Abstract:

Heinrich Andreas Cuntzius, Orgelbauer in Halle, forderte in einer Stellungnahme vor dem preußischen Gericht in Berlin den Schutz vor ausländischer Konkurrenz (von Sachsen und Anhalt). Diese Aussage wurde durch einem Zeugnis vom 12. Januar 1748 von Johann Sebastian Bach ergänzt, das die Qualität der Handwerkskunst von Cuntzius als so gut bestätigt, dass kein möglicher Fehler daran gefunden werden könne; nichts sei wünschenswerter, als dass all solche Arbeiten so geschickt ausgeführt würden. Abstract:

ABSTRACTThe Characteres Generum Plantarum of Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster was the principal printed botanical work emanating from James Cook's second voyage of 1772–1775. The printing most frequently encountered is a 31.2 cm quarto dated 1776 that was probably run off in several hundred copies. A single 1775 quarto was recently discovered. Also produced was a well-known but very rare 47.5 cm folio. In this first-ever census of folio copies, two dated 1775 and 14 dated 1776 are verified; their locations, descriptions, and provenances are detailed herein.

Abstract:

Abstract This paper presents a transcription of a handwritten Latin text, along with its translation into English, that was identified only very recently in the Kongelige Bibliothek in Copenhagen while preparing the new critical edition of Kant’s Nova dilucidatio (PND). The text consists of remarks by Johann Reinhold Grube, composed in his role as opponent at Kant’s disputation for the venia legendi on 27 September 1755. Grube’s interleaved opposing remarks on Kant’s dissertatio metaphysica pro receptione contain precious starting points for new lines of research, since they vividly exemplify the point of view of one of the participants in the debate, a perspective that is rarely documented. In addition to informing us about how the disputation itself was carried out and which traditional rhetorical techniques were used, these remarks offer a compelling glimpse into the immediate reception of Kant’s first thoughts on logic and metaphysics, giving scholars access to an ingenious reaction to Kant’s stance on the theory of judgment.

ABSTRACTThe emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is an iconic Antarctic species. George Robert Gray attributed the first description to Johann Reinhold Forster during James Cook's voyage of 1772–1775, attribution that persists to this day. Gray therefore honoured Forster in the emperor's scientific name—but he was almost certainly mistaken. Thaddeus von Bellingshausen in 1820 was probably the true first observer. Charles Wilkes in 1840 was next. James Clark Ross in 1841 made important observations and brought specimens home to the British Museum. Edward Wilson and others, in 1902–1903 and 1911 on the two expeditions of Robert F. Scott, discovered and investigated the first breeding colony, substantially advancing knowledge about this remarkable creature.

Abstract Die Arbeit verdeutlicht und erschließt das Verfahren wissenschaftlicher Entdeckungen im 18. Jahrhundert am Beispiel von Johann Reinhold Forster, Vater des Abgeordneten der Mainzer Republik. Georg. Johann Reinold (1729–1798) wurde in Dirschau (heute Tczew) an der Weichsel geboren. Der Vater war Bürgermeister dieser Stadt, die damals wie heute zu Polen gehörte, aber 1772 von Preußen annektiert wurde. Der Sohn studierte Theologie in Halle und wurde Pfarrer, nahm aber 1765 einen Auftrag Katharinas II. an, über die Wolgakolonien zu berichten. Da sein Bericht kritisch ausfiel, erhielt er in Petersburg kein Honorar, und da er seine Pfarrstelle durch die Abwesenheit verloren hatte, ging er 1766 nach England. Er lehrte an der Dissenters Academy in Warrington Naturgeschichte und wurde für sein Buch über die Natur der Wolgaregion zum Fellow der Royal Society gewählt. 1772 bestimmte man ihn als offiziellen Naturforscher für die 2. Weltreise Cooks mit Georg als Gehilfen. Nach der Rückkehr stritten sich Cook und Forster über die Rechte an der Edition, der Auftrag zur Publikation wurde ihm entzogen und die Admiralität verbot ihm den Druck. Johann Reinold brachte die Schriften auf eigene Kosten unter dem Namen seines Sohnes heraus, aber ,,Das auf Patronage basierende Wissenschaftssystem verzieh diesen Fauxpas nicht …“ (S. 36) und die Auflage wurde boykottiert. Deutsche Freimaurer (Friedrich II., Herzog Ferdinand von Braunschweig und andere) zahlten die Schulden, so dass Forster 1779 zum Professor für Naturgeschichte und Mineralogie in Halle berufen werden konnte.

Buxtehude, J. P. Kellner, J. L. Krebs, P. Locatelli, J. G. Walther und anderen Komponisten. Sie gehen auf den Kantor Johann Nicolaus Mempell (1713-1747) in Apolda zurück, der möglicherweise ein Schüler von J. P. Kellner war. Johann Gottlieb Preller aus Oberroßla bei Apolda (1727-1786, ab 1753 Kantor und Organist in Dortmund) und vielleicht ein Schüler von J. N. Mempell und J. T. Krebs senior, kombinierte diese Gruppe von Handschriften mit Kopien, die er in den Jahren 1743 bis 1749 selbst angefertigt hatte. Vilnius University This article discusses the contribution to the studies of the ‘Eastern’ and ‘Southern’ lands in the 18th century by naturalist, travel writer, and ethnologist George Forster, who had accompanied his father, Johann Reinhold Forster, on Captain James Cook’s expedition of 1772–5 to circumnavigate the globe and who was a professor of natural history at Vilnius University from 1784 to 1787. The paper presents the background of European long-distance navigation, examines Forster’s contribution to Cook’s second voyage, and reconsiders his work completed at the Vilnian Academy against the broader perspective of the European notions of travel literature and ethnography of the Pacific region, as well as the prospect of Oriental studies, gradually emerging as an academic field in Western Europe and, later on, in Vilnius.

Abstract:

Buffon added 14 notes contributed by one or both of the Forsters to the sixth supplement of the Histoire Naturelle published in Paris in 1782. All these additions deal with mammals, mainly South African: nine South African antelopes, the spring hare, tame sheep and three antelopes not found at the Cape of Good Hope. The descriptions are compared with the drawings by George Forster in the British Museum (Natural History) and with the Descriptiones Animalium written by J. R. Forster about 1775, but not published until 1844. Buffon included two plates engraved after drawings made by George Forster depicting the klipspringer and spring hare.

Abstract:

The texts concerned, all in the hand of Johann Reinhold Forster (1729–1798) and hitherto unremarked, have recently been transcribed and translated from the original Latin and have been made freely available on the website of the Linnean Society of London. Together they touch on many aspects of Forster's life and work, comprising a catalogue of North American animals, a fragmentary list of birds from the same area, “Description of 36 animals found during Capt. Cook's 2nd voyage … 1772–75”, a list of insects (British and North American), and a letter to Linnaeus on botanical matters which includes a description of Forstera sedifolia. Together they confirm Forster's impressive range of expertise, both as a naturalist and a linguist, and add weight to the movement that has in recent years sought to re-establish him in his rightful place as a major figure in eighteenth-century natural history.

✓ Although the recurrent artery of Heubner is one of the best known cerebral arteries, little has been written in the neurosurgical or anatomical literature about its discovery. The artery is of primary importance to cerebrovascular surgeons, who identify it during clipping of anterior communicating artery aneurysms. Johann Otto Leonhardt Heubner (1843–1926), who described this artery in 1872, is better known as the father of German pediatrics. He was appointed to the first professorship in Germany exclusively devoted to pediatrics at the Charité Children's Clinic of Berlin University. Although he initially studied internal medicine in Leipzig under Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich and Ernst Leberecht Wagner, his early research involved anatomical studies of the circulation of the brain, from which he described syphilitic endarteritis (Heubner's disease). Finding morphological studies inconclusive, he turned to more physiological experiments. Together with the physiologist Max Rubner, Heubner performed important studies on energy metabolism in infancy, creating the notion of the nutrition quotient. In this article the authors review Heubner's life and scientific discoveries.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTWhen Beethoven praised Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, he emphasized the multitude of musical styles and genres to be found in the opera, ranging from folk tunes to arias to hymn-like textures. The most extraordinary stylistic and generic allusions occur during the ‘Song of the Armoured Men’ in Act 2. This movement owes its extraordinary character to a ‘baroque’ accompaniment and a Lutheran-hymn quotation, the source and meaning of which continue to be discussed in Mozart research. While scholars have often suggested that Mozart took the hymn melody from Johann Philipp Kirnberger's Die Kunst des reinen Satzes in der Musik (where it is quoted without its text), Reinhold Hammerstein argues that because the composer also appears to have known the hymn's text, he must have encountered the melody elsewhere. This article, based on a study of Mozart's sketches for Die Zauberflöte and a close reading of Kirnberger's writings, supports the thesis that Mozart borrowed the hymn melody – and significant details of his setting of it in the ‘Song of the Armoured Men’ – from Die Kunst des reinen Satzes in der Musik.

Az 1752 és 1814 között élt Ernst Albrecht rendhagyó és kalandos életviteléről, sokoldalúságáról és rendkívüli termékenységéről elhíresedett személyiség volt: orvosként, drámaíróként és színházigazgatóként, valamint könyvkiadóként is számontartja a szakirodalom. Altonában született, s az itten alapiskoláztatás után 1769–1772 között orvosi tanulmányokat az erfurti egyetemen, a jónevű Johann Wilhelm Bauer professzor mellett folytatott, aki szállásadója is volt, majd később az apósa is, hiszen az ő tizennégy esztendős lányát vette feleségül. A végzés utánpróbált egziszt enciát teremteni orvosi és orvostörténeti előadások tartásával. Bár első irodalmi művét, a Der unnatürliche Vatert (A természetellenes apa) című három felvonásos szomorú játékot már 1776-ban megírta, egy ideig felhagyni látszott az irodalmi tevékenységgel. 1776-ban feleségével együtt Észtországba költözött, ahol Karl Reinhold Manteuffel gróf magánorvosa lett. Életrajzírói szerint a főúr szolgálata alkalmat adott arra, hogy nagy utazások keretében Oroszországot is megismerje. Az 1780-as erfurti visszatérésük után bontakozott ki irodalmi tevékenysége, amely erős ösztönzést kapott az 1782-ben egy színházi csoporthoz csatlakozó feleségétől is, hiszen az így vállalt vándorélet során kapcsolatba kerülhetett a szellemi élet több fontos személyiségével, például Friedrich Schillerrel. Szerzőnk nem csupán a francia felvilágosodás nagyjainak lett lelkes olvasója (Rousseau-tól le is fordított bizonyos szövegeket), hanem a francia forradalomnak is, s publicisztikai írásaiban hangot adott az Amerika függetlenségéért harcba szállók melletti elkötelezettségének is.

RESUMO: Fruto de longa maturação filosófica desde a sua estada em Jena, e instado a isso pelas influências de Karl L. Reinhold e Johann G. Fichte, o poeta Novalis produz, a partir do outono de 1795, um conjunto de anotações fragmentárias sobre a filosofia de Fichte, hoje conhecidas como Fichte-Studien. De entre os importantes temas aí abordados, um revela-se particularmente interessante: o tema do estatuto da Filosofia no seio do problema da autocompreensão do Eu -, e mais concretamente, o necessário pensar da filosofia sobre si própria, as alterações que no processo têm de sobrevir à própria filosofia e a repercussão disto na compreensão de si próprio do Eu. Nesta senda, o seguinte ensaio propõe-se mostrar como, para Novalis, a filosofia é o natural pensar do homem, e como para além disto é a própria filosofia, com o decorrer do seu pensamento sobre si própria, que molda o curso da compreensão de si próprio do Eu: quer tendo com o Eu uma origem comum, nascendo com ele, lançando-o para o mundo e cindindo a união originária em que ele de outro modo sempre estaria, quer, por fim, afirmando-se como carência deste, ou como algo por que o Eu e a própria filosofia têm de passar no seu curso, para que possam experienciar a perda, e almejar à recuperação dessa origem.

Die Reinhard Keiser zugeschriebene 'Markuspassion' ist durch die Aufführungen Johann Sebastian Bachs während seiner Weimarer Jahre und in seiner Leipziger Zeit gut bekannt. Trotz einer vor wenigen Jahren entdeckten handschriftlichen Quelle dieser Passion sind wichtige Fragen bislang unbeantwortet geblieben. Wir kennen nicht die Form des Werkes, die Bach für seine erste Fassung vorlag, und können deshalb nicht mit Sicherheit sagen, welche Sätze bereits vorhanden waren und welche er selbst hinzufügte. Bachs Weimarer Aufführungsstimmen lassen vermuten, dass bestimmte Sätze tatsächlich erst beim Ausschreiben eingefügt wurden, was bedeuten könnte, dass Bach selbst sie komponierte. AbstractIn this essay I argue that Kant remained committed to the necessity and fundamental importance of education throughout his career. Like Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724–90), Kant holds that a ‘total transformation’ of schools is necessary, and he holds this view not only in the 1770s but in his later years as well. In building my case I try to refute two recent opposing interpretations – Reinhard Brandt’s position that Kant’s early ‘education enthusiasm’ was later replaced by a politics enthusiasm, and Manfred Kuehn’s view that the increasing importance of autonomy in Kant’s mature ethics leads him to de-emphasize education.

Abstract:

The paper deals with re-education as one of the hidden symbols of modernity using the example of National Socialist nationality politics. It analyses a theoretical concept behind the National Socialist ethnic and racial policy in East Central Europe, especially in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. It presents the concept of Umvolkung as a theoretical basis on which it was possible to think of a significant part of the Czech population that met the racist criteria of the National Socialists, that it was originally the German population who lost its national identity during the centuries. The concept should also help to develop a strategy to re-educate the people of the Protectorate, and in the long run it should eventually lead to ethnocide, i. e. to disintegrate or directly destroy the Czech collective national identity. One of the key figures in shaping the concept was the young Nazi scholar Hans Joachim Beyer (1908–1971), who came to the Protectorate on the advice of the Deputy Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich and headed the most politically influenced Science Foundation in Czech Lands (Reinhard Heydrich Foundation for Scientific Research in Prague). In order to justify the future National Socialist Germanization policy, Beyer developed a new theory of the origins of the Czech people in collaboration with the anthropologist K. V. Müller.

Is it useful to write history on everyday musical life? And how can we do it? This article introduces a historiographical concept initiated by historians such as Carlo Ginzburg, Alf L?dtke and Richard van D?lmen already in the 1970s, in an attempt to renew the writing of history. Instead of the reconstruction and interpretation of grand narratives and deep structures in society, economy and culture, these historians offer close descriptions of ?average citizens? with their daily musical routines, motivations and preferences, and the result is oft en a cluster of fascinating and wide-ranging insights into different forms of contact with music. Following this general approach, I hope to offer a panorama of everyday musical culture in Hamburg in the early eighteenth century. The sources used for this study include different musical genres such as opera, cantata and instrumental ?table music?, as well as books, newspaper reports, subscription lists, diaries, behavioural guides and archival documents. This material permits insights into the uses made of musicians such as Johann Mattheson, Georg Philipp Telemann and Reinhard Keiser, as well as into the social lives of the Hamburg citizenship.

AbstractThe Protestant church, for Reinhard Hütter, relinquished its ecclesial public character when it turned from ‘binding doctrine’ as the means for establishing and maintaining its concrete ‘time-space’. Christendom disguised this basic theological flaw, but with its collapse the public basis of the Protestant church fell away. This reduced the church's witness and destroyed its communal structure. His positive proposal re-establishes the church as a public by reference to the communion nature of God, and to church practices as mediate forms of the Spirit's acting. Hütter's account shadows an argument made fifty years before by Johannes C. Hoekendijk, observing an intensified focus on word and sacrament and the promotion of a culture as a solution to the problem of the church's witness. Yet, for Hoekendijk, this logic exemplifies the problem. The institutions of the church come to bear the full evangelistic load. Mission replicates the basic structures of a particular way of life as a necessary precursor to the gospel. The act of witness becomes propaganda because of an insufficient doctrine of the church. This insufficiency is a failing in the doctrine of the Trinity: God's own life is defined without sufficient attention to his act of reconciliation and redemption as itself material to understanding the nature of hisin selife.

Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre hat sich für die Musik von Manfred Trojahn, Wolfgang Rihm, Reinhard Febel, Hans-Jürgen von Bose, Wolfgang von Schweinitz und Detlev Müller-Siemens die Bezeichnung "Neue Einfachheit" als typologischer und historiographischer Terminus durchgesetzt. Durch die gemeinsamen Lehrer György Ligeti und Klaus Huber entwickelten die untereinander vielfach befreundeten Komponisten eine Art Gegenschule zur Darmstädter Schule. Im engeren Sinne schulbildend wirkten sie jedoch erst seit den 1980er Jahren als Lehrer der heute dreißig- bis vierzigjährigen Komponisten. Anhand der Musik von Matthias Pintscher wird die Frage diskutiert, inwiefern es sich bei der Musik dieser jüngeren Generation um eine Reformulierung von Ansätzen ihrer Lehrer aus den 1970er Jahren handelt. Ihr Verhältnis zur Musik der Tradition, insbesondere zu Gustav Mahler, zu tonalen Formen und musiksprachlichen Gesten, zu Hans Werner Henze und Helmut Lachenmann, sowie ihre Ablehnung der seriellen und postseriellen Avantgarde legt dies nahe. Angesprochen ist auch die Musik von Rebecca Saunders, Jörg Widmann, Johannes Maria Staud und anderen. Die exemplarische Erörterung des Begriffs einer "Zweiten Neuen Einfachheit" anhand von Pintschers "Fünf Orchesterstücken" (1997) versteht sich als ein erstes Diskussionsangebot über und mit dieser jüngeren Komponistengeneration.

The knowledge of Dexiinae and Tachinidae diversity in the Neotropical Region, in contrast to other regions, e.g., the Palaearctic Region, is in a poor condition. The history of these taxa has gradually increased since the 18th Century from the works of European and North American authors such as Johan C. Fabricius, Christian R.W. Wiedemann, Jean B. Robineau-Desvoidy, Pierre J.-M. Macquart, Jacques M.F. Bigot, Francis Walker, Victor von Röeder, Ermanno Giglio-Tos, Friedrich M. Brauer and Julius E. Bergenstamm, Frederik M. van der Wulp, Charles H. Curran, John M. Aldrich, Charles H.T. Townsend, Henry J. Reinhard and William R. Thompson. It was only in the first half of the 20th Century that scientists born or established in South America began to enter tachinidology. Dipterists like Jean Brèthes and Everardo E. Blanchard from Argentina, Rául E. Cortés Peña from Chile and José H. Guimarães from Brazil, are the most memorable names for, not only to Neotropical Dexiinae, but, indeed for the whole family. Herein, a brief chronological review of tachinidology, with emphasis on Dexiinae and based on a literature review, is given. The history is divided into four periods: the pre-Linnaean period of the 16th and 17th Centuries, the 18th Century, the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century. After the first half of 20th Century, the emphasis is focused on European and North American dipterists with an overview of their contributions on Dexiinae taxonomy. Later, with presence of the South American dipterists, the emphasis is directed to them. Then a few notes are given on the Czech Dominik Bilimek, a poorly known collector from the 19th Century and Fritz Plaumann, a well-known German immigrant who collected in Brazil during the earlier 20th Century. Finally, some notes and perspectives about the 21st Century dexiinidology from the Neotropics is briefly discussed.
