, with the primary focus on leveraging various geophyte flower species to optimize urban landscapes and elevate their visual allure. Utilizing a completely randomized block design with three replications, the study examined numerous species in the landscape. Various plant growth parameters were evaluated, including flowering time, optimal planting time, flower longevity on the plants, speed of underground bulb sprouting time, and visual quality of the samples. Results revealed that Narcissus jonquilla and Alstroemeria aurea cv. Balance exhibited the longest flower longevity, lasting for 43 days in the second year of growth. Conversely, Gladiolus hybrida (cv. Alexander) and Canna indica (cv. Flaccida and cv. Phasion) demonstrated a flower longevity of 13 days across both cultivation years. Alstroemeria and Crocosmia showed the shortest flowering time, significantly reduced compared to the first year due to the altered planting time. The assessment of visual quality highlighted Polianthes, Dahlia, and Gladiolus cultivars as displaying the highest visual appeal among the studied species. These findings yield valuable insights into the potential production and/or breeding of decay-resistant hybrid cultivars well suited for such regions.

Abstract: Being located in the centre of cultural heritage area of Kotabaru, city of Yogyakarta, the Saint Anthony Catholic Church then is known as Kotabaru Church (Dutch: Nieuw Wijk Katholieke Kerk). The church is located in Abu Bakar Ali street (Boulevard Jonquiere) and I Dewa Nyoman Oka street (Sultansboulevard). As one of the eldest churches in the city, the church was built during the colonial time and inaugurated in 1926 by Mgr. A. Van Velsen SJ, the Bishop of Jakarta. In 2014 The Saint Anthony Church was stated as a cultural heritage building. In October 2016 the Church bought a piece of land with a building on it, adjacent to its parish house. The two story building was half constructed, developed from a single story Indische architectural style building which unfortunately was already destroyed, leaving only a small part of its original building entrance. The building was planned to be functioned as the new parish house with a spatial connection to the old parish house. Despite the strong recommendation to reduce the expenses by making minimum physical changes, the building especially the façade should be redesigned as far as possible to be restored to its original façade and according to the requirements as an Indische architectural style building. As a part of the cultural heritage buildings in the area of Kotabaru, the new parish house should perform contextual architectural style and elements. Furthermore, the design results are proposed three alternatives and presented in the form of floorplans and elevations.Abstrak: Terletak di tengah kawasan cagar budaya Kotabaru, Kota Yogyakarta, Gereja Katolik Santo Antonius kemudian dikenal dengan nama Gereja Kotabaru (Bahasa Belanda: Nieuw Wijk Katholieke Kerk). Gereja tersebut terletak di Jalan Abu Bakar Ali (Boulevard Jonquiere) dan Jalan I Dewa Nyoman Oka (Sultansboulevard). Sebagai salah satu gereja tertua di kota Yogyakarta, gereja ini dibangun pada masa kolonial dan diresmikan pada tahun 1926 oleh Mgr. A. Van Velsen SJ, Uskup Jakarta. Pada tahun 2014 Gereja Santo Antonius ditetapkan sebagai bangunan cagar budaya. Pada bulan Oktober 2016 Gereja membeli sebidang tanah dengan sebuah bangunan di atasnya, bersebelahan dengan rumah parokinya. Bangunan berlantai dua ini setengah dibangun, dikembangkan dari bangunan bergaya arsitektur Indische berlantai satu yang sayangnya sudah hancur, hanya menyisakan sebagian kecil dari entrance bangunan aslinya. Gedung tersebut rencananya akan difungsikan sebagai rumah paroki baru dengan keterkaitan spasial dengan rumah paroki lama. Meskipun ada rekomendasi kuat untuk mengurangi biaya dengan melakukan perubahan fisik seminimal mungkin, bangunan terutama fasad harus didesain ulang sejauh mungkin untuk dikembalikan ke fasad aslinya dan sesuai dengan persyaratan sebagai bangunan bergaya arsitektur Indische. Sebagai bagian dari bangunan cagar budaya di wilayah Kotabaru, rumah paroki baru hendaknya menampilkan gaya dan elemen arsitektur yang kontekstual. Selanjutnya, hasil rancangan diusulkan 3 alternatif dan disajikan dalam bentuk denah dan tampak bangunan.

Pour mieux répondre aux besoins de leurs étudiants en situation de handicap, le département d’éducation spécialisée a participé à une recherche-action-formation permettant la conception et la mise à l’essai du programme « T’ES prêt ». Dans ce contexte, des entrevues qualitatives semi-dirigées ont été réalisées auprès des enseignantes (n=4) qui ont animé les activités du programme afin de connaitre leur point de vue sur ce dernier. Les résultats montrent que les enseignantes avaient des appréhensions reliées aux exigences que demande l’implantation d’un tel programme, mais soulèvent cinq éléments qui ont facilité son déploiement.

RÉSUMÉSe fondant sur l'hypothèse d'une origine multifactorielle de la maladie d'Alzheimer (MA), nous explorons les liens possibles entre la répartition géographique de 102 sujets diagnostiqués « définitifs, » « probables » et « possibles » à la survenue de la maladie, et l'écologie sociale de l'agglomération de Chicoutimi-Jonquière (ACJ) au Saguenay (Québec). Nous nous intéressons également au niveau de scolarité de 74 sujets « définitifs » et « probables ». Les méthodes de l'analyse factorielle (en composantes principales) et de l'analyse de groupement (méthode Ward) ont permis d'identifier des zones socio-économiques et des aires sociales homogènes dans l'ACJ. Les premiers résultats indiquent, d'une part, que le rapport de masculinité observé chez les cas de MA diffère statistiquement de celui du groupe d'âge à risque (45 ans et plus) dans la population saguenéenne. La maladie affecte plus de femmes que d'hommes. D'autre part, des analyses d'eacute;cologie sociale ont établi qu'il existe une différenciation sociale significative dans l'ACJ, soit trois zones socio-économiques et huit aires sociales distinctes. Cependant, les 102 sujets se répartissent aléatoirement dans l'ensemble de l'ACJ, quelque soit la zone socio-économique ou l'aire sociale considérée. L'analyse de la répartition géographique du groupe que constituent les cas « définitifs » et « probables » suggère également une distribution au hasard. Le caractère aléatoire de la répartition des sujets est confirmé par une très forte correspondance entre, d'une part, la distribution observée des cas par secteur de dénombrement ou par secteur de recensement et, d'autre part, la distribution théorique de Poisson. Il existe une différence significative entre la scolarité des sujets et celle de la population âgée de 65 ans et plus. Une étude plus approfondie, de type cas-témoins par exemple, devrait nous permettre éventuellement de faire la lumière à ce chapitre.

ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the effect of a preoperative parasternal plane block (PSB) on opioid consumption required to maintain hemodynamic stability during sternotomy for coronary artery bypass graft surgery.MethodsThis double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial prospectively enrolled 35 patients scheduled for coronary artery bypass graft surgery under general anesthesia with propofol and remifentanil. Patients were randomized to receive preoperative PSB using either ropivacaine (PSB group) or saline solution (placebo group) (1:1 ratio). The primary endpoint was the maximal effect-site concentration of remifentanil required to maintain heart rate and blood pressure within the recommended ranges during sternotomy.ResultsMedian maximum concentration of remifentanil necessary to maintain adequate hemodynamic status during sternotomy was significantly reduced in PSB group (4.2 (2.5–6.0) ng/mL) compared with placebo group (7.0 (5.2–8.0) ng/mL) (p=0.02). Mean maximum concentration of propofol used to control depth of anesthesia was also reduced (3.9±1.1 µg/mL vs 5.0±1.5 µg/mL, PSB vs placebo, respectively; p=0.02). This reduction in propofol consumption during sternotomy enabled a more adequate level of sedation to be maintained in patients (minimum patient state index was 11.7±8.7 in placebo group and 18.3±6.8 in PSB group; p=0.02). PSB reduced postoperative inflammatory response by limiting concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines IL-8, IL-18, IL-23, IL-33 and MCP-1 measured in the first 7-day after surgery (p<0.05).ConclusionsPreoperative PSB reduced the maximum concentrations of remifentanil and propofol required to maintain hemodynamic stability and depth of anesthesia during sternotomy.Trial registration numberNCT03734159.Sébastien Bloc, M.D.1,2; Brieuc P. Abstract:

Business event as fieldwork site? A major methodological problem in the ethnographic study of international business elites is to make visible the social relations they draw and depend on. Business elites constitute a highly mobile social category and they mediate a growing portion of everyday social interaction via online, digital means. They are elusive, therefore, and that compromises the possibility of making direct observations of their social practices, which erodes the scope to ethnographically study this important group in the world economy. The essay shows how fieldwork on business events, such as conferences, expositions, and trade fairs, can help to overcome this problem. Such events constitute focal points and moments of crystallization in globally operating social networks, making visible a part of the international business ‘theatre’ that normally lags hidden. By presenting excerpts from recent fieldwork carried out in Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands, I give an impression of observables in this theatre, aiming especially at fostering an awareness of social behavior ‘backstage’ with a view to formulating further questions. The essay concludes with a plea to include business events as ‘field schools’ in study programs looking at international business elites, such as business schools and/or business economics.

Abstract:

Problems of evidence in ethnography: A methodological exploration of the Goffman and Mead controversies Ethnographic authority in the post-truth era is contested and the discussion revolves around the credibility of ethnographic evidence. Doubting ethnographic evidence is usually explained as the consequence of postmodern relativism coupled to political opportunism and the social impact of the Internet. This article argues, however, that evidence in ethnography comprises a much older, unresolved methodological problem. That is because: (1) the ethnographers’ unique observations are difficult to marry to the scientific ideal of replication and what other tests are then available to support direct observation? (2) social proximity to the community one studies is essential for making direct observations and how does that correspond to the ideal of outsider verification? (3) when reporting ethnographic thick description in a credible way, facts are considered central but is it possible to write on ethnography in an interesting way without resorting to the instruments of fiction? These methodological challenges are further explored in a comparative discussion of two ethnographic controversies – Margaret Mead’s Coming of age in Samoa (1973) and Alice Goffman’s On the run: Fugitive life in an American city (2014). I conclude with a proposal for methodological rules of thumb for conducting ethnographic research in the 21st century in a way that is (hopefully) both effective and convincing. In a short reaction Fred Wester defines scientific facts (including ethnographic facts) are produced by scientific procedures. Scientific observations have a conceptual and methodical context. In Beuvings discussions the conceptual ground of ethnographic observations are hardly discussed and his definition of replication is too limited as method for qualitative research.
