Abstract:

This thesis provides modern transcriptions for horn of twenty-six two- and three-voiced canons by Johann Walter, thereby adding to the literature available from the sixteenth century for that instrument. This project specifically attempts to introduce the high school and college student hornist to modal music in strict fugal form; the transcriptions appear as an appendix. The topics discussed in the body of this thesis include the canon, Johann Walter's life and significant contributions, sixteenth-century instrumental music, musicians' guilds, the zink, and the horn. This work is not intended to offer a comprehensive history of any of these areas, but to aid the teacher and student in the preparation and performance of these transcriptions.

Resumo: A presente pesquisa parte do interesse de Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) em redor do problema da origem e da essência espiritual da linguagem no período de sua juventude. Em 1916, Benjamin escreve o ensaio 'Sobre a linguagem em geral e sobre a linguagem humana', fonte principal deste estudo. Mostraremos que, uma referência de crucial importância para a compreensão desse controvertido ensaio, é a figura do escritor préromântico Johann Georg Hamann (1730-1788). A menção benjaminiana de Hamann opera, neste sentido, como ponto de apoio provocador e imprescindível para nossa análise. Em seus próprios contextos históricos, Benjamin e Hamann, fazem uma forte crítica aos conceitos de conhecimento e de experiência sustentados pela Aufkliirung e condensados por Kant. Na crítica dirigida por Benjamin e Hamann ao primado do fenômeno processual kantiano, tomam relevância as 'Idéias das Teologia' e a 'experiência mágica da Revelação', formando parte de um percurso extremamente provocador para a Füosofia Contemporânea. A abordagem benjaminiana da linguagem, em confluência explícita e implícita com Hamann, possibilita o desenvolvimento do presente estudo filosófico de ambos autores. Porém, para uma melhor compreensão do ensaio benjaminiano Sobre a linguagem, levaremos especialmente em conta dois textos bamannianos citados por Benjamin: 'Estética in nuce. Rapsódia em prosa cabalística' (1762) e 'O cavalheiro rosacruz, última opinião sobre a origem divina e humana da linguagem' (1772)

Abstract:

Weit vor den Faust-Opern der romantischen Ära schrieb Johann Ignaz Walter seine Oper "Fausts Wanderungen und Höllenfahrt". Kann dieses Werk, später unter neuem Titel überarbeitet, als "erste Faust-Oper" gelten? Diese Arbeit erschließt vorhandene Quellen zu Walters Leben und seinem Opernwerk. Der Waltersche Faust wird inhaltlich und überlieferungsgeschichtlich vorgestellt. So ergibt sich eine Perspektive auf ein Opernwerk, das eine durchaus lohnende Wiederentdeckung für das heutige Opernrepertoire darstellt.

Abstract:

John Macrone (1809-1837) was a Scotsman who arrived in London around 1830 and became a publisher, in partnership with James Cochrane between January 1833 and August 1834, and independently between October 1834 and his death in September 1837. A friend of Dickens and Thackeray, he published Sketches by Boz and, posthumously, The Paris Sketch Book. One of his other projects was a life of Scott, which he began to write soon after the death of the novelist; but his book, chiefly remembered because Hogg wrote his Anecdotes of Scott for inclusion in it, fell under the displeasure of Lockhart, and was cancelled shortly before it was to have been published. A fragmentary manuscript, however, was recently discovered by the author of this thesis and has now been edited for the first time, together with a biographical study of Macrone, in which extensive use is made of previously unpublished and uncollected material.

Abstract:

This thesis begins by situating the work of Walter Benjamin in its historical complexity and examining the conceptual underpinnings of his phantasmagoria. Benjamin's Arcades Project is considered in light of his attempts to resituate primary structuring dichotomies in a fluid and dynamic configuration. These dichotomies include the political and the apolitical, the material and the immaterial, and the past and the present. The phantasmagoria-as-metaphor is then employed as a methodological framework for analyzing the ever-circulating images of John F. Kennedy.
This thesis is primarily concerned with the conceptual tools necessary to argue that an image is more "real" than its real-life counterpart, that is, real enough to carry resonances that extend beyond both its diminutive "artifice", and its original context. The relations between the immaterial image and its material referent are discussed as complementary and shifting, rather than oppositional and static. This thesis explores the possible and the actual convergence of the image and its material counterparts.

Abstract:

Although Walter Benjamin argues printed materials are without traditional art authority or aura, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg’s work exists in the tradition of high art despite their use of mass-produced materials. Johns and Rauschenberg rely on the distracted attention of the viewer in the age of reproduction to engender reassessment of materials in their works. They use objects that contribute to the new distracted audience but create works that force the viewer toward intense contemplation; their works also combat trends Benjamin identifies to stake their claim as artists of original works while remaining relevant to the modern era. Johns merges print, mechanized reproduction, painting, and sculpture to subvert and reaffirm his place as the artist of an auratic object. Rauschenberg employs ready-mades, painting, printed materials, and sculpture in hybrid art works that unite mechanization with human facture to renegotiate and expose the overstimulation of reproduced objects within society.

Abstract:

Le critical pronouncing dictionary de john walker devrait etre considere comme un monument de l'etude de la prononciation au xviiie siecle. Si on admet bien volontiers l'influence qu'a eu l'ouvrage au xviiie siecle, sur la standardisation de l'anglais oral, on connait tres peu la maniere dont cette influence s'est exercee, ainsi que son etendue. L'objet de cette etude est de montrer de quelle maniere, un ex, acteur et autodidacte a reussi a imposer ses idees dans le domaine de la prononciation, tant sur le plan de la langue, que sur les plans methodologique et pedagogique - et ce, pendant plus d'un siecle - au point de devenir une reference incontournable pour l'anglais oral
John walker's critical pronouncing dictionary should be considered as a masterpiece in the study of pronunciation in the 18th century. If the influence this book had on the standardization of spoken english, is generally acknowledged, the way its influence operated as well as its extent, are little if hardly known. The object of the present study is to show how an ex-actor, who was also a self-made philologist, managed to impose his ideas on pronunciation studies, whether on the linguistic as well as methodological and educational levels, for over a century, so as to become the ultimate reference for spoken english
