Abstract:
The student of Swiss music history cannot but notice certain parallels in the lives of that country's finest composers – parallels that seem, at first glance, to explain why the student of Swiss music history is such a rare creature. Theodor Fröhlich (1803–1836) left Switzerland to study with Zelter in Berlin. Instead of staying to seek fame and fortune in the Prussian metropolis thereafter, he returned to his native Aarau, where he was forced to earn his keep by conducting assorted amateur choirs and ensembles. Johann Carl Eschmann (1826–1882) studied with Mendelssohn in Leipzig, began a promising career by experimenting with modernistic cyclic structures, but then relegated himself to conducting amateur choirs in darkest Canton Schaffhausen. Othmar Schoeck (1886–1957) studied in Leipzig with Reger, but he too soon returned home to tread in his forebears' footsteps. Numerous others followed the same path. It is as if the culprit were a common genetic trait, some strand of DNA that led generations of Swiss composers briefly to the Teutonic north before compelling them to plunge back into Helvetic obscurity. Or perhaps the yearning to hear cowbells tinkle and see the twinkle of brightly polished doorknobs on distant Alpine chalets is so overwhelming as to propel homewards any Swiss musician sojourning abroad for more than a few months. The cynic may scoff; but the present writer, in voluntary exile from his erstwhile Helvetic homeland, can vouch for the attraction of both.

Gan, Peck Jin. "Rojak: a study of cultural elements assimilated in selected works of Malaysian contemporary composers (2001-2014)." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/115182.

Full text
Abstract:
Malaysian contemporary music, an emerging and highly diverse art form, has gained recognition both in Malaysia and internationally over the last decade. Nevertheless, few studies have been completed and most conclude that there is no common compositional trend. This study, however, highlights that one common trend has emerged since 2000, namely, Malaysian composers have increasingly assimilated cultural elements into their compositions. The resulting works have been metaphorically compared to the national salad dish, rojak, in which all constituent parts are readily identifiable even when mixed together. It is argued that the assimilation of cultures is central to an understanding of Malaysian contemporary music, even though it is not the only compositional approach. Twenty-nine works by five selected Malaysian composers are analysed in this study. The composers are: Kee Yong Chong (b.1971), Chong Lim Ng (b.1972), Tazul Izan Tajuddin (b.1969), Johan Awang Othman (b.1969), and Kah Hoe Yii (b.1970). Musical score analysis, combined with the interpretation of data collected through fieldwork trips to Malaysia and Singapore, reveal the ways these composers have assimilated a myriad of cultural elements, including gamelan, Malay poem pantun, mak yong [Malaysian ancient theatre], wayang kulit [shadow puppet play], Balinese baris dance, the concept of tenunan [weave] and batik, Chinese calligraphy and painting, Chinese orchestra and its instruments, Chinese philosophy, and Islamic, Buddhist and Christian spiritual practices, into their compositions. This study concludes that their use of idiosyncratic approaches is becoming increasingly distinctive to Malaysian compositions and a reflection of the same processes of mixing identifiable ingredients that is found in the national rojak salads.

Abstract:
Few poets have had so profound an influence on the history of German art music as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Since the late eighteenth century, over seven hundred of his poems have been set by nearly six hundred composers as lieder for voice and piano. This anthology gathers twenty-two such settings, in a wide variety of styles, by composers ranging from Goethe's friend Carl Zelter to Hans von Bülow, Ferruccio Busoni, and Othmar Schoeck.

Abstract:
The chapter is set in January 1958, the night of the first day of Field Artillery Officer Candidate School (FA-OCS), at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, when John Shalikashvili is considering quitting, given the insanity of the program. The chapter explains how he joined the US military through the “peacetime draft” as well as why, despite not desiring a career in the military, the call of the family business is motivating him, as it did his brother Othar Joseph Shalikashvili before him, to prove he can measure up to his ancestors, particularly his father, whom he greatly admires, by becoming an officer.
