Abstract:

Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with writing over 300 cantatas. Sacred cantatas comprise most of that repertory, but there are just under forty known secular cantatas composed by Bach. About half of these secular cantatas were written to celebrate a person’s birthday. This thesis will attempt to provide a view of the life of the historical figures for which the birthday cantatas were written, reflections of the personality of the individual in the cantata, Bach’s relationship to the recipient, and political or social connotations associated with the work. From a study of the individuals connected with the musical work, a more thorough understanding of the time period in which Bach lived and worked may be gained. This in turn will provide a more complete understanding of Bach’s birthday cantatas. This thesis will not address recipients of name day cantatas nor will it address recipients of birthday cantatas that were not fully preserved. Abstract:

Uppsatsen ämnar att genom en ikonologisk analys undersöka altarskulpturgruppen, belägen i S:ta Maria Magdalena kyrka i Stockholm. Det man vet om skulpturgruppen är mycket begränsat. Man vet att gruppen gavs som gåva till kyrkan 1764 av slottsdeputationen vid Stockholms slott. Skulptören är än idag okänd. Syftet är att undersöka skulpturgruppens symboliska relevans i det religiösa klimat som rådde vid tiden då den flyttades till kyrkan. Uppsatsen ämnar koppla symboliken med pietismen – en religiös rörelse som växte fram i Tyskland under 1600- och 1700-talet och spred sig till Sverige under 1700-talet. Analysen kommer att använda sig av en komparativ metod där bl.a den pietistiska ikonografin jämförs med den katolska. Uppsatsens bildmaterial utgörs, förutom skulpturgruppen, huvudsakligen av emblem och andra gravyrer men även målningar och teckningar. Det ikonologiska perspektiv som kommer att användas i uppsatsen kommer ta stöd i Michael Baxandalls bok Patterns of intention. Resultatet visar på att skulpturgruppens ikonografi delvis kan kopplas till pietismens bildspråk. Cor ardens – ett brinnande hjärta – som kyrkans högra skulptur håller i sin hand. används flitigt i pietistisk retorik och emblematik. Symboliken blir även relevant när man analyserar den ur den religiösa konflikt som kretsade kring Maria Magdalena församling mellan pietister och lutheranska ortodoxa.

Abstract:

Since the abolishment of the Apartheid-era, it is evident that the marketing generations in SA changed considerably. The increased job opportunities for Black people have important implications, by providing them with a stable income and opportunities for advancement for themselves and their children. The black upcoming middle class, as well as the low-end of the black consumer market, are contributing strongly to a rapid rise in the profits and share values of companies in the retail sectors. The four American generations at work today have unique work ethics, different perspectives on work, distinct and preferred ways of managing and being managed and idiosyncratic styles. It is therefore important to become more attuned to generational preferences in order to market and sell more successfully. An empirical research on the spending patterns of Black Africans was conducted using the Black Emerging Generations (BEG) Model as the questioning technique. The questionnaire was completed by 462 respondents, answering 48 questions in the following criteria: (1) Demographic detail, (2) Residence, (3) Clothing (4) Transport (5) Music, (6) Technology and (7) Advertising. From the literature review and the empirical research it was possible to establish the consumer behaviour of the Buppies, as well as compare their preferences and habits with the US Model. Specific conclusions and recommendations were established. Traditional sales and marketing methods will need to be re-evaluated. Stepping beyond "business as usual" takes many established businesses outside of their comfort zones; while new competitors and existing competitors are embracing their entrepreneurial spirit. The strategies formulated around targeting unique customer profiles (diversity and/or age) and implementing an integrated set of tactics required to serve those strategies, will mean the difference between those who realise their goals and those who fall short. It is evident that generational values influence consumer decisions more than the traditional demographic factors of income, education, etc. Buying- and shopping preferences, expected treatment as a customer and product information demands will vary from one generation to the next. Therefore businesses have no choice; it must understand generational influences on the marketplace and workplace, because those influences are powerful and permanent. Those who learn the values, motivations and attitudes of each generation will succeed much better than the ignorant

Abstract:

Occupational stress of nurses has been widely researched, for example in specific health care units - intensive care, specific conditions - cancer. Personal characteristics like emotional involvement and depersonalisation of patients are also suggested as stressors for nurses. In South Africa the Department of Health has made a number of changes since 1994. One of the changes involved the restructuring of the different departments to unify the fragmented health services. No comparison study was found for professional and enrolled nurses. The objectives of this study were to determine the construct validity and internal consistency of the Nursing Stress Indicator (NSI) and to identify differences between occupational stressors of professional and enrolled nurses. A cross-sectional survey design was used. An random sample of professional nurses (N = 980) and enrolled (N = 800) nurses of seven of the nine provinces of South Africa were used. The NSI was developed as measuring instrument and administrated together with a biographical questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Five internally consistent factors were extracted. The first factor was labelled Stress: Patient Care. It relates to stress because of the care nursing staff provide to patients. The second factor was labelled Stress: Job Demands, and refer to the demands associated with the work of the nurse. The third factor indicated a lack of support in the organisation as well as from supervisors and colleagues, and was labelled Stress: Lack of Support. The fourth factor was labelled Stress: Staff Issues, because it included item loadings on things like shortage of staff, and fellow workers not doing their job. The fifth factor contains items concerning working hours, especially overtime, and was labelled Stress: Overtime. The results indicated that a difference in stress levels exists between professional and enrolled nurses. Professional nurses' severity for the different stressors are higher on all five the extracted factors than those of the enrolled nurses. The sources of occupational stress for professional and enrolled nurses were almost the same. One source of stress for professional nurses that the enrolled nurses did not experience is management of staff. Professional nurses (compared with enrolled nurses) obtained practically significant higher scores on two stressors, namely stress because of making a mistake when treating a patient and stress because of disagreement with medical practitioners or colleagues concerning the treatment of a patient. Recommendations for future research were made.

Abstract:

The aim of this research was to empower Coloureds in Greenspark based on qualitative and quantitative research from a narrative approach so that they can develop their potential as leaders in the community by means of a group work leadership development programme. The thesis comprises of five Sections. SECTION A This section indicates the actuality of the research. The problem statement as well as the aim and five objectives are explained in this section. This research was undertaken within the DR & U model, namely The Developmental and Utilization model of Grinnell (1981) with a combined qualitative and quantitative research approach. This research was done from a social constructivist paradigm, and the research epistemology was qualitative by nature. The exploratory design was used as research plan. In order to note down data collection and processing systematically, video recordings were made of the group discussions. Two external evaluators as well as the group members themselves were also used to do the evaluation. The group work leadership development programme was also evaluated by the group members by means of a self-compiled questionnaire. SECTION B This section took the form of five articles in which the research findings were reported. All five articles form part of the overarching research aim and objectives and of the entire research project. However, each article is a distinctive subdivision of the entire research project, because it also functions independently - each with an own objective, own research methodology as well as a distinctive content. Section B consists of the following articles: Article 1 The objective of Article 1 was to establish the role the empowerment approach plays from the post-modern perspective in social work, by means of literature analysis. Empowerment was applied differently in different situations within the post-modern philosophy. Group work as a method of social work is a possible way in which the empowerment of individuals can be dealt with. Together with the community, the parties involved are responsible for empowering individuals. Article 2 The objective of this article was to establish the points of departure of the narrative approach by means of a literature analysis. From the literature analysis, it became clear that the narrative approach does not work with strategies, but with responsibilities, in which each individual takes responsibility for his/her own social construction, which includes his/her choices for life. Article 3 Article 3 discussed the role the narrative approach plays in group work within social work. Guidelines for dealing with empowerment within the group work process from the narrative approach were determined by means of a literature analysis. The focus was on relevant literature with specific reference to narrative theory, which included empowerment as well as the post-modern way of thinking and the description of group work. Article 4 The objective of Article 4 was to determine the role the narrative approach possibly plays in group work. The theoretical knowledge was utilised from the narrative approach in developing a group work leadership development programme. Article 5 With Article 5, the objective was to evaluate the group work development programme. This evaluation was attended to by two external consultants, as well as the group members themselves. SECTION C In Section C, the synoptic findings, conclusions and recommendations with regard to this research were discussed. The limitations of the research under review were indicated and recommendations were made with the view to use it in group work theory and in practice for training and research purposes. SECTION D Although each article and sections A and C are accompanied by an own source list, a combined source list of the entire research is given in this section. SECTION E All addendums that were referred to in the thesis are contained in this section.

Abstract:

The evolution of communication networks has led us to an era where you cannot only perform surgery halfway across the world, but do so while being in the comfort of your own home. By eliminating the need for wires, wireless networks revolutionised communication networks by enabling nodes to communicate while being in a mobile state. The concept opened many doors to new applications and possibilities. Network Coding is a technique that optimises the throughput of a network by coding packets. Geo-Routing is a routing method that operates by using the geographical distances between nodes as the routing metric. Opportunistic Routing is a routing method that exploits the broadcast characteristics of wireless networks. In this thesis, we developed a routing scheme that incorporates Network Coding, Geo- Routing and energy aware conditions. It accomplishes this task by using one of the key phases constituting Opportunistic Routing. The developed routing scheme was implemented in OMNeT++. Various simulation experiments were conducted in OMNeT++ pertaining to the implemented scheme. The results indicate significant increase in performance metrics such as throughput and survivability.
