Ahmad, Hamidah. "Environmental experiences of Malaysian adolescents in two neighbourhoods in Johor Bahru, Malaysia." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2007. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6115/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has addressed gaps in knowledge relating to environmental experiences of Malaysian adolescents in two neighbourhoods in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This thesis discusses how the adolescents' experiences may differ from adults' assumptions and planning. The study begins by highlighting current issues relating to adolescents and urban open space planning and design in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Survey questionnaires were used as a research tool to reveal adolescents' time use and environmental experiences of their housing area, neighbourhood and the city. The time use not only revealed their activities but also places they liked or valued and their ideal housing neighbourhood environment. Time use data diaries and interviews were used to verify the data from the questionnaire and to seek more specific data of what they wanted from their outdoor environment. The findings of the research elucidate that there were both similarities and differences in Malaysian adolescents' use of their outdoor environment across different ethnic backgrounds, genders and ages. It is concluded that inadequacies existed in current Johor Bahru urban planning in addressing the needs of the adolescents. Furthermore, from this study, the Malaysian adolescents assigned attributes or specific criteria to the facilities and spaces they wanted within their housing area, neighbourhood and the city. The facilities and spaces they wanted were linked to their physical and social activities which they would like to do. The attributes assigned by the Malaysian adolescents are elements of play, variety, ambience, size, safety, fun and excitement, challenge, walkable, aesthetic and green, sociability, accessibility, intelligent and possessing affordances for sports activities. Based on the research findings, this study outlines recommendations for Malaysian housing and neighbourhood landscape in relation to adolescents' needs. Early consideration of adolescents' needs should be incorporated in the planning and design process. One of the recommendations should include providing opportunities for Malaysian adolescents' participation to determine their needs for facilities and spaces in housing area and the city during the planning and design stage.

Large urban megaprojects costing billions of US dollars, erected with the promise of great economic benefits but controversial due to their environmental and social impacts, are becoming more common throughout the world. Most popular in the Middle East and in Asia, such projects exemplify how forces of globalization engage with urban form. Urban megaprojects are increasingly pursued by foreign developers looking to expand abroad but often face challenges operating in unfamiliar political and regulatory settings. Chinese developers, in particular, have global ambitions but may conflict with local priorities as they extend their reach overseas. Forest City is a vast luxury real estate development by Chinese developer Country Garden on 14 square kilometers of reclaimed land spread over four islands on the Malaysian side of the Straits of Johor, the strip of water which separates it from Singapore. This study uses Forest City as a case study to investigate the key themes associated with large urban mega projects and the impacts they have on a region. Among them is the notion that such projects are considered "exceptional" and therefore bypass traditional planning and development controls. Actors external to planning and development are suspected of co-opting the process for their own interests. Evidence collected during fieldwork from July-August 2015 and January 2016 suggests that Forest City fits neatly within these patterns and sheds light on the patterns of influence in urban development throughout the region. The case also suggests several lessons for Chinese developers operating abroad.

Anang, Zuraini. "Assessing the effective demand for improved water supply service in Malaysia : focusing on Johor Water Company." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1842.

Full text
Abstract:
In Malaysia, the water management system was restructured in January 2005 by the transfer of water supplies and services from the State List to the Concurrent List. The National Water Services Commission or Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) was established in July 2006 as the technical and economic regulator for the improvement of water supply quality and the efficiency of the water industry. This study focuses on SAJ Holdings (SAJH). This water supply company provides a fully integrated service, i.e. it is involved in the all the processes of drinking water supply; these range from raw water acquisition, treatment and purification, and the subsequent distribution of purified water to customers, plus billing and payment collection. This study attempts to assess the residential customers‟ preferences of different attributes of water supply. The water attributes are divided into two categories: Water Infrastructure (WI) and Residential Customers (RC). WI attributes are leakage, pipe bursts, and reservoirs; RC attributes are water quality, pressure, connections, and disruptions. Choice modelling (CM) was applied as a tool for the assessment of effective demand for improved water supplies, particularly by residential customers. There are two econometric models employed: Conditional Logit (CL) and Mixed Logit (MXL). Face-to-face interviews were conducted with residential customers and Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) was used in order to analyse the data. The model consists of a basic model and an interaction model with socioeconomic characteristics. The findings show that the significant variables affecting demand are pipe bursts, (BUR), water quality (QUA), disruption (DIS) and connection (CON), as well as price (PRI). Among the socioeconomic characteristics that interact with the main attributes are gender, age, number of children, type of house, number of persons in the household, education, work, and income. This information is very useful for the water provider when upgrading the water service for valuable customers.

Bin, Che Amat Muhammad Asyran. "Assessment of long-term deformation in Johor, Malaysia using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/47430/.

Full text
Abstract:
Information about deformation in an area has become vital not only for safety assessment but also for maintenance of geodetic infrastructures. The latter is necessary to support accurate surveying and mapping applications. This research exploits the complementary features of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques to assess the long-term deformation in Johor, Malaysia, which can be induced by natural and/or anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, modelling and mitigation of tropospheric effects in GPS and InSAR are addressed to achieve the best possible precision from the two techniques. Indeed, their modelling and mitigation improve the quality of the estimation as well as provide valuable resources for atmospheric studies. The assessment of long-term deformation in Johor is firstly made by analysing the five years (2007 - 2011) point-specific profile at eight Malaysia Real-Time Kinematic GNSS Network (MyRTKnet) stations. Two processing strategies, namely Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and Double-Difference (DD), are employed to assess their capability for deformation monitoring. The latter also make used of the GPS data from 27 IGb08 stations and 7 International GNSS Service (IGS) stations. Analysis of the results revealed deformation that can be explained by plate tectonic movement and earthquakes in the surrounding region. While results from the PPP processing showed a higher correlation with the recorded earthquakes, the results from DD have improved correlation coefficients at about 4% in the East-West and 5% in the Up-Down components. These improvements are valuable when the rate of deformation is the primary interest. In addition to the point-specific profile, the surrounding deformation of Johor has been assessed with the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity maps from the InSAR time-series. Two sets of ERS-1/2 data, consisting a total of 67 images acquired at two descending tracks (i.e. track 75 and 347), are utilised for the generation of the maps. Moreover, the feasibility of Sentinel-1 satellites is also tested, which revealed improved coherence owing to their short revisit cycle. Some part of Johor showed subsidence and uplift trends, which also agreed with the literature. This information cannot be perceived by the GPS alone due to its limited coverage; hence, further attests to the benefit of their joint analysis. Numerous developments have been implemented in the in-house software (i.e. Punnet) such as the implementation of tropospheric correction, outlier’s rejection scheme, statistical analysis to identify the control point for phase unwrapping, and a new method to retrieve temporal evolution of deformation for a rapidly deforming area.

Othman, Asiah. "The effect of the planning system on housing development : a study of developers behaviour in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, Malaysia." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.287699.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the effect of the Malaysian planning system on housing development. It focuses on the developers' behaviour in two areas with different planning regimes, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. The thesis attempts to explore the interactions of developers with government policies, rules and regulation imposed by the local planning authority in each area. The structure and agency model is used as the main methodological approach to explain the behavioural aspects of developers' activity, in particular looking at the developers' response towards planning controls. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches is used to analyse information from the survey and the interviews. The quantitative analysis provides the broad context of the study and identifies the differences between the two areas. The emphasis on the qualitative approach provides the research with richer, more insightful findings which could not be revealed quantitatively. Even though developers perceive the local planning authority in Johor Bahru to be exercising a stricter planning regime than in Kuala Lumpur, the study reveals that developers in both areas face common problems relating to land availability, planning delays and increasing costs of development. To overcome these problems the developers have employed various strategies, such as land bank, 'rent-seeking' and phasing. The findings reveal that the success of these strategies varies between the two areas which ultimately affect the development of housing in these areas. The problems should be addressed by both the government and the developers in order to ensure the achievement of the housing programme. In addition to the corrective measures by the developers, the approval authority should review the overall procedure, regulations and policies, which have had cost implications. The study suggests the needs for the element of certainty in the planning systems.

Jaffri, Hadijah. "Conception of giftedness and talent by pre service and in service primary school teachers in Johor, Malaysia : an exploration using a multiphase mixed methods design." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3937/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the conception of giftedness and talent as perceived by pre service and in service primary school teachers in Malaysia. In addition, this study aims to explore teachers’ perceptions of giftedness on specific issues which are a) sources of information about giftedness, b) confidence in identifying gifted and talented students, c) awareness on identifying assessments, d) perception about the adequacy of teacher training to deal with gifted and talented students, e) relevance of labelling, and f) aspects considered as important in the development of gifted education in Malaysia which are primarily explored using qualitative approaches. To explore those various issues, a mixed methods design was used in this study involving pre service (n = 546) and in service primary school teachers (n = 632). Structured questionnaires were administered to 1178 teachers at various locations of education institutions (e.g. schools, institutes of teacher education and universities). Six female teachers were involved in the qualitative data collection using semi-structured questionnaires and interviews. Two main types of analyses were used. First, the patterns of teachers’ notion of giftedness and talent are examined using principal component analysis. In addition to that, descriptive analysis was used to provide preliminary findings of this study. Also, independent t-test was used to examine any difference between groups. Second, thematic analysis was used to uncover thematic code (variables) from relevant responses. The findings from quantitative and qualitative data were integrated to answer two research questions. Based from the integration of both findings, it was found that teachers’ conception of giftedness and talent is diverse and this reflect on the current situation in which there is no consensus on the conception of giftedness and talent among theorists. In addition, Malaysian teachers reported that ‘gifted’ and ‘talented’ are separate groups of individuals with extraordinary abilities. Giftedness is perceived in relation to intellectual abilities and to certain extent, domain specific to mathematics and science. Talent is perceived in relation to non-intellective abilities such as domain of psychomotor abilities. Even though gifted and talented are perceived as non-unitary concept, both are perceived sharing similar characteristics such as creativity and domain specific of ability. In this study, it was discovered that giftedness is perceived in relation to intellective domain whereas talent is related to non-intellective domain. The qualitative findings suggested that teachers view giftedness and talent somewhat differently. The variations are explored to in this study which could be attributed to the inadequacy of information from various sources and teacher training and/or experience. The nuances of their understanding on varied aspects in relation to this phenomenon called as giftedness call for more exploration as this study only provides preliminary evidence on the existing conception of giftedness and talent as held by teachers in Malaysia.

Loh, S. H., and n/a. "Resettlement training and factors affecting employment of ex-servicemen in Malaysia - a case study." University of Canberra. Education, 1994. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20050426.140714.

Full text
Abstract:
Unemployment was a major problem faced by the ex-servicemen in Malaysia since the early seventies. Recognising the needs of ex-servicemen, the government through the organisation of the Veterans Affairs Division (VAD) introduced the resettlement program for the ex-servicemen with the aim of assisting the veterans to find employment. However despite the implementation of training programs, the rate of unemployment among the ex-servicemen was relatively very high, whilst the extent of the as well as the underlying factors remained unknown, with the resultant ambiguity of the role of VAD. This case study was designed to investigate issues related to the employment situation of the ex-servicemen by surveying those in the capital territory of Kuala Lumpur and the states of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, who participated in resettlement training and were discharged in 1993. In addition the states of Johor, Perak and Penang were included for the survey on the non participants of resettlement training. The study found that the rate of employment of the ex-servicemen in the states surveyed was substantially lower than that of the national average. The study also found that participation in the resettlement training organised by the VAD had significant effect on increasing the rate of employment besides higher income, shorter period of unemployment, better readjustment and higher satisfaction with civilian life. Among the factors analysed, ability to speak English and the economic activity and the stage of development of the states were found to have significance influence on the rate of employment. Other factors found to be associated with the employment of the ex-servicemen included age, education level, rank, urban or rural background, and matching of training to application. Based on the findings of this case study recommendations were made to improve the selectivity of, and access to, resettlement training by all ex-servicemen. Other recommendations included improving the standard of education and spoken English before discharge, lowering age of discharge with pension, provision of information related to employment and counselling service, setting up of data bank of ex-servicemen and further research.

Nur, Yoslan. "L'île de Batam dans le triangle de croissance de Singapour, Johore et Riau : développement économique et aménagement de l'espace." Paris 8, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA081393.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of batam, an indonesian island with a 415 km2 area, located at 20 km southeast of singapore, started in the earlier 1970's and was aimed to compete with singapore as the economic capital of the southeast asia region. But at the end of 1980's, the batam's economic development was integrated with singapore's in the economic cooperation of growth triangle of singapore, johor et riau (more famous as +sijori;). The goal of this cooperation is to promote the regional economic development by a transborder cooperation. The integration of batam on the growth triangle of sijori is a very efficient means to promote the development of the island, that is shown by: the increase of private investment, the creation of jobs in industrial, tourism and services sectors, the fast rising of the growth regional product (grp), of the value of exports, of the tourist number and of the number of migrants to the island. This fast urban increasing has the following side effects : the crisis of housing for the poors, the crisis of urban transportation and the shortage of clean water. Because of the shift between the rate of jobs creation and the rate of immigration, unemployment increased. The problem of unemployment leads to the growing number of crimes and offenses. From the urbanisme point of view, the integration of batam in the sijori growth triangle caused the transformation of the urban structure of batam. At the regional scale, the sijori growth triangle economic cooperation placed batam in two hierarchical systems of development: the growth triangle which is the most important and riau islands inner the indonesian national teritory at the second rank. Each system is connected to the economic policy from which a specific spatial policy is drawn up. The sijori growth triangle plans the region as an economic pole at global scale, with singapore as a regional center, meanwhile the riau islands are projected by the indonesian goverment to become an industrial pole integrated to the growth triangle and batam island to be a regional center in indonesia

Bakar, Mohd Sarofil Abu Bakar. "Children's drawings as research tool : establishing children's environmental concepts and preferences with reference to urban open space planning and design in Johore Bahru, Malaysia." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2002. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15049/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate meanings and concepts of children's drawings from cultural and gender perspectives using appropriate qualitative techniques and methods for interpreting drawing. This thesis discusses how children's concepts and preferences may differ from adults' thinking and planning. The study starts with a discussion of various issues of relating to children and urban planning and design in Johore Bahru, Malaysia. This is followed by a review of the psychology of children's drawings; the use of children's drawings in environmental research; the provision for and children's use of urban environments, and the state of Johore Bahru's urban environmental planning. Through the literature review, this research studies "Western" models from interdisciplinary perspectives. The children's drawings were used as a research tool to reveal their concepts of home landscape and activities they preferred in an ideal residential neighbourhood environment. Data from questionnaires and essays were used to check evidence found in drawings. In all, 114 Malay, Chinese and Indian children from seven primary schools in urban Johore Bahru completed the tasks. The findings of qualitative content analysis and interpretation of drawings showed similarities and differences across cultures and genders in environmental concepts and preferences which may indicate shortcomings in current urban planning. Children's drawings provide valuable information on the development of children's environmental concepts and preferences of ideal home landscape. The concepts are represented in the form of diverse, safe, colourful and accessible naturalistic environments for exploration, learning, play and socialising with peers. This finding will help future research projects by providing information indicating issues and problems in provision of open spaces within the urban planning system. The thesis concludes with a critical commentary on the likely use of children's drawing as research tool, children's environmental needs and preferences, together with the possibility of child participation in decision making, planning and design process within the urban planning system in Malaysia.

Teu, Lay Leng (Bryan). "The terrace house and its air-well in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia (1970-2005)." 2010. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/8394.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past century, the urban population in the urban centres in Malaysia had significantly increased in size through extensive migration. Terrace houses have become the most common urban habitats in the densely populated urban centres throughout Peninsular of Malaysia in recent decades.
There is an on-going concern on identifying efficient ventilation and lighting solution for local housing. This research thesis focuses on ventilation components, specifically the air-well, which is a traditional mechanism to provide natural air-flow and natural day-lighting. It will explain the morphological transformation of the air-well in the design of terrace houses in the city of Johor Bahru in the past three and a half decades. First of all, this thesis introduces the role of the air-well in the design for local urban habitats of terrace houses with air-well. In addition, it explores the impact of the use of the air-well on the design trends of terrace houses.
As Tetsu Kubota and Supian Ahmad have identified in their recent research that with the global energy crisis and population growth, a few of issues concerning the design of terrace houses have emerged: (a) How have the local architects adapt the design of air-well in terrace houses to achieve a passive design in achieving good natural ventilation and natural lighting in a high density urban habitats? (b) How has the design of the air-well evolved with the changing needs of local inhabitants of terrace houses from the 1970s to the year 2005?
This thesis focuses on the provision for natural ventilation and natural lighting under Malaysian Uniform Building By-laws in terrace houses design from the 1970s to the year 2005 in Johor Bahru. In order to evaluate the design development trends for terrace houses in Johor Bahru in the past three and a half decades, six houses have been identified as specimen based on a list of formulated criteria. These six selected houses have been used as case studies in the core research work for this thesis. The examination started by studying the design for each house by means of gathering three main types of drawings for each house: plans, elevations and sections. From these six cases, a historical trajectory of design trends as evolved over these decades in Johor Bahru is identified. Then from the drawings gathered, the design performance in the provision for natural ventilation and natural lighting for each house by utilising the Y-architects’ natural ventilation and natural lighting calculation table has been carried out.
The evolution of the air-well in terrace houses have been discussed in the final chapter and it can be divided into three main phases over the identified historical time line: introduction of the air-well from 1884 to the 1970s; the elimination of the air-well from 1980s to the year 2000; and a re-conciliation of the air-well from around 2005 onwards.
Finally, this thesis concludes with observations on the design idea of the air-well, as a fundamental intelligence. The air-well not only provides a good relation with nature, but also a passage to an essential amenity.

This article aims to investigate the formation and changes of a territorial society in the Malay Peninsula. Since the mid 18th century, numerous Chinese immigrants coming from Fujian and Guangdong Province sought economic opportunities in the prosper peninsula. By their origins and clans, these immigrants tend to divide themselves into various groups of “Bang”(幫群). Generally, interactions were stronger in ‘inter’ than ‘intra’ Bang. Economic conflicts and social tensions occurred frequently between different groups of people. The Bang relationship in Johor Bahru (hereafter “JB”) is unique, although the Chinese here were sub-divided into five distinctive Bangs, but their relationships were rather coherent. The comparatively integrated connections could be demonstrated by communal landscapes, such as burial ground, temple, and school. By the concept of “territorial society”, this article investigates the integrations between various Bang in JB since 1855 to 1942. To demonstrate this, this article first features the environment background of Johor. It then investigates the influx and the relationship of these Bangs to show their structuring and restructuring process. The article believes that, the integration of Chinese society in JB was highly base on its non competition and conflict environment. On this premise, there have two difference groups who were leading the Chinese society in specific period due to the changes of politics and economic circumstance. In mid 19th century, inhabitants of JB consist almost entirely of Teochews, the simple society was dominated by Ngee Heng Kongsi, a Teochew base secret society. During the declined of pepper and gambier economy in 20th century, the influence of Ngee Heng in Chinese society began to diminished gradually, the domination role was soon succeeded by merchants (or leaders) from various Bang. Although the social component in JB during 20th century became more complex, the Chinese society did not split up, but also follow the path of integration as before. The case of Bang integration in Chinese society of JB during 20th century may be highly related with their long-term interaction in the daily live over the past. Besides, the national identity of Chinese at that phase was also cannot be ignored. Generally, the changes and formation of Chinese society can be known as a dynamic process.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the production of a new regional space known as the Growth Triangle. The Growth Triangle represents a (re)integration of the economies of Singapore, the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia and Johor State in Malaysia. It is argued that the Growth Triangle should be seen as an ‘open region.’ The open region is affected by a wide range of ‘external’ influences and is open to shifting representations which are important to its unfolding. The study takes on the interpretation of the open region through a consideration of the unstable and amorphous realm of ‘middle space.’ Middle space is manifold. It includes: 1) the middle spaces between the global and the local; 2) the middle spaces between conceptual divisions (e.g., urban/rural and labour/capital); and 3) the middle spaces of circulation (i.e., connections between individuals, firms and places). The triangulation of these three arenas provides a heuristic device for the examination of the changes sweeping the Growth Triangle. The analysis moves from a time when the region’s global niche was based on the movement of goods to more recent developments where-in the movement of information and capital are crucial. The global flows of information and capital are the ‘winds’ of the title. The region, and various ways of conceptualizing it, are the ‘shadows.’ The main findings are that: 1) global change must be seen in terms of local roots and consequences; 2) local differentiation and the representation of difference are increasingly important, even in the frame of globalization; 3) analytic strength may be gained by dulling the edges of interpretive constructs (such as information or labour); 4) there are strong connections between the circulation of goods, people, money and information (spatial interaction) and the generation of new and distinct geographies (areal differentiation); and 5) there are strong linkages between Singapore’s shift towards advanced world city functions (‘intensive globalization’) and the mega-urbanization of the near-by international hinterlands (‘extensive globalization’). To understand each of the three corners of the Growth Triangle one must engage Singapore as a World City and as an Open Region.

Not only it can be seemed as a tool for develop identity to the ethnic that it serves, but also help the minority to integrate into the mainstream society. In Malaysia, the politics of difference is the source of non-Malay dissatisfaction. In this case, why and how the Malaysian Chinese medias represent the Malay Rulers who are also the symbol and protectors of the Malay privilege, and meanwhile claim to maintain the Chinese culture and oppose the racial hegemony? And how would the audiences react to these representations? By using the method of discourse analysis to five of the mainstream Chinese newspapers in Malaysia, this study found that besides showing the Sultan of Johor were deeply concerned about the public issues, the medias would report the history of good ties between the Johor royal and the Chinese community. Additionally, the medias would publish the news about the royal participate in all ethnic or religious group’s festival, or using the symbol of ethnic identity such as food or consanguinity as themes of news, to tighten or to demonstrate the relationship between the royal and the Chinese community. On these account, the newspapers not merely have fabricated the kindly image of Johor Sultan for all ethnic groups, including for those vulnerable groups, but rather an enlightened monarch who intolerance to racism. As a result, the medias had display a harmoniously multicultural phenomenon under the shelter from the Sultan. Furthermore, it brings out the message that the Sultan, a leader of nation, had recognize the equal rights of all ethnic. And to most of the audiences, who were interviewed in this dissertation, were highly appreciate for the jobs that the Sultan had done and supposed it may bring a positive impact on ethnic relations.
