Abstract:
The Darell family history provides a good illustration of the confused and conflicting religious loyalties in sixteenth and seventeenth century England. There were four branches of the family in southern England, all originally descended from William Darrell of Sesay, Yorkshire, in the early fifteenth century. The Pagham and Fulmere branches descended from William of Littlecote; the Calehill branch from John of Calehill by his first wife; and the Scotney branch from John of Calehill by his second wife, niece and heiress of Archbishop Chichele, who owned Scotney Castle. In this paper I am mainly concerned with the Calehill branch. Burton, in his life of Bishop Challoner, stated ‘they were always Catholics’ and he was followed by McGurk, but the head of the Calehill branch was not in fact a recusant until after 1694. From that time they were consistently Catholic.

Little is known of John Mirk. When he wrote Instructions, he was, its colophon informs us, a canon regular of Lilleshall priory, Shropshire. Lilleshall was a house of Arroasian canons, a branch of the Augustinian order, so named because its first house was that of St Nicholas, Arras. Lilleshall was founded in 1144–8, and contained some ten canons in 1400.

Among the works of John of Salisbury the short, unfinished treatise that we call the Historia Pontificalis represents his only incursion into the writing of conventional history.’ Indeed even this, like the Metalogicon, Policraticus and Entheticus, bears the stamp of his unique individual approach to any branch of thought; and to call it conventional is little more than a polite bow of acknowledgement to the graceful preface in which he passes it off as merely another continuation of the world chronicle stretching from the Old Testament through Eusebius and Jerome to Sigebert of Gembloux and Hugh of Saint-Victor in his own age.

Full text
Abstract:
Tree height and number of western gall rust (caused by Endocronartiumharknessii (J.P. Moore) Hirat.) bole and branch infections per living tree were recorded in three experimental 7-year-old lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta Dougl. ex Loud.) plantations located near Fort St. James, Mackenzie, and Fort St. John, B.C. An extra set of data for trees originating from north of 60°N was also taken at Fort St. John. Each plantation consisted of 40 types of genetic material (i.e., different parentage and latitude of origin), while the extra set at Fort St. John consisted of 17 types of genetic material. The 4357 trees examined had an average of 1.81 gall rust infections per tree, and 49.1% of all trees were infected. Ninety percent of all infections originated in a single year (1990). The number of galls per unit target area declined with increasing height above ground. The percentage of galls located on the bole was 3.10, 10.53, 8.03, and 9.88% for the four populations, respectively. The number of western gall rust infections per tree was linearly related to tree height. The number of infections on boles did not vary with tree height, but the proportion of all infections located on the bole was linearly related to the reciprocal of tree height. The proportion of infections on the bole did not vary significantly with infection severity. Finally, the proportion of galls on the bole did not differ significantly between types of genetic material.

Abstract:
The various interpretations of John 15:1-3 point to errors in the method of interpretation. Of course, Jesus only had one purpose. This research aims to find the meaning of the true teachings of Jesus that will lead every believer to the true Christian life, so that the wrong meaning, which confuses Christian to Understand the teachings of Jesus, can be anticipated. This study uses a hermeneutic research method that specifically exegesis to the discussion texts. This research examines the context of Jesus in the Gospel of John as a whole; the Old Testament context relating to John 15:1-3; and reviews in general, the context of the chapters around John 15:1-3 and concludes based on these steps. John 15:1, explains Jesus' statement as Yahweh and the statement of Jesus as the embodiment of Israel. John 15:2a describes “the cut branches” referring to all Israelites who rejected Jesus. Meanwhile "the cleansed branches" (15:2b) refers to Jesus' disciples and all the Israelites who believed in Him. The statement in John 15:3 is a statement that Jesus' disciples were in a state of cleanness. For the first recipients of John's Gospel, these verses meant believing Jews were "a branch bearing fruit" and "cleansed" whereas unbelieving Jews were "a cut branch."Penafsiran yang beragam atas Yohanes 15:1-3 menunjukkan kesalahan metode penafsiran. Tentu saja Yesus hanya mempunyai satu maksud.

Abstract:
Since the first publication of the nickname Pistoxenos Painter, like identity of an artist whose hands had originated attic vase-paintings, a new classification of the series of vases and fragments was developed. This classification is still recognized like more precise than all other existing chronology or typologies. Almost all the specialists in Ancient Greek ceramology and iconography understood that while the denomination was a modern invention, the anonymous painter determined was a discovery. The author of this and hundreds of other attributions, the English Hellenist John D. Beazley (1885-1970), was doubtlessly the most important well-know connoisseur of all the History, what can be judged by the encyclopedic extension of his lists of painters and by the almost universal acceptance of his method of attribution\'s results. Criticisms and revisions of this method - initiated in XIX century, with the studies of Giovanni Morelli, an Italian doctor and connoisseur - are dated already of the first decades of XX century, but their development was discontinuous and discredited. A current interpretation of the revisionism considers it like an error and ignorance of the techniques developed by Morelli. The principal characteristic of the attacks against attributions of Beazley is perhaps the lack of importance given to the recognition of the vascular painters. Either by the proximity with the metal\'s art, or by the place that the pottery artists occupied in the Athenian society, chiefly between the end of the Persian wars and the political ascension of Perikles. This thesis proposes to considerate the problem of the method of attribution from only one painter\'s workmanship, chosen among the least published and not extensively justified (the only monograph dedicated to the Pistoxenos Painter was published in the years 1950). The stylistic divergence between the white-grounds and the red-figures of the Pistoxenos Painter, and the fragmentary conservation of the majority of his works had also collaborated for the decision to revise this particular series of attributions.

Abstract:
The increase of trading has created many environmental, ecological, social and ethical problems. The main concern across all industries is to create more sustainable, eco-friendly and ethical manufacturing processes. Only by influence consumer's purchasing behavior there might be the demand for eco-green products. The fashion and textile industry as one of the main contributor to the world's economy is one of the main environmental polluter (e.g.: soil, lakes, river and air). Recently, many young fashion designers started to offer eco-green fashion to the market. This new phenomenon might change the course of the world fashion industry. The goal of this research is to find out the real demand for eco-green products and its impacts on the traditional methods of fashion manufacturing. Three geographical areas where chosen to represent consumption side (US and EU (UK)) and manufacturing side (China). The specific fashion garment was chosen to demonstrate detailed analysis of the manufacturing processes and its new eco-green formula -- the denim jeans. The primary and secondary research approaches were chosen to cover the whole industrial view on this phenomenon. The outcome of the research showed that the major impact was on the general consumer's purchasing behavior and their life style. It is a new trend and concept that is reshaping the traditional fashion business models. Denim jeans industry leaders such as Levi's Strauss are in process of implementing eco-green, ethical and fair-trade factors into their long-term strategy.

Dinis, Martim João Duarte. "Repressão e sexualidade - tela branca." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/40998.

Abstract:
This project aims to investigate the creative process of painting from something intimate: the repression and sexuality in my childhood and adolescence. We are today in a society that has made great strides in the legal realm and a substantial transformation of mentalities, nevertheless it is still governed by patriarchal and heteronormative views. In our society, identity still needs to be built. The first chapter, entitled "Repression and Homosexual Identity," draws on authors such as Foucault and Butler to understand current thinking about sexuality and identity outside heteronormative patterns, and to analyze the work of some queer artists since the nineteenth century. The second chapter, entitled "The White Canvas: The Creative Act", calls on authors such as Baudelaire, Berger, Deleuze, Hockney, and Kandinsky to explore the relationship that is established with the empty space - the white canvas - by clarifying the movements that precede the physical creative process, the discussion about the validity of painting, the multiplicity and accessibility of existing images, as well as a historical reflection on the artistic language of painting. From this reflection there is the need to develop the artistic project of repression and sexuality to the visual plane, contemplating the reflection on concepts such as the notion of "beauty" of Baudelaire, the need for "emptying" of Deleuze, the validity of painting after the appearance of photography, the multiplicity and accessibility of existing images. After this awareness of the power of the image, the third chapter investigates visual artists that relate to the theme and the use of a personal archive, such as Richter, Tuymans, Dumas, Bacon and Hockney, in order to build a new reality. This through the medium of painting, which simultaneously reveal and omit (the visible and the invisible) images of events and bodily sensations. Thus, the works created seek to explore the affective links with memory, rituals and institutions attended. In parallel, the artistic project integrates the conceptual and aesthetic concerns, raised in the analysis of so many authors, to execute on the "white canvas" personal moments, in a series that I call "Atonement".

POLÁČEK, Martin. "Eucharistie v Janově evangeliu." Master's thesis, 2007. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-48000.

Full text
Abstract:
The presented work deals with the conception of the Eucharist in the Gospel of John. The first chapter is dedicated to terms of the Eucharist, the Last Supper and the Lord{\crq}s Supper and also to the existing division of possible approaches to the sacramentality in the Gospel of John. In the subsequent chapters it deals in detail with five places of the Gospel of John, that are mostly mentioned in connection with the Eucharist. It is the wedding at Cana (2,1-11), the eucharistic section (6,51-58), washing of the feet of disciples (13,1-20), the Vine and the Branches (15,1-17), opening of the side of Jesus (19,34). The work tries to solve the topic (question) in the context as wide as possible including the question of the johannine sources of inspiration. In this way it can be seen the mutual correspondence of these varios places and the deep theological conception of the hole Gospel. The replacement of the institution of the Eucharist in the thirteenth chapter with the washing of the feet and it{\crq}s displacement to {\clqq}the bread of life discourse`` in the sixth chapter is due to the proper evangelist{\crq}s intention. There was an impending danger, that the Eucharist became a magical medicine without any relation to the incarnation and the sacrifitial death of Jesus. These facts have theirs own consequences for the life of the christian community. So the subject of the sacraments has been subordinated to the christological accent.

David Autor, David Dorn, Lawrence F. This chapter presents a new data set of more than two hundred executive orders never signed by the president. However that is interpreted — as good management or as gridlock — something that could have been done “with the stroke of a pen” was not. Here, too, quantitative and archival analysis pair to help us understand why. The results highlight the fact that unilateral action has costs, which at some point outweigh the benefits. Those costs may be rung up in Congress, or the courts, or by public opinion. But as the exploration here shows, they may also be imposed by the executive branch.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides an overview of the methodological tradition that Classical Liberal economists embraced, which interpreted the science of economics narrowly and created a firewall between scientific pursuits and policy endeavors. This tradition is best found in the policy methodology of Classical Liberals such as John Stuart Mill and his followers. That methodology recognized the messiness of policy compared to the elegance of the theory underlying science. To deal with that messiness, the policy methodology needed a branch of economics that was free of scientific certainty. One way to handle that problem would be to accept that no part of economics was a science. The second way was to divide economics into different branches: a scientific branch concerned with agreed-upon empirical facts and logical implications of assumptions, in which normative values played as minimal a role as possible; and a policy branch in which values were seen as essential elements of the analysis.

Abstract:
The late story ‘Thor Bridge’ opens with a celebrated passage in which Watson reveals the existence of ‘a travel-worn and battered tin dispatch-box with my name, John H. Watson, MD, Late Indian Army, painted upon the lid’ (Case-Book, 23) in the vaults of the Charing Cross branch of Cox and Co. bank. This was a real bank, founded in 1758 and which specialised as an army agency, responsible for army logistics and payments to officers and men: for its military customers it would have taken care not only of salaries but also of tax, insurance and bills, and it had branches across British India as well as the British Isles. For a former Indian Army doctor, therefore, it would have been a logical choice for placing an account, and its branch at 16–18 Charing Cross was, during the First World War, one of the busiest banks in the world, open all hours for men returning from the front.1 Its wartime expansion could not be sustained and it was taken over by Lloyd’s Bank in 1923, the year after ‘Thor Bridge’ was published in the Strand, although Lloyd’s later sold its Indian operations which eventually became Cox and Kings travel agent, and which flourishes to this day.

Abstract:
Pipeline repairs at large water depths represent challenges for both for mechanical repair systems and for welding systems. This paper presents the main results from a Joint Industry Project (JIP) launched in late 2005 that was focused on the following main topics: • Revision of the Recommended Practice for “Mechanical pipeline couplings” [2] in order to include requirements for clamp repairs, hot-tapping and the pipeline’s response to isolation plug forces. • Methods to qualify remotely operated subsea hyperbaric welding in a dry habitat without performing NDT. At present such welding technology is being developed to join pipelines though the use of a sleeve and two fillet welds, and for the seal welds of hot-tapping pipeline branches.

Abstract:
Vertebral arteries are a system of two blood vessels through which blood is carried to the rear region of the brain. This region of the human body has to be very well supplied with blood, without any breaks or deficiencies in the blood flow. Blood is delivered to the brain through carotid arteries as well. All these arteries are connected to the circle of Willis, which has to fulfill all demands of the human brain as far as the blood flow is concerned. However, vertebral arteries due to their position and shape are a special kind of blood vessels. They originate at various distances from the aortic ostium, may branch off at different angles, have various length, inner diameter and spatial shape. Three different geometries of vertebral arteries, which most frequently occur in the human body structure, have been chosen, and for each twenty five various combinations of artery inner diameters have been used to generate 3D models of these arteries. For seventy five different models thus created, the numerical simulations have been performed. The results obtained have indicated explicitly that differences in the flow and instantaneous velocity values in vertebral arteries and in the point they join to form the basilar artery do not result from pathological changes in the artery system, but may follow from physical phenomena that occur in arteries as a consequence of the pulsating character of the flow and the unique geometry, which is related to the individual human anatomical structure.

Abstract:
Abstract Methane emissions are classed as one of the most important contributors to climate change. This greenhouse gas has a global warming potential 21 times that of Carbon Dioxide. In the Oil and Gas industry, pipeline compressor emissions have been identified as an important source of methane released into the atmosphere. Wet seals (oil seals) technology will not meet new targets being set for methane emissions. John Crane has therefore developed a new dry gas seal design with a significantly narrower cross section to allow historically high value compressor assets to continue to function without the need for extensive redesign or replacement. This dry gas seal has been specifically engineered to replace wet seals within older centrifugal pipeline compressors. The main reasons associated with conversion from wet seals to dry gas seals include: moving to non-contacting technology which reduces seal wear issues, reduced operating costs from removal of oil seal supporting systems including degassing equipment, lower energy consumption due to the shear losses associated with oil seals, reduced maintenance costs by having a simpler supporting system and less frequent routine maintenance, and reduced emissions. Wet seals are typically compact in nature and are therefore very flexible in how they can be installed into a compressor. Traditional dry gas seals occupy a larger cross-sectional footprint and therefore it was necessary to develop a brand new gas seal that can retrofit into the same cavity without the need for expensive and prohibitive machining of the compressor shaft or housing. The resulting gas seal design is significantly compact when compared to a standard gas seal, yet provides sealing at maximum pipeline compressor duties of up to 120barg and 100m/s. In order to create a compact seal, John Crane has significantly reduced the cross section of the rotating (mating) and stationary (primary) sealing faces. This change brings about an increased level of complexity associated with dry gas seal design. In-house FEA and CFD simulations have been used to optimize the seal design and groove patterns. Results documenting the extensive design and simulation activities will be presented to demonstrate effective separation of the sealing faces throughout the entire seal performance envelope. A number of tests were specifically designed to thoroughly validate the seal design by simulating compressor field conditions. The product has undergone a series of testing through its entire performance envelope for pressure, speed and temperature. Specific accelerated tests were also designed to replicate the seal lifetime. The paper will describe the test setup and present the validation results.
